LG will reportedly unveil its new premium smartphone series on May 15th

Rumors about LG dropping its flagship G series first popped up late last month, with a report from a renowned Korean publication claiming that the brand would launch a Snapdragon 7xx-powered smartphone series instead. The publication revealed that the upcoming smartphone series would feature support for LG’s Dual Screen attachment, offer 5G connectivity, have a screen size between 6.7 to 6.9-inches, pack in a 48MP primary camera, and feature a 4,000mAh battery. While LG issued a statement shortly thereafter, the company neither confirmed nor denied the rumors. Now, the Naver News Agency has released another report which claims that the new LG smartphone series will be revealed on May 15th.

The report claims that at a recent product briefing with a few Korean telecom operators LG confirmed that it will be dropping the G series in favor of a new series. The company also revealed that the new series will be unveiled on May 15th, with one of the attendees quoted saying, “At present, 15 days is definite.” (translated) During the briefing, the company also revealed that the upcoming series will offer 5G support using a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 series chip. Since the Snapdragon 765 and 765G are the only 7-series chip from Qualcomm to feature a 5G modem, we can safely assume that either one of these will be powering the upcoming LG smartphone.

The Snapdragon 765 series are mid-range chips from Qualcomm, which are significantly cheaper than its flagship Snapdragon 865 SoC. Using the Snapdragon 765/765G will help LG significantly reduce the costs of the upcoming smartphone series, which falls in line with the company’s recent shift in strategy. According to LG’s 2019 financial report, the company aims to invest heavily in mass-premium and mass-tier 5G products in order to renew public interest in its devices.

Download: Xiaomi Mi Max 3 and Mi 8 Lite receive Android 10 updates with MIUI 11

Xiaomi is already working on MIUI 12, and very likely on Android 11 too. However, the version number of Xiaomi’s MIUI skin doesn’t have a 1:1 correspondence with the underlying Android layer. For example, a bunch of phones from the Chinese OEM has recently picked up the Android 10 update under the same MIUI 11 skin they had before. Two more devices are now eligible for the stable Android 10 OTA – the Mi Max 3 and the Mi 8 Lite.

Mi Max 3 XDA Forums || Mi 8 Lite XDA Forums

Android Pie-based MIUI 11 update landed on this device duo earlier, which is now made feature-complete with the introduction of Android 10. The current builds, MIUI V11.0.1.0.QEDMIXM for the Mi Max 3 and MIUI V11.0.1.0.QDTMIXM for the Mi 8 Lite, are shipped with February 2020 security patches. This is the second major Android version upgrade for these phones and it might be the last one as well. The resemblance isn’t as uncanny as it sounds, as the Mi Max 3 and the Mi 8 Lite even share a common kernel tree under the hood, albeit Xiaomi has yet to publish Android 10 kernel sources for them.

Besides the regular Recovery ROM, the company has also made the Fastboot flashable firmware packages public. Users no longer need an authorized Mi Account to flash the former, which indicates the stable nature of the builds.

The strategy of making ‘Lite’ variants of the flagship lineup seems to be beneficial for the OEM, but we can’t say the same for the ‘Max’ series. The legacy of Xiaomi phablets is now flowing through the Redmi Note series, marking the recently launched Redmi Note 9 Pro Max as the spiritual successor to the Mi Max 3.

Google rolls out a revamped library in YouTube Music that works more like Play Music

YouTube Music was introduced two years ago. Although Google projects it as the default music player for Android, it has not been able to fully replace its forerunner – Google Play Music – due to lack of a seamless UI. But, Google has been revamping the music player UI to fill in the cracks with several new features being added to YouTube Music lately. Besides the player UI, Google has also added personalized playlists, support for uploading your own music, gapless playback, etc. A reworked the library layout is also available now in order to make Google Play Music patrons feel at home as they’re impelled to switch over to YouTube Music.

In the earlier versions of YouTube Music, tracks were listed in the library on the basis of your YouTube and YouTube Music playback history under “Songs.” Now, when you add a track to your library, the primary artists and the album will also be listed automatically on the dedicated pages.

While the artists you subscribe to appear under Subscriptions, the artists for the songs added to your library will be added under “Artists” and you won’t be required to do that manually. Conversely, if you add a new album to your library, the songs will automatically be available under Songs.

The revamp finally makes it easier for Google Play Music users to switch over to YouTube Music. I or any of our colleagues from the XDA Portal team haven’t received the update despite being on the latest version of the app. We can expect the roll-out to take a few days or weeks and the duration might vary on several conditions including your geographical location.

YouTube Music has yet to catch up to other popular music streaming services like Spotify. One advantage YouTube Music has over competitors is that it borrows the large pool of music and related content from parent YouTube. Besides officially uploaded music, you can also find a variety of official and fan renditions, covers, BTS videos, and single instrument tracks. On top of that, the seamless transition between audio and video is its advantage, giving Google a significant potential to tap into the userbase.

