Google Pay (Tez) for India gets a Material Theme redesign

Google recently attempted to unify all of its payment services and payment solutions, which included services formerly called Android Pay and Google Wallet, under a single umbrella: Google Pay. This unification included local solutions: Google Tez, an India-only payment service based on the UPI system, was also rolled into Google Pay. As you can guess, though, the Indian version of Google Pay has very little to do with the Google Pay you can find in the rest of the world, but that doesn’t mean it can’t receive love from Google. Now, the Google Pay for India app is receiving a Material Theme-based facelift for a change.

The older version did introduce a number of design features from the newer Material Design guidelines, but the newer one goes all-in on Google’s new Material Theme design language found in other apps, and in turn, looks more consistent with its international counterpart and, of course, other Google and Android 10 apps. The whole app has a cleaner, brighter, and more consistent look all around, more fitting with Google’s Material Theme guidelines. Some things, like the UPI ID that used to be visible on the header, have been moved around, while some design features have been introduced or removed.

All of these changes are rolling out through a server-side switch, but you do need to be on the latest version of the app, which you can download on the Google Play Store right now. Some users might find a number of these changes a bit offputting, while some might love it, depending on how accustomed you actually are to your layout. If you like what you see, though, then go to the Google Play Store to download it now to be in line for the rollout.

Realme will open experience stores and over 100 more service centers in India

Realme, as a brand, has grown spectacularly in recent times. What used to be a sub-brand of Oppo is now a wholly separate entity functioning as a sister company to Oppo and other companies under BBK Electronics. But perhaps the most interesting thing about Realme is how they’ve grown so much in such a short period of time. Since May 2018, with the launch of the Realme 1, and the ensuing months and years, the company has managed to crown itself as one of the top 10 smartphone manufacturers in the world and managing to seize 14.3% of the Indian market, which is quite the feat for having been in the smartphone marketplace for less than 2 years. They’re a complete hit, as you can probably see, and they have devices across different budget ranges. And ever since the Realme brand was officially unveiled, though, they’ve had a mostly India-centric strategy, which, being a rapidly emerging market, has greatly helped them gain ground quickly.

Their commitment to the Indian market is still in full steam, as the company’s CEO, Madhav Sheth, has announced that they will be greatly expanding their physical presence and scope with new stores and venues, which they are looking to open very soon. Additionally, the company is planning to open over 100 more service centers across the country, improving upon the current 345 service centers in India. This should make it much easier to have your phone fixed up should you face any issue, as you’ll have new service centers closer to you.

Realme had their beginnings as an online-only brand, so seeing them further expand their offline scope is pretty significant, especially for people that aren’t really accustomed to buying things online and prefer the classic way of walking in and buying their phones. As Realme keeps growing, and especially at the pace they’re growing, we’re also going to see the company’s offline presence magnify even more and more.

Unofficial LineageOS 17 GSI released for Project Treble compatible devices

As part of Android 8.o Oreo, Google released a major rearchitecting of the Android OS called Project Treble. The change aimed to help make OS updates easier, faster and less costly for device manufacturers. On top of that, Project Treble also made it possible to boot a generic, AOSP-based system image without modifying the boot or vendor image. Manufacturers seeking Google certification are required to test their devices for Treble compliance by booting this Generic System Image (GSI) and verify basic hardware functionality. However, they’re not required to make sure that everything works on the GSI. This resulted in GSIs being fairly functional on some devices and completely broken on others. To overcome this issue, developers released custom GSIs that are designed to work on as many devices as possible and with few bugs. Late last month, XDA Recognized Developer phhusson released an Android 10 based GSI that can be installed on any device that supports Project Treble. And now, XDA Recognized Contributor AndyYan has released an unofficial LineageOS 17 GSI.

The unofficial LineageOS 17 GSI offers a more customized and user-friendly version of the Android 10 GSI released last month. This new GSI should boot on any Android device that supports Project Treble, which means most devices that launched with Android 8.0+. Although it’s worth noting that Project Treble support is only required for devices with Google certifications, so you may face some issues while installing this GSI on devices imported from China.

Before you go ahead and install the LineageOS 17 GSI on your device, you should know that it’s based on phhusson’s release and, therefore, it carries forward some of the same issues and bugs. So it would be best to try out phhusson’s release on your device and report any bugs you encounter here. In case you don’t encounter any major issues, you can be sure that the LineageOS GSI would also work on your device. If you’re new to flashing GSIs, you can check out our tutorial here.

