Google Pixel’s Call Screen may start automatically screening robocalls

We can debate all day about the quality of the hardware on Pixel smartphones, but I’m sure that most of us can agree that the software is where Pixel devices really shine. Each new Pixel device introduced new software features that are widely sought after in the community, and for the Pixel 3, one of those new features was Call Screen. This feature is available for all Pixel devices and even some Motorola phones as well, and it helps shield you from robocallers by answering calls with a series of questions to figure out why you’re being called. Describing Call Screen makes it seem incredibly “smart,” but in reality, initiating it and selecting responses are all user-controlled. That could change in an upcoming update, however, as we spotted strings for a new automatic Call Screen feature.

An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.

Google Phone v42 rolled out earlier this morning on the Google Play Store, and an APK for the update is available on APKMirror. We downloaded the APK and decoded the resources to look for new strings. In the latest update, we found a large number of strings relating to a feature code-named “revelio.” We’ve been tracking the development of this feature since early August when code for it was first added, but at the time, it was ambiguous whether it was a new Call Screen feature or spam detection feature. The strings now make this clear. The code-name “revelio” likely refers to the Harry Potter spell that removes magical disguises.

Automatic Call Screening

These first strings describe the settings toggles for automatic call screening. You’ll be able to either automatically screen to decline robocalls, ring the phone (which is the default behavior), or automatically silently decline the call.

This next batch of strings describes how the automatic Call Screen feature works. The demo page says that the Google Assistant automatically answers unknown calls on your behalf; detected robocalls are silently declined without ever interrupting you, while unknown numbers ring a few moments later and a transcript is saved of the call. Any number saved in your contact list is never screened so you’ll always receive them. If the Assistant was unable to automatically screen the call, you can tap a button in the notification to initiate manual Call Screen (ie. the current functionality.)

When the Assistant automatically answers calls for you, you have the option to save the audio from those short calls. We spotted evidence for this back in early August, but at the time it wasn’t clear if the feature would be available for manual Call Screens due to potential legal issues with users recording calls in some US States. Now it’s clear that this feature is intended for automatic call screening, which makes sense as the Google Assistant will always announce to the other party that it will be recording calls.

Spam Preferences

Finally, these strings define some new spam preferences. Spam detection on the Google Phone app will detect altered numbers, private or hidden numbers, unknown numbers, and/or numbers that match Google’s spam database. It’s unclear if these preferences will let you tweak what kinds of numbers the automatic Call Screen feature works on, though.

This feature is not yet live on a Pixel 2 XL or Pixel 4 running the latest Google Phone 42 beta app. We don’t know when Google will announce it, either. We’ll be trying to enable this new feature ahead of launch, though. If we’re successful, we’ll follow-up with another article.

[Update 4: Boston, Houston, and Sioux Falls] Verizon enables 5G UWB in Washington D.C., Atlanta, Detroit, and Indianapolis

Update 4 (11/19/19 @ 9:25 AM ET): Verizon’s 5G network lights up in Boston, Houston, and Sioux Falls.

Update 3 (10/25/19 @ 12:45 PM ET): Verizon expands its 5G network coverage to Omaha and Dallas.

Update 2 (9/26/19 @ 1:15 PM ET): Verizon launches 5G service in New York City, Boise, and Panama City.

Update 1 (8/22/19 @ 12:15 PM ET): Verizon has announced the 5G rollout in Phoenix and a partnership with Boingo.

While many people are still skeptical about 5G, Verizon continues their rollout plans. Today, the company flipped the switch for four new cities: Atlanta, Detroit, Indianapolis, and Washington DC. Verizon is already selling a couple of 5G devices, but the list of available cities is still relatively small. So the continued expansion is good news.

Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network is mmWave, just like AT&T, but different from Sprint’s sub-6Ghz network. One of the limitations of mmWave is you have to be in very specific locations to get the advertised 5G speeds. For example, read the description for Indianapolis below.

Indianapolis:

In Indianapolis, 5G Ultra Wideband service is initially available in parts of the following neighborhoods, Arsenal Heights, Bates Hendricks, Castleton, Crown Hill, Fountain Square, Grace Tuxedo Park, Hawthorne, Historic Meridian Park, Lockerbie Square, Ransom Place, Renaissance Place, St. Joseph Historic Neighborhood, Upper Canal and Woodruff Place and around such landmarks and public spaces as Garfield Park, and Indiana University School of Medicine.

