Galaxy S11 leak points to three 5G models with curved displays

The Samsung Galaxy S11 series launch is at least three months away but the tech community has started preparing for leaks about the ravishing flagship lineup. Last week, we learned that Samsung is planning some innovation on the camera front and might deploy the 108MP Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX S5KHMX camera sensor on future Samsung smartphones – with high rumors suggesting this may be applicable to the Galaxy S11 series. Now, we’re witnessing a major leak from reputed leaker Evan Blass about the Galaxy S11 series, disclosing the number of models, their display sizes, as well as details about 5G support of each one of them.

Three different sizes, five models

Blass, widely known by his Twitter alias evleaks, revealed that there will be three different variants in the Galaxy S11 lineup. These will be available in three different screen sizes; the smallest one measuring either 6.2″ or 6.4″, the middle on measuring 6.7″, and the largest measuring 6.9″. It’s too early to confirm how Samsung will name these but the Galaxy S11e, S11, and the S11 Plus names seem likely as per another leaker.

Blass also noted that both – the smallest and the middle – variants of the Galaxy S11 will be available in 4G LTE only and 5G models while Samsung will skip out on the LTE-only model for the largest one of the bunch. The reliable source also noted that Samsung will ditch flat panels such as the one on the Galaxy S10e and instead go for AMOLED displays with curved edges on all three models. This may even lead to a slight increase in the price of the smallest variant as compared to the Galaxy S10e.

Galaxy S11 launches in late February 2020

While the exact date for the launch of the Galaxy S11 series is unclear, Blass suggested that it might happen around the same time as last year i.e. from mid to late February.

Last month SamMobile also speculated that the 2020 Galaxy Unpacked event could take place during the third week of February but this is yet to be confirmed.

Galaxy S11, S10 Lite, and Note 10 Lite color options revealed

In the meanwhile, another reputed tipster, Ishan Agarwal suggested the possible color options for the Galaxy S11 series while also adding to the speculations about the tentative naming. According to Agarwal, the Galaxy S11 will be available in at least three colors i.e. blue, gray, and black while the Galaxy S11e will be available in blue, gray, and pink – with no mention of the eye-catching yellow this time.

Agarwal also shared insights about the rumored Galaxy Note 10 Lite and the Galaxy S10 Lite which might come in three color variants each. The Galaxy Note 10 Lite will be available in red, black, and silver (maybe Aura Glow) whereas the Galaxy S10 Lite will come in black, blue, and white options. Lastly, he also noted the possibility of a newer generation of Galaxy Buds being under development.

Tip: Google Photos has an Astro filter to improve Pixel Astrophotography Shots

One of the most hyped features of the Pixel 4 is its ability to take photos of the stars, in other words, Astrophotography. If you place the Pixel 4 on a tripod and point the phone at the starry sky while using the Night Sight mode in the Google Camera app, you’ll be able to take long exposure shots. Due to light pollution, most people will have to travel a few hours away from home to take advantage of this feature, but if you get the opportunity, you can take some amazing shots. You’ve probably already seen some decent Pixel 4 Astrophotography shots on social media, but a lot of those shots were lightly edited. For those of you who know how to properly edit Astrophotography shots, you might be interested in trying out the new Astro filter in the Google Photos app.

Pixel 4 Astrophotography unfiltered Pixel 4 Astrophotography filtered

These photos were taken on a Pixel 4 at Brazos Bend State Park in Texas. Without driving another hour to get away from the light pollution in Houston, this was the best place I could find to take photos of the starry sky. The photos I took at this spot came out pretty decently, but I think the Astro filter in Google Photos does a good job at brightening the image so there’s less of a green tint in the sky. The contrast between the background and the sky also seems to be improved using the Astro filter. WordPress compressed the above photos pretty heavily upon uploading, but you can still see the major differences between the unedited and the edited photos. I recommend you give the Astro filter a shot with your own Pixel Astrophotography shots to see if you like what it does with your photos.

How to use Astro filter in Google Photos to improve Pixel Astrophotography

The Astro filter seems to have been available in the Google Photos app since the Pixel 4 launched last month. However, this new filter seems to have largely gone unnoticed by reviewers. Max Weinbach tells me he first noticed it on October 21st, while XDA Senior Member cstark27 says he first noticed it on October 31st. I only just noticed it was available thanks to Redditor /u/magnisonofthor.

