[Update: Stable Android Pie update coming soon] Xiaomi is recruiting testers for the Mi TV 4A’s Android Pie update

Update 1 (11/19/19 @ 02:20 AM ET): The Mi TV 4A has been added to the list of devices certified for Android. We can expect the update to roll out soon.

The original article from July 10, 2019, remains intact.

Besides disrupting the smartphone market with its tempting prices, Xiaomi has also taken a good share of the smart TV sales with its Mi TV lineup. These Mi TVs are incredibly popular majorly in the South East Asian markets. The Mi TV 4A, which was launched in 2018 with Patchwall UI based on Android Nougat, should soon be getting an update to Android Pie-based OS. Ahead of the update, Xiaomi has announced a pilot testing program for the Android Pie update on the Mi TV 4A 32-inch and 43-inch models and is seeking early testers for the update.

Mi TV common discussion thread on XDA Forums

This is big news for the Mi TV 4A users since the update brings essential Android TV features such as the Google Play Store, other Google Play apps, as well as the Google Assistant. Xiaomi does not that since these TVs don’t support BLE, you won’t be able to use the Google Assistant even if you buy a new remote with a dedicated Assistant button but, you can use any Google Home device or the Home app to trigger the Assistant. The update will also bring inbuilt Chromecast support and hopefully a Full HD playback option in the native YouTube app.

Xiaomi’s Product Manager, Sudeep Sahu, calls this a giant leap and it is right so since these features were unavailable on the Xiaomi smart TVs in the Mi TV 4A series, forcing users to rely on alternatives like the Aptoide TV app store. Thus, in spite of being based on Android, these TVs weren’t on par with other Android TVs in terms of the app support and that vexed buyers. Xiaomi launched the successor Mi TV 4A PRO series with a full-fledged Android TV experience and since then, it has received many requests for updating the older models to a similar experience.

Xiaomi has skipped the Android Oreo update for the Mi TV 4A models and with the Pie update, the roll-out of latest security patches should also become more convenient for Xiaomi’s engineers. Besides the Android update, we also expect these TVs to be getting Patchwall 2.0 interface which was recently rolled out for the newer TVs. The ETA for the stable update has not been released for now and should depend on the feedback from the users.

For now, Xiaomi is only selecting 50 users for this early access program and if you wish to get a chance to be one of them, fill the form below before the midnight of July 21st.

Mi TV 4A certified for Android, stable OTA expected soon

Xiaomi’s first-gen TVs in India i.e. 32-inch and 43-inch variants of the Mi TV 4A, with a codename, “magnolia,” have been added to the list of devices certified by Google to run Android. This hints that we can expect to roll out the Android TV upgrade based on Android Pie to the TVs soon. The update seemingly took longer than expected since the TVs originally came with AOSP-based firmware but not certified for the Android TV program.

The update will bring support for the Google Play Store, Data Saver feature for the Mi TV 4X series, but Netflix support may still remain elusive. Meanwhile, the Mi TV 4A hasn’t appeared on the Google Play Console yet. We’ll inform you when Xiaomi officially confirms the roll-out of the Android Pie update for these TVs.

Amazon Prime Video prepares to add smart downloads like Netflix, following top actors

There are several reasons that make Netflix one of the best video streaming services out there. Not only does the platform have some great content on offer, but it also includes some really handy features that can significantly improve your experience. Features like the Skip Intro button and smart downloads don’t seem like much at first, but you realize their importance when you switch over to another streaming service that doesn’t have them. Amazon Prime Video, for instance, doesn’t include a smart downloads feature yet. And I, for one, miss it a lot when I’m watching a show on its mobile app. Thankfully, it won’t be long before the feature finally shows up on Amazon Prime Video.

An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.

A recent teardown of the Amazon Prime Video APK (v 3.0.259.65541) has revealed strings of code that hint at the upcoming Auto Downloads feature. The feature will work pretty much like Netflix’s smart downloads and will automatically download the next episode of whatever TV series you’re watching to offer an uninterrupted viewing experience.

<string name="AV_MOBILE_ANDROID_AUTO_DOWNLOADS_HELP_MESSAGE">"As you watch TV shows on your mobile device, we'll automatically download the next episode for you."</string>
    <string name="AV_MOBILE_ANDROID_AUTO_DOWNLOADS_STATUS_BAR_SETTINGS_LINK">Manage</string>

As seen in the screenshot below, the Auto Downloads feature will work on WiFi networks by default, unless you enable mobile data downloads. In order to save space, the app will automatically delete watched episodes when the next episode is downloaded and you’ll get the option to choose how many episodes are downloaded automatically.