Even if you have a 5G device and live in these cities, you may not be in the covered areas. These four new cities bring Verizon’s list up to nine, but they are still planning to have 5G in more than 30 cities by 2020. Soon, they will add the Galaxy Note 10 5G to the list of capable devices as well. Whether the market is ready or not, Verizon marches on with 5G.

Washington DC:

In Washington DC, consumers, businesses and government agencies can initially access Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband service in areas of Foggy Bottom, Dupont Circle, Cardozo / U Street, Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights, Le Droit Park, Georgetown Waterfront, Judiciary Square, Shaw, Eckington, NOMA, National Mall and the Smithsonian, Gallery Place / Chinatown, Mt. Vernon Square, Downtown, Penn Quarter, Brentwood, Southwest Waterfront, Navy Yard, and nearby Crystal City, VA, as well as around landmarks such as the Ronald Reagan National Airport, United States Botanical Gardens, Hart Senate Building, National Gallery of Art, Lafayette Square, The White House, Freedom Plaza, Farragut Square, George Washington University, Capital One Arena, Union Station, Howard University Hospital, George Washington University Hospital, and Georgetown Waterfront Park.

Atlanta:

In Atlanta, 5G Ultra Wideband service will initially be concentrated in parts of the following neighborhoods: Downtown, Midtown, Tech Square, and around such landmarks as The Fox Theater, Emory University Hospital Midtown, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Home Depot Backyard, Centennial Olympic Park, Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca Cola, and parts of Renaissance Park.

Detroit:

In Detroit, 5G Ultra Wideband service will initially be concentrated in parts of the following areas: Dearborn, Livonia, and Troy, including areas around the Oakland-Troy Airport.

Update 1: Phoenix Launch + Boingo Partnership

Verizon’s 5G coverage is coming to Phoenix, AZ, bringing the list of 5G cities up to 10. The network will go live on August 23rd. Verizon also announced a partnership with Boingo to bring 5G Ultra Wideband service to indoor and public places.

This is important because Verizon’s current 5G network is essentially unusable indoors, a limitation of the technology they are using. The partnership should bring 5G to places like airports, stadiums, arenas, office buildings, hotels, etc.

Last, but not least, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G will be available from Verizon tomorrow, August 23rd. The full retail price is $1,299.99.

Update 2: NYC, Boise, Panama City

Verizon’s 5G coverage is expanding to 3 more cities: New York City, Boise, and Panama City. In New York City, coverage will be in areas of Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and around several landmarks. Verizon’s 5G technology limits coverage to very specific areas, so be sure to check the source below for all the exact locations you can access 5G in these cities.

Today, Verizon has expanded 5G coverage to two more cities: Omaha, Nebraska and Dallas, Texas. This brings the number of cities with 5G coverage from Verizon up to 15. Verizon has announced that its 5G network is now live in three more cities across the US: Boston, MA, Houston, TX, and Sioux Falls, SD. This brings the total number of cities with Verizon 5G coverage up to 18. Lenovo ThinkBook 14 and 15 with 10th Gen Intel Comet Lake processors launched in India for SMBs

Lenovo’s presence in the smartphone world may not be as great in current times, despite the acquisition of Motorola. However, the situation is quite different when it comes to computing devices beyond smartphones, at least in India. In the country, Lenovo claims to hold the first position in the overall PC market with a 37.7% market share, and a 62.6% share in the commercial notebook market as of H1 2019. The company is now aiming to further extend this lead with the launch of the new Lenovo ThinkBook 14 and Lenovo ThinkBook 15 laptops in India, targeting Small and Medium-sized Businesses (SMBs) who are looking to provide the same to a young workforce.

Lenovo’s SMB Notebook portfolio in India starts off with the V Series 14″ and 15.6″ laptops. In the premium segment, the ThinkPad lineup handles duties at different screen sizes and variations. The ThinkBook lineup slots in between the V series and ThinkPad, augmenting the already existing ThinkBook s series with new entrants in the form of the ThinkBook 14 and 15.

