Digital Wellbeing 1.0.3 tests a revamped Wind Down feature with new options and a Quick Settings tile

Today, Google rolled out version 1.0.302017577.beta of the Digital Wellbeing app on the Google Play Store. Digital Wellbeing is Google’s app to help users limit their smartphone use with features such as a Dashboard summarizing your phone use, Focus Mode to minimize distractions, Wind Down to help you put down the phone at night, and more. The latest update tweaks the settings screen for Wind Down and adds a Quick Settings tile to allow users to more quickly toggle the mode.

Google has redesigned the “Start” and “End” entries so that they both appear above the day selector. The Start and End times are now shown in a much larger text size with different colors to differentiate them. Meanwhile, the new Quick Setting tile, which we’ve noticed isn’t fully working for everyone, allows one to quickly toggle the Wind Down state.

An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.

We also enabled an even newer settings screen for the Wind Down feature in Digital Wellbeing. In this revamped version, the on/off toggle is no longer located at the top. Rather, Google has separated the options into what triggers Wind Down and what happens when Wind Down is on. Besides scheduling, Google has now added the option to enable Wind Down whenever you plug in your phone at night. You can customize the time so that it doesn’t activate when you’re charging your phone at work or in the car, though. We spotted this feature back in November alongside a new “Minimal Phone” mode, though the latter feature is not yet available.

Google publishes April 2020 Android Security Bulletin and patches for Pixel devices

Google has a monthly tradition of releasing new updates for its Pixel devices as well as publishing a new Android Security Bulletin. While the world around us seems to have come to a halt due to various lockdowns imposed by governments and authorities to contain COVID-19, Google is keeping up with this tradition. Google’s April 2020 security patches along with some bug fixes specific to the Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL, Pixel 2, and Pixel 2 XL are now available.

Fixes that are specific to the Pixel devices include a patch for a memory leak that can prevent additional Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connections, a patch for dropped Bluetooth audio input in call in certain situations, and a patch for occasional lag while opening the keyboard in certain applications. The build number for the April update on Pixel devices is QQ2A.200405.005. While the OTAs will be reaching your Google Pixel device in a matter of a few days, you can also manually sideload the update either by flashing the latest factory image, sideload the OTA file from recovery, or use the Android Flash Tool to do it all for you.

CarbonROM, BlissROMs, and AOSiP custom ROMs are now available for the POCO X2

Following the launch of the POCO X2 (review) in India, the company sent out a couple of units of the device to custom ROM and kernel developers. The idea behind the move was to help kickstart third-party development for the device and our first custom development roundup revealed that it’s been a massive success. Developers have already released four custom ROMs, two custom kernels, a Google Camera port, and unofficial TWRP for the device. And now, we have three more custom ROMs to add on to the list.

CarbonROM

An unofficial build of the AOSP-based CarbonROM is now available for the POCO X2, which brings a fast, stable and feature-filled stock Android experience. The Android 10-based ROM comes with included Google apps, so you don’t have to flash a GApps package separately and other than a minor ghosting issue, users have reported that the ROM works quite well. To try it out on your device, you can download the .zip package from the forum link below and flash it by following the instructions in this post.

An official build of the Android 10-based BlissROMs is now also available for the POCO X2, which offers plenty of customization options, added security measures, improved performance, and better battery life on the device. While a couple of users initially faced issues upon flashing the ROM, the developers have since released updated flashing instructions that seem to have addressed all issues. If you’re interested in trying out the BlissROM on your device, you can download the .zip package from the link below and carefully follow the latest instructions in the thread to get it up and running.

AOSiP ROM

Finally, an alpha build of the AOSiP ROM is now also available for the POCO X2. The AOSP based ROM packs in a ton of customization options and it even enables the hidden notification LED on the device. Since this is an alpha build, however, a few users have reported facing issues with Bluetooth audio playback, slow fingerprint unlock, and ghost touches. If you’re interested in trying out the ROM irrespective of that, you can find the flashing instructions in the forum post linked below.

