[Update: General availability] Microsoft’s Your Phone app now supports phone calls for more Android devices

Update (12/11/19 @ 5:00 PM ET): Microsoft has announced that Your Phone calling is now rolling out to everyone.

Microsoft has been pushing out updates to the Your Phone app recently and it’s become pretty great. Last month, Your Phone gained a battery indicator and prepared support for making phone calls. Now, in the latest Windows Insider build, that phone calling support is ready to roll out to more devices.

Calling with Your Phone was originally announced at Samsung Unpacked for the Galaxy Note 10 series. As mentioned above, Microsoft began preparing to support more devices last month. The latest update to Your Phone brings the calling support to any Android 7+ phone. You will also need a Windows 10 PC with Bluetooth, Windows 10 19H1 or newer, and a minimum of Windows 10 build 18362.356.

Your Phone calling allows you to answer, decline, and initiate calls on your PC. You can decline calls with custom text messages or send them directly to voicemail. Your Phone also shows your recent call history and you can seamlessly move an ongoing call from PC to phone.

Microsoft has built Your Phone into a very powerful app for Android users. In some ways, it has filled a gap in functionality that Google has yet to fill. Apple makes it super easy to sync with your iPhone on a Mac, but Google doesn’t have that. The Messages web client can be a pain to use and it doesn’t support phone calls. Check out Microsoft Your Phone if you’re a Windows user.

Update: General availability

After being tested with Windows Insiders and a limited number of phones, Your Phone calling is now rolling out to the general public. You will need a Windows 10 PC with Bluetooth and an Android phone with Android 7.0+ to use the feature. Make sure the Windows app and the Android app are both updated to the latest version. You may not see the update right away.

[Update: Review by DOJ] Google officially acquires Fitbit for $2.1 billion

Update (12/11/19 @ 2:40 ET): The US Justice Department will be reviewing Google’s acquisition of Fitbit for antitrust issues.

As was widely rumored earlier this week, Google is buying Fitbit. The company officially announced the acquisition on its blog this morning. The deal puts Fitbit under Google, not Alphabet, similar to how Nest is now organized. Google reportedly spent $2.1 billion on the fitness company.

People will immediately assume that this move is to bolster Wear OS, and it does seem like that’s the goal. Google SVP of devices and services Rick Osterloh said that the purchase is “an opportunity to invest even more in Wear OS as well as introduce Made by Google wearable devices into the market.” Google’s own fitness software is decent, but clearly behind Fitbit and Apple.

On the hardware side of things, Google has never released a smartwatch under the “Made by Google” brand. The company has worked on devices, but none of them have come to light. Fitbit has tons of experience pumping out hardware for millions of people. On both the software and hardware fronts, Fitbit has a lot to offer Google.

Of course, acquisitions shouldn’t necessarily be celebrated. Fitbit was a major player in the wearable market that wasn’t tied to one of the big tech companies. Now Apple and Google, the two big names in tech, own the most popular fitness platforms. Fitbit says it’s “health and wellness data will not be used for Google ads,” but naturally people will still be concerned.

If you’re only interested in Google products getting better, this is likely a good step for Wear OS and any Google-made wearable that comes down the line. Google has struggled immensely in this market and Fitbit could be a huge help. Only time will tell.

Update: Review by DOJ

Google and Fitbit announced a $2.1 billion acquisition early last month and not much has been said about it since then. It is now being reported that the US Department of Justice will be reviewing the acquisition for antitrust issues. Google, of course, has been under the microscope for antitrust issues in the past. The concerned organizations include Public Citizen and the Center for Digital Democracy. The FTC can also review mergers, but they did not opt to do so in this case. We weren’t going to see any of the fruits of this merger for quite some time anyway. This may just be a small hang-up or it could end up reversing the merger altogether. We will have to wait and see.

[Update: Pre-order now] A new Moto 360 is finally coming, but it’s not from Motorola

Update (12/11/19 @ 12:55 PM ET): The new (non-Motorola) Moto 360 smartwatch is available for pre-order now, shipping in January.

The original Moto 360 smartwatch was launched way back in 2014 and it was one of the very first devices with Android Wear. Of the few options at the time, the Moto 360 was widely considered the most attractive (despite the “flat tire” display). Motorola followed it up with a second-generation in 2015, but since then the company has dropped out of the wearable game. A new Moto 360 is finally coming, but not from where you’d expect.

Completely out of left field, a new Moto 360 has been announced and is launching in December. This device, however, is not being made by Motorola or Lenovo. A company called eBuyNow has licensed the Moto 360 brand from Motorola. It looks like what you might expect a third-generation Moto 360 to look like, but it really has no connection to the previous models.