Lenovo SMB Notebook Lineup in India

Lenovo is primarily targeting SMBs with today’s launches, with the idea that the new laptops will serve as worthy tools for the younger workforce, instead of the older and bulkier options from yesteryears. These laptops have a clean, sharp yet understated design language, making them ideal for use within office environments, while still retaining portability for use on the move. Both the laptops can be purchased by end-consumers as well, but the focus is clearly at SMBs and B2B sales, so there is a wide range of configuration options available which the businesses can customize according to their specific needs.


Lenovo ThinkBook 14

The Lenovo ThinkBook 14 comes with anodized aluminum top and bottom covers (also referred to as A and D covers), while the C cover (where the keyboard rests) features a brushed metal finish on the shell. The display is a 14″ FHD panel with an 80% screen-to-body ratio, and options of IPS or TN panels depending on the model chosen. The laptop also features a 180° lay-flat hinge that allows the laptop to be opened flat, though keep in mind that the display is not a touchscreen and not intended for use as a 2-in-1.

On the inside, the ThinkBook 14 comes with Intel’s 10th Generation Comet Lake processors, with variants featuring Core i3-10110U, Core i5-10210U, Core i7-10510U or Core i7-10710U chips. Depending on the configuration chosen, you can get a notebook with Integrated Intel UHD graphics, or with AMD Radeon 625 discrete graphics with 2GB DDR5 VRAM. For memory, you can max out the laptop with up to 24GB DDR4 2667MHz RAM, and the company spokespersons mention that one RAM slot is left free inside the laptop for easier upgradability and future-proofing. The notebook can also support a hybrid storage configuration of 1TB M.2 PCIe SSD coupled with 2TB 5400rpm HDD, though you can also opt for a lower SSD storage variant and upgrade it yourself in the future.

The ThinkBook 14 also comes with a 720p HD camera, with a physical switch that can cover the camera when not needed. Audio duties are handled by stereo speakers on the bottom of the laptop, which are Skype for Business certified. In addition to the I/O ports mentioned in the specification table below, the laptop also features a “hidden” USB 2.0 Type-A port, which is perfect for using a Bluetooth adapter and keeping the port safe from damage during a move.

Other configuration options include a choice between 45Wh and 57Wh battery, a choice between a rectangle-tip 65W AC adapter or a 65W Type-C adapter. The power button on the laptop can also be optionally upgraded with a fingerprint reader, while the keyboard can optionally gain a backlight. Bluetooth 5 is standard on the laptop, but for WiFi, you can choose from WiFi 5 1x1AC, WiFi 5 2x2AC or WiFi 6 2x2AX. For the OS, you can choose to go for Windows all the way up to Windows 10 Pro, or opt for a DOS laptop.

The Lenovo ThinkBook 15 shares several design characteristics with the ThinkBook 14. But since it has a larger footprint, there is more room, and hence, you also get a bigger keyboard with a dedicated Number Pad.

The 15’6″ FHD display gives the laptop an 83% screen-to-body ratio. Only the top A cover is aluminum on this size, which helps in managing the weight of the laptop.

Other changes involve a maxed out variant with AMD Radeon 620 discrete graphics with 2GB GDDR5 VRAM, and a standard inclusion of a Kensington MiniSaver Lock Slot.

Lenovo claims that the laptop is easy to open, as you can do so by removing the visible screws underneath the laptop. You do not need to remove the rubber stands on the device as there are no hidden screws, so that is always a plus as it makes repairs easier to undertake.


Pricing and Availability

The Lenovo ThinkBook 14 and ThinkBook 15 will be available in India starting 1st week of December 2019 at a starting price of ₹30,990 ($432). While Lenovo did not mention a fixed price for the maxed out variant in their press release, a spokesperson commented that a maxed configuration on this series can set you back in the vicinity of ₹80,000 ($1,115). For context for our international audience, India’s taxation policy often distorts the pricing of similar products in India as against markets like the US, with an 18% import duty on laptops and computers. So personal computing devices are generally expensive in India for similar hardware.

