The OnePlus 8 Pro’s Color Filter camera can see through some plastic objects

OnePlus’ latest flagship, the OnePlus 8 Pro, is inarguably the company’s best smartphone yet. Unlike its predecessors, the OnePlus 8 Pro (review) is a full-fledged flagship device that packs in all of the features that the company skimped out on in previous generations. These include things like support for fast wireless charging, an IP rating for dust/water resistance, and a flagship-grade camera setup. Speaking of which, the OnePlus 8 Pro packs in a quad-camera setup like most other premium flagships out there. However, OnePlus’ choice of camera sensors doesn’t fall in line with the current trend in the premium flagship space. Instead of using a 108MP Samsung ISOCELL sensor or a 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor, the OnePlus 8 Pro packs in a 48MP Sony IMX689 primary sensor. The primary camera is accompanied by a 48MP ultra-wide sensor, an 8MP telephoto camera, and a new 5MP Color Filter camera; the likes of which we haven’t seen in any other smartphone out there.

OnePlus claims that the Color Filter camera is used for camera filters that can be applied to the final shot but that can also be achieved even without the Color Filter camera. This means that the sensor can only be used for infrared photography, using the new Photochrom mode on the OnePlus 8 Pro. However, as it turns out, there’s another use case for the new Color Filter camera. According to a recent post from XDA Senior Member combat goofwing on our forums, the sensor can be used to see through some plastic objects.

OnePlus 8 Pro Color Filter X-Ray 14 OnePlus 8 Pro Color Filter X-Ray 14

As you can see in the images above, clicking pictures of some plastic objects using the Color Filter camera in the Photochrom mode reveals their internal circuitry. While we aren’t completely sure of the reason behind this behavior, it seems that the Color Filter camera is not filtering IR light as there is no IR cutoff filter which, in turn, allows you to see through the plastic. As demonstrated in a video shared on the original thread, the ‘feature’ works even in the viewfinder and you can clearly see the internal circuitry of a TV remote. Max Weinbach from our team was able to test the feature on his OnePlus 8 Pro and it seems to work on a vast variety of objects, ranging from security cameras to VR headsets (gallery). And no, this can’t be used to see through clothes. Don’t try it, perverts.

Samsung’s budget Galaxy A21s leaks with quad rear cameras, hole-punch display, and the new Exynos 850

Last month Samsung announced the budget-friendly Galaxy A21 in the US market alongside four new Galaxy A‌ series of smartphones. Although the device has yet to officially go on sale in the US, it turns out Samsung is already working on a new variant. According to WinFuture, Samsung is gearing up to launch the Galaxy A21s, an upgraded version of the Galaxy A21.

The Samsung Galaxy A21s will bring some much-needed upgrades in the areas of camera, SoC, and battery. WinFuture has also managed to obtain the renders of the Galaxy A21s which gives us a detailed look at the overall design of this upcoming budget smartphone. As you can see in the images attached below, the front of this device looks exactly the same as the A21, packing a hole-punch display and a spacious bottom chin. The resemblance starts to fade when we move to the back though. Where the Galaxy A21 arranged cameras in a vertical strip, the upcoming phone opts for the L-shaped camera setup that has become a norm on Samsung phones as of late.

In terms of specifications, the Galaxy A21s is expected to feature a 6.5-inch PLS TFT HD+ display with a resolution of 1600 x 720. On the inside, the phone will be powered by an unreleased Exynos 850 octa-core chipset.

Coming to the cameras, the quad-camera setup will have a 48MP f/2.0 primary camera — a step up from 16MP of Galaxy A21 — an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, 2MP macro lens, and 2MP depth sensor. It will continue to use the same 13MP front camera, but thanks to the new chipset, it will allow shooting 1080p videos, the report notes.

The phone will pack a hefty 5,000 mAh battery, compared to the 4,000 mAh unit on the predecessor, that will charge via a USB-C‌ port. Moreover, the device is expected to feature a headphone jack, NFC, and Bluetooth 5.0. Finally, the phone will run Android 10 based on an unspecified version of One UI.

As for pricing and availability, the Galaxy A21s will be offered in black, white, and blue and is expected to go on sale by the end of May at a probable price of around 199 or 209. Details regarding the international availability remain unknown as of now.

Huawei can’t launch new Android smartphones with Google apps before May 2021 as Trump extends trade ban

The last few smartphones launched by Huawei and its sub-brand Honor don’t come with Google Mobile Services (GMS) or the Google Play Store. Instead, they feature Huawei’s own alternatives to these services, namely Huawei Mobile Services Core (HMS Core) and Huawei AppGallery. This is due to the fact that on May 15th, 2019, U.S. President Donald Trump signed Executive Order 13873, declaring a “national emergency” under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, in order to limit the ability of U.S. companies to do business with entities deemed to be national security threats, including Huawei and its subsidiaries. The executive order was scheduled to lapse this month, however, a recent report from Reuters reveals that it has now been extended for another year.

