Digital Wellbeing’s Flip to Shhh gesture is now available on the Pixel 2

With the launch of Android Pie, Google kicked off its push into “Digital Wellbeing.” One of the features that was originally exclusive to the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL was “Flip to Shhh.” This is a handy feature that allows you to immediately enable Do Not Disturb mode when flipping your phone over. Flip to Shhh was also made available on the Pixel 3a and Pixel 4 series too, but it looks to be rolling out to the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL as well.

Pixel 2 XDA Forums / Pixel 2 XL XDA Forums

There are methods out there to get Flip to Shhh functionality on any Android phone, of course. Google can never keep a good feature away from all Android users. According to some Redditors in the Google Pixel subreddit, Flip to Shhh has started showing up on the Pixel 2. Several users with both the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have reported that the feature is now available in the Digital Wellbeing or Gestures settings.

Flip to Shhh is rolling out to the Pixel 2 with the latest update to Digital Wellbeing beta. You can opt-in to the beta on the Digital Wellbeing Play Store page. We’re not sure why Google kept this feature away from older Pixel devices for so long since it’s not really a huge selling point. Regardless, we’re glad to see this handy feature make its way to the Pixel 2.

Best Budget Phones Under €300 in 2019

Looking for a great budget phone? While 2019 saw some record breaking high prices on new flagship phones, there were also plenty of new phones released for those of you on a budget. These are the best phones under €300 available in 2019.

Best Phone Under €300: Honor 9X €299.00

The Honor 9X is the first in the X-series line to feature a pop-up camera. This pop-up camera has a fully motorized design. When the selfie mode is activated, the camera will quickly rise from the top of the phone. To really enhance the full-screen notch-free effect of the phone, Honor fitter a larger display into the phone at 6.59″. The end result is a large full screen phone with a very convenient motorized pop-up camera.

With the 9X, Honor put a great deal of attention into the photography aspect of this phone. The device is fitted with a 48MP triple camera that includes an 8MP ultra-wide lens and a 2MP depth sensor. The f/1.8 aperture is paired with the half-inch sensor to produce super clear photos. The AIS super night mode promises improve your low-light photos. Observe some of our initial sample shots here.

Honor 9X

Aside from the pop-up camera, the Honor 9X sports some fantastic specs and features for a phone under $300. The Honor 9X features the Kirin 710F and 6GB of RAM. There are other models that come with the Kirin 810, but for one reason or another this isn’t included in every model. This makes the processor a very mild upgrade from the previous Honor 8X which came with the Kirin 710. With that being said, there is not much to criticize when it comes to performance on this phone.

Honor 9X Specs
Chipset HiSilicon Kirin 710F
RAM/Storage 4/6GB 64/128GB
Display 6.59″ 1080x2340p
Selfie Camera Motorized pop-up 16 MP
Main Camera 48+8+2MP
GPU Mali-G51 MP4
Battery 4000mAh
Software Android 9.0 EMUI 9.1

Overall, the Honor 9X is the best of the X-Series so far. While the camera is usually the main feature to suffer in budget phones, the 48MP shooter on the 9X is actually one of the best aspects of this device. The Honor 9X is a great deal for anyone looking to get the most out of their smartphone camera.

This is the best phone under €300 in 2019, but there are plenty of other great budget phones that came out this year. See some of the other good options below.

Honor 8X and Honor 10 will get EMUI 10 based on Android Q according to Honor India

Update 11/27/19 @ 8:45 AM ET: EMUI 10 enters beta testing phase for the Honor 8X. Scroll to the bottom for more details. The article as published on July 29, 2019, is preserved as below.

The last two months since the executive order by the U.S. government have been full of suspense and dilemma for users who own or wish to buy Android devices made by Huawei and Honor. While Huawei has reportedly been working on a homegrown alternative to Android, the development of EMUI 10 based on Android Q appears to be going on with full swing too. Back in June, we saw the first preview of Android Q running on the Huawei P30 Pro and even saw Huawei’s optimism about rolling out Android Q update, in spite of the hurdles by the U.S. government, for at least 15 Huawei devices. For Honor, however, there has been no such assurances yet except for the Honor 20/20 Pro. But as per the company’s Twitter handle, Android Q is already under consideration for the Honor 8X and the Honor 10.

