Google’s Automatic Call Screen feature is now available on all Pixel phones

Call Screen is a feature that was introduced on the Pixel 3 back in 2018. It essentially allows Google Assistant to act as your literal real-world assistant, taking the call for you and asking questions on your behalf. Late last year, Google rolled out Automatic Call Screen to the Pixel 4, and now it’s available on all Google Pixel devices.

As the name implies, Automatic Call Screen is the same great Call Screen feature, but it works automatically. Google will identify an unknown caller or a robocall and automatically screen the call before it rings your phone. If it turns out the call was not a robocall, your phone will ring a few moments later with some context about the call displayed on the screen. If a call is successfully screened automatically, you’ll see a transcript in the Dialer app.

Google mentioned that this feature would eventually come to all Pixel devices. It started appearing on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 2 this week, and now Google has announced it will be coming to everyone. That includes the original Pixel and the Pixel 3a series. We don’t know the exact rollout schedule, but as mentioned, it does appear to be arriving on devices now. Also, this is most likely still region-restricted to the US. You can find it in the Dialer app Settings under “Spam and Call Screen.” Google has set up a nice step-by-step guide here for enabling Automatic Call Screen.

Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Huawei are reportedly teaming up to provide a Google Play Store alternative

Chinese smartphone brands have become a gigantic phenomenon in recent years. Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Huawei are now some of the biggest smartphone brands in terms of raw shipments and sales, with all four brands accounting for over 40% of all smartphone shipments globally. And their presence in the Asian, European, and South American continents have risen to all-time highs. But these companies are, for the most part, forced to bend the knee to Google whenever possible as the Google Play Store and Google Mobile Services are essential parts of the Android experience. It seems, however, that these brands are now seeking some independence from Google as they are working together on an “app store alliance” of sorts.

Reuters’ report on this matter talks about a “Global Developer Service Alliance” or GDSA, where developers will be able to upload an app simultaneously on these brands’ respective app stores. While the report doesn’t immediately talk about a single Play Store alternative, all 4 app stores having the same content and backend would essentially make them the same app store. These 4 brands already have their own app stores up and running, as devices launched in mainland China don’t have Google Play Services, so this move would simply unify them. This move may have been fueled by Huawei’s US sanctions: the company is banned from doing business with US companies and therefore they can’t use Google services at all, forcing them to seek alternatives.,

As we said before, all of these companies are huge by their own right, so having them join forces could potentially mean trouble for Google’s grip on Android in overseas markets. Oppo and Vivo are both owned by BBK Electronics, which also owns OnePlus and Realme–the report doesn’t say whether these 2 brands would be joining the alliance, with OnePlus strengthening their US carrier presence and Realme putting heat under Xiaomi’s feet in India.

Bliss OS, a custom Android build for x86 PCs, gets updated with more fixes for Android 10

After releasing their first experimental Android 10 build in November, Team Bliss has now released a new Android 10 beta of Bliss OS for x86 PCs. This new build, called Yantra, is a separate version of Bliss OS. Unlike the standard Bliss OS builds, which are strictly based on AOSP with a touch of Pixel additions, Yantra includes commits from many popular ROMs such as LineageOS, Paranoid Android, Omni, and more.

The Bliss OS Yantra v12.2 brings tons of improvements and new features. Some of the notable changes include:

  • Added more fixes for sleep. Sleep from the power menu is currently missing. Access it using Ctrl+Alt+Del or the three-dot menu from Taskbar.
  • Added sleep options like double-tap to sleep from statusbar or lockscreen
  • Added Blissify app for customizations
  • Generic Kernel updates for the “kernel-4.19” build
  • Fixes for sound and volume on many devices
  • dkSome upstream updates from Android-x86 project’s q-x86 branch

The update fixes some of the compatibility issues users were facing when trying to run universal apps —apps that support multiple CPU architectures— in the previous alpha releases. On the Yantra v12.2, universal apps should work just fine however you won’t be able to run native ARM apps.

The team notes that the default Android 10 navigation gestures don’t work properly and may crash on some devices. To address this issue, future releases will come preloaded with XDA’s Navigation Gesture app to provide users with an alternative option.

If you’re interested in trying out Android on your PC and learn more about the project, head over to the Bliss OS x86 development thread from the link below. Keep in mind that installing Android on a PC is not as straightforward as flashing a ROM on your phone. Make sure to do your research and carefully read through the installation instructions before getting your hands dirty.

