Official Citra for Android releases as the first mobile Nintendo 3DS emulator

We’ve already covered Nintendo 3DS emulation on Android numerous times, though earlier attempts were made possible by unofficial Android ports of the incredibly popular Citra emulator on PC. With the help of both developers of those unofficial ports, there’s now an official build of Citra for Android. What’s more, this Nintendo 3DS emulator is available on the Google Play Store for free!

There are a lot of features present in the official port released today that weren’t available in the initial port, and all of these features work to provide a rather full-fledged Nintendo 3DS emulation experience. That includes amiibo support, motion controls, microphone and camera support, and gamepad support, just to name a few. The team behind the Citra 3DS emulator documented and published the story of the entire development process on their website, which goes in-depth as to how the two previous unofficial ports affected the development of this official version. If you remember the first attempt at emulating 3DS games on Android, it barely worked as it was slow and had a lot of issues. The second (and ongoing) “MMJ” unofficial ports were much better in terms of performance, but the average user will likely want to stick with official builds that are now available.

I did some brief testing on the official build and found that Nintendo 3DS games like Mario Kart 7 and Animal Crossing: New Leaf ran extremely well on my OnePlus 8 Pro powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. We also played a bit of Fire Emblem: Fate on the OPPO Find X2 Pro powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, and it mostly ran at a stable 60fps. We’ll be doing some more in-depth testing over the weekend to see just how viable Citra is across a number of devices with different chipsets. Currently, the team behind Citra recommends that your device has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 or better, though performance will also be heavily dependant on the device’s GPU drivers. In general, Qualcomm Snapdragon devices will run Citra better than Samsung Exynos or HiSilicon Kirin devices. Your smartphone must also be running Android 8.0 Oreo at minimum and support OpenGL ES 3.2. You may run into graphical glitches and other problems on unsupported devices.

You can download the Citra for Android app from the Google Play Store below. There is a $4.99 in-app purchase to unlock premium features that, for now, include a dark mode theme and a texture filtering option that increases the fidelity of the graphics. Although the base app is free, the Citra team asks that you support their development efforts by contributing to them on Patreon.

Here are the developers who worked to make this Android port of Citra possible:

  • bunnei for leading the project
  • The developers of the Dolphin emulator for the frontend (UI) that we heavily borrowed from and the Aarch64 machine code emitter.
  • BreadFish64 for OpenGL ES improvements, Motion Control support, and Texture Filtering.
  • liushuyu for OpenGL ES bug fixes.
  • SachinVin for originally repurposing the Dolphin UI, adding initial OpenGL ES support, and implementing most of the Aarch64 dynarmic backend.
  • Tobi for Amiibo support, Mic support, translations, bug fixes, porting frontend changes from Dolphin upstream, and more.
  • weihuoya for implementing AAC decoding for Android
  • zhaowenlan1779 for the software keyboard applet and camera support implementation.

ASUS ZenFone 7 and ROG Phone III will reportedly launch around July

At the Snapdragon Tech Summit last year, Qualcomm announced its latest flagship chipset — the Snapdragon 865. Since then, we’ve seen the chipset on a couple of devices, including the OnePlus 8 series, the OPPO Find X2 series, the Xiaomi Mi 10 series, Realme X50 Pro, the iQOO 3, among others. Earlier this year in February, Qualcomm also released a list of 19 announced and upcoming devices that would feature the Snapdragon 865 SoC. This included the yet unannounced ASUS ROG Phone III and ASUS ZenFone 7. While we still haven’t heard anything about the devices from ASUS, a recent report from Taiwanese publication Commercial Times claims that the devices will be launched around July this year.

The report states that the ZenFone 7 and ROG Phone III will be launched towards the end of the second quarter or early in the third quarter of 2020, with ASUS expecting a 30-50% growth in sales for its upcoming gaming smartphone. While we have no further information about the devices yet, it’s worth noting that the ROG Phone III recently passed the WiFi Alliance’s certification process with the model number I003DD.