TCL extends partnership with Pixelworks with the new TCL 10 series

At the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year in Las Vegas, TCL teased the TCL 10 series, a trio of mid-range smartphones under TCL’s own branding. Apart from the design and a few basic specifications, we didn’t know all that much about the new smartphone series. Today, however, TCL unveiled the full specifications, pricing, availability, and features of the new smartphones. They also announced an extension to their partnership with Pixelworks, a display and visual processing company, to bring the latter’s tech to TCL’s new 10 series.

As part of today’s announcement, Pixelworks confirmed that the 10 Pro, 10L, and 10 5G feature Pixelworks’ fourth-generation Iris chip, a display processing chip. The TCL 10 series use this Iris chip for HDR Tone Mapping, real-time SDR-to-HDR conversion, and picture clarity enhancements.

Before the 10 series, TCL’s first smartphone to feature Pixelworks’ display technology was the TCL Plex. The inclusion of Pixelworks tech in the 10 series is an extension of the partnership between the two companies. We can thus expect future TCL smartphones to have Pixelworks display technology, too, perhaps even with Pixelworks’ latest Iris 5 chip.

Pixelworks’ latest display chip, the Iris 5, is so far only found in the Black Shark 3 series and OPPO Find X2 series. The image embedded below is from a slide that Pixelworks shared with us. The slide shows the kinds of integrations that Pixelworks offers: Soft Iris (for software-only display enhancements) and the Iris visual processing chip (for hardware-accelerated display enhancements).

The 10 Pro features a curved AMOLED display likely from China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT), a China-based display producer owned by TCL. On the other hand, the 10L and 10 5G feature LCDs that are likely also manufactured by CSOT. The TCL 10 series thus not only represents the company’s biggest push into promoting its own smartphone brand but also their attempt at competing with other display manufacturers in the premium OLED segment.

The TCL 10 series are some of the more interesting devices to launch this year for the North America region. They were first announced and showed off at CES 2020 without a lot of information. Now, almost 4 months later, TCL is finally launching the phones, letting us know all that there is to the phones. The series is definitely an interesting one, so let’s get into it.

While the three TCL 10 series phones are all pretty different, they do all have a few features in common. The first is the software. All three devices have TCL UI, TCL’s UX skin on top of Android 10. The overall UI of TCL UI is very similar to Android 8. Next are the three eye comfort modes. All three phones have Adaptive Tone, Reading Mode, and Eye Comfort Mode. These should all make using the phones easier on your eyes.  Enhancing the display capabilities on these phones is the dedicated display engine and real-time SDR to HDR processing. This is thanks to visual technology from NXTVISION, which provides truer colors and contrast enhancements in real-time.

All three devices also have a smart key. You can customize this key on a single-tap, double-tap, or long-press to open the camera or pull up Google Assistant. Lastly, the series all have what TCL calls “Super Bluetooth”. Super Bluetooth allows you to connect up to four speakers or headphones at the same time. You can run an entire multi-speaker sound system off of a single phone. Speaking of audio, all three phones also retain the 3.5mm headphone jack.

TCL 10L

The TCL 10L is the least expensive of the TCL 10 series. Even though it’s the cheapest, it actually has a lot of features that are found in more expensive devices. The first and most noticeable when you first look at the device is the hole punch. It has a small hole punch in the top left corner. Surrounding that is the gorgeous 6.53-inch FHD+ LTPS LCD Dotch disiplay. Though it is an LCD panel, it looks really good. The display has an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and a contrast ratio of 1500:1. Unfortunately, TCL chose to only include a 60Hz panel, but that is excusable at the $250 price tag. The TCL 10L includes the aforementioned dedicated display engine powered from Pixelworks as well as optimizations powered by TCL’s NXTVISION technology.

