Sony Invites Swedish Z3 Users to Test Concept Software

IMG_20150720_164009

Sony is no stranger to setting up beta testing programs, and generally has a good working relationship with the development community, having previously even released AOSP builds for a few of their flagships.

Today however the Japanese manufacturer has invited Swedish Xperia Z3 users to evaluate new ‘Android concept’ software, starting on July 27th. It’s not entirely clear what Sony means with this curious title. One would hope that this is an effort to get on the Android M bandwagon early, but it can be inferred that this is a little more of a change than that. It is stated that the software is a “fresh take on the Sony user experience”, so it looks as it there will be some aesthetic changes too, at the very least.

Other than that, potential users are assured that they can revert back to stock once the testing period is complete on September 13th, and warned that the process will necessitate two full wipes of the testing device, advising on backing up important data beforehand. It should also be noted that testers will need a Windows PC to install the software, and that the Z3 Compact is not compatible.

We’re curious about what Sony is planning with this beta release, so we’d like your help! If you’re based in Sweden, own an Xperia Z3 and want to try out this beta Android concept, go ahead and sign up with Sony here. Once the testing period goes live and you’ve tried out the software, get in touch with us here, making sure to leave your details so we can contact you.

We approve of any move by a manufacturer that reduces the gap between itself and the developing community, and by setting up initiatives like this, Sony has the potential to release more stable and polished OS updates in the future. We’re looking forward to finding out what’s in store, and with your help we may just find out early.