Even though the certification doesn’t reveal any new information about the device, the fact that ASUS has already received certification for the device means that the company is well past the development process and might be launched soon. For the unaware, the ROG Phone III is a follow up to last year’s ROG Phone II which is known for disrupting the gaming smartphone segment with its flagship specifications and relatively affordable price tag. The ZenFone 7, on the other hand, follows the ZenFone 6 (or ASUS 6Z) from last year, which featured an innovative flip camera module.

Discord for Android rolls out noise suppression powered by Krisp for some users

Since its debut back in 2015, Discord has evolved quite a bit and it’s now one of the most popular instant messengers for gamers and professionals alike. One of the main reasons behind Discord’s popularity is the sheer number of features it offers, both for text-based communication and VoIP calls. To provide users the best calling experience on the platform, Discord introduced a new noise suppression feature powered by Krisp for the desktop client earlier this year in April. The feature makes use of machine learning to remove background noise and, after using it for the last few weeks, I can attest that it’s actually quite fantastic. Which is why I’m excited to try it out on my phone, now that it’s rolling out to some users on the Discord app for Android.

The noise suppression feature is already available for some users on Discord for Android version 24-alpha 1. XDA Senior Member Some_Random_Username has the feature in his app and has shared the following screenshots. As you can see, the noise suppression feature appears as a new icon in the top right corner of the app when you’re in a channel. You can tap on the icon to enable noise suppression, which will instantly drown out any background noise. Alternatively, you can toggle noise suppression for all calls from within the app’s settings and you can also enable it from within the three-dot menu on any channel.

Our Editor-in-Chief, Mishaal Rahman, downloaded the latest Discord release on his Pixel 4 but he didn’t find the option to enable Krisp noise suppression. I also installed the APK on my Realme 6 Pro and got the same result. This leads us to believe that Discord is currently testing the feature with only a handful of users and it may roll out to more users in the following weeks. In case you think you might be one of the lucky few to receive the feature, you can try installing the Discord 24-alpha 1 APK on your phone by following the link below.

WhatsApp Beta v2.20.171 brings support for profile QR codes

WhatsApp for Android operates in two public branches: stable and beta. While the stable branch is where you want to be as the average user, the beta branch gives us the opportunity to witness the features that are in development for this popular instant messaging app. Past WhatsApp Betas have shown off hints for upcoming features such as multi-device support, expiring messages, Facebook story sharing, animated stickers, and even the famed dark theme. A previous beta had also spotted hints for QR code support for profiles, and now, the latest beta brings over support for the same.

As reported by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp for Android Beta v2.20.171 brings in support for QR codes for user profiles. This change is actually a server-side update, but you do need to be on this version to receive the feature. As one can expect, users get their own personal QR Code which they can share with other users, who can simply scan the code and add the phone number of the sharing user to their contact book. Since WhatsApp is tied to phone numbers, adding a contact number is enough to add a contact to your WhatsApp contact list.

To check out your personal QR code, you need to navigate to WhatsApp Settings and click on the QR code icon near your profile information. This opens up a new page within the app: on the first tab, you can view your own QR code, and on the second tab, you can scan QR codes from others. We also spot an image picker icon, indicating that you should also be able to scan a code from a pre-existing image in your gallery, for example, a screenshot. If needed, you can also revoke your QR code to prevent your number from being shared further.

As mentioned, this feature is currently available in the latest release within the beta branch of WhatsApp for Android. There is no word on when the feature will be making its way to the stable branch. While QR codes are definitely handy for quickly adding a contact, you can always just share your phone number — so you aren’t losing out all that much either way.

OPPO Find X2 Pro, Neo, and Lite are now available in Germany with free Bluetooth audio accessories as bonuses

OPPO was expected to debut its Find X2 series at the MWC 2020 trade show earlier this year. However, due to the rising COVID-19 concerns, the event was canceled and OPPO postponed the launch to a later date. The Find X2 and Find X2 Pro were then revealed early in March this year, with the OPPO Find X2 Lite joining the lineup later in April. Now, according to a recent report from GSMArena, the company has launched the Find X2 Pro and Find X2 Lite in Germany, along with the new Find X2 Neo.