The back of the phone, which is plastic, comes in two colors: Arctic White and Mariana Blue. Both colors have a cool color-shift effect depending on how you look at them. The back plastic houses the quad-camera and dual flash set up along with the rear capacitive fingerprint scanner. Though the back panel is plastic, it’s hard to tell. I honestly couldn’t tell that it was plastic. The colors do look fantastic as well.

The rear camera setup is interesting for its price. It has a main 48MP shooter with an aperture of f/1.8 and a pixel size of 0.8μm while un-binned. Next to that is the 8MP super wide camera. It has an aperture of  f/2.2 and a pixel size of 1.12μm. The phone also has two 2MP sensors, one for macro and one for depth. Both have an aperture of f/2.4 and pixel size of 1.65μm. The front camera is a 16MP sensor with a pixel size of 1.0μm and aperture of f/2.2. The front-facing camera is a fixed focus camera, so no autofocus. The phone can record 4K at up to 30fps, 1080p at up to 120fps, and 720p at up to 240fps.

The specs on the phone are also good for the price. It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 CPU with the Adreno 610 GPU. It comes with two storage sizes, 64GB of EMMC storage with 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of UFS storage with 6GB of RAM. All models of it include a Micro SD card slot with support for up to 256GB Micro SD cards. The phone has a 4,000 mAh battery, but with no fast charging. The TCL 10L will launch with Android 10 with the TCL UI skin on top. I was able to use the phones for a few minutes, and I will say they are pretty snappy. It was hard to immediately tell that it wasn’t an 8 series chip in the phone, which is a testimony to how good mid-range chips have gotten over the years.

The phone will cost €249/$249/£199 in the respective regions. It will be available in Europe, North America, Australia, and the United Kingdom starting in Q2 2020. This is a great budget phone with a fantastic camera setup and display for its low price.

TCL 10 Pro

The TCL 10 Pro is the most expensive and most premium of the TCL 10 lineup. Unlike the TCL 10L and TCL 10 5G, the TCL 10 Pro has an AMOLED display, which is an Always-on-display, and has a teardrop notch to accommodate the front camera. The teardrop notch cuts into the 6.47-inch FHD+ AMOLED display covered by curved glass. The display has an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and a contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1. Unfortunately, TCL chose to only include a 60Hz panel, but this phone is only $450. The TCL 10 Pro includes the dedicated display engine powered from Pixelworks. Some of the other display technology is powered by TCL’s NXTVISION tech, just like the TCL 10L and TCL 10 5G.

The back of the phone, which is a matte glass, comes in two colors: Forest Mist Green and Ember Gray. TCL says both colors have a slight gradient to them. The colors are striking in person and the soft-touch matte glass is really comfortable to hold. Embedded in the rear glass are the quad-cameras and dual flash setup. There is no rear fingerprint scanner as this is the only phone of the TCL 10 series to include an in-display fingerprint scanner.

The rear camera setup is an interesting one. It has a main 64MP shooter with an aperture of f/1.79 and a pixel size of 0.8μm while un-binned. Next to that is the 16MP super-wide camera. It has an aperture of  f/2.4 and a pixel size of 1.0μm. Next is the 5MP macro camera. It has an aperture of f/2.2 and a pixel size of 1.12μm. Lastly for the rear camera setup, a 2MP camera with an aperture of f/1.8 and a pixel size of 2.9μm. The front camera is a 24MP sensor with a pixel size of 0.9µm and aperture of f/2.0. Something else about the camera is the low light video. TCL is one of the few phones with a dedicated low-light video mode.

The specs on the phone are also decent. It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 CPU with the Adreno 612 GPU. It comes with a single storage size of 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage with 6GB of RAM. It includes a Micro SD card slot with support for up to 256GB Micro SD cards. The phone has a 4,500 mAh battery with 18W Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging. The TCL 10 Pro will launch with Android 10 and will receive an update to Android 11.

The phone will cost €449/$449/£399 in the respective regions. It will be available in Europe, North America, Australia, and the United Kingdom starting in Q2 2020. This is a great mid-range phone at a pretty low price.