Honor 8X XDA Forums / Honor 10 XDA Forums

The Honor 10 was launched last summer with EMUI 8.1 based on Android 8.1 Oreo and eventually updated to EMUI 9.0 based on Android 9 Pie last year itself. The Honor 8X ran a slightly refined UI out-of-the-box with EMUI 8.2 based on Android 8.1 Oreo when it arrived in fall last year but got an update to Android Pie only in March this year.

Now, as per the official Twitter account of Honor India, the development for EMUI 10 based on Android Q is already under development for both – the Honor 10 and the Honor 8X. On the other hand, we don’t see any assurance about Android Q update for other popular devices including the Honor Play, Honor V20/View20, etc.

Notably, the company did announce that most of these devices will receive EMUI 9.1 (or Magic 2.1) update which brings subtle UI and performance improvements over the earlier Android Pie build. Honor India did not share any information about a tentative date for the update in either of the case so we’ll have to wait for another announcement in this respect.

In the meantime, the Honor 7X from 2017 may finally start receiving Android Pie update by the end of this month. The company started recruiting beta testers in India in May after showing signs of hesitation but there has been no information about the update since then.

If you’re excited about the update, you may also take a look at our hands-on of EMUI 10 based on Android Q. This build runs on the P30 Pro but it can be expected to look and work similarly.

Update: EMUI 10 Beta available for the Honor 8X

Honor has opened up EMUI 10 beta testing for the Honor 8X, specifically for the 4GB + 64GB variant.

EMUI 10 Beta for the Honor 8X

Users who are interested in participating in the Beta need to download the Beta Tool (Friendly User Test), install it on their device, and join the Honor 8X beta project within the app. This will allow OTA updates for the Beta to be delivered on the device. There are limited spots within the project, so you can try your luck and check if they are still accepting applications for this beta test. Nonetheless, this does signal that the stable update can land soon on the Honor 8X.

Discord for Android 9.9.3 beta adds temporary muting, slash commands, and mark as unread

Discord is a popular IM client for online gaming communities. The service and its app allows users to create different servers for a dedicated umbrella topic, and then create different channels within the server for further topic bifurcation and keeping conversations organized according to their themes. Users can then talk to each other within these channels, and you can keep track of the expected conversation topics within the channel. Discord has been growing in popularity recently, adding in features like displaying game activity to friends, recommending new servers to join through the Discover feature, and packing in a hidden AMOLED dark theme. Now, the official Discord app on Android is adding in more new features, such as temporary muting, slash commands, and marking messages as unread.

Discord v9.9.3 beta is rolling out to users through the Google Play Store, with the changelog as pictured above. The update brings along some fixes in the form of contrast adjustments for the light theme, as well as some fixes for notifications. The highlight of the update, however, is the ability to temporarily mute certain conversations. This way, you can concentrate on more important topics if a particular conversation gets too chatty, and not have to remember to unmute it. A lot of users widely make use of temporary mute on other IMs, so Discord getting the feature should help you when your clan gets too annoying in the middle of a game.

Next, Discord for Android is also getting support for slash commands. Slash commands, starting with /, are commonly used to interact with bots. Some of the more widely used slash commands are /giphy and /tenor to search for GIFs, /tts to read the message to all users currently viewing the channel, /spoiler to mark messages as a spoiler, and /tableflip, /unflip, and /shrug to really get your point across. Or not, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The third new feature for the app is relatively minor, as it allows one to mark individual messages as unread. This can come in handy when you want to revisit certain conversations.

Discord v9.9.3 beta is rolling out to users through the Google Play Store presuming you have enrolled in the Beta program for the app. You can also sideload the update through APKMirror.

The article with download links for the Redmi Note 7 Pro and POCO F1 was originally published on October 30, 2019.

MIUI 11 is the newest big release for Xiaomi smartphones, perhaps even bigger than an Android version jump. Features on Xiaomi devices are dictated more by their MIUI versions than the underlying Android version, so an MIUI version upgrade is an exciting event. MIUI 11 was announced in China in September 2019, bringing along new features such as animated AOD and Horizon Light for supported devices, new font, dynamic sound system, Mi Work and Mi Go app suites, and more changes. The first batch of MIUI 11 Betas was available for a bunch of devices, and over the next few weeks, devices like the Redmi K20 have begun receiving their stable MIUI 11 updates. Now, Xiaomi has officially confirmed that stable MIUI 11 update is rolling out to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro, Redmi 7, Redmi Note 5 Pro and the Poco F1.