The report states that on May 13th, 2020, Trump re-signed the executive order, continuing its effectiveness for 1 year, until May 15th, 2021. In an official statement released on the White House website, President Donald Trump was quoted saying, “For this reason, the national emergency declared on May 15, 2019, must continue in effect beyond May 15, 2020. Therefore, in accordance with section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1622(d)), I am continuing for 1 year the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13873 with respect to securing the information and communications technology and services supply chain.”

When the original executive order went into effect, Huawei and its many subsidiaries were added to the U.S. Commerce Department’s Entity List. This barred Google from signing new MADAs (Mobile Application Distribution Agreements) with Huawei to distribute GMS (Google Mobile Services) on new Huawei and Honor devices released after May 15th, 2019.

The full scope of this ban never went into effect, though, as the U.S. granted Huawei a Temporary General License (TGL) to do limited business with U.S. companies (and this TGL was extended several times over the last year). Thanks to this TGL, Huawei can continue to ship GMS on its existing Huawei and Honor branded smartphones. Reuters points out that this TGL will be extended yet again, stating that “The U.S. Commerce Department is also expected to extend again a license, set to expire on Friday, allowing U.S. companies to keep doing business with Huawei, a person briefed on the matter said.”

As mentioned earlier, due to the original trade ban Huawei has been developing alternatives to Google Mobile Services and Google Play Store — HMS Core and AppGallery. The company has released new devices without GMS — the Huawei Mate 30 series, Huawei P40 series, and the Honor 30 series just to name a few — and is continuing to design new SoCs based on their existing license agreements with ARM — Kirin 990, Kirin 810, and Kirin 820. Lastly, Huawei has also been able to partially sidestep the U.S. trade ban by re-releasing devices into the market that maintain software compatibility with already certified devices.

Indian Pricing

India is currently in the middle of a lockdown because of COVID-19, because of which, many OEMs have had to shelve their plans. Nonetheless, the company is going ahead with a price reveal.

OnePlus 8 OnePlus 8 Pro OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z

The OnePlus 8 series will be available in the following RAM and storage variants at the below-mentioned prices:

  • OnePlus 8:
    • 6GB + 128GB: ₹41,999 (Amazon.in exclusive) (Glacial Green)
    • 8GB + 128GB: ₹44,999 (Onyx Black, Glacial Green)
    • 12GB + 256GB: ₹49,999 (Onyx Black, Glacial Green, Interstellar Glow)
  • OnePlus 8 Pro:
    • 8GB + 128GB: ₹54,999 (Onyx Black, Glacial Green)
    • 12GB + 256GB: ₹59,999 (Onyx Black, Glacial Green, Ultramarine Blue)
  • OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z: ₹1,999 (Black, Blue, Mint, Oat)

XDA Review: OnePlus 8 || OnePlus 8 Pro

Interestingly, India gets a lower RAM variant and an even lower starting price point ($549). Even the matching variants are priced lower in India. For instance, the starting 8GB + 128GB variant of the OnePlus 8 costs ~$588, which is a good ~$100 cheaper than the US pricing of $699. Similarly, the OnePlus 8 Pro’s 12GB + 256GB variant costs ~$785, which is a far cry from the $999 price tag for the top variant. Even the OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z is half the price. Keep in mind that the Indian variant lacks some 5G bands, which is a non-issue for India because the country does not have 5G anyway.

The phones and accessories will be available across all online and offline channels when the sale is made possible in India in line with the government’s COVID-19 advisories.

Here is the complete price chart for major markets:

Device USD UK EU India
OnePlus 8 – 6GB RAM + 128GB storage: Glacial Green ₹41,999 (~$549)
OnePlus 8 – 8GB RAM + 128GB storage: Onyx Black, Glacial Green $699 £599 €699 ₹44,999 (~$589)
OnePlus 8 – 12GB RAM + 256GB storage: Interstellar Glow $799 £699 €799 ₹49,999 (~$654)
OnePlus 8 – 12GB RAM + 256GB storage: Onyx Black, Glacial Green ₹49,999 (~$654)
OnePlus 8 – 8GB RAM + 128GB storage: Polar Silver* $799
OnePlus 8 Pro – 8GB RAM + 128GB storage: Glacial Green, Onyx Black $899 £799 €899 ₹54,999 (~$719)
OnePlus 8 Pro – 12GB RAM + 256GB storage: Glacial Green, Onyx Black ₹59,999 (~$785)

The Huawei Mate 30 series will get the EMUI 10.1 update globally next month

Due to the US trade ban, Huawei is barred from conducting business with US-based companies. One of the direct implications of this decision in the Android context is that the company can no longer ship Google apps on its phones. However, that isn’t stopping the Chinese smartphone maker from providing its phones with the latest software updates via EMUI 10.1.

In March, Huawei unveiled the Huawei P40 series that came running EMUI 10.1, a slightly updated version of EMUI 10. Shortly after the launch, the company released a list of phones that would be receiving the EMUI 10.1 update with Android 10. As promised the company rolled out a beta of EMUI 10.1 based on Android 10 to the Huawei Mate 30, P30, and Nova 5T. What remained unclear, however, was the exact timeline about the stable rollout. But that changes today.