TCL 10 5G

The TCL 10 5G is the only 5G phone of the TCL 10 series. Even though it is a 5G phone, the specs (other than the SoC) are very similar to the TCL 10L. This phone has a small hole punch in the top left corner. Surrounding that is the 6.53-inch FHD+ LTPS LCD display from Dotch. The display has an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and a contrast ratio of 1500:1. Unfortunately, TCL chose to only include a 60Hz panel, but that is excusable at the $250 price tag. The TCL 10 5G includes the aforementioned dedicated display engine powered from Pixelworks. Some of the other display technology is powered by NXTVISION.

The back of the phone, which is glass, comes in two colors: Chrome Blue and Mercury Gray. Both colors have a gradient color texture. The back houses the quad-camera and dual flash set up along with the rear capacitive fingerprint scanner.

The rear camera setup is an interesting one. It has a main 64MP shooter with an aperture of f/1.89 and a pixel size of 0.8μm while un-binned. Next to that is the 8MP super wide camera. It has an aperture of  f/2.2 and a pixel size of 1.12μm. Next is the 5MP macro camera. It has an aperture of f/2.2 and a pixel size of 1.12μm. The last sensor on the rear is a 2MP camera with an aperture of f/1.8 and a pixel size of 2.9μm. The front camera is a 16MP sensor with a pixel size of 1.0µm and aperture of f/2.2.

The TCL 10 Pro will launch with Android 10 with the TCL UI skin on top.

The phone will cost €399/£399 in the respective regions. It will be available in select regions starting later this month. During our briefing, TCL also told us that the TCL 10 5G would be available later this year on a US carrier, but they didn’t tell us anything else. All in all, this is a great budget 5G phone.

Xiaomi rolls out PatchWall 3.0 for Mi TV users in India with Disney+ Hotstar integration, and more

Xiaomi in India is commonly associated with smartphones, but the company is also known for its products beyond. Their fitness tracker, the Mi Band 4, has helped shape the category in the country. And the same can also be said about Mi TVs, which have brought smart TVs to the middle-class Indian household. In addition to launching new TV products in India, Xiaomi has also been providing regular updates to its TVs. Now, Xiaomi is announcing the release of PatchWall 3.0 to its TV lineup in India, bringing along new content partners and deeper integrations.

Xiaomi’s Mi TVs run on Google’s Android TV platform, but with its own custom UX skin on top, called PatchWall. PatchWall first arrived on the scene with the Mi TV 4, while PatchWall 2.0 made its debut in September 2019. Xiaomi is now releasing PatchWall 3.0, the latest version of its software UX.

Changes

According to Xiaomi, PatchWall 3.0 follows along with the company’s content-first software strategy for TVs.

This new update features several new features and improvements:

• Disney+ Hotstar integration: This integration has allowed Xiaomi to introduce a dedicated sports channel, that helps with content discovery as well as giving users a one-click Play option for various sports content such as ongoing tournaments across sports like Kabaddi, Tennis, Cricket and more.
• New content partners: Docubay and Lattu Kids have been added as content partners. Docubay allows the streaming of international documentaries across various topics, while Lattu Kids boasts of over 1,500 hours of children-focused content.
• Mi List: Mi List now features curated lists of movies and TV shows from different genres, alongside being contextually-aware.
• UI enhancements such as:
  • Cleaner animations: Animations for browsing through carousels have been redesigned to give greater focus on the current selection.
  • Horizontal scrolling: The zero-screen in PatchWall 3.0 and on the Show Details page now enables horizontal scrolling through different lists.
  • New Mi Lanting Pro font: The new font from MIUI 11 has also been added.

PatchWall 3.0 – Rollout

PatchWall 3.0 will be rolled out on Mi TVs with the latest software update from April 06, 2020. The software update will be rolled out to Mi TV 4A, Mi TV 4C Pro, Mi TV 4A Pro, Mi TV 4 Pro, Mi TV 4X, and Mi TV 4X Pro over the coming days.
