OxygenOS Open Beta 7 for the OnePlus 7 series brings new optimized charging and Chromatic reading mode

OnePlus runs three streams of software for its devices: Closed Beta, Open Beta, and the MP/official stable builds. As the name implies, the closed beta builds are available to only a closed group of testers, while the Open Beta extends pre-release software to a wider audience. This allows the OnePlus team to iron out any bugs and test out features with a wider audience, before rolling out changes to the stable release channel. After Open Beta 6, OnePlus is now rolling out OxygenOS Open Beta 7 for the OnePlus 7 series, bring over some new optimizations to charging, and changes to the reading mode.

Changelog for OxygenOS Open Beta 7 for OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro is as follows:

• System:
  • Added an optimized charging feature to improve battery performance based on usage (Settings – Battery – Optimized charging)
  • Optimized the RAM management
  • Fixed the issue with auto-record toast messages in the contact app
  • Fixed the wrong time format in the status bar
  • Improved system stability and general bug fixes
• Reading mode:
  • Added the Chromatic effect option to adapt color range and saturation intelligently for a better reading experience (Settings – Display – Reading mode – Turn on reading mode – Chromatic effect)

The update should be rolling out as an OTA in the next few days to users who are already running Open Beta 6 on the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro.

Samsung’s clamshell folding phone leaks in multiple live images

The Samsung Galaxy Fold is clearly one of the most fascinating and futuristic smartphones we saw this year. For this device, Samsung used the tradition book layout but for its next folding smartphone, the company might go for a more ergonomic design. Earlier this year at the Samsung Developer Conference, it teased different form factors for its next folding smartphone with potential options including a clamshell design similar to the recently resurrected Razr from Motorola. And now, we have come across some leaked hands-on images of what could be Samsung’s clamshell phone, hinting at Samsung’s likely design choices for this prospective vertically-folding smartphone.

There’s no formal Samsung branding on the smartphone which suggests it could possibly be a prototype. But the rounded frame and the shape of the speaker grille ascribe to the standard Samsung design language. Plus, the smartphone is running One UI in the Chinese language.

Design-wise, the phone opens up to look like a standard bar phone with volume buttons on the right. The display has a hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera. Unlike the standard Galaxy Fold or the Motorola Razr, there’s no color display on the outside. Here, a tiny monochrome screen near the bottom shows the time, the date, and the battery percentage. Beside this display is a dual-camera setup along with a flash. While the blogger who shared these images did not share any details about the cameras, another report in the past said that the Galaxy Fold 2 might feature a 108MP Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor and another module for 5X optical zoom. We cannot confirm this as of now.

If reports are to be believed, Samsung might unveil the next generation of the Galaxy Fold alongside Galaxy S11 series in February 2020 but we’re awaiting more details before we can join the dots and confirm that the Galaxy Fold 2 will, in fact, be this device. We hope to learn more in the coming weeks as we close in on the company’s major launch event in early 2020.

Google Podcasts gets a dark theme on Android

The new system-wide dark mode is arguably one of the most popular features in Android 10. The built-in dark mode completely transforms the UI and it also enables a dark theme in supported third-party apps. Several Google apps also come with support for the new dark theme and over the last couple of months the company has released dark mode support to even more apps. Apps like the Google Play Store, Gmail, Google Photos, Google Fit, Google Play Books, etc. have already received support for the new dark theme. And now, the Google Podcasts app is the latest to join the club.

Several users on Reddit have reported seeing a new dark mode in the latest release of Google Podcasts (v1.0.0.266384425). As with other Google apps, the new dark theme in Google Podcasts brings a complete refresh with everything from the homepage to the settings getting a dark background and light text. The player has also received a dark background with contrasty accents for the buttons and progress bar. However, the dark theme currently isn’t available to all users and I wasn’t able to trigger it on my Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro even with the latest update installed.

Some users in the Reddit thread suggest that the dark mode can only be enabled if you’re enrolled in the Google app beta program, while others claim that the dark mode was rolled out as part of a server-side update. While it isn’t exactly clear how the new dark mode can be enabled in Google Podcasts right now, it’s safe to assume that it should automatically roll out to all users over the next couple of days. [Update: More Mate Xs Details] Huawei launches the Mate X foldable smartphone in China, teases the Kirin 990 Mate Xs for 2020

Update (12/18/19 @ 5:10 PM ET): A newer version of the Huawei Mate X with a better hinge, more resistant screen, and the Kirin 990 will be shown off at MWC 2020.