While the primary target is SMBs, in which case they should reach out to Lenovo for a specific quote, consumers who are interested in this lineup will also be able to purchase the laptops from Amazon.in and Lenovo.com.

YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium prepaid plans are now available in India

Earlier this year in March, Google launched YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium in India. At the time of launch, the services were only available to users as a postpaid subscription. Users were required to add a payment method at the time of subscription which was auto-debited every month to renew the subscription. Now, Google is finally offering a prepaid alternative, allowing users to subscribe to the service without requiring a credit card.

As per a recent blog post from the company, users in India will now be able to purchase a one-month or three-month prepaid plan to enjoy YouTube Premium and Music Premium. Additionally, users will be allowed to extend their membership by a month or three months at any point using top-ups. The prepaid plans offer all the same benefits, however, the pricing is slightly different.

The one-month YouTube Premium prepaid plan is priced at ₹139, as opposed to the monthly subscription which costs ₹129. The three-month plan, on the other hand, is priced at ₹399. The one-month prepaid plan for Music Premium is priced at ₹109, while the three-month plan will cost you ₹309. The monthly subscription plan for Music Premium is priced at ₹99.

It’s also worth noting that users who opt for the monthly subscription plan receive an additional month of free service, while no such benefit is extended to prepaid plan users. Do note that YouTube Premium includes all the benefits extended to Music Premium subscribers so you don’t have to purchase both the plans separately.

Honor Watch Magic 2 live image leak reveals a smartwatch with thin bezels

Huawei’s sub-brand Honor launched the first Honor Watch Magic back in October last year. The original watch featured a 1.2-inch AMOLED display and packed in all the usual fitness tracking features you’d find on a premium smartwatch. Honor is prepping up to launch its next iteration at an event in China next week. While we don’t have any information on the specifications of the upcoming watch, a couple of leaked images have now surfaced online giving us our first look at its design.

Unlike its predecessor, the upcoming Honor Watch Magic 2 will feature thinner bezels that don’t rise too high off the display. Honor has also opted for a monochromatic look this time around, with no red accents around the dial like the first-gen smartwatch. However, the leaked images could just be one variant of the watch, with more variants offering different color combinations. The watch straps look like they’re made of TPU, unlike its predecessor, but Honor hasn’t carried forward the red accents here either.

 

Due to the design changes, the Honor Watch Magic 2 now looks more akin to a modern smartwatch, rather than a typical wristwatch. As mentioned earlier, we don’t have any information regarding the internal specifications of the smartwatch yet, but we expect to learn more as the launch draws closer. The Honor Watch Magic 2 will be unveiled in China on November 26, alongside the Honor V30. It’s worth noting that the flagship Honor V30 has also gone through some design changes and will feature a pill-shaped hole punch cutout in the display to house the front-facing cameras. Leaked images of the device suggest that it will feature a rectangular camera module on the back with three camera sensors and an LED flash.

OnePlus 3/3T receive final security update with October 2019 security patch

While OnePlus started its journey back in 2014 with the launch of the OnePlus One, it wasn’t until the launch of the OnePlus 3/3T that the brand gained mainstream popularity. Both the devices have aged quite well over the years, with a number of people still using them as their daily driver. And OnePlus has done its part by providing prompt OS and security updates over the last three years. According to OnePlus’s software maintenance schedule, the OnePlus 3/3T have finally reached the last leg of their update cycle and, as promised, OnePlus has now started rolling out the final security update for the two devices.

Back in August this year, OnePlus rolled out the previous update for the OnePlus 3/3T, featuring the Android security patches for August 2019. When we reached out to OnePlus regarding the pending update, the company confirmed that it has already started phase 1 rollout for the last update. The update introduces the Android security patch for October 2019, along with a couple of minor bug fixes and improvements. Here’s the official changelog of the final update for the OnePlus 3/3T:

    • Updated GMS apps
    • General bug fixes and improvements

As with all OTAs from OnePlus, the latest update for the OnePlus 3/3T is being rolled out in a staged fashion. The phase 1 rollout will only reach a handful of users and once the company confirms that there are no major issues with the update, it will be rolled out to the rest of the devices. As of now, we don’t have access to a download link for the update package. However, we’ll add the link to this post as and when it’s made available.