Google Play Store tests a cleaner “My Apps” screen by removing the Library and Installed tabs

Over the course of the last decade, I’ve downloaded thousands of different apps from the Google Play Store. Naturally, most of these apps aren’t on my phone anymore but if I ever feel like giving any app a second shot, I can easily navigate to the Library tab in the My Apps & games section on the Play Store and download them again with just a tap. The section lists all the apps that you’ve ever downloaded using the same Google account and it makes it easy to locate that one app that you tried a long while ago and can’t remember the name of. Unfortunately, it seems like Google is now getting rid of the Library and Installed tabs in order to give the My apps & games section a cleaner look.

Google Play Store My Apps & Games old Google Play Store My apps & games new

Currently, the My apps & games section on the Google Play Store includes a maximum of 4 different tabs — Updates, Installed, Library, and Beta. These tabs list down all the available updates, installed apps, all the apps that you’ve ever downloaded using the same Google account, and the app betas that you’re currently enrolled in, respectively. However, Google is now testing an update for the My apps & games section which removes the Library and Installed tabs. The update comes just a few days after Google added download count and app size to the app search results in the Play Store and it is already available for some users on the latest version of the Google Play Store (v. 19.5.13). The change appears to have been triggered by a server-side update and, as of now, Google has released no official information about it.  Additionally, we aren’t sure if the company will be providing an alternate method to see your previously installed apps.

New Samsung Galaxy Buds leak with no stem and a kidney-shaped design

The Samsung Galaxy Buds from last year were easily among some of the best truly wireless earbuds on the market. So when leaks about a Samsung Galaxy Buds+ first surfaced online earlier this year, we had high hopes about the next-gen TWS earbuds from the company. Sadly though, the Galaxy Buds+ were just a minor upgrade over the previous generation and featured the same design with minimal improvements. The lack of active noise cancellation and water resistance was especially disappointing since it’s main competitor, the Apple AirPods Pro, included these features. Thankfully, just a few days ago, Samsung launched a new pair of TWS earbuds — the AKG N400 — which included these features. Now, leaked renders of the next-gen Galaxy Buds have surfaced online and they reveal a smaller, significantly different design.

As per a recent report from WinFuture, the upcoming Galaxy Buds go by the code name “Beans” and feature a more streamlined design that resembles kidney beans. Unlike the previous iterations, the compact design of the upcoming earbuds will sit more flush in the user’s ears and won’t protrude out as much. The earbuds will measure in at just 2.8cm, making them a bit more comfortable and easier to use, especially for people will small ears. However, the new design might have some adverse effects on sound isolation as the earbuds don’t have any silicone components to ensure a proper seal.

Samsung Galaxy Buds

Sources familiar with the product have also revealed that the upcoming Galaxy Buds, which go by the model number SM-R180, will feature two small speaker units each, with one providing the high notes and the other focusing on the lower end. To provide a fuller sound, the earbuds seem to have an opening on the outside, similar to what you would find on a subwoofer. Additionally, the earbuds will feature several built-in microphones to help users answer calls and interact with their assistant of choice, but we can’t be sure if the earbuds will feature active noise cancellation capabilities. As of now, we don’t have any further information about the earbuds’ specifications, but we expect to learn more in the months leading up to their launch. It’s worth noting that the upcoming Galaxy Buds are still in their early stages of development and Samsung might make some significant changes to the earbuds before they’re released or shelve the products altogether.

TWRP adds support for the Realme X2, Realme XT, and Xiaomi Mi Pad 4

Team Win Recovery Project, or TWRP for short, is the most popular custom recovery software designed for Android devices. It can make and restore full data backups, modify protected files, flash zip archives that contain modified apps or aftermarket OSes, and do much more. It’s available for a plethora of devices, and the list of supported devices keeps growing. Recently, the team officially added support for the Realme XT, the Realme X2, and the Xiaomi Mi Pad 4.

The Realme XT launched in India with ColorOS 6 based on Android 9 Pie but received an update to Android 10 with Realme UI earlier this year. There is already an ample selection of custom ROMs available for the device on our forums. Now with official TWRP support, users can flash custom ROMs and other mods without worrying about permanently losing all their data.

The Realme X2 launched shortly after the Realme XT and can be considered as a slightly upgraded variant of it. It, too, launched with ColorOS 6 based on Android 9 Pie but it also received an update to Android 10 with Realme UI earlier this year. There are comparatively fewer custom ROMs available for the Realme X2, but things could pick up with official TWRP now available.

Lastly, there’s the Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 and Mi Pad 4 Plus. These tablets are Xiaomi’s latest affordable mid-range tablets, though sadly they never launched outside of China. Xiaomi has not released MIUI 11 or Android 10 for the two tablets, so custom ROMs are currently the only way to enjoy the latest Android version. Fortunately, there are a plethora of options available on our forums.

You can download TWRP from the download pages linked below. Before you can install it, though, you’ll need to unlock the bootloader. Realme has posted guides on its official forums that teach you how to unlock the bootloader, while Xiaomi requires you to apply for a bootloader unlock code.
