[Update: Schedule] ColorOS 7 for Realme phones will be closer to stock Android

Update 1 (11/26/19 @ 00:38 AM ET): Ahead of the ColorOS 7 global launch in India, Realme CEO Madhav Sheth announced the update schedule for Realme devices. The full schedule can be found below. The original article is as follows.

Since its debut last year in May, Realme has slowly secured a spot for itself among the top five smartphone companies in India. The company has launched a wide array of Android devices, spanning across various price brackets. When it comes to hardware specifications, Realme almost always offers a good back for your buck. But on the software front, the company’s ColorOS Android skin (which it shares with its parent company Oppo) isn’t all that great. However, the company aimed to change that with RealmeOS. Earlier this year in August, Realme’s CEO Madhav Sheth confirmed that the company was working on RealmeOS and the new Android skin was expected to roll out this year. But now it seems like Realme has shelved the idea.

In the latest episode of AskMadhav, Sheth revealed that Realme will continue to provide ColorOS on its smartphones. However, he added that the company has planned some major changes for ColorOS 7 specifically for Realme devices. While Sheth didn’t elaborate on these changes, he did mention that ColorOS 7 for Realme devices will be close to stock Android, which is something several users have been demanding for quite some time.

As of now, we have no information from the company regarding the update schedule for ColorOS 7. However, when asked about the ColorOS 6.0.1 update for Realme devices, Sheth said, “why 6.0.1, let’s directly roll out ColorOS 7”. Since ColorOS 6.0.1 is already available for the Realme XT and Realme 5, this statement leads us to believe that the ColorOS 7 rollout is just around the corner. It’s also worth noting that Realme is expected to release the Realme X2 Pro in India next month and the company might roll out the new software experience with its first true flagship device. Additionally, Sheth also mentioned that the company might consider launching a VOOC fast charging power bank if there’s enough demand.

Update: ColorOS 7 Rollout Schedule for Realme devices

On Twitter, Mr. Madhav Sheth, the CEO of Realme, revealed the ColorOS 7 update schedule for 11 Realme smartphones. The dates on this schedule mark the first wave of the stable version rollout for each device. Although the exact dates were not provided, we at least now know the general timeline for when ColorOS 7 will roll out.

  • January 2020 – Realme 3 Pro, Realme XT
  • February 2020 – Realme X, Realme 5 Pro
  • March 2020 – Realme X2 Pro
  • April 2020 – Realme 3, Realme 3i
  • May 2020 – Realme 5, Realme 5s
  • June 2020 – Realme 2 Pro
  • Q3 2020 – Realme C2

[Update: Launch Date] Redmi K30 will be Redmi’s first 5G phone, will come with dual punch-hole front cameras

Update 1 (11/26/19 @ 00:11 AM ET): General Manager of the Redmi brand, Lu Weibing, has confirmed the Redmi K30 will launch on December 10, 2019. More details below. The original article follows.

Xiaomi’s Redmi sub-brand is known in the market for its affordable yet high value-for-money lineups, namely the Redmi series, the Redmi A series and the Redmi Note series. This year, the company ventured into flagship territory with this branding, aiming to provide a flagship experience at an affordable price with devices like the Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro, or the Xiaomi Mi 9T and Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro as they are known in Europe. Xiaomi is busy launching other devices like the Redmi 8 and Redmi 8A in India, and soon, the Redmi Note 8 Pro too. But the Chinese arm of the company is moving on forward with its release schedule, teasing the first set of features of the next Redmi flagship, the Redmi K30.

Redmi K30 5G - 5G Non-Standalone and 5G Standalone

Redmi’s General Manager, Mr. Lu Weibing, officially kickstarted the teasers of the Redmi K30 in August 2019 when he revealed that it will come with 5G support. During the Redmi 8 launch event in China today, he offered some more details. According to him, the Redmi K30 will be the first 5G smartphone from this Xiaomi sub-brand. Not only will the Redmi K30 support 5G, but it will also support 5G in both SA (Standalone) and NSA (Non-Standalone) mode. NSA deployments are part of the first rollout of 5G networks, wherein the 5G network and services will be aided by existing 4G deployment. Once the initial infrastructure is set up, carriers will begin deployment of SA 5G. Having both NSA and SA support in one device will allow the same phone to take advantage of the latter parts of the 5G rollout without needing a new device. While the Redmi K30 is not expected to be the cheapest 5G smartphone, we do expect it to be high value-for-money in line with the brand philosophy.

Redmi K30 teaser

Next, the Redmi K30 will also come with a dual front camera setup, housed within an elongated pill-shaped display cutout or punch-hole. The release of this device will mean that Xiaomi has released phones with fullscreen displays, with waterdrop notches, and with punch-hole displays, essentially touching upon most current design trends.