Garmin Vivomove series of hybrid smartwatches launched in India

Smartwatches can be broadly divided into two different categories — the first being smartwatches that aim to cram in enough processing power and features to make them comparable to a smartphone on a wrist, like the Apple Watch and the Samsung Galaxy Watch series; and the other being watches that add just enough smarts to complement the functionality of your phone rather than be its replacement, like the Amazfit GTR and Amazfit GTS. Within the second category, we have a further bifurcation coming in the form of hybrid smartwatches — watches that have mechanical hands and an analog dial along with a digital display underneath, like the Fossil Hybrid HR. Garmin hosted a launch event in Mumbai to launch the next set of releases in the Garmin Vivomove series of hybrid smartwatches, in India.

The new Garmin Vivomove series comprises of the Vivomove 3 and 3S, Vivomove Style, and Vivomove Luxe. The basic premise behind these smartwatches is their hybrid functionality. You get a similar design across the four variants — an analog dial and mechanical watch faces adorn the main watch unit, with no hints of a display anywhere in sight. Double tapping the watch reveals the hidden display. The 3 and 3S get a single monochrome OLED display on the bottom half, while the Style and Luxe get two separate pieces of rectangular color AMOLED displays on the top and bottom half of the watch. The double displays are an upgrade over the singular display on the Vivomove HR that already existed in the company’s lineup in India, though the 3/3S are upgrades in other specifications.

Garmin India did not disclose exact specifications for battery capacity.

The watches charge with a proprietary connector cable, which in my opinion, juts out quite awkwardly. Garmin could have used a magnetic charger stand setup, which would have been more convenient.

Much like the Fossil Hybrid HR, the watch hands move out of the way when you have incoming notifications. But unlike the Fossil, the Vivomove Style and Luxe also use the watch hands as an indicator for certain scenarios.

For the Garmin Vivomove series, the pricing may appear to be on the higher side if you look at it purely as a piece of technology. However, watches are also fashion statements and luxury items, so the pricing on these also takes into account the build quality and materials involved, as well as the very fact that they are to be considered a luxury product. There are a wide variety of colors available across the variants, and the straps are also easily replaceable — so if you can afford an indulgent purchase, you are sure to find the combination that suits you.

Buy from Amazon.in: Garmin Vivomove 3 || 3S || Style || Luxe

The new Garmin Vivomove series can be purchased from Amazon.in, Paytm Mall, and Garminstore.in. You can also purchase the watch through offline stores, a list of which is present here.

What are your thoughts on the Garmin Vivomove 3, Garmin Vivomove 3S, Garmin Vivomove Style, and Garmin Vivomove Luxe? Let us know in the comments below!

OnePlus TV update adds Spotify, MX Player, Voot and other content integrations

OnePlus has steadily evolved from a maker of flagship killers to a premium smartphone brand. The company recently took the top spot in the premium smartphone segment in India, surpassing Korean rival Samsung. The success of its smartphone lineup has given OnePlus the opportunity to add more products to its portfolio. Late last year, alongside the launch of the OnePlus 7T (review), the company also unveiled its first Android-powered QLED 4K TV. During our review, we found the OnePlus TV to be a great premium offering in the Android TV space. And the TV has since improved even further thanks to constant feature updates from OnePlus.

Soon after the launch of the TV, OnePlus rolled out an update with new lighting effects for the soundbar. Then, late last year in December, OnePlus rolled out another update bringing Netflix support to the TV, along with a new remote. OPPO will launch the Find X2 with Sony’s new image sensor and the Snapdragon 865 at MWC 2020

With MWC 2020 set to kick off in Barcelona, there’s a whole lot of new and exciting devices to look forward to. One of the big smartphone brands slated to be at the conference is OPPO, and we heavily expected that they would launch a new flagship smartphone at the event since confirming a launch for Q1 of 2020. OPPO has now confirmed that it will launch the OPPO Find X2 on February 22nd in Barcelona, a few days before the official start of the event.

While there’s not a huge amount of confirmed information about the OPPO Find X2 just yet, we know that it (and a mysterious Pro model) recently passed by the NBTC. None of its specs were revealed, though well-known leaker Ice Universe has suggested that the device will sport a 120Hz 1440p AMOLED panel and 65-watt SuperVOOC charging.