OPPO Find X2 Pro

Out of the three devices, the OPPO Find X2 Pro (first impressions) is the only Snapdragon 865 powered flagship which features a 6.7-inch QHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a triple camera setup with a 48MP Sony IMX689 primary sensor, 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.0 storage.

OPPO Find X2 Lite

The OPPO Find X2 Lite, on the other hand, is a rebranded Chinese Reno3 Vitality Edition featuring Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 765G chip, 8GB of LPDDR4x RAM, 128GB UFS 2.1 storage, and a quad-camera setup with a 48MP primary sensor. The device features a 6.4inch FHD+ AMOLED display and a 4,025mAh battery with support for 30W fast wired charging.

OPPO Find X2 Neo

The new OPPO Find X2 Neo, which is a rebranded Chinese Reno3 Pro 5G, also features the Snapdragon 765G chipset, coupled with up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The device features a 6.5-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, a quad-camera setup with a 48MP primary sensor, and a 4,025mAh battery.

Pricing and Availability

The OPPO Find X2 Pro, Find X2 Neo, and Find X2 Lite are up for preorders across various eCommerce platforms in the country. The pricing details are as follows:

  • OPPO Find X2 Pro – €1,199 (~$1318)
  • OPPO Find X2 Neo – €699 (~$769)
  • OPPO Find X2 Lite – €499 (~$549)

In case you don’t wish to pay the full price upfront, Vodafone and Deutsche Telekon are offering on-contract deals for the three devices in the country. It’s also worth noting that if you purchase any of these three Find X2 models before June 14th, OPPO will include a pair of Bluetooth headphones with the device. OPPO Find X2 Lite buyers will be eligible for a pair of OPPO Enco W31 TWS earbuds, Find X2 Neo buyers will get a pair of OPPO Enco Free TWS earbuds, and Find X2 Pro buyers will get a Bang & Olufsen Beoplay H8i Bluetooth headphone.

[Update: May 21 builds] Download the MIUI 12 Closed Beta for Xiaomi and Redmi devices

Update 3 (05/21/2020 @ 07:05 AM ET): Added download links for MIUI 12 latest beta builds, compiled on May 21, 2020.

Update 2 (05/18/2020 @ 07:25 AM ET): Added download links for MIUI 12 latest beta builds, compiled on May 18, 2020.

Update 1 (05/11/2020 @ 09:30 AM ET): MIUI 12 closed beta download links refreshed with newer releases (compiled on May 11). The article as published on April 28, 2020, is preserved below.

The latest version of Xiaomi’s custom Android skin – MIUI 12 – is finally here. The company has dropped the curtain yesterday, alongside the Mi 10 Youth Edition launch event in China. Compared to MIUI 11, the stable version of which was released less than six months ago, MIUI 12 brings in a slew of improvements, visual overhauls, and many new features. We have already extracted the new wallpapers, and now we are presenting the downloading links of the first set of MIUI 12 beta firmware packages for a bunch of Xiaomi and Redmi devices.

It is worth mentioning that these closed beta builds are meant for the Chinese variants, as Xiaomi suspended the rollout of MIUI global beta since last year. As a consequence, you have to flash these recovery ROMs using TWRP to bypass the MIUI beta account whitelisting. Do not expect Google Play Services or any pre-installed Google apps in them. Language options are likely limited to English and Chinese only, too. Xiaomi did launch MIUI 12 globally, and we are waiting for builds to appear for that too. Meanwhile, you can try out the closed betas from China.

The beta MIUI 12 builds listed below are based on either Android Pie or Android 10, depending on the device.

You can download the latest beta (20.5.18) of MIUI 12 for your device from the links below. You can also visit our linked forums in case you need further assistance. While all of these download links are directly from Xiaomi, users are advised to proceed at their own risk. We warn you once again, this is not intended for the average consumer and is recommended only for users comfortable with flashing ROMs.