Earlier this year in February, we first got our first look at Huawei’s foldable smartphone — the Huawei Mate X. Revealed shortly after the Samsung Galaxy Fold, Huawei’s next-gen device took a slightly different approach and wowed enthusiasts worldwide. However, following the Galaxy Fold fiasco, Huawei has delayed its launch a fair few times. The device has even received some design changes in the past few months and the company has even upgraded its specifications since the original announcement. Now, it seems like the Huawei Mate X is finally ready for prime time, as it has officially been launched in China.

As reported by GSMArena, the Mate X was launched at a recent event in Shenzhen, China alongside the Mate 30 5G and the Mate 30 Pro 5G. The device has been priced at 16,999 Yuan (~$2,400) and is expected to hit the shelves on November 15. At the event, the company also announced the Mate Xs — a slightly upgraded version of the Mate X. While the Mate Xs seems to be identical to the regular Mate X on the outside, it features Huawei’s new flagship Kirin 990 5G SoC.

The newer and more powerful chipset from the company is built on the 7nm+ EUV process. The chip comes with an integrated 5G modem, as opposed to the external one used in the original Mate X. The chipset also packs in a more powerful NPU, in addition to overclocked Cortex A76 and A55 cores. While the Mali-G76 GPU remains the same as the Kirin 980, it now has six more cores, resulting in a total of 16 cores.

If you’re interested in purchasing the newer Huawei Mate Xs though, you’ll have to wait quite a while as Huawei has scheduled its launch for March 2020. It’s also worth noting that other than its chipset, we have no further information on the specifications of the Mate Xs, but we expect to learn more over the next couple of months.

Update: More Mate Xs Details

Speaking to the French press, Richard Yu announced that there will be an updated Huawei Mate X with a better hinge, a more durable screen, and the Kirin 990 SoC. He also mentioned that it will be shown off at Mobile World Congress in February. Yu also talked about a European release and that they would like to launch it in the first quarter of 2020. Yu did not specifically mention the name of the device, so it’s possible he was talking about the Mate Xs that was teased back in October. The original Mate X never launched internationally like Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, but it looks like its successor might be.

[Update 4: No Going Back] Android Auto is getting a big redesign with simplified controls and dark theme

Update 4 (12/18/19 @ 4:55 PM ET): The new Android Auto redesign is now enabled for everyone and it can’t be turned off.

Update 3 (7/30/19 @ 12:25 PM ET): Google has confirmed the big Android Auto redesign is rolling out over the next few weeks.

Update 2 (6/26/19 @ 9:40 AM ET): Not so fast. Google has explicitly stated, “The Android Auto update has not yet been rolled out to users.”

Update 1 (6/25/19 @ 3:43 PM ET): Android Auto’s redesign with the dark theme has begun rolling out.

Google’s I/O 2019 developer conference is officially kicking up tomorrow, but that doesn’t mean announcements aren’t already rolling in. While all of our eyes will be on Android Q and Google’s upcoming midrange smartphones, the Pixel 3a and the Pixel 3a XL, Google will also be taking some time to announce improvements/polishments to some of their current services, and maybe even announce some new services. One of the Google services that will be receiving a much-needed polishment is Android Auto, the automobile-focused interface of Android, which is receiving a facelift in an attempt to improve user experience.

The new Android Auto interface is loosely based on Google’s new Material Theme guidelines rather than the older Material Design UI elements. With “loosely” being the keyword here: while design elements like outlined icons and Google’s Google Sans font are present in the redesigned Android Auto, they’re not as predominant as in other Google apps or the main Android interface. Instead, the new Android Auto redesign focuses on improving other elements, introducing things such as a reworked navigation bar, a dark theme to avoid eye strain on the road, a maximized display, a reworked notification center, and more.

The new navigation bar keeps things simple, showing contextual bubbles such as directions and music controls while you’re in other apps so you’re aware of everything at all times. It also brings a new, user-friendly app drawer more similar to what you’d find on your phone, and the new notification center shows all of your notifications at a glance. Everything is tied together under a dark theme, in line with Google’s new Material guidelines.

This redesigned Android Auto design won’t be immediately available, though. Google says you should be expecting this update to come to your car—or your phone, if you use it on your phone—sometime later this summer. Google I/O attendants will be able to try it out earlier, though.

Update 1: Rolling out

One Reddit user has reportedly received Android Auto’s big redesign. The new look, which includes a dark theme, appears to arrive via a server-side switch. Updating to the latest Android Auto APK doesn’t automatically bring the redesign. Let us know if you see the fresh look in your car!

