Mozilla Stops Developing Firefox OS

firefox-os-2-0-revela-sus-novedades-y-el-arribo-a-nuevos-paises-01

Mozilla’s Firefox OS never made an impact on the smartphone industry. We have seen some attempts to bring that OS onto some popular devices — with little luck. Mozilla announced today that they will stop developing Firefox OS and selling smartphones with this operating system.

It’s a shame to see it go, but Mozilla had no chance to compete with Android, iOS or even Windows Phone.

An official confirmation of Firefox OS discontinuation has been given by Ari Jaaksi, who is a SVP of Connected Devices at Mozilla.

We are proud of the benefits Firefox OS added to the Web platform and will continue to experiment with the user experience across connected devices. We will build everything we do as a genuine open source project, focused on user experience first and build tools to enable the ecosystem to grow.
Firefox OS proved the flexibility of the Web, scaling from low-end smartphones all the way up to HD TVs. However, we weren’t able to offer the best user experience possible and so we will stop offering Firefox OS smartphones through carrier channels.
We’ll share more on our work and new experiments across connected devices soon.

Linux-kernel-based Firefox OS debuted in 2013 and the project lasted only two years before Mozilla decided to pull the plug. This system was entirely Web-based, so there were no native applications for it. Mozilla supported 18 smartphones and one TV, but the sales were always below expectations. Released smartphones were often criticized for their poor performance. Firefox OS was never ready to become a full-fledged operating system like Android or iOS, and Mozilla will relocate their focus on Internet of things.

Despite being unpopular among most users, developers on XDA quite often decided to port Firefox OS to Android devices. Firefox OS releases were maintained by, for example, FXP group.

Cancelling Firefox OS might be seen as an attempt to strengthen Mozilla’s position. They are still trying to throw down the gauntlet towards Google and Chrome. We are yet to find out if they succeeded.

Will you miss this operating system? Let us know in the comments!

Google’s Pixel C Tablet Available For $499

Pixel-C-3

Android’s Tablet scenario has undergone dramatic changes in the past few years. From having an entire OS version dedicated to bringing out a unique tablet experience, to now being limited to a handful of good choices, tablets have faced a battle with odds always slipping away from them.

Google looked like it planned to give the tablet market a boost, as it snuck in a surprise in the form of the Pixel C, a device built by Google itself. This convertible tablet aimed to give users a reason to buy a tablet, trying to merge the portability factor of a tablet over a laptop along with the convenience and usability of a full-size keyboard.

Let’s take a recap of the specs:

Specifications
Display 10.2-Inch 2560 x 1800 screen (308 ppi)
1 : √2 aspect ratio, same as a sheet of A4 paper
500 nits
sRGB color gamut
Internals Nvidia Tegra X1 CPU
Maxwell desktop-class GPU
3GB of RAM
32 GB or 64 GB ROM
Battery size TBD
Audio Stereo Speakers
Four microphones for far-field audio
Connections & Ports USB Type-C
Bluetooth

The release of the Pixel C was scheduled for late 2015, and the time of the season is finally upon us. The Google Pixel C is finally up for purchase on the Google Store, starting at $499 for the 32GB model and $599 for the 64GB model. You will have to shell out $149 for the keyboard too, as the price does not include this accessory.

The Google Pixel C runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. This is a leap from the Chrome OS that traditional Pixel-branded laptops run. In terms of competition, the Pixel C attempts to stand against the Microsoft Surface lineup and the Apple iPad Pro. Unfortunately, the lack of multi-window on Android will definitely hurt its chances of standing at the top without any competition as the productivity aspect of the tablet remains underutilized by the current state of the Android OS.

Pixel-C-6

The Pixel C is available for purchase in U.S., Canada, Germany, Ireland, Austria, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, France, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands and Switzerland. Google promises delivery in time for the holidays if you order it today.

What are your thoughts on the Pixel C? Will you be purchasing one? Let us know in the comments below!