Applying this new filter is quite simple. All you have to do is open the Google Photos app, find one of your Astrophotography shots, tap the Edit button, and look for the Astro filter. It should show up after “Auto” and before “West.” It seems to only show up when Google Photos detects a photo was taken using the Astrophotography mode, though.

If you have Google Camera 7.2 on your Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 3a, or Pixel 3a XL, you’ll also be able to take Astrophotography shots using Night Sight in the Google Camera app. If you have an older Pixel smartphone, then you’ll have to use a modded Google Camera app to join in on the fun. No matter the device, you should be able to use the Astro filter if the Google Photos app detects the photo was taken using the Astrophotography mode.

Google Camera on the Pixel 4 can offer to Scan Documents, Translate, and Copy Text

When Google announced the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL last month, there were a lot of new features that the company chose not to mention at the Made by Google event. New features like Screen Attention, Pixel Themes, car crash detection, and more were never announced but can be found on the latest Pixel smartphones. However, there’s one feature in particular that we haven’t seen get much attention: improved Google Lens suggestions in the Google Camera app. We actually talked about this in our “Google Pixel 4 – What the ‘Made by Google’ keynote didn’t say!” round-up, but I wanted to highlight this feature since, as I said, it hasn’t been mentioned online very much.

For context, Google Lens is a tool that uses computer vision to analyze what you’re looking at. It was announced at Google I/O 2017 with features like the ability to identify what kind of flower you’re looking at, pull up information on a restaurant you’re seeing, or recognize Wi-Fi network entry credentials. Since its debut, Google Lens has received updates to suggest outfits, recognize works from local artists, scan restaurant menus, overlay translated text, and do other cool things.

To access Google Lens on most smartphones, you can either pull up the Google Assistant and tap the Lens shortcut, open any photo in Google Photos and tap the Lens shortcut, or launch the dedicated Google Lens app (which is just a shortcut). On the Pixel smartphones, the Google Camera app has a dedicated shortcut to launch Google Lens. Starting with the Pixel 3, though, Google Lens runs in real-time in the Google Camera viewfinder. This integration, called Google Lens suggestions, allows the Google Camera app to detect URLs, email addresses, and business cards.

With the new Pixel 4, Google Lens suggestions can also offer to scan documents, translate text, or copy text. When you hover your phone over something that looks like it might be a document, you’ll see a chip with the Google Lens icon and “scan document” text. Tapping on this opens Google Lens with the corners automatically set to crop the document. After you’ve cropped the document, you can share it as a PDF or image. As for the translation feature, we were told it only supports English, Spanish, German, Hindi, and Japanese at the moment.

Here are screenshots showing each of these features:

Google Camera asking if I want to copy text seen in the viewfinder.

These improved Lens suggestions don’t seem to be available on older Pixel smartphones. When the feature debuted on the Pixel 3, Google said it used the Pixel Visual Core to offer real-time suggestions. It’s possible these new suggestions rely on the upgraded Pixel Neural Core on the Pixel 4. In any case, we’re sure the talented Google Camera modding community will come up with a way to force this feature to work on older Pixel smartphones, possibly by offloading the suggestions to the main SoC.

Google App 10.83 tests “Lift to Talk” for Google Assistant on the Pixel 4

Thanks to multiple leaks, we knew pretty much everything about the Pixel 4 smartphones before launch. Some of the rumored features of the new Pixel devices have yet to materialize, however. One such feature was said to be a new way to launch the Google Assistant on the latest Pixel: raise to talk. According to 9to5Google, raise to talk is a feature that lets you lift your phone to start talking to the Google Assistant. Although the feature didn’t launch with the new Pixel, we did confirm on two separate occasions that the feature is in development. Now, we managed to get the feature partially working in Google App v10.83 while at the same time revealing more details about how it might work.

An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.

Once (or rather, if) the feature goes live, you’ll see a new “Lift to talk” toggle in Settings > Apps & notifications > Assistant. The description for the feature says you’ll be able to “hold your phone to your face to talk to your Assistant.”

Google Assistant Lift to Talk setting

When I enabled the feature, the Google Assistant would activate whenever I unlocked the Pixel 4. However, this seems to be a bug in its behavior because the Google Assistant should only activate when the phone detects you’ve lifted it up to your face. In fact, each time that the Google Assistant is launched, I saw a toast notification at the bottom informing me that something is “missing data from sensors” including the gyroscope, accelerometer, swipe, and presence. Data from the gyroscope and accelerometer are likely used to determine the Pixel 4’s orientation and whether it was lifted or simply slightly moved from its current position. The “swipe” and “presence” sensors likely refer to data pulled from the Soli radar that powers Motion Sense gestures on the Pixel 4. Thus, it looks like “lift to talk” for Google Assistant might be limited to the Pixel 4 at launch.