Additionally, we’ve also uncovered strings that hint at another cool feature making its way to the app. This feature will allow you to follow top actors on Amazon Prime Video and receive notifications whenever one of their videos go live. If you’re not sure which actors to follow, the platform will also include a discover section featuring top actor recommendations (as seen in the screenshot above).

<string name="AV_MOBILE_ANDROID_FOLLOWING_DIALOG_EXPERIMENT_BODY">We are currently experimenting with this feature. We may disable it without notice.</string>
    <string name="AV_MOBILE_ANDROID_FOLLOWING_DIALOG_EXPERIMENT_TITLE">Experiment details</string>
<string name="AV_MOBILE_ANDROID_FOLLOWING_EMPTY_BODY">Follow your favorite actors to get notifications when their videos are added to Prime Video.</string>
<string name="AV_MOBILE_ANDROID_FOLLOWING_EMPTY_BODY_NOTIFICATIONS_DISABLED">Keep track of all your favorite actors in one place.</string>
    <string name="AV_MOBILE_ANDROID_FOLLOWING_EMPTY_TITLE">"You're not following anyone yet..."</string>
    <string name="AV_MOBILE_ANDROID_FOLLOWING_SEE_TOP_ACTORS">Discover top actors to follow</string>
    <string name="AV_MOBILE_ANDROID_FOLLOWING_TITLE">Following</string>
    <string name="AV_MOBILE_ANDROID_FOLLOWING_TOP_ACTORS">Top actors</string>

Our Editor-in-Chief Mishaal Rahman successfully managed to trigger these features by manually launching activities in the app. However, they don’t seem to be live yet. As of now, we have no information from Amazon regarding the release timeline for these new features.

[Update: Press renders leaked] Honor V30 with punch hole display and 5G launching in China on November 26

Update 11/19/19 @ 12:50 AM: Leaked press renders confirm dual punch-hole display. Scroll to the bottom for more information. The article as published on November 12, 2019 is preserved as below.

The days of the infamous notch seem numbered as more and more manufacturers are gravitating towards other alternatives to house the front-facing sensors on smartphones. Several manufacturers like OnePlus and Xiaomi have added pop-up camera modules on their smartphones to achieve the seamless no-bezel look, while others like Samsung and Huawei have opted for punch-hole displays to house the front-facing sensor. The punch-hole display seems to have caught on quite well and we already have quite a few devices featuring the same. In fact, leaks reveal that the next flagship from OnePlus will also feature a punch-hole display. Huawei’s sub-brand Honor already offers a couple of smartphones with the design and it doesn’t seem like the company’s going to stop any time soon.

As per a recent post on Weibo, Honor will be launching the all-new Honor V30 in China on November 26 and the device will feature a dual punch-hole display like the one found on the Galaxy S10 Plus. This means that the upcoming smartphone will house two selfie-shooters within the cutout on the display.

As of now, there’s no information from the company regarding any of its hardware specifications, but the post does reveal that the Honor V30 will feature 5G support. The company has also released two promotional posters of the upcoming device and from the looks of it, the Honor V30 will have quite a substantial chin at the bottom. The Honor V30 is the direct successor to the Honor V20 from last year and it’s expected to offer flagship specifications at a competitive price. The device will most likely be released in international markets early next year under the View 30 moniker.

Honor V30 press render

We now have another look at the upcoming Honor V30/View 30, thanks to leaked press renders shared by 91mobiles. The renders confirm that the upcoming flagship from Honor will feature a pill-shaped cutout in the top left corner of the display housing two selfie shooters. On the back, the device will feature a rectangular camera module, featuring triple rear cameras and an LED flash. Additionally, the Honor V30 will ship with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and a USB Type-C port at the bottom for charging and data syncing. Sadly, the device won’t feature a 3.5mm headphone jack. The Honor V30 will be available in at least two color variants — blue and orange — with a slight gradient finish.

