[Update: Global rollout] Amazon finally adds Profiles to Prime Video like Netflix

Update 1 (7/08/2020 @ 02:25 AM ET):  Profiles in Amazon Prime Video are now rolling out globally. The article from March 23rd, 2020, has been preserved below.

Almost the entire world is under lockdown and social distancing can make you anxious. We’re fortunate to live in a time when digital entertainment is abundant and so easily accessible. Amazon Prime Video, one of the most popular sources of online cinema and long-form video content, is now adding the new Profiles feature which will make entertainment even more convenient for users. It lets you share your account with your family and friends without worrying about messing up your watch history and recommendations.

The Profile option has long been present on Netflix. It not only allows multiple users to use the same account to watch different content but also isolates their content feeds and seasons’ progress. Among the features that Amazon Prime Video borrows from Netflix, Prime subscribers can use the latest one to add up to six profiles. Out of these six profiles, at least one (admin profile) needs to be an adult while the remaining five can either be profiles for adults or kids under 12 years of age.

You can either create profiles from the Amazon Prime Video apps on Android or through the web portal. Tap on the “My Stuff” button with the blank avatar icon in the menu bar at the bottom of the screen. Then tap on your name and followed by the “Create profile” button from the drop-down menu. On the Prime Video website, you can access this menu directly from the top right corner of the web page. You can also tap on Manage Profile to rename profiles or delete them.

There’s also a Kids profile that filters content unsuitable for kids. On the My Stuff page, you can access the content you’ve downloaded or saved for watching later. Unlike Netflix, however, there is currently no option to change the avatar of Amazon Prime Video profiles.

The Profiles feature is currently limited to certain countries as per Amazon’s support page and is rolling out to users gradually.

Update: Profiles in Amazon Prime Video now available globally

After rolling out Profiles to users in India and parts of Africa, Amazon has now launched the features for users worldwide including the U.S. The feature will be available via the apps on iOS, Android, Fire tablet, Fire TV and other smart TVs.

OxygenOS 10.5.10 for the OnePlus 8 Pro fixes the Photochrom filter’s see-through issue

The OnePlus 8 Pro’s camera setup has been in the center of controversy of its own and this controversy actually has nothing really to do with the primary camera. Instead, it focuses on the auxiliary color filter camera, which was said to create the Photochrom filter. This secondary camera was written off entirely in early reviews, but was later found to be capable of seeing through thin plastic objects and very thin clothing too! Consequently, the camera was disabled in the next updates — first in China, and then even on global variants. The device even went on sale in India with the color filter camera disabled out of the box! The drama may be coming to an end as OnePlus has apparently “fixed” the Photochrom filter’s see-through issue with the OxygenOS 10.5.10 update — but there’s still a catch.

OnePlus 8 XDA Forums || OnePlus 8 Pro XDA Forums

OxygenOS 10.5.10 is rolling out for OnePlus 8 Pro users in Europe, and it brings along an “adjustment” for the Photochrom filter, seemingly patching the see-through capabilities of the sensor. But as multiple users on the XDA forums and on Twitter have spotted, OnePlus’s fix actually ports over the Photochrom filter to the wide-angle camera instead of utilizing the dedicated color filter camera hardware.

The end result is that users do get the Photochrom filter functionality back and it no longer can see through object layers. Win-win? But at the same time, this also places OnePlus into a conundrum: if the feature was possible through the wide-angle camera, what is the purpose of including a redundant camera sensor inside phones when space is an extreme premium? Further, can this feature also be ported over to other OnePlus devices that lack the dedicated camera filter hardware but still have the wide-angle camera? One can argue that the end-result of the filter is just novelty, but having an option to use it would still be appreciated by all.

Changelog for OxygenOS 10.5.10

Microsoft Surface Duo V2 enters early development as Microsoft acquires local operations of Movial

At the Microsoft Surface event in October last year, Microsoft first showcased its dual-screen Android device — the Microsoft Surface Duo. The device is expected to launch later this summer and, so far, we’ve learned a little about its software and hardware specifications. While Microsoft has still not announced a launch date for its foldable Android device, a recent report from WindowsCentral suggests that the company has already started work on the next-gen model.

The report primarily talks about Microsoft’s recent acquisition of Movial — a software, services, and design engineering company that was working on the software experience for Microsoft’s first foldable Android device. As part of the acquisition, Microsoft has taken hold of Movial’s local operations in Romania, Taiwan, and the USA, and is bringing on board all Movial employees who worked on the Surface Duo as full-time employees at Microsoft.

However, Movial will continue to operate as a standalone company, with employees at its headquarters in Finland remaining at Movial. A report from SeeNews adds that Movial’s Iași office will become Microsoft Romania’s fourth research and development center, and the company will onboard 60 Movial employees from that location.

With the acquisition, Microsoft aims to bring the OS development for the Surface Duo in-house and provide timely updates following the launch of the device. The report further adds that the same team will also handle the Android OS work for the Surface Duo V2, which, according to unnamed sources, is already in the early stages of development. However, the report reveals no further information about the second-gen foldable device.