Zopo Speed 7 & Speed 7 Plus: Budget Phone, Impressive Software

articles-12578

Zopo is not an OEM you may have heard of, or even considered before. They produce a small line up of budget devices each with a version of Android that is close to stock with just a few useful features thrown in, and this all results in a very smooth experience.

The Speed 7 and Speed 7 Plus differ only in screen and battery size, they both feature a slightly curved, plastic, brush effect back and no hardware navigation buttons, going instead for the on-screen alternative which no doubt aids in keeping the price low here. Something that I felt I had to emphasise before getting started as it is something that I see frequently when browsing mobile store pages and is surely borderline false advertising is the statement “Ultra-narrow bezel”. Yes, the edges of the phone only protrude a millimetre. However, the display is bordered by a thick black band making the narrow bezel redundant. This is not something you will see in the Zopo store’s showcase of the bezels.

It doesn’t take a genius to notice the huge difference between the official image and the actual product’s beefy bezel. Using a phone with tiny bezels and no black border as my daily driver it was the first thing I noticed as the boot animation played unfortunately, this is one of those grievances that once seen I just can’t shake, every time I turn on the display it’s the first thing I see. For the price, I cannot be too judgemental but after seeing the image on the store I felt let down.

Software

As I mentioned earlier the version of Android it runs does resemble stock, which in my opinion is always a bonus. The little bloatware it shipped with could be uninstalled readily and as such was only a minor nuisance. Where it stands out is the few key features they have added which really takes it to another level for budget devices. Inside the settings you will find options for scheduled power on and off, smart wake and MediaTek’s NFC alternative HotKnot.

I love the concept of a power on/off schedule, removing the fear that one day I will forget to turn my phone off in the weekly meeting with the boss or forgetting to turn it back on afterwards. Smart Wake is a feature becoming increasingly popular with ROMs of late, double tap on the display and it turns on or draw a letter to open an app is brilliant when you need something in a hurry, never miss that perfect photo moment again. HotKnot seems like a good idea in theory, place 2 devices with the technology screen-to-screen and selected data will transfer… but alas, this of course will only work if both devices have it — something doubtful given that HotKnot for the moment is really only apparent in some new Chinese MediaTek devices.

Performance

Both devices handle general usage well and I was able to browse menus,  home screens and the Play Store with no frame skips as can been seen from the Profile GPU Rendering. Although jumping into games does cause frequent jumps and skips. Geekbench places the devices at around 610 in a single core bench just lower than the Samsung Galaxy S4 and a respectable 2870 on multi-core comparisons just above the Samsung Galaxy S5. More than enough for most activities.

Build Quality

The phone’s build quality is as you would expect from devices that come in at less than $200, the bodies are plastic, the audio jack is offset towards the back of the device meaning the port is not a complete circle due to the bezels,

What it does have instead is two sharp points where they fail to meet. While you cannot feel any give when gently pressing on the back you do get creaks which are audible with day to day usage. It is not difficult to bend and flex the phone which can be done one handed, it seems that it would not stand up to much punishment.

Camera

As you can image from a budget device the camera isn’t going to be breath-taking,but  it does try to make up for this with the app which has a few fun and occasionally useful features, one being the ability to capture and explore “multi-angle” images which can then be exported as videos or GIFs as seen below. For the selfie addicts out there PIP mode allows you to take a photo with each camera at the same time overlaying your face into a polaroid style window. Also included is gesture detection, hold two fingers up in the “peace gesture” and the phone will take a photo for long distance selfies.

Despite a few issues with build quality these are both reasonable devices for the price. Zopo have released the source and rooting options, CWM and a few ROMs are already available for these devices in the forums. It will be interesting to see how these devices develop as they receive frequent OTAs.

What do you think of these budget devices? Let us know in the comments!

HTC’s November Revenue was the Highest in 6 Months

HTC's November Revenues was the Highest its Been for 6 Months

Thanks to sales of the One A9, the amount of revenue that HTC brought in for November is the most they’ve done in the past 6 months. While this does sound good, it should be noted that revenue is still down 40% when compared to November of 2014. Going forward, it seems HTC is betting on a diversified portfolio with the Vive VR headset and fitness accessories.
