OPPO ColorOS 7 with Android 10 announced for global markets

Android 10 is the latest version of the world’s most popular operating system, and OEMs have been working hard to roll out the same to their portfolio of devices. OPPO recently announced that its custom UX, ColorOS, will also be making the jump to Android 10 with ColorOS 7. After unveiling the same in China, OPPO has now announced ColorOS 7 with Android 10 for markets outside of China, at an event in New Delhi yesterday.

ColorOS 7 attempts to reforms OPPO’s custom UX with a focus towards efficiency, convenience, and simplicity. OPPO is employing what it calls “Infinite Design”, which is a more lightweight visual design with fewer distractions and a greater focus on the content on hand. Modal Pages incorporated throughout the UX help to reduce the clicks needed to get basic tasks done, as well as making it easier to get things done when using the phone with just one hand.

Example of Modal Pages

The icons within the UX have been updated with all new designs, implementing layers that allow for greater adaptability and customizations.

ColorOS 7 has also been updated with new sound effects, wallpapers, and live wallpapers, with special localized content for India such as the Hawa Mahal Live Wallpaper that changes appearance throughout the day.

Android 10’s Dark Mode also makes an appearance within ColorOS 7, of course. But OPPO has added onto the experience by enabling it on several popular apps, like WhatsApp, that don’t have Dark Mode rolled out yet.

OPPO ColorOS 7

Android’s screenshot functionality is also seeing an upgrade in ColorOS 7. You can take screenshots with the three-finger swipe down gesture, but you can also choose to take long screenshots, as well as short screenshots.

If you seek more customizability, ColorOS 7 also incorporates what OPPO is calling “Universal Theme”, which allows you to theme various aspects of the UX without needing to resort to other complex solutions. You can choose one of the several themes available in the Theme Store.

Or, if you cannot locate the one that fulfills your needs, you can always create your own theme through OPPO’s Theme Editor.

Beyond the visible UI, OPPO is also employing other solutions in ColorOS 7 to make the experience more responsive, faster and smoother to use. Cache Preload attempts to improve app cold starts by as much as 25%; while oSense is a scheduling mechanism that gives priority to front-end and user-related threads to optimize touch response and frame rates; and oMem is a priority management solution that allocates higher priority to the most frequently used apps. OPPO also talked about a System Anti-aging Solution called UFS+, though details are sparse on how exactly does it help keep the system fresh and away from eventual slowdown.

ColorOS 7 also comes with changes and improvements to the imaging experience on OPPO smartphones. Night Mode has been upgraded to Ultra Night Mode, focusing on optimizing the clarity, brightness, and color of photos taken at night through multi-frame HDR and AI algorithms. Post-processing durations also see improvements as photos are claimed to be generated within 2.5 seconds on select phone models in Ultra Night Mode. Smart AI noise cancellation is also another imaging-related feature, claiming to repair pixel-level defects by anticipating noise areas. AI Beautification 2.0 focuses on image sharpness and finer tuning for natural photos. OPPO also invited attention to the previous Google CameraX API that will allow third-party applications to use camera functions such as HDR and more.

Gaming optimizations also make their way to ColorOS 7 in the form of improvements to oSense, Game Space, and Game Assistant. oSense aims to improve touch response by ~21% and frame rates by ~38%. Game Space is a space to manage and quickly launch games, while Game Assistant provides features such as split-screen and DND support within games.

OPPO’s ColorOS 7 also provides privacy protection features such as the ability to provide blank data when apps request for user data. Private Safe protects user-selected files by transferring them to a folder where they cannot be accessed, read, or modified by other applications.

Users in India can also enjoy Doc Vault, which has been developed in collaboration with DigiLocker, Indian digital document issuing platform, allowing users to store and access digital versions of their official documents and certificates from within the phone.

ColorOS 7 also comes with OPPO’s own Soloop application, which allows users to create social media-friendly videos with relative ease.

Other key highlights for ColorOS 7 include Riding Mode, which allows you to focus on driving by allowing calls only from specified contacts and muting other notifications; Music Party, which allows you to pair with other smartphone and play music in sync; and Smart Assistant, which aims to be a one-stop-shop for less experienced users to get information at a glance and do common actions.

