POCO X2 with 120Hz display, Snapdragon 730G launches in India at ₹15,999 ($225)

POCO started off as an independent sub-brand of Chinese OEM Xiaomi back in August 2018. With the launch of its first smartphone — the POCO F1 — the brand had a promising start. However, despite the popularity of its budget-friendly flagship-spec device, POCO didn’t launch another device for quite a while. Fans wondered whether the brand was just a one-hit-wonder and if Xiaomi had any further plans for it. After over a year-long lull, POCO came back strong earlier this year with a staged rollout of Android 10 for the POCO F1 and an announcement that POCO would become an independent brand. Following that, the company started posting teasers on social media for a “Season 2” and confirmed that a new device was in the works. Now, after a month’s worth of teasers and leaks, POCO has finally launched the POCO X2 in India.

Much like Xiaomi, POCO officially announced several key details about the POCO X2 in the days leading up to the launch. The company had previously revealed that the device would feature a 120Hz high refresh rate display, liquid cooling technology, and it also hinted at a Sony IMX 686 primary sensor. And if you’ve been keeping up with our coverage of the device, you’d already know that we had reason to believe that the POCO X2 is nothing but a rebranded Redmi K30 4G. Now, with the launch of the POCO X2, the company has confirmed that the device is indeed a Redmi K30 4G in disguise.

Just like the Redmi K30 4G, the POCO X2 features a 6.67-inch FHD+ LCD dual-punch hole display with a 120Hz refresh rate, two selfie shooters within the hole punch in the display, Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection and HDR 10 support. The back panel looks exactly the same, with the exception of the branding. As you can see in the spec sheet above, there is absolutely no difference when it comes to the hardware on the POCO X2 and the Redmi K30 4G. It packs in the same Snapdragon 730G SoC, it features the same RAM/storage SKUs, and the same quad-camera setup. There’s a 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor, with an f/1.9 aperture and 1/1.7″ sensor size, an 8MP f/2.2 120-degree wide-angle camera, a 2MP f/2.4 depth sensor, and a 2MP f/2.4 macro camera.

What’s different, however, is that POCO is promising day-zero kernel source code availability, which could make the POCO X2 a hit among custom ROM developers and power users. But much like the POCO F1, the X2 will also have a 72-hour bootloader unlock wait before users can install any custom software on their units.

Pricing and Availability

The POCO X2 will go on sale on 11th February at 12PM  through Flipkart. The device will be available in 3 color variants — Atlantis Blue, Phoenix Red, and Matrix Purple — and three RAM/storage variants — 6GB/64GB, 6GB/128GB, and 8GB/256GB. The POCO X2 will be available at a starting price of ₹15,999 ($225) for the 6GB/64GB variant, going all the way up to ₹18,999(~$267) for the 8GB/256GB variant. Buyers who use an ICICI Debit/Credit card to purchase the device will also get an additional discount of ₹1,000. It’s also worth noting that POCO is now limited to the Indian market until further notice, so the POCO X2 won’t be coming to other regions anytime soon.

5-year old Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch is getting an update

When smartphones struggle to get updates after a few months of usage, it may be a surprise to learn that the Samsung Gear S2 is getting a surprise update that aims to improve battery life. The Samsung Gear S2 is a near-5-year-old smartwatch that came out in October 2015, just a few months after the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. Version R730AUCU3CQK1 is rolling out for the Samsung Gear S2, and it clocks in at a measly 6.79MB.

samsung gear s2

Currently, there’s no real way of telling when the update will reach your watch. While the typical way for companies to roll out updates is slowly over time, this update is nothing short of an abnormality (even if it’s much appreciated). You can check for an update by going to your Galaxy Wearable app, going to “Watch software update,” and then tapping “Download and install” if the option is available. Samsung did port the Watch Active 2’s features to older smartwatches back in November, but this seems to be a simple firmware update.

An update for the Samsung Gear S2 is a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. With devices reaching many years of age at this stage, owners will begin to feel battery deterioration, and a battery life improvement may serve to extend its longevity just a little bit more. Have you gotten the update? Let us know in the comments!