We also know that it’ll pack a new image sensor from Sony. The new Sony image sensor has a new 2×2 On-Chip Lens Solution, which brings a new “All Pixel omni-directional PDAF” technology. This technology improves the overall focus performance by the microlens structure, and the basement layout of the image sensor makes it so that the focus performance does not depend on the object shape or pattern, enabling high-speed auto-focus using phase differences in every situation. Couple that with the company’s multi-year partnership with Pixelworks for higher-quality display technology, and you’ve got a recipe for an excellent mobile content platform. The Iris 5 Visual has a few cool features such as the ability to playback video in higher refresh rates using MEMC (Motion Estimation and Motion Compensation) or to dynamically adjust the brightness and tone of the display to match the ambient lighting.

Finally, the OPPO Find X2 will feature the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, making it one of the first devices of the year to have it. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 is the latest chipset from Qualcomm and was announced at the start of December in 2019. The OPPO Find X2 is shaping up to be an exciting smartphone despite the silence surrounding the finer details, and we’re looking forward to its announcement.

Google Maps gets a new icon and new features on its 15th birthday

It’s hard to believe it, but Google Maps has now turned 15 years old. The service was launched all the way back in February 2005, at a time when Android was not owned by Google, at a time when the touchscreen smartphone era hadn’t arrived. In the years since, Google has upgraded its capabilities to such an extent that it is generally held to be the best free mapping service. Competitors such as HERE Maps, Apple Maps, TomTom, OpenStreetMap, and others come close in certain aspects, but Maps is the most well-rounded package. It comes with turn-by-turn navigation, Street View, places, and much more. Being a pre-loaded app on all Android smartphones means that Maps has become ubiquitous in the lives of consumers as more than one billion people use it, according to Google. To celebrate its 15th birthday, the company is updating Maps with a new look and multiple new features.

Google MapsStarting today, the updated Google Maps app for Android and iOS will have five tabs on the app’s home screen: Explore, Commute, Saved, Contribute, and Updates. The Explore tab will let users find information, ratings, reviews, and more for about 200 million places around the world, including local restaurants, nearby attractions, and city landmarks. The Commute tab will handle travelling in the form of route guidance and navigation, with real-time traffic updates, travel times and suggestions for alternative routes. The Saved tab will handle the more than 6.5 billion places that people have saved on Maps, which can now be viewed in one place. Users can also find and organize plans for an upcoming trip and share recommendations based on places they have been to. The Contribute tab lets hundreds of millions of users share local knowledge such as details about roads and addresses, missing places, business reviews and photos. Finally, the new Updates tab will provide users will a feed of “trending, must-see spots” from local experts and publishers. Users will also be able to directly chat with businesses here, in addition to discovering, saving, and sharing recommendations with their network.

The new Google Maps icon is based on the pin, which has been a key part of it since the beginning. Google says that the new icon “reflects the icon [it has] made in mapping the world”, and it “represents the shift [the company has] made from getting [users] to [their] destination to also helping [them] discover new places and experiences”. A party-themed car icon will also be available for a limited time in navigation.

New transit features

Google MapsGoogle’s new transit features for Maps were also detailed. The company notes that it introduced crowdedness predictions to help users see how crowded their bus, train or subway was likely to be based on past rides. Now, to help planning, it is adding new insights about the user’s route from past riders. Users will be able to check if the temperature is considered by past riders to be on the colder or warmer side. If they have special needs or require additional support, they can identify public transit lines with staffed assistance, accessible entrance and seating, accessible stop-button or hi-visible LED for accessibility. For regions where transit systems have specifically designated women’s sections or carriages, the company will help surface this information, along with whether other passengers abide by it. In terms of security, users will be able to know if security monitoring is on board, whether it’s with a security guard, installed security cameras, or an available helpline. A Japan-only feature will let users pick a route based on the number of carriages so that it increases their chances of getting a seat.

Google states this information comes from past riders who have shared their experiences. It will appear alongside public transit routes when available. Users will be asked a short survey within Maps about their experience on recent trips to help future riders. These features will be rolled out globally in March, with the condition of availability varying by region and municipal transportation agency.

Live View

Google MapsFinally, Google also wrote a bit about Live View. This feature was introduced in 2019 to help walking users decide which way to when they start a walking route with Maps. It combined Street View’s real-world imagery, machine learning, and smartphone sensors to show users’ surroundings with directions overload in AR. The company will be expanding Live View in the coming months and testing new capabilities, starting with better assistance for users when they are searching for a place. They will be able to see how far away and in which direction a place is.

This certainly appears to be a feature-rich update for Google Maps, fitting well with its 15th year. Users can download the newest version of Maps on the Play Store below.
