Huawei MatePad Pro tablet launched in China

Android tablets are a dying breed, but there are a number of OEMs trying to keep it alive by spinning innovations of their own. Among these OEMs is Samsung, with its Galaxy Tab line, and Huawei, which is still putting out new flagship devices despite the hardships they’re currently going through. Earlier this year, we saw Huawei launch their MediaPad M6, which was equipped with a flagship-grade Kirin 980 processor as well as other flagship specifications. Now, the company has unveiled that tablet’s successor, the MatePad Pro.

Huawei MatePad Pro

With the MatePad Pro, Huawei wants to take on the similarly named iPad Pro from Apple. And this is evidenced not just in the name, but also in its specs and physical design features. For starters, the MatePad Pro, as previously leaked, greatly reduces bezels, just like the newer iPad Pro models, and, in turn, greatly improves the screen-to-body ratio. Huawei is touting a 90% figure, in fact. But while the iPad Pro features Face ID hardware in that reduced bezel, Huawei skips on that kind of technology and goes for a cornered punch-hole display similar to the one found in other Huawei/Honor devices, such as the Honor 20 line.

The tablet is powered by Huawei’s Kirin 990 processor, which is the same SoC found in the Huawei Mate 30 lineup and, as of the time of writing, also one of the most powerful mobile SoCs out there. And if you’re guessing, yes, this won’t have Google apps and services because of US trade restrictions–although it is probably not being launched outside of China anyway, and in China, this is not a big deal as no phones come with Google services whatsoever.

It’s launching in its home market of China on December 12th and will start at CNY 3,299 (roughly $470) for the base model with 6 GB RAM/128 GB storage. If this were to see a global release with Google services, which isn’t likely at least for the time being, it would definitely battle the likes of Apple and Samsung competitors at a much more affordable price point.

How do you like Huawei’s newest tablet?

MediaTek is making 5G modems for PCs in partnership with Intel

Earlier this year in May, Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek announced a new 7nm 5G SoC with a Helio M70 modem, ARM Cortex-A77 CPU, and Mali-G77 GPU. The new 5G SoC from the company is the first chipset to feature a 5G modem on-die, rather than having a discreet modem like the Snapdragon 855 or the Exynos 9820. While the chipset is yet to make an appearance on a production smartphone, it may soon land in the next generation of Intel-powered PCs.

MediaTek has today announced a partnership with Intel to bring the new 5G modems to PCs. As part of the partnership, Intel has already started work on a 5G solution for key consumer and commercial laptops. MediaTek, on the other hand, is further developing its 5G modem and working with partners to manufacture the solution. According to a press release, Dell and HP are expected to be the first OEMs to ship laptops with Intel and MediaTek’s new 5G solution, with the rollout scheduled for early 2021.

Speaking of the partnership, MediaTek’s President Joe Chen was quoted as saying, “Our 5G modem for PCs, developed in partnership with Intel, is integral to making 5G accessible and available across home and mobile platforms…5G will usher in the next era of PC experiences, and working with Intel, an industry leader in computing, highlights MediaTek’s expertise in designing 5G technology for global markets. With this partnership, consumers will be able to browse, stream and game faster on their PCs, be we also expect them to innovate with 5G in ways we have not yet imagined.” As mentioned earlier, the new 5G modem for PCs is based, in part, on MediaTek’s Helio M70 5G modem.

Google Drive tests a new search UI and starting tab setting while Google Keep tests bringing back the FAB

Google offers a vast suite of apps on Android and much like other developers on the platform, the company routinely pushes updates for its apps. The updates often introduce new features and improvements, and sometimes we’re able to discover upcoming features by reverse-engineering the app’s APK. If at times a feature is near completion we also manage to manually trigger it before it rolls out to users, giving us a fair bit of insight regarding its functionality. For instance, we were recently able to activate manual face tagging in Google Photos and we got a clear look at how the feature would work when released. Now, we’ve managed to trigger a couple of upcoming features in Google Drive and Google Keep.

Google Drive Starting Tab Google Drive Starting Tab

Our Editor-in-Chief Mishaal Rahman has successfully activated a new setting in the latest version of Google Drive which will allow you to configure which tab opens up on app launch. The setting, appropriately named Starting Tab, can be found within the app settings under the Home section and it allows you to choose a starting tab from four available options. Additionally, Mishaal also managed to activate a slightly redesigned search UI in the app (as seen below), which now shows all the search parameters and users right at the top under the search bar.

Google Drive Old Search UI Google Drive Redesigned Search UI

The latest update for Google Keep has also received a UI redesign that Mishaal managed to trigger ahead of the official rollout. The redesign brings back the floating action button (FAB) to the bottom bar. The icons for creating a checklist, hand drawing, voice note, or image note have been moved to the left side of the bottom bar, with the FAB taking their position on the right. The button has Google’s signature colors in a plus shape and you can easily take a text note by tapping on the button. As reported by Android Police, the redesigned UI has already started appearing for some users. This leads us to believe that it might be a server-side update and should roll out to more users in the coming days.

[Update: Realme UX release schedule] Realme announces its Android 10 update roadmap for the Realme X series

Update 1 (11/25/19 @ 03:15 AM EST):  Realme announces ColorOS 7 update release roadmap for Indian devices, including a beta for Realme 3 Pro, Realme XT, and the Realme X2 Pro starting December 18, 2019.