Update 2: Not rolling out yet

A Google spokesperson told Android Police that: “The Android Auto update has not yet been rolled out to users.” The update is still on track to roll out sometime this Summer. It’s possible that the Reddit user was sent the update by mistake (which has been known to happen from time to time). No one else in the Reddit thread received the update. We will continue to patiently wait for the official roll out.

Update 3: Officially Rolling Out

Google has published a blog post to announce the roll-out of the Android Auto redesign. This was shown off back at Google I/O in May, but we’ve been waiting for the actual update to arrive. Earlier today, several users on Reddit started reporting that they received the redesign and now Google has confirmed it.

One of the features that wasn’t mentioned at Google I/O is Google Assistant badges. You’ll see these small Assistant icons on apps in the launcher. Tapping the icon will prompt Assistant to tell you about things related to that app, such as calendar events, weather, and reminders. Google says users will start to see the new design in the “next few weeks,” so stay tuned.

Update 4: No Going Back

Top toggle is now gone

The new Android Auto redesign is now enabled for all users. Google was allowing people to opt-in or revert the redesign within the Android Auto app by toggling “Try the new Android Auto.” However, the new look is now enabled by default and we can confirm that toggle is no longer available. For better or worse, this is now the permanent look of Android Auto.

[Update: OxygenOS 10.3.0] Android 10 rolls out again for the OnePlus 6/6T

Update (12/18/19 @ 4:40 PM ET): Android 10 is rolling out again for the OnePlus 6/6T via OxygenOS 10.3.0.

At the OnePlus 7T Pro launch event earlier this year in October, the company announced the Android 10 rollout schedule for older devices. In keeping with the schedule, the company rolled out a stable Android 10 update for the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T in the first week of November. However, due to some unforeseen bugs in the builds OnePlus temporarily halted the rollout. OnePlus seems to have fixed all the issues in the previous release as it has now started rolling out OxygenOS 10.0.1 based on Android 10 for the OnePlus 6/6T.

The update upgrades the system to Android 10 and introduces a brand new UI redesign that we’ve previously seen on the OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro. The build also includes some new OxygenOS-specific features like keyword blocking in the OnePlus Messages app and the contextual display feature. Here’s the official changelog for the latest update for the OnePlus 6/6T:

Update: OxygenOS 10.3.0

Oxygen OS 10 based on Android 10 first started to roll out to the OnePlus 6/6T back in early November. The update was halted due to bugs, but it started rolling out again earlier this month (above). It actually got halted again because of bugs, but it appears to be rolling out (for real) now. OxygenOS 10.3.0 adds the November 2019 security patches and the notch hiding feature that wasn’t available for stable but were recently added in Open Beta 3. Let’s hope it stays this time.

[Update: Fixed] Google Play Store is reportedly failing to show newly published apps in search

Update (12/18/19 @ 4:15 PM ET): Google fixes Play Store bug that prevented newly published apps from showing in search results.

Over the last couple of months, Google has introduced several new features for the Play Store. The Play Store has recently received a new dark theme on Android 10, one-tap buttons to unsubscribe from betas, clear wishlists, etc., and we’ve even seen hints of an upcoming incognito mode. But while Google may be hard at work on these new features, there’s a major bug on the Google Play Store that remains unaddressed. The bug in question affects the search functionality of the Play Store and doesn’t bring up recently added apps, even when you use the right keywords.

According to a recent report from Android Authority, the bug prevents you from finding certain apps and games on the Google Play Store. These apps, which are definitely live, don’t show up in the search results even when you type out the entire name. For instance, searching for the game ‘Deliver The Duck’ only brings up related results and doesn’t bring up the game itself. The game doesn’t show up even if you search with the full title ‘Deliver The Duck Water Game’. However, the game does show up if you search for ‘Deliver_The_Duck’.

The bug has been reported by several big-name developers both on Google Play Help forums and on the Google Issue Tracker. As of now, it isn’t quite clear what the problem is in this situation, but it seems like Google might be hiding these search results for some reason. However, the fact that you can find the apps by slightly altering the search keyword leads us to believe that the issue might be a result of some recent changes to the search algorithm. While Google hasn’t released an official statement regarding the matter, a comment on the Issue Tracker reveals that the issue has already been escalated to the development team. We’ll update this post as and when Google releases a statement regarding the matter.

Update: Fixed

Earlier this month, a bug in the Play Store was preventing newly published app from showing in search results. According to comments on the Issue Tracker threads and Support forums, it looks like Google has resolved the problem. Most developers are reporting that it’s fixed. That’s great news as search results play a huge part in how many people can find an app.