The update for the Redmi Note 7 and Poco F1 is rolling out to all devices in a staged manner, while Xiaomi should be making the announcement soon for the Redmi Y3, Redmi 7 and Redmi Note 5 Pro. You can wait for the update to land on the device. Or as an alternative, you can also sideload the update onto your phone using the download links provided below. Even though these are official update files, it is always a good idea to back up the important data on your phone.

You should be able to install the updates on your device by yourself using the local update method. Download the Recovery ROM for your region, place it in your root directory. Then navigate to Settings > About Phone > System Update and then tap on the MIUI icon 7 times. This should reveal the “Choose update package” option in the three-dot menu. Select the option, and then select the file you download and hit “OK”.

Here are some screenshots of the update from my Redmi Note 7 Pro:

MIUI 11 on the Redmi Note 7 Pro MIUI 11 on the Redmi Note 7 Pro MIUI 11 on the Redmi Note 7 Pro MIUI 11 on the Redmi Note 7 Pro MIUI 11 on the Redmi Note 7 Pro MIUI 11 on the Redmi Note 7 Pro MIUI 11 on the Redmi Note 7 Pro

Xiaomi’s MIUI 11 rollout has been difficult to track so far, mainly because of the confusing update naming convention and the different updates across multiple regions. Adding to this complexity is the fact there appears to be a very thin demarcation between builds that are only intended for the Mi Pilot beta testing program, meaning that builds assigned for this group will not install on devices with Mi Accounts that do not have the requisite permission. The same builds then get opened up as stable release, creating a lot of confusion — for instance, the same build linked above first failed to install on my Redmi Note 7 Pro, but then appeared through the OTA with the MIUI 11 Beta icon. If you get the error message that the update is for closed beta testers only, you can sideload the update through TWRP.

Google explains how the Pixel 4’s Astrophotography works and shares tips on how to take them

Even before Google launched the Pixel 4 series, its Astrophotography mode caught the attention of users worldwide. The new enhanced night-mode setting in the Google Camera app allowed users to capture amazing photos of the starry night sky. However, capturing photos like the ones you might have seen on social media isn’t as easy as it may seem. There are several parameters you need to keep in mind to capture a decent shot, which is why Google has now released some much-needed insight about the new feature.

In a recent blog post titled ‘Astrophotography with Night Sight on Pixel Phones’, Google’s Florian Kainz and Kiran Murthy explain how the new mode came about. The post talks about the company’s inner workings and reveals key details about how the engineers fixed the exposure times for each frame and the number of frames to capture to achieve the best results while avoiding any motion blur.

Then it sheds light on how the company tackled issues with Dark current, which causes CMOS image sensors to record incorrect signals that result in individual pixels lighting up even when they’re not exposed to as much light. To combat this issue, the company compared the values of neighboring pixels within the same frame and across the sequence of frames to look for outliers. It then eliminated these outliers by concealing it with the average value of its neighbors.

Left: A small region of a long-exposure image with hot pixels, and warm pixels caused by dark current nonuniformity. Right: The same image after outliers have been removed. Fine details in the landscape, including small points of light, are preserved.

Google then talks about scene composition and how they had to display a “post-shutter viewfinder” in Night Sight in order to help users see what they were shooting. Without this implementation, you’d mostly see a gray screen which makes composing the shot quite difficult. Autofocus was another issue that the company faced due to a similar reason and in order to resolve that it implemented “post-shutter autofocus”. This new feature captured two autofocus frames with exposure times up to one second to help detect image details even in low light. These frames helped the Pixel 4’s camera focus properly on the subject but didn’t contribute directly to the final image.

Left: The live Night Sight viewfinder in a very dark outdoor environment. Except for a few points of light from distant buildings, the landscape and the sky are largely invisible. Right: The post-shutter viewfinder during a long exposure shot. The image is much clearer; it updates after every long-exposure frame.

Finally, Google had to change how it processed the sky in Night Sight photos to deliver believable results. The processing not only helped make the sky look darker, as you’d expect it to look at night, but also added sky-specific noise reduction and selectively increased contrast to make certain features more prominent.

During the course of developing and testing Night Sight astrophotography, Google’s engineers also gained some experience taking outdoor night time pictures. And in order to help you capture better Night Sight photos with your Pixel device (or any phone with the GCam mod), the company has shared a list of tips and tricks. You can find the tips and tricks by following this link and improve the quality of your Night Sight astrophotography images significantly. You can follow the link below for more detailed info on how the Pixel 4’s astrophotography feature works.