TCL will stop selling BlackBerry-branded phones in August

Despite the reputation carried by the “BlackBerry” name, the company has struggled to break out and succeed in the modern smartphone market. In 2016, BlackBerry opted instead to license out their name, letting other device manufacturers design the smartphones whilst reaping the benefits of the respected brand. TCL Communications took up the mantle on this one, though even still, their devices failed to attain commercial success. This isn’t an uncommon arrangement – TCL also sells devices under the Alcatel branding and HMD Global does it with the Nokia branding. That arrangement between the two companies is set to end though, as, in August 2020, TCL will stop selling BlackBerry-branded smartphones.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that support will end for any BlackBerry devices that you may have recently purchased. They will continue to provide support (including customer service and warranty) until the 31st of August 2022. They will also provide it for longer if a region legally requires it to. TCL first announced its partnership with BlackBerry in December 2016, describing it as “long-term.” TCL was responsible for the design and manufacturing of the BlackBerry KEYone, Motion, KEY2, and KEY2 LE. While TCL provided the hardware and the designs, the “critical security and software features provided by BlackBerry Limited […] ensure these were genuine BlackBerry devices.” These devices were very much a joint effort, even if the BlackBerry brand appeared to stagnate as time went on.

In the wake of the news, TCL Communications may instead turn focus towards its own smartphone division. The TCL Plex launched at IFA in Berlin back in September, and it was the first TCL-branded smartphone. While it’s impossible to gauge its sales, it seemed like a solid first device for the company to launch. We’ll be keeping a close eye on TCL in the future, especially if this means more time for their own-branded smartphones.

Motorola releases kernel sources for the One Power and One Hyper’s Android 10 release

Motorola recently expanded its Moto One lineup with the launch of the Moto One Hyper. The new mid-range smartphone from the Lenovo-owned company offers impressive specifications at an affordable price point. Although admittedly a little late to the trend, it also marks the first phone from Motorola to feature a pop-up selfie camera. The device packs a 6.5-inch display, Snapdragon 675 SoC, dual rear cameras consisting of a 64MP primary and 8MP Ultra-wide sensors, 32MP front pop-up camera, and 4,000mAh battery with 45W fast charging support.

The device came running Android 10 out-of-the-box, however, the kernel source code for the same wasn’t being made available up until now. That changes today as Motorola has finally released Android 10 kernel sources for the Moto One Hyper on their Github page.

Moto One Hyper Kernel Sources

Alongside the Moto One Hyper, Motorola has also released the updated kernel source code for the Moto One Power. The Moto One Hyper was launched with Android 8.1 Oreo back in August of 2018. It was subsequently updated to Android 9.0 Pie and received its final update in the form of Android 10 two months ago.

You can check out the kernel source code for Moto One Power’s Android 10 release at the link given below.

Moto One Power Kernel Sources

The release of the kernel source code should help jump-start the development of custom kernels and ROMs for both devices. In fact, Moto One Hyper owners with an unlocked bootloader can try out an unofficial port of OmniROM right now thanks to XDA Recognized Developer.

Keep an eye out on the XDA‌ forum of your respective device to stay up to date with the latest developments.

The Best Smartwatch for fitness – The HONOR MagicWatch 2 [Update: Video]

The HONOR MagicWatch 2 improves on many of the features from the original MagicWach. It’s a polished and simple smartwatch with a clear goal- to be the best fitness companion for its users. So many of its features are designed specifically to enhance your workout routine and be a digital personal trainer. This is not your standard smartwatch and it does just about everything a little bit better than the competition.

15 Goal-Based Fitness Modes

Some of the features included in the HONOR MagicWatch 2 are 15 different goal-based fitness modes. These modes cover a huge selection of outdoor and indoor activities, with unique monitoring systems for each one.

The included workout modes are:

  • Outdoor run
  • Indoor run
  • Outdoor walk
  • Indoor walk
  • Outdoor cycle
  • Indoor cycle
  • Pool swim
  • Open water
  • Climb
  • Hike
  • Trail run
  • Triathlon
  • Elliptical
  • Rower
  • Other

Any of the workouts that include moving around outside, take advantage of the dual GPS connectivity integrated into the watch. This results in accurately tracked workouts when your running or biking. The HUAWEI Health app keeps track of all of your outdoor workout GPS data so you can go back and review your activities in Google Maps. The inclusion of dual-GPS also improves the tracking of your speed and altitude. A single GPS can have trouble accurately tracking these data points, which makes the HONOR MagicWatch 2 a better solution for tracking your workouts.

Since the watch is water resistant up to 50 meters, you can track your various swimming workouts as well. There are workout modes for both pool and open water swimming. HUAWEI has developed “TruSeen 3.5” which is a feature that helps you better understand your swim performance. This is done by accurately measuring your heart rate including SWOLF, distance, calories, and speed. For swimming activities, the HONOR MagicWatch 2 is a fantastic companion.

13 Running Courses

To make your runs more interesting, HONOR has included 13 different running courses in the MagicWatch 2. These different courses will help train you to improve your endurance, distance, speed ect. This is done by monitoring and adjusting your running based on the course you’ve chosen. Not only does it help you improve your fitness, but it just makes your workout a lot more fun.