OPPO ColorOS 7: Rollout

OPPO ColorOS 7 begins its global rollout with the OPPO Reno and OPPO Reno 10x Zoom, with the update already arriving on these devices in a staged manner. Devices like the OPPO Reno2, OPPO F11 series will get the update next month, while devices like the OPPO Find X series, OPPO Reno Z, OPPO Reno R17 series will get the update in Q1 2020. The fourth batch of devices will get their updates by Q2 2020. Though for all of these batches, expect beta versions to arrive prior to the stable update to select users.

If you would like to see a preview of these features, you can also check out our Facebook Live coverage straight from the event!

Upcoming 5G Xiaomi smartphone will support 66W fast charging

Over the past year, there’s been a bit of a fast-charging war going on in the smartphone space. Companies have been coming up with insane 100-watt and 120-watt fast-charging technologies on their smartphones that can charge up a 4,000mAh battery in as little as 13 minutes. While these are yet to make their way over to production smartphones, manufacturers like Oppo and Realme have already come out with devices featuring support for 65-watt and 50-watt fast charging. Now, it seems like Xiaomi is prepping up to join the league with a new device that will include support for even faster charging speeds.

Xiaomi 5G smartphone 66W charging

We’ve recently discovered a certification listing of an upcoming Xiaomi device that will include support for 66-watt fast charging. The device (model no. M2001J1E, M2001J1C), was spotted on China’s CCC certification authority’s website. As per the listing, the device will include support for 5G connectivity and will come with a fast-charging adapter capable of delivering 6Amps at 11 Volts. While there’s no information from the company regarding the upcoming device, we believe that it could be the recently teased Xiaomi Redmi K30 which is scheduled to be revealed early next month.

As per the recent teasers, the upcoming Xiaomi Redmi K30 will include support for dual-mode 5G. This means that the device will support 5G in both SA (Standalone) and NSA (Non-Standalone) modes. For the unaware, NSA deployments are part of the first rollout of 5G networks, wherein the 5G network and services will be aided by existing 4G deployment. Once the initial infrastructure is set up, carries will begin deployment of SA 5G. Since the device features support for both NSA and SA modes, users will be able to take advantage of the latter parts of the 5G rollout without needing a new device. The teasers also reveal that the Xiaomi Redmi K30 will feature a pill-shaped punch-hole display up front to house the selfie cameras.

ASUS rolls out the stable Android 10 update for the ZenFone 5Z

Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer Asus has been hard at work releasing Android 10 updates for its flagship devices. Earlier this month, the company rolled out a stable ZenUI 6 build based on Android 10 for the ZenFone 6/6Z. Soon thereafter, the company started recruiting Android 10 beta testers for the ROG Phone II. The ZenFone 5Z, Asus’ flagship from last year, was also in line to receive the Android 10 treatment and had already received a beta update late last month. Now, the company has finally started rolling out a stable build of Android 10 for the device.

The OTA update for the ZenFone 5Z brings all the new features introduced in Android 10, along with a couple of minor changes in Asus’ Zen UI. Here are the official release notes for ZenUI 6 (v100.04.44.98) on the ZenFone 5Z:

  • Upgraded system to Android 10
  • Removed Google Play system update
  • Removed Page Marker, ZeniMoki, Selfie Master, Beauty Live, Kids Mode, Easy Mode, weather animation setting, AI charging, WebStorage, Go2 Pay, Report Location in Safeguard, and Yandex cloud option in File Manager
  • Removed the support of Twin app for “Arena of Valor, PUBG, Vainglory, and Injustice 2”
  • Please back up your data before upgrading to Android 10. If you want to downgrade your device’s software version to Android 9 by official software package, it will erase all data from your device’s internal storage.
  • Upgraded APN settings
    • Add the APN setting of Canada Public Mobile
    • Modify ASUS APN Setting
  • Moved Themes and Mobile Manager to Advanced Settings
  • Some 3rd part apps aren’t compatible with Android 10 yet

It’s worth noting that ZenUI 6 on the ZenFone 5Z offers a close to stock Android experience. As seen in the release notes above, Asus has removed several additional settings from its Android skin to offer users an experience more consistent with stock Android. The update also features Android 10’s system-wide dark mode and the new navigation gestures. Along with all the new features introduced in Android 10, ZenUI 6 also brings a couple of additional features like a native screen recorder, a special mode for one-handed use, Asus’ Game Genie, and more. You can check your device for the update by heading over to the System Updates section within Settings. It’s worth noting that the update is being pushed to devices in a staged fashion, so it may take a few days before you receive the OTA notification.