Sony Xperia 5 gets bootloader unlock and Open Devices support

Despite not being the favorite OEM of many, Sony Mobile has done a lot for the Android ecosystem. Between supporting the efforts of open source developers by contributing to AOSP and the advent and upkeep of their Open Devices program, there’s a lot to be said for Sony’s dedication to Android. The Open Devices program is an initiative that provides working AOSP code for Sony smartphones that are a part of the program. Developers can then use this working AOSP code to make custom ROMs. The Sony Xperia 5 is the latest addition to the Open Devices program.

Of course, to boot a custom ROM, you do need to have an unlocked bootloader as well. As a result, Sony has also announced that the Sony Xperia 5 can now be bootloader unlocked. The company has published build guides for AOSP for smartphones in the Open Devices program, and you’ll be able to modify and build your own custom ROMs to boot on the Xperia 5 with ease. You can view the working source code for an AOSP build for the Sony Xperia 5 on GitHub, which you can sync and compile. There are even kernel compilation guides and guides to access the UART port.

The Sony Xperia 5 is the latest smartphone from the company to be added to the Open Devices program. The Xperia 1, 10, and 10 Plus were all added this year as well. Despite waning interest in Sony’s smartphones over the years, the company has remained committed to the developer community. If you want to compile AOSP for the Sony Xperia 5, you can check out the link below.

How to use Adoptable Storage on the NVIDIA Shield TV (2019) [VIDEO]

The NVIDIA Shield TV (streaming stick) is one of the best Android TV devices on the market. It has 4K AI upscaling with Dolby Vision along with NVIDIA’s own gaming apps. One of the only big issues with the new Shield TV is its storage capacity. It only has 8GB of storage, which NVIDIA says is enough for “50-70 streaming apps,” but for some people, this isn’t enough. Luckily, NVIDIA included a microSD card slot to expand the storage.

In this video, XDA TV’s TK Bay shows you how to enable adoptable storage on the NVIDIA Shield TV to get more usable storage for apps and games. It’s as simple as selecting the right setting. You will need a compatible microSD card like the Kingston Canvas Select Plus. This lets you have a lot more storage for whatever you might want to put on your NVIDIA Shield TV.

If you have the Shield TV, all you need to do is go into Settings > Storage and then select your SD card. If it’s compatible, there will be a button that says “format and use as device storage.” Selecting this will enable adoptable storage allowing you to install apps onto the SD Card. Enabling adoptable storage will wipe the drive, but that’s a small inconvenience for a lot more device storage.

The NVIDIA Shield TV was provided by NVIDIA for review purposes. The Kingston microSD card was provided by Kingston.

Samsung Galaxy S11e leaked renders reveal triple rear cameras and curved display

As we inch our way closer to 2020, we are beginning to get our leaks at the next generation of flagships. The OnePlus 8 was leaked just a week after the launch of the OnePlus 7T, and leaks for the OnePlus 8 Pro followed along later. Just yesterday, we got our first look at the Samsung Galaxy S11, and today, @OnLeaks has released high-quality renders of the Samsung Galaxy S11e.

While the Galaxy S11 comes with a penta-rear camera setup, the Galaxy S11e comes with a more modest triple-rear camera system. The camera module follows the same design as the S11 though, despite bearing fewer cameras.

The back of the device on the S11e is not as exciting as the front is, mainly for the fact that the S11e will come with a curved display and not a flat display as the S10e did. This also means that there are no bezels on the left and right edges of the device and very thin bezels on the top and bottom. @OnLeaks mentions that the display could measure between 6.2″-6.3″ diagonally.

What it also shares with its elder siblings is the centered punch-hole front camera, as well as the fact that there is no headphone jack on this device either. The device is said to roughly measure 151.7 x 69.1mm x 7.9mm, though the thickness increases to 9.1mm around the camera bump.

As per our own sources, the Samsung Galaxy S11e will be available in both 5G (SM-G981) and LTE (SM-G980) variants, though India will only get the LTE variant while the USA will only get the 5G variant.

Internal specifications for the Galaxy S11e are not yet confirmed through reliable sources, but based on past trends, one can guess that the phone will share several hardware and software features with others in the lineup. However, it is unlikely that the S11e will come with a 108MP primary camera, as it will be positioned as a cheaper alternative to the main phones.
