Xiaomi’s new Redmi Band features a 1.08″ color display and built-in charging plug

When it comes to affordable fitness bands, Xiaomi’s Mi Band lineup is often regarded as the best in the market. The latest release in the series — the Mi Band 4 — packed in a great selection of features, including continuous heart rate monitoring, at a very affordable price and it was quite well received. Banking on its popularity, Xiaomi’s sub-brand Redmi has now also launched an entry-level fitness band, called the Redmi Band, at a recent Mi Home event in China.

Unlike the Mi band lineup, the new Redmi Band features a completely new design with a square dial that houses a 1.08-inch color display and a single capacitive button underneath. Priced at CNY 99 (~$14), the entry-level fitness band offers features like heart rate monitoring, multiple sports modes for activity tracking, a sleep monitor, and a sedentary reminder, while boasting of a 14-day battery life on a single charge.

Being a budget-friendly fitness band, it skips on some of the more “premium” features found on the Mi Band lineup, like NFC for contactless payments, but it does offer a solution to the annoying charging situation associated with previous fitness bands from the company. Instead of a separate charging dock, the Redmi Band packs in a built-in USB plug for charging, much like the one found on the recently launched Realme Band, which is definitely a welcome addition.

In terms of customizations, the Redmi Band offers 70 official watch faces and it will be available in four wrist band color options, including black, blue, red and olive. Redmi is currently crowdfunding the new fitness band in its home country at a promotional price of CNY 95 (~$13.40) and it will be available for purchase starting from April 9th via Xiaomi Mall. As of now, the company has released no information regarding an international launch.

YouTube Shorts feature rolling out for some users

Short video content really appeals to a lot of users because it offers a short burst of entertainment without demanding any commitment. We’ve seen the proof in terms of the unprecedented growth of services like Snapchat, Instagram, and especially TikTok. This growth seems to have compelled bigger content platforms like YouTube to experiment with newer content forms such as 15-second long Stories introduced in November 2018. Much more recently, YouTube was also found experimenting with a TikTok-like feature called “Shorts” for relatively longer videos. And just a few days later, Shorts already seems to be rolling out to certain users.

youtube shorts youtube shorts youtube shorts

For all of these users, the Shorts show up differently inside the YouTube app. This suggests YouTube may be testing the feature is a small set of users. Shorts appear under Watch History or video suggestions under the currently played videos – either separately or alongside Stories.

You can tell Shorts apart from Stories by the timestamp, a title, and the name of the creator on the former instead of the channels’ thumbnail on Stories.

YouTube Shorts are of varying length and as per one user, videos of short length and vertical orientation might automatically get converted into this format. There seems to not be an exact way to upload videos as Shorts. But, unlike Stories, short videos don’t appear to be limited to popular creators.

Just like TikTok or Instagram, you can’t seek the short video but you do get the option to like or dislike it. You can also subscribe to the creator from the same window itself.

For now, there’s only limited information about Shorts but we’ll update you when we learn more.

Interestingly, this is not Google’s first attempt at competing with ByteDance’s TikTok. Back in January, Google launched Tangi, an app allowing indie creators to DIY and share short videos.

Google Duo 82 tests adding closed captions to messages

Of all the umpteen communication services that Google has dabbled with, Google Duo can be considered as one of the more successful ones around. While the service is not as popular as Apple’s FaceTime, it does come preloaded on Android devices through Google Mobile Services, making it one of the closest competitors for Android. Duo also is very easy to use, which definitely adds to its overall appeal. The app also has nifty features like the ability to send notes and doodles, video call in 1080p on certain devices, send out video voicemails, and more. Google was working on adding support for captions to video and audio messages, and now, we have managed to enable the feature to give you a preview of what to expect.

Captions within Google Duo is not intended to be used during live video calls. Instead, it will be available for the voicemail feature only, for the time being. With Google Duo v82, we managed to enable the feature and captured screenshots of the same.

Google Duo Closed Captions Google Duo Closed Captions

As you can see in the screenshots, there is a new “CC” button in the Message Player. This lets you toggle captions on and off. Once toggled on, captions will appear in the video. The audio content is shared with Google to enable the transcription, and the feature hint clarifies that the audio is not stored. The captions themselves were not absolutely accurate, but we did have some background noise in the audio and we also had to speak softly.

Also pictured in the screenshots is the ability to save the messages locally. This applies to videos, voice messages, photos, and notes, and you can save all of them locally. Both the Captioning and Save Messages features can be toggled in the Message settings separately.

The features pictured above are not currently available for the public, but they should be rolling out in the near future.

Google Photos 4.46 prepares to show photo creations in Memories and adds further hints for premium photo editing features

Google Photos v4.45 rolled out late last month and a teardown of the app revealed that Google was testing a new feature that would allow users to order photo prints in the Memories view. The teardown also revealed that the company is working on some premium editing features for the app for Google One subscribers. Now, Google has started rolling out Google Photos v4.46 and a teardown of the latest APK reveals a few more strings of code that hint at the premium editing feature, along with a new feature that will show photo creations in the Memories view.

An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.

