Microsoft Moonraker Leaked, Is Beyond Concept Phase

microsoftmoonraker2

When we talk about smartwatches, we see most of the big names in the smartphone industry jumping on the bandwagon, trying to gain foothold in an industry that is at a very young stage compared to the rather saturated smartphone market. One noticeable name that has been missing from the party is Microsoft, but it seems, even Microsoft has its own plans.

Enter Microsoft Moonraker.

microsoftmoonraker_1

Dug up by notable leaker @evleaks with the original source being Microsoft design employee Pei-Chi Hsieh’s tumblr (which is now offline, but you can always view a cached copy), evleaks points that the Moonraker was an actual smartwatch, and not just a concept, that was being developed over at Nokia. However, with Nokia’s acquisition by Microsoft, the project was being dropped in favor of the Microsoft Band.

According to images obtained from the blog, the Microsoft Moonraker looks like a rather simplistic smartwatch, coming in 3 different colors with matching straps. The software on the watch is also rather unique, as it adapts the familiar Metro UI from Windows Phone devices and applies a more minimalistic version of it. The watch also featured a bunch of customization options for the watchface, but if we took wild guesses and said that it may not be at par with the artistic freedom Android Wear allows in this aspect, we wouldn’t be too far from the truth. Along with this, the UI gives hints to support for Facebook and email built in, along with features like a step counter and remote camera.

Evleaks also gave the Microsoft Moonraker a model number, LS-50, but the current status of the development and production of the device is unknown.

As far as renders and leaks go, Evleaks has been a decent source when you consider the fact that things keep changing from inception of a product to its actual sales.

Nevertheless, if the Microsoft Moonraker was indeed a real device which looked this, it would certainly face a lot of competition from the second generation of Android Wear devices. Microsoft would have to release a rather significant product if it wishes to make an impact in the smartwatch space. Releasing a me-too product might result in a déjà vu à la Zune.

Blackberry Devices To Feature Android

Blackberry

Reuters is reporting that Blackberry may be considering shipping new devices with Android after it has become apparent that the Blackberry 10 range was not enough to claw the company back from the brink. This news comes from four sources they have been in contact with over the sudden change in direction.

The four sources, who requested that they not be named as they do not have authorization to discuss the matter publicly, claimed that the move to Android is part of a new strategy BlackBerry is using to change their focus on software and device management. It is not hard to imagine that this will either bring about an end to the Blackberry 10 line of devices or see the beginnings of a new line of Android devices to run along side it. This is expected to begin with a phone featuring a sliding keyboard as was seen briefly at Mobile World Congress earlier this year.

“We don’t comment on rumors and speculation, but we remain committed to the BlackBerry 10 operating system, which provides security and productivity benefits that are unmatched,” – Blackberry

Two of the aforementioned sources stated that the introduction of Android to Blackberry devices would make an excellent point regarding managing and securing multiple operating systems through the new Blackberry enterprise Service 12  (BES12). Regardless of their plans for possible future OS, Blackberry will have to make a pretty impressive turnaround if they still expect to be around in a few years time. The company that once housed 17,500 people was down to just 6,225 at the beginning of 2015 and has made further cuts since. It’s not hard to see why, as their user base has dropped from a reported 80 million to just 37 million in just a few years.

It would certainly be interesting to see if this move will rescue the fallen company and how an OEM known for producing unaesthetic devices with an unpopular OS would fare in the incredibly fragmented and versatile world of Android. Even if an Android Blackberry does not prove to be popular, my guess would be that it will still outsell most of the recent devices made by BlackBerry, and that can only be a good thing.