The Moto 360 third-generation has the signature circular display like the original. It’s 1.2-inches, 360 x 360, and OLED. It’s powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 chip, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage. That puts it on the same playing field as the Fossil Gen 5. This is a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth-only smartwatch with GPS and NFC for mobile payments. The battery comes in at 355mAh.

Physically, the Moto 360 third-generation weighs 52g and has a 42mm body that takes 20mm bands. There are two buttons on the right side: the top rotates and the bottom can be customized. It will come in silver, gold, and black finishes. Each watch comes with two bands: leather and rubber. That’s good because this is a pretty expensive Wear OS device. You can pre-order the Moto 360 third-generation in November for $349 and it will ship in December.

What do you think of this new Moto 360? Is it as good as the original? Do you trust a relatively unknown company with this brand?

Update: Pre-order now

The new not-made-by-Motorola Moto 360 was announced in October and was supposed to go up for pre-order last month. That actually never happened, but it’s finally available for pre-order now from Moto360.com. The watch costs $349 and there are three color choices: Steel Grey, Rose Gold, and Phantom Black. Orders will begin shipping on January 10th, 2020.

BMW will finally offer Android Auto in 2020

Android Auto has slowly become a very popular offering in vehicles, but it wasn’t always that way. Back in 2017, one of the biggest car manufacturers didn’t have plans to offer Android Auto. Over 2 years later, BMW is now ready to integrate Android Auto in their vehicles, and they will start next year.

BMW announced today that they will start integrating Android Auto in cars in July of 2020. The news gets even better, though, as BMW will be using wireless Android Auto, which few automakers have adopted. As the name implies, wireless Android Auto doesn’t require your phone to be plugged in, making it substantially more convenient.

Android Auto will be included on all BMW vehicles equipped with the company’s iDrive 7.0 infotainment system and “Live Cockpit Professional” hardware. It should be available on all 2019/2020 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, and 8 Series sedans, as well as the newest X3, X5, X6, and X7 SUVs. The one downside to wireless Android Auto is it will only work with Pixel, Nexus, and Samsung phones.

Why the change of course? A BMW spokesperson said the company was committed to Apple CarPlay as a majority of its customers use iOS devices. However, BMW customers have “made it clear though that they would like to have Android Auto integration.” It’s nice to see a company listen to its customers.

Google announces Flutter 1.12 with support for web, macOS, and more

Google has been hard at work creating and expanding Flutter for the past few years. In case you think I’m talking about butterflies, Flutter is a cross-platform programming language. Its goal is to allow you to develop apps for any major platform with a single codebase. All you need to learn is Dart/JavaScript, and you can develop for Android, iOS, web, and desktop. This is no small feat, so it probably won’t surprise you when I say that Flutter, until now, has really only supported Android and iOS. Sure, that’s a lot of people for a target audience, but it doesn’t include everyone. Today, Google is announcing quite a few things, including expanded platform support.

First up is macOS support. While Flutter has actually technically supported macOS, Windows, and Linux for a while now, these libraries were basically in pre-alpha mode. APIs could change without notice, things might break, etc. Starting today, macOS is no longer in this pre-alpha stage. While it’s not quite stable yet, it should be safe to use for development. Continuing on the theme of platform support, Flutter Web is now in beta. Before, it was in a similar state to the desktop frameworks. Now, though, it should be stable enough to begin any pre-production work you might have had planned.

Unfortunately, that’s it for new platform support. Windows and Linux are still in very early development, and there’s no news on anything outside the Mobile OS Duopoly. Platform expansion isn’t the only thing that’s new, though.

Google has put a large focus on design with Flutter. The goal is to make it easier for designers and developers to work together, by improving the flow of integrating animations and graphics into apps. On that thread, Google is announcing a partnership with Adobe to bring Flutter integration to Adobe XD. With this integration, it’s possible to export a design from Adobe XD straight into a format that can be used inside a Flutter app.

Adobe XD to Flutter Plugin

The last thing to mention involves the language that Flutter uses: Dart. Dart now supports extension functions. Extension functions, in essence, allow you to add a method to a class without actually modifying the class. For more details, see this article on Dart Extension Methods Fundamentals.

That’s about it this time around. While this isn’t exactly an extensive list of new features, they’re all pretty major additions to Flutter and the development flow of using it. If you’ve been curious about trying out Flutter, but it wasn’t available in your preferred environment (and your preferred environment is macOS or web), now’s the time to get started.