[Update 2: 5 More Devices Next Month] PlayGalaxy Link lets you stream PC games to your Samsung Galaxy smartphone

Update 2 (11/26/19 @ 10:05 PM ET): Samsung has announced that the PlayGalaxy Link app will support 5 additional Galaxy smartphones next month. More details below.

Update 1 (11/05/19 @ 6:25 AM ET): The Samsung PlayGalaxy Link app is now available for the Galaxy S10 series too. Scroll to the bottom for more information. The article as published on September 11, 2019, is preserved as below.

During the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 launch, there was one feature that flew under the radar because of how packed the event was: PlayGalaxy Link. This feature lets you stream games from your computer to your phone. It’s a really great service, especially as we head into the era of 5G connectivity when apps need a lot of bandwidth and low latency.

PlayGalaxy Link Website || Parsec Game Streaming Website

PlayGalaxy Link is based on a service called Parsec. Samsung worked with Parsec to brand their technology into a Samsung exclusive. PlayGalaxy Link will connect to your Samsung account on both the phone and computer. It will find all the games installed on your computer and list them. You can then select which game you want to play on your phone using the PlayGalaxy Link app. The games will run over 4G, 5G, or Wi-Fi connectivity. This is different than Steam Link which requires you to be on the same wireless network.

Samsung PlayGalaxy Link is only available on the Galaxy Note 10 series of phones right now, but it will likely be released for older devices in the coming months. If you want to use what is essentially the same app but on any smartphone, you can try Parsec instead. Back in November of last year, I made a video on this service. In the video, I showed you how to set it up with your gaming PC and stream to any phone. You can even rent out a cloud PC from one of a few providers if you don’t have a gaming PC to stream from.

Both of these services are actually really great for gamers. You can play PC quality games while you’re on your phone. They’re not hard to use either; they’re essentially plug-and-play.

Update: PlayGalaxy Link available for the Samsung Galaxy S10 series

PlayGalaxy Link has been updated v1.0.5 Beta with support for all the phones in the Samsung Galaxy S10 series, namely the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, Galaxy S10e, and Galaxy S10 5G.

Update 2: Support for 5 More Devices

Samsung has announced that its PlayGalaxy Link service is coming to the Galaxy Fold, Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+, Galaxy Note 9, and Galaxy A90 in early December 2019. The beta is available in South Korea, US, UK, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Singapore, and Russia. The game controller shown in the press release can only be purchased in the USA and Korea through the Samsung Mobile Accessory Partnership Program, but you’ll be able to game with most Bluetooth or wired game controllers. To get started, visit playgalaxy.com on your PC.

[Update: New “Manage your library” Page] Google Photos renames the Assistant tab to “For You”

Update (11/26/19 @ 4:55 PM ET): Google Photos is rolling out a new “Manage your library” settings page.

For a while now, the Google Photos app has included an “Assistant” tab. This is the place where all of Google’s automatically created creations are shown. Things like photo collages, animations, movies, albums, and more. The name of the tab has always felt like an implication that Google Assistant is creating these things, but it can be confusing if you’re not familiar with it. Google is changing the name of this tab to “For You.”

The folks over at Android Police first noticed that the Google Support page for Google Photos had changed all instances of “Assistant” to “For You.” Shortly thereafter, people started noticing the change in the Android app. A few of us here at XDA already have the new tab as well. This is purely a name change, at least for now. Everything else is exactly the same as before.

Screenshots from Max Weinbach

“For You” certainly makes a lot more sense and better describes what is shown in the tab. This also brings Google Photos in line with Google Maps, which also has a “For You” tab. The web version has already been updated as well if you go to photos.google.com/foryou. This is a small change, but small changes can be important.

Update: New “Manage your library” Page

At the time of the original article above, the “For You” tab was a simple name change. Now, it appears Google is changing how the tab actually functions. All the suggestion cards that used to show up on the For You tab have been bundled into a “Manage your library” page. This page can be accessed from the slide-out menu as well. This means you won’t see suggestions for things like fixing sideways photos and archiving backed up photos along with Google’s auto creations.