I hope Google manages to implement the feature so there won’t be too many false positives, because I sure don’t want Google Assistant to activate every time I hold my phone up to unlock. If this feature starts rolling out or we manage to get it fully working to try for ourselves, we’ll let you know. You can download the latest version of the Google App from the Google Play Store link below.

ASUS recruits Android 10 beta testers for the ROG Phone II

Last week, ASUS started rolling out the stable Android 10 update for the ZenFone 6/6Z, making it the first ASUS smartphone to run Android 10 software. The ZenFone 6 isn’t ASUS’ latest flagship smartphone, though. The ROG Phone II is currently the cream of the crop in ASUS’ smartphone lineup, and like the ZenFone 6, it launched with ZenUI 6 on top of Android 9 Pie. Since the first generation ROG Phone has yet to get a single major Android OS update, ROG Phone II users were worried about the update prospects for their device. We have good news to share, though: ASUS is now recruiting users to beta test the Android 10 update for the ROG Phone II.

As spotted by users on our forums, an ASUS employee published a thread on the ZenTalk Forums to recruit Android 10 beta testers for the ZS660KL model. That model name corresponds to the 12GB RAM/512GB storage model sold internationally and not the 8GB RAM/128GB storage Tencent model sold in China. The Tencent model receives updates separately from the international model, though the updates themselves bring most of the same features. Users on our forums figured out how to flash the international software onto the Tencent model, but we aren’t sure if a converted ROG Phone II will be able to flash the Android 10 beta update.

Regardless, if you’re interested in participating in this beta program, you’ll have to be an active member of the ZenTalk Forums, provide ASUS your IMEI/Serial Number, and post regular feedback about bugs on a restricted forum for beta testers. You can sign up for the beta program here.

ASUS ROG Phone II Forums

ASUS first recruited beta testers for the ZenFone 6’s Android 10 update on July 24th, 2019. They rolled out the stable Android 10 update for that device on November 3rd, 2019—about 3 months after recruiting beta testers. They also recruited Android 10 beta testers for the ZenFone 5Z on August 23rd, 2019 but have yet to roll out the stable update for that device. However, now that they’ve completed the Android 10 update for the ZenFone 6, it shouldn’t take them much longer to bring the update to the ZenFone 5Z or ROG Phone II. We’ll let you know when that happens, though.

Discord 9.8.2 adds a hidden AMOLED dark theme on Android

If you play PC games, you may remember using applications like TeamSpeak, Ventrilo, or Mumble to communicate with your friends. Nowadays, though, most PC gamers have shifted to Discord. Discord started out as a chat service for gamers, but it has significantly grown in popularity among regular users as well. We even have a Discord server for XDA members to chat about Android and smartphones.

Due to Discord’s popularity as a general chat service, the mobile apps for Android and iOS are also quite popular. The Android app has had a dark theme for quite some time, but for those of you looking for an even darker theme, you’ll be happy to know that version 9.8.2 and above has finally included an AMOLED dark theme. Don’t expect this new AMOLED dark theme to save much battery life, though this new dark theme may make Discord more comfortable to use for some users. While it’s disappointing the new AMOLED dark theme doesn’t react to Android 10’s dark mode toggle, it is good to see that this new theme isn’t limited to Android 10.

If you have version 9.8.2 or later, you’ll no longer have to edit shared preference files or install a modified version of Discord to unlock the AMOLED dark theme. Simply go to Settings then Appearance and tap on the “Dark” option 10 times. You should see a toast notification that says, “Brave one, the path to darkness opens!” Then, underneath the “Light” and “Dark” appearance settings, a new “AMOLED optimized mode (experimental)” option will appear. Enable this setting and then restart the app to change the background color of the settings screens, DMs, channels, and sidebar to black. Not every part of the app is themed AMOLED dark, but most of the important parts are.

The latest beta versions aren’t available on the Google Play Store yet, but you can download version 9.8.3 from APKMirror. If you have one of the latest Samsung Galaxy smartphones, then don’t forget you can also enable Discord’s voice chat overlay.
