Google Chrome for Android is testing a custom share sheet in Canary

In a bid to making sharing webpages a simpler and more straightforward process, Google is testing a new share UI for Chrome on Android. The new UI is currently available as a flag in the latest Chrome Canary release and it gives you the option to share webpages using a QR code, by copying the link, or just by sending them over to your other device. Along with these three options, the new share UI has a “more” button that opens up the system share sheet. The new UI replaces the current Android share UI that pops up when you tap on the Share button in the menu.

As reported by Techdows, you can enable this new share UI by first updating to Chrome Canary version 81.0.4005.0 or higher. Then, you’ll have to visit the chrome://flags page on the updated browser and search for the “Chrome Sharing Hub” flag. Select enable from the drop-down menu below the flag and then relaunch the browser to enable the new UI. In case you’re not able to relaunch Canary successfully, you’ll have to head over to the Chrome Canary app info page and force stop the app. After that, when you launch the app again you’ll be able to access the new share UI.

In the current build of Chrome Canary, the QR code button in the new UI doesn’t generate a QR code but the other two options work just as expected. The report also reveals that Google might even add a screenshot feature in the share UI, but we currently have no confirmation regarding the same. Since this new UI is still limited to Chrome Canary, it will be quite a while before Google releases it on the stable version of the browser.

OnePlus looks to open 100 new Experience Stores in 50 cities in India

Over the last couple of years, OnePlus has solidified its position in India as a premium smartphone manufacturer. Ever since the launch of the OnePlus 3, the company has created a solid fan base in the country, delivering one amazing phone after another. The company has also introduced a few India-specific features in OxygenOS to appeal to its Indian fans and it has even worked on increasing its offline presence in the country by partnering with large retail chains like Reliance Digital and launching its own line of OnePlus Experience stores. Most recently, the company offered 1 year of free extended warranty, upgrade plans and more for users in India and now, the company is planning on increasing its offline footprint with even more Experience stores.

According to a recent report from Business Insider, OnePlus has partnered with SRK Group to open 100 new OnePlus Experience Stores across 50 cities in the country. In a statement regarding the partnership, OnePlus India’s Head of General Trade and Modern Trade Siddharth Deshmukh said, “As India continues to be a significant market for us, we look to partner with the best of market players who share a similar futuristic vision like us to bring top-notch international quality of service to our customers. Mumbai continues to serve as a significant city with a thriving OnePlus community. Therefore, we are excited to partner with SRK Group in an effort to bring the best of our premium product experience to our offline based customers in the city.”

This new partnership with SRK Group falls in line with the company’s increased focus on expanding its offline presence in India. Thanks to the partnership, customers will now be able to purchase OnePlus devices across several retail stores throughout Mumbai, where SRK Group has been a prominent distributor for decades. As far as the OnePlus Experience stores are concerned, the company aims to open 100 new stores by the end of next year, with a special focus on Tier-II cities. As of now, OnePlus is present in over 2000 offline retail stores, including partner stores, across the country.

Samsung confirms a new 5G Galaxy Tab S6 is coming in an official promotion

5G has been a big topic in 2019 and we’re starting to see a sizeable number of phones support it. One thing we haven’t seen much talk about is 5G tablets. There have been rumblings of Samsung releasing a 5G variant of the Galaxy Tab S6 and an official support page now confirms its existence.

The support page itself is in Korean and doesn’t have much information. It simply shows the model number of SM-T866N and likely means the device will be coming soon. The more exciting bit of news is some promotional material from Samsung that explicitly mentions the Galaxy Tab S6 5G.

The promotion is from Korea and it features three tech bundles of products. You can obtain these bundles with the purchases of a few devices, one being the Galaxy Tab S6 5G. It’s listed on the promotion as “coming soon.” Since the promo only lasts until March 30, 2020, it’s safe to say the tablet will launch well before that.

We don’t have any information on the specifications of the 5G variant, but Samsung is using the exact same renders as the original Tab S6. That means it’s probably the same device, just with 5G connectivity support. Pricing will likely be more expensive as well.

Google Translate is preparing to add flashcards to your phrasebook to help you learn a new language

Learning a new language can be daunting, but thanks to the digital age, it’s now easier than ever. While nothing beats classic learning methods and actually immersing yourself in a new language, apps like Duolingo help hone your skills in your free time. Learning a new language is, however, not as essential as it used to be, as apps like Google Translate help you with understanding another language, either spoken out loud or written. Some people also use it as a complementary tool to learn a new language, and thanks to the app’s phrasebook feature, you can save phrases you use constantly so you can check them out later on.

This feature will be improved even further with the addition of a flashcards feature. This feature will allow you to display your saved phrases in the form of cards, which you can flip around to see the translation. The feature also allows you to shuffle the cards in order to randomize them and make it more of a fun exercise if you have many saved phrases.

The feature was first spotted by Jane Manchun Wong some days back, but as of the time of writing, the feature has not yet rolled out to consumers, so it may be a while before we see it come to the stable version of the app.

This could make the app a fun complementary tool, in a similar fashion to Duolingo, to learning a new language by helping you memorize your phrasebook. It is still a far cry from something like Duolingo, which gives you short exercises to flex your muscles in whatever language you’re learning, and even then it’s just a new visual aspect for the already existing phrasebook, but it does make it a little fun, especially with the shuffling aspect. Furthermore, it could potentially open the gateway towards making Google Translate more of a useful tool for learners in the longer run.

[Update: Can be disabled] Google Play Store will start autoplaying store listing videos next month

Update (12/23/19 @ 10:45 ET): The Play Store now allows you to disable autoplaying videos.

There’s one thing on the internet that everyone seems to agree on: autoplaying videos are annoying. Unfortunately, that hasn’t stopped websites from continuing to use them. To the lament of many, Google Play will soon start autoplaying videos on app/game listings that include promotional videos.

According to the Google Play Console Help, autoplaying videos are coming next month. Found in the Promo Video section on the “Graphic assets, screenshots, & video” page, Google says “beginning September 2019, Google Play will start autoplaying store listing videos to help more users discover your content at a glance.”

One side effect of this move is ads being played before videos. Google doesn’t want promo videos to have ads in front of them, which they say could be confusing for users. So they are asking developers to turn off monetization for the promo videos featured on the listing pages. Developers must do this by November 1st, 2019 to keep the video eligible. In other words, promo videos with ads will not be shown on Google Play.

This move will likely be annoying to some users, but it should be easy to ignore. We hope Google has an option to disable autoplaying videos, at least when on mobile connections. We assume that the autoplaying videos will act like they do on other platforms, playing silently unless the user decides to turn on volume. The Play Store recently started autoplaying store listing videos, but there was no option to disable this behavior. These autoplaying videos primarily reside in the Games tab and they can be annoying to some users. Thankfully, Google is finally adding options to control when the videos automatically play. You get options to have them play all the time, only on Wi-Fi, and never. You can find these options in the Settings of the Play Store under “General” with version 17.9.17.

Realme X2 kernel source code is now available

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Realme has seen tremendous growth around the world since its debut back in May 2018.