Huawei Mate 30 XDA Forums

A Huawei spokesperson has now confirmed to us that the company is planning to release the stable EMUI 10.1 update based on Android 10 to the Huawei Mate 30 series in mid-June. In the first phase, the update will be rolled out to users in the UK, Spain, France, Chile, Mexico, Colombia, South Africa, with the rollout hopefully expanding to more regions at a later date. It should be noted that the Chinese variants of Huawei Mate 30 have already received a stable update.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro XDA Forums

As a refresher, the Huawei Mate 30 series was announced in September last year — consisting of the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro. The Pro variant packed a curved 6.53-inch OLED display, quad cameras, Exynos 990 SoC, up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, a 4,500 battery, and IP68 dust and water resistance. The standard Mate 30, on the other hand, featured a flat 6.63-inch display, a smaller 4,200 mAh battery, IP53 rating, and retained the 3.5mm jack. The Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro were the first phones to launch outside China without Google apps. The phones came running EMUI 10 based on Android 10 but swapped Google Mobile Services (GMS) for Huawei’s own Huawei Mobile Services (HMS).

Google Lens tests a new Education mode for solving math problems and a new Places mode to look up buildings

Earlier this year in March, an APK teardown of the Google App v11.3.7.29 revealed two unreleased features — Offline Translations and an Education Mode for Google Lens. At the time, we managed to briefly surface the Education mode and learned that the mode would allow users to solve math problems by pointing the camera at an equation. However, we weren’t able to see the mode in action in the previous release. Google recently started rolling out version 11.9.14.29 of the Google App and our Editor-in-Chief, Mishaal Rahman, has now successfully managed to enable the Education mode.

As you can see in the screenshots below, the new Education mode in Google Lens allows you to easily solve math problems by simply pointing your smartphone’s camera at the equation. The feature works pretty much like the Microsoft Math Solver or the Photomath app, making use of Google’s AI to identify the equation and then subsequently deliver a result.

Google Lens

Unlike the other two apps, however, the feature also brings up related search results to help users understand how it reached the solution. It’s worth noting that we aren’t completely sure of the new Education mode’s capabilities and whether it will be able to solve complex equations like Math Solver and Photomath.

Additionally, Mishaal also managed to surface another upcoming Google Lens mode called Places that will help users recognize famous landmarks in a similar fashion. While we weren’t able to properly test the Places mode due to the current travel limitations, we tried using it with some images of famous buildings from Google Images.

As of now, the feature doesn’t work with images of landmarks but that might change by the time it’s officially released. Speaking of which, we currently don’t have any information from Google regarding these new modes or when they will be released to the public.

[Update: Launched in India] FreeBuds 3 are Huawei’s newest wireless earbuds with active noise cancellation and wireless charging

Update 1 (05/13/2020 @ 03:55 AM ET): Huawei has launched the FreeBuds 3 in India. Scroll to the bottom for more information. The article as published on September 7, 2019, is preserved below.

Huawei is taking the stage at IFA 2019 to announce some important devices in its portfolio. First up was the Kirin 990 and Kirin 990 5G flagship SoCs, one of which comes with an integrated modem, and which will find their way inside the upcoming Huawei Mate 30 series smartphones. Next up was the Huawei P30 Pro, which received dual-tone color finish options. At the event, Huawei also announced the FreeBuds 3: their newest wireless earbuds with active noise cancellation.

The Huawei FreeBuds 3 are visually identical to the Apple Airpods, and the similarities are very obvious in the design of the earbuds, though the charging case sees some variance. The earbuds individually weigh just 4.5g each, while the charging case weighs 48g on its own.

Huawei FreeBuds 3

The FreeBuds 3 employ HiSilicon’s Kirin A1 Bluetooth chipset that lets it enjoy dual-mode Bluetooth 5.1  and BLE 5.1 connectivity support, as well as allowing the FreeBuds 3 pair to deliver true stereo sound simultaneously yet independently with a claimed latency as low as 190ms. The earbuds come with a high-sensitivity 14mm dynamic driver.

The standout feature on these earbuds is the fact that they come with active noise cancellation, promising to eliminate background noise and enhance voice output during calls, despite being an open-fit style earbuds. The built-in bone voice sensor also helps pick up your voice better and reduce ambient sound around it. Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) can also be controlled by double-tapping the left earbud.

For charging, the Huawei FreeBuds 3 relies on its rounded charging case to provide up to 20 hours of battery life with its 410mAh battery, and 4 hours of music playback by themselves through their individual 30mAh battery. You can charge the case with a USB Type-C cable, or wirelessly through a wireless charger or a phone with reverse wireless charging. The earbuds and case come in Ceramic White and Carbon Black color variants. Pricing and market availability have not been announced, but we reckon these will see marketing centered around the Huawei Mate 30 series.