Creations in Memories view

Google introduced the Memories view in Google Photos back in November last year to help users rediscover old photos. Strings of code spotted in the latest teardown reveal that Google will now also let users choose if they want to see Creations in the Memories view. For the unaware, Creations are photos that the app automatically generates using your images. These include things like collages, color pop photos, stylized photos, and more. The following strings of code suggest that Google may now let users decide if they wish to see these Creations in the Memories view and also give them the option to choose exactly which type of Creations are displayed.

<string name="photos_memories_settings_creation_animations_title">Animations</string>
<string name="photos_memories_settings_creation_collages_title">Collages</string>

<string name="photos_memories_settings_creation_types_summary">Select the types of creations to be shown in your memories.</string>

Premium photo editing features

In the previous teardown, we spotted a string that suggested that Google was testing new editing features in the app that would be reserved for Google One subscribers. We’ve now found more evidence of the premium editing features in Google Photos 4.46 which suggests that the Photos app will want to “upsell” you on a photo editor tool. Other strings where “upsell” is used all relate to getting users to buy more Google One storage.

<string name="photos_photoeditor_upsell_primary_button" />
<string name="photos_photoeditor_upsell_title">title</string>

Google Photos

Other than these upcoming features, we’ve also spotted a new UI for the Photos app in the latest update. The new UI is already available for some users and, as you can see in the attached screenshot, the Memories view now has a more prominent position right at the top of the app. In the Memories view settings, you currently get the option to hide specific people and pets from the Memories view.

Moto G8 Power Lite announced with 5,000mAh battery and triple cameras

Of late, Motorola has been launching phones with new zeal. Irrespective of whether it is the positivity brought by the attention and coverage of the new Motorola Razr or just the fear of losing out to the competition, Motorola’s new portfolio looks really diverse and robust. The company is also likely to make a comeback in the premium segment with the leaked Moto Edge+ soon. In its new entry-level and mid-range lineup, Motorola first introduced the Moto G8 Plus and Moto G8 Play followed by the Moto G Power and Moto G Stylus, and then the Moto G8. Now, it is launching the Moto G8 Power Lite with a mega 5,000mAh battery, 64GB storage, and triple cameras.

Just as the Motorola Moto G8 Power Lite leak had suggested, it features a 6.5-inch HD+ “Max Vision” display. The phone runs on an octa-core Mediatek Helio P35 chipset with a peak frequency of 2.3GHz. You get 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage as the standard for the smartphone and the storage can be further expanded by up to 256GB with a micro SD card.

The triple camera setup on the back includes a 16MP primary sensor along with a macro camera, seemingly identical to what we saw on the Motorola One Macro (camera review). Other than these, there is a 2MP depth sensor on the phone.

moto g8 power lite

Coming to its battery life, the Moto G8 Power Lite’s 5,000mAh battery is claimed to last two days. With an entry-level processor and an HD+ display, this is expected. In addition, the phone also supports charging at 10W, which isn’t fast by today’s standards. The company’s Mexican site reports it uses an 18W charger but that may be a mistake.

The phone comes with Android 9 Pie out-of-the-box and it does support Moto gestures.

Motorola will start selling the Moto G8 Power Lite in Mexico and Germany and it will eventually be available in parts of Asia, Australia, Europe, and LATAM over the coming weeks. In Germany, the phone will be available for a price of €169.

Honor 30 Pro may have Sony’s new 50MP IMX700 and a periscope telephoto camera

Huawei’s sub-brand Honor recently launched the Honor 30S in China alongside the Honor 9A. The first smartphone in the Honor 30 series packs in an impressive quad-camera setup, Huawei’s new HiSilicon Kirin 820 5G SoC, and support for 40W fast wired charging. However, during the event, the company made no mention of other devices in the Honor 30 series, namely the Honor 30 and Honor 30 Pro. The company is expected to launch the flagships on April 15th and just a few days ahead of the launch, a leaked image of what looks to be the Honor 30 Pro has surfaced online revealing some information about its camera setup.

The image in question was shared by GSMArena and although the publication claims that it’s the Honor 30, promotional material shared by the company reveals that the Honor 30 will feature a triple camera setup. This leads us to believe that the leaked image is that of the Honor 30 Pro which will feature a quad-camera setup with a 50MP Sony IMX700 primary sensor. Even though Sony hasn’t revealed any details about the new sensor, sources familiar with the details have revealed that it will be the industry’s largest Sony custom sensor. This suggests that it may very well match the Huawei P40 series’ 1/1.28″ sensor.

Honor 30 Pro

The image further confirms that the 50MP primary camera will be accompanied by three more cameras, with one of them featuring a periscope zoom lens. The quad-camera setup, along with a dual-LED flash, is housed within a rectangular camera module which has a golden accent all around and text that confirms the IMX700 sensor. The text also reveals that the Honor 30 Pro will feature Octa PD.

Additionally, the image reveals a secondary microphone at the top accompanied by antenna bands and, most likely, an IR blaster. The right edge of the device features a button, which could be the volume rocker. As of now, Honor has revealed no official information about its upcoming flagships but we expect to learn more in the days leading up to the launch.