Samsung brings Galaxy Watch Active 2 features to the Galaxy Watch & Watch Active

For the past few years, Samsung smartwatches have had physical rotating bezels as a way to control their watch UI. Sadly, Samsung removed it with this years’ Galaxy Watch Active and Galaxy Watch Active 2. Luckily, with the new Watch Active 2, Samsung introduced its new touch bezel. This touch bezel emulated the rotating bezel by allowing users to slide their finger around the display as though there was a physical bezel, even though there wasn’t one. In the latest Galaxy Watch Active update, Samsung was able to backport the touch bezel, along with a few other features, back to the first Galaxy Watch Active.

In a new update, which should be rolling out now, Samsung was able to backport the touch bezel to the Galaxy Watch Active. This lets you rotate your finger around the bezel to control the watch. You can switch between widgets, scroll through notifications, or scroll through pages. It makes using the watch easier and more natural.

While the Galaxy Watch didn’t get the touch bezel because it has a physical one, Samsung still brought the rest of the feature set back to the regular Watch and the Watch Active. These improvements include a few changes in apps like Samsung Health, like lap time tracking for running and cycling and data sync via NFC for Technogym workout equipment. They also improved the always-on display while charging or in power saver and improved the customization of the quick settings.

Samsung brought back One UI 1.5 to the Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Watch Active. With this, Samsung added a few new watch complications like a “Begin Workout” button, breathing, and more. In addition to this, Samsung added their “My Style” feature. This lets you take a picture of your clothes in the Galaxy Wearables app and the background of the watch face will match with the clothes you are wearing. Samsung has also added a new indicator to show when an app is running in the background. Clicking the icon will open the running app, letting you interact with it. Samsung has also added a few new emojis and finally added skin tones to the emojis on the watch.

It’s great to see Samsung backporting features like this. It really helps consumers not feel left out when new updates and devices are released. With these devices ranging from being from 6 months to 1 year old, getting regular updates with new features is great to see, and something very few other companies are reliably doing.

[Update 3: How to Force] Google plans to redesign the Play Store on Android TV to add video previews for apps

Update 3 (11/18/19 @ 11:35 PM ET): If you haven’t already received the new redesigned Google Play Store, you can now force it by following the steps mentioned at the end of this article.

Update 2 (10/18/19 @ 4:25 PM ET): The Google Play Store redesign is now rolling out to Android TV devices.

Update 1 (5/8/19 @ 1:14 AM ET): During the “What’s new on Android TV” session at Google I/O 2019, images of the Play Store redesign were shown off. The images can be found below. The article as published on May 1, 2019, is preserved as below.

Android TV came about when Google was trying to expand its Android brand to as many markets as possible (Android Wear, Android Things, Android Pay, etc.). Some of these have been rebranded but Android TV has kept its branding and it doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon. In fact, Google is happy with how the platform has evolved over the years and application developers seem to be on board as well. Thanks to the increase in developer activity, Google is putting additional focus on its smart TV OS with a number of changes to come in the future.

Shalini Govil-Pai, Google’s senior director of product management for Android TV, recently spoke in an interview with TechHive about the recent rise in developer activity. She says that Android TV now has over 5,000 applications and games in the Play Store and that this is a big increase as the number was only at 3,000 around the same time last year. We don’t really hear about new Android TV set-top boxes launching throughout the year but there are a number of new smart TVs that get released with Android TV as its software.

To go along with this surge in developer support the team at Google is currently planning on redesigning the TV version of the Play Store. The company says it wants to add video previews for apps and believes that will make the experience “a lot more visual and a lot more cinematic, which is what you expect on TV.” They are currently working on filling the void of some key studios to get their apps in the Play Store (including Nick Jr., Discovery, and Watch TNT) but wasn’t able to reveal any information about their discussion with these companies.

Although, they did talk about how they would like to expand into fitness apps, education apps, and a lot more games.

Update 1: Images From Google I/O 2019

During the Google I/O developer conference (via 9to5Google), Google showed off images of the new interface for the Play Store on Android TV.

This redesign helps users make purchases much more quickly by letting them use a PIN rather than their password. You can watch the entire session at the following YouTube link (starts at 2:19:46.)

Update 2: Rolling Out

After being shown off at Google I/O this past summer, the Google Play Store redesign is now rolling out to Android TV devices. Reddit user battierpeeler shared the photos above of the update on the Xiaomi Mi Box. It appears to be a server-side update as several other users are on the latest version and do not have it yet. Keep an eye out over the next few days and weeks.