The table below has been updated with a month-wise roll-out schedule for the India and China. The remaining parts of the original article from October 30, 2019, remain unchanged.

Realme is treading with a fast pace, especially when it comes to launching new devices. Earlier this month, they launched their first true flagship, the Realme X2 Pro, with Snapdragon 855+, 50W SuperVOOC charging, 64MP quad cameras, and so many other exciting features. At the same event in Madrid, Spain, the company also launched the Realme X2, which is the Realme XT but with faster 30W charging and a Snapdragon 730G for better performance, and the Realme Q (Realme 5 Pro in India). But one aspect of Realme phones that has left user expectations sore is the software and the company is now working to bring the experience closer to stock Android with ColorOS 7.

In the meantime, Realme is also working on making Android 10 available to the users and had earlier announced its timeline for the update for several older devices. They have now announced the Android 10 roll-out schedule for newer devices including the Realme X2 Pro and the Realme X2. As per the update, Realme X2 Pro will start receiving the Color OS 7 update based on Android 10 in the second quarter of 2020.

Notably, the schedule for the roll-out is for Chinese variants of the smartphones so we expect the global roll-out to come in the weeks following the initial updates. Realme should reveal dates for the Indian variants while launching the phone next month.

Update 1: Realme’s ColorOS 7 & Android 10 update schedules for Realme 3 Pro, XT, X2 Pro, others

Realme has updated the ColorOS 7 update schedule for India with a month-wise breakdown. In India, Realme will release a custom UI based on ColorOS 7 based on Android 10. This echoes their promise of bringing a UI closer to stock Android but we’re not sure of the exact changes yet. OPPO is set to announce ColorOS 6 in India on November 26, 2019, which is when we might get to learn more about this customized UI.

ColorOS 7 beta will also be released in India and China for certain devices starting December 18, 2019. Realme notes that users who’ve signed up for ColorOS 6.7 beta on Realme XT and Project X for Realme 3 Pro will also be eligible for the ColorOS 7 beta update but the toll out may take as long as Feb 2020. Beta registrations for Realme X2 Pro beta will begin on November 27 in India while the registration link will go live after the company concludes a poll on which devices besides the X2 Pro must get the beta update.

The table below notes the roll-out schedule for ColorOS 7 based on Android 10 for China and India. No announcement has been made by the European team for the update in the region.

Google Nest Mini now available in India for ₹4,499 ($63)

At the Made by Google event for 2019, Google announced the new Google Nest Mini, among other products such as the Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, Google Nest WiFi, Google Pixel Buds, and the Google Pixelbook Go. While devices like the Pixel 4 series have been confirmed to not come to India at all, Google is at least launching the Nest Mini in the country. Today, the company has officially announced the new Google Nest Mini will be sold in India officially for a price of ₹4,499 ($63).

The Google Nest Mini is a smart speaker with Google Assistant support. You can ask the Assistant questions about the weather, traffic, places, flights, movie times, and so much more. You can create routines to automate certain actions, and you can also control any product that integrates with the Google Assistant ecosystem. Finally, you can cast any audio to the device using Google Cast or Bluetooth, which is why the device is called a smart “speaker.”

While Google pitches the Nest Mini as a successor to the Home Mini, it is virtually identical to the Home Mini. The two devices are exactly the same shape with a short, circular design, and they’re also the same size at 42mm in height and 98mm in circumference. Both devices are also covered by Google’s signature fabric material which is overlaid on top of 4 LEDs in the middle. They’re both powered by a single micro-USB cable, lack a 3.5mm headphone port for audio output, have a mute switch on the side, support Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac dual-band (2.4 / 5.0 GHz), and support Bluetooth (though the new device supports 5.0). The only major difference between the two is that the new Nest Mini can be easily hung on a wall by attaching the device to a hook or screw.

The Google Nest Mini is available in Chalk and Charcoal color variants in India. The smart speaker can be purchased from Flipkart starting today for a price of ₹4,499 ($63).

Realme X50 will be Realme’s first smartphone with 5G

Following the recent launch of its first true flagship — the Realme X2 Pro — Chinese smartphone manufacturer Realme is prepping up to launch its first 5G enabled handset. As per a recent teaser shared by the company’s Chief Marketing Officer, Xu Qi Chase, the upcoming device will be called the Realme X50. The teaser image shared on Weibo further reveals that the Realme X50 will offer support for dual-mode 5G, which means that the device will support both 5G Standalone (SA) and Non-Standalone (NSA) networks, just like the upcoming Redmi K30 5G. However, it isn’t clear whether the Realme X50 will make use of a MediaTek SoC or a Qualcomm SoC to offer 5G support.

The image also gives us our first glimpse at the device, highlighting its pill-shaped punch-hole display which will house dual selfie cameras. This is another feature that the device shares with the Redmi K30, which will also feature a punch-hole display with a similar design. However, the cutout on the Redmi K30 is on the opposite end of the display. It’s worth noting that back in September this year, Realme released a statement confirming an upcoming 5G smartphone based on the Snapdragon 7 series, so the Realme X50 could feature a Snapdragon 7 series chip. While we don’t have any further information on the specifications or release timeline for the device, Realme India’s CEO Madhav Sheth has previously confirmed that the company will launch its first 5G device this year. This, along with the recent teaser, leads us to believe that the Realme X50 might be launched in China in the next few weeks.