The release timeline for the Redmi K30 is not known at this stage. The Xiaomi Mi 9 was launched in February 2019, while the Xiaomi Mi 9T/Redmi K20 was launched in June 2019. We speculate that the Redmi K30 could possibly be announced in early 2020.

Update 1: Launch Date

Lu Weibing, General Manager of Redmi, announced on his Weibo page that the Redmi K30 series will be announced on December 10th.

Redmi K30Thanks to a few leaks, we potentially know some key details of the K30. We suspect the device may have a 120Hz high refresh rate display, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and Sony’s new 60MP IMX686. Alleged live images of the device corroborate the 120Hz refresh rate detail, but also potentially reveal that one of the devices will be powered by either the Snapdragon 730 or the Snapdragon 730G.

[Update: Official] Google Assistant’s new Ambient Mode starts rolling out

Update 1 (11/25/19 @ 11:58 PM ET): Google today confirmed that the Google Assistant‘s Ambient Mode will start rolling out to some devices. More details below. The original article follows.

At IFA this year, Google announced a new feature in the Google Assistant called Ambient Mode. This mode turns your Android smartphone or tablet into a smart display by showing information from your calendar, the current weather, your notifications, your reminders, music controls, and your smart home controls. You can even show photos from Google Photos, turning your smartphone or tablet into a digital photo frame. To save power, Ambient Mode is only active when your phone is charging or your tablet is docked.

Source: Google

When Google first announced the feature, they only made it available for two tablets, the Lenovo Smart Tab M8 HD and Lenovo Yoga Smart Tab, and two smartphones, the Nokia 7.2 and Nokia 6.2. However, we’ve received tips that indicate the feature is seeing a broader release. At least two users with the Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro have reported receiving the new Assistant Ambient Mode, and one user with the Nokia 6.1 on Reddit says they have the new mode.

Our first tipster who sent us these screenshots, XDA Senior Member abhishek987, told us that he saw a notification from the Google App to set it up, but he didn’t take screenshots of the setup process. When the feature goes live, you’ll be able to toggle it in Settings > Assistant > Say “Hey Google,” at least on Android 10. We’re not sure where the setting will appear on older Android devices since the new “Assistant” subsetting page seems to be exclusive to Android 10.

Update: Shortly after publishing this article, a user in our Discord group said they received Ambient Mode on their Nokia 6.1 Plus. A user on Reddit also reports seeing the mode on their POCOPhone F1, and they also shared more screenshots of the setup. Lastly, Reddit user with the Nokia 6.1 left a comment on this article stating that, on Android 9 Pie, Ambient Mode can be toggled in Google App Settings > Assistant > Devices (Phone).

If you see Google Assistant’s new Ambient Mode in settings, let us know below!

Update 1: Officially Rolling Out

Google published a YouTube video outlining the new Ambient Mode in Google Assistant. The video states that “this experience will be available on select devices on Android O and above.” Google says Ambient Mode is “deeply integrated” into the Android OS, but it’s unclear what that means. The video says the feature will be available on Android 8.0 Oreo and above, and according to Ron Amadeo from ArsTechnica, that includes only devices from Sony, Nokia, Xiaomi, and “Transsion.” The rollout begins next week with an update to the Google App.

How to get the Pixel Launcher with overview text and image selection on any rooted Android 10 device

When Google switched up the Overview screen in Android P they introduced a new feature called “Smart Selection.” Basically, switching the Pixel Launcher Overview to horizontal scrolling cards with high-resolution previews allowed OCR (optical character recognition) to work on them. You can literally select text and images from what is essentially a screenshot of the last state of the app. Unfortunately, Google limited this feature to the Pixel 2 and newer Pixel devices.

Of course, these limitations are easily broken if you’re willing to do a little modding. You can get text and image selection working on the Pixel Launcher Overview screen on any rooted Android 10 device with the QuickSwitch Magisk Module and a few other tricks. Thanks to XDA Senior Member remewer, if you already have a rooted Android 10 device with Magisk (20.1+), the setup process is pretty simple.

  1. Install the Pixel Launcher APK (found here) but do not set it as your default launcher.
  2. Open the Magisk Manager and search for the QuickSwitch module.
  3. Install the module and reboot your phone.
  4. Open QuickSwitch and select Pixel Launcher as the Recents provider. Reboot your phone.
  5. Set Pixel Launcher as your default launcher.
  6. Install the Device Personalization Services Magisk module (found here). Reboot your phone.
  7. Open the Pixel Launcher settings and select Suggestions and enable both options.
  8. That’s it!