Update 3: How to force an update to the new redesigned Google Play Store on Android TV

If you are still haven’t received the new redesign update for the Google Play Store, you can force it by following the steps mentioned below:

  1. Open the existing Google Play Store on your Android TV.
  2. Navigate to the Play Store’s Settings > About > Play Store version.
  3. Repeatedly click on the version number until a toast message appears, saying “A new version of the Play Store will be downloaded and installed”.

This should trigger an update to the Play Store. Once triggered, just back out of the app and let it update in the background. You should have access to the new Play Store after a while.

Google Maps 10.30 prepares to let you pay for EV charging and find compatible plugs

Late last year, Google updated Maps to show nearby electric vehicle charging stations. Maps will show you information about the business where the EV charging station is located, what kind and how many ports are available, the charging speeds, and other information including reviews, photos, and more. Charging station information is pulled from Tesla, Chargepoint, SemaConnect, EVgo, Blink, Chargemaster, Pod Point, and Chargefox. While these services provide Google Maps a huge number of EV charging stations to show on the map, the driver still needs to use a separate app to pay for charging. That could change in the near future, however, as Google Maps 10.30 for Android has added strings that suggest it will support making payments straight from the app.

An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.

Pay for Charging

New in version 10.30 are the following two strings, part of a larger set of strings pertaining to electric vehicles, that describe adding payment methods to the user’s electric vehicle profile.

<string name="EV_PROFILE_VIEW_NETWORKS_HEADING">Your payment methods</string>
<string name="EV_PROFILE_ADD_NETWORKS">Add payment methods</string>

Electric Vehicle Profile, Finding Compatible Plugs

As mentioned, Google Maps is preparing to let you update your profile with information on your electric vehicle. You’ll be able to add your plugs so you’ll only see compatible charging stations when searching in the app.

<string name="EV_PROFILE_ADD_CONNECTORS_V2">Add plugs</string>
<string name="EV_PROFILE_EDIT">Edit</string>
<string name="EV_PROFILE_EDIT_CONNECTORS_TITLE_V2">Your plugs</string>
<string name="EV_PROFILE_LOADING_FAILED_MESSAGE">Please check your internet connection</string>
<string name="EV_PROFILE_LOADING_FAILED_RETRY_BUTTON_TEXT">Try again</string>
<string name="EV_PROFILE_LOADING_FAILED_TITLE">Maps is offline</string>
<string name="EV_PROFILE_OVERVIEW_TITLE">Electric vehicle settings</string>
<string name="EV_PROFILE_PIVOT_TOOLTIP_TEXT_V2">Showing compatible charging stations</string>
<string name="EV_PROFILE_PROMO_CARD_ACTION_TEXT_V2">Add plugs</string>
<string name="EV_PROFILE_PROMO_CARD_DESCRIPTION_V3">To only see charging stations that work with your EV, add your plugs</string>
<string name="EV_PROFILE_PROMO_CARD_DISMISS_TEXT_V2">No thanks</string>
<string name="EV_PROFILE_PROMO_CARD_TITLE_TEXT_V3">Get compatible charging stations</string>
<string name="EV_PROFILE_SEE_LESS">See less</string>
<string name="EV_PROFILE_SEE_MORE">See more</string>
<string name="EV_PROFILE_SETTINGS_TITLE_V2">Electric vehicle settings</string>
<string name="EV_PROFILE_VIEW_CONNECTORS_HEADING_V2">Your plugs</string>
<string name="RESTRICTION_EV_PROFILE_ANY_PLUGS">Any plugs</string>
<string name="RESTRICTION_EV_PROFILE_V2">EV plugs</string>
<string name="RESTRICTION_EV_PROFILE_YOUR_PLUGS">Your plugs</string>
<string name="CAR_EVCP_IN_SEARCH_APPLIED_TEXT">Showing compatible charging stations</string>
<string name="CAR_EVCP_IN_SEARCH_NOT_APPLIED_TEXT">Showing all results. Some charging stations may not match your plugs.</string>

These features are not yet live in the Google Maps app for Android. We’ll probably see an announcement from Google in a few days or weeks, though. The last time Google Maps was updated with a new EV-related feature was back in April when they added real-time availability of charging ports. With new electric vehicles on the way, the Maps app is long overdue for new functionality.