For the unaware, the Surface Duo is expected to launch with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chip, coupled with 6GB of RAM, and up to 256GB of storage. Leaks suggest that the device will feature an 11MP camera with two 5.6-inch AMOLED displays. We also have reason to believe that the Surface Duo won’t include 5G support, wireless charging, or NFC capabilities. While we’ve not heard anything from Microsoft regarding the pricing, the device will most likely fall in the premium smartphone segment.

OnePlus Nord will launch on July 21 through an AR launch event

The OnePlus Nord is the next smartphone from OnePlus, coming in to resuscitate the brand’s presence in the more affordable segments of the smartphone market in Europe and India. It has been five years since the launch of the OnePlus X, the company’s first phone outside of the flagship space and the Nord is expected to come in and provide more options to consumers looking to buy a new smartphone. Now, OnePlus has officially announced that they will be launching the OnePlus Nord on July 21 through the world’s first AR smartphone launch.

OnePlus Nord XDA Forums

Spicing up online launches is not entirely new to OnePlus, as we have seen the company hold a virtual, VR launch for the OnePlus 2 back in 2015. With the Nord, OnePlus will pivot to AR for the launch and provide users a different kind of hands-on experience with the device.

OnePlus Nord represents a new beginning for OnePlus, giving us an opportunity to share our technology with more people around the world. For this launch, we want everyone to sit back, relax, and experience our new phone for the first time right in the comfort of their living room. We feel that introducing this phone in a more personal and intimate way perfectly reflects our ambition to make the OnePlus experience more accessible to users.

Paul Yu, Head of OnePlus Nord

To experience the launch, download the OnePlus Nord AR App from the Play Store or the App Store. Install and launch the app to grant it requisite permissions for the AR experience and to complete the avatar setup. On launch day, i.e. on July 21 at 10 AM EDT/7.30 PM IST, launch the app and follow the on-screen instructions to start the immersive AR experience.

OnePlus has also created a physical AR invitation that will give users a unique hands-on experience of the OnePlus Nord. OnePlus has not yet shared how to receive the physical invitation, but you would need to scan the QR code on the physical invitation to begin the AR hands-on experience. We reckon that the experience would open up to other users too, perhaps at a later date.

The OnePlus Nord has been confirmed to come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G SoC. The camera setup on the phone will have OIS. Further details have not yet been confirmed, but we expect more to be revealed in the coming days.

Smartphones are firmly entrenched in our daily lives. We wake up and reach for our phones immediately. A quick trip to the bathroom becomes a gaming session. PUBG Mobile’s new Livik map introduces shorter 15-minute, 52-player matches

PUBG Mobile is typically always a step behind the desktop version of the game when it comes to introducing new changes and features. While the mobile game does offer its own unique set of features, any major additions almost always make an appearance on the desktop version first. For instance, the changes to the Miramar map, the new canted sight attachment, and the 2.7x scope for the Win94 rifle that were released with PUBG Mobile 0.18.0 earlier this year in May had been available on the desktop version for quite a while. However, that’s set to change with the latest update for PUBG Mobile, as Tencent has added a brand new map to the game that isn’t available on the desktop version yet.

The latest update for PUBG Mobile (v0.19.0) has started rolling out to players via the Google Play Store and it introduces a new 2km x 2km Nordic-style map called Livik for shorter 15-minute, 52-player matches. The update also kicks off Royale Pass Season 14 of the game, introduces Spark the Flame-themed game mode, The Ancient Secret mode, and much more. Here are some of the most noteworthy changes in the latest update:

  • New Livik Map
    • The Livik map is now available. This Nordic-style map measures 2km x 2km, with 52 players and 15 minute match times, making for a faster and more exciting experience! Livik is still in its BETA stage, and we will continue to adjust and improve it for the best visual and gaming experience.
      PUBG Mobile Livik 1
    • Map exclusive firearms
      • Map-exclusive SMG: P90
        PUBG Mobile Livik P90
      • Map-exclusive marksman rifle: MK 12
    • New vehicle
      • Map-exclusive vehicle: Monster Truck
    • Livik super firearm training (coming soon)
      • When the event starts, Experimental Trial Weapon Crates containing a special weapon will appear on Livik. Special weapons look similar to normal weapons, but there are differences in the names, icons, etc. Finishes can be used normally on both types.
      • Experimental Trial Weapons have slightly better stats than normal weapons. You can view your firing and hit stats with your Experimental Trial Weapon after leaving combat.
  • Spark the Flame-themed Gameplay- The Themed mode will be available on Erangel and Miramar maps in Classic Mode. Players have a chance to enter this mode after selecting these maps.
    • Small Statue- Burns up after interaction. Drops supplies and event items after burning.
    • Giant Statue- Has multiple construction stages that change as the themed event progresses. It burns in the final stage.
    • Statue Camp- There are tens around the statue. Enter them to search for supplies.
  • The Ancient Secret (coming soon)- This themed mode takes effect on Erangel and Miramar when activated. Players can choose whether to participate via settings on the Mode Selection screen.
    • Ancient Temple- Large, major building with a two-story structure. It initially sits on the ground, but it starts to float in the air after a fixed period of time and moves slowly with the playzone.
    • Slate puzzle- An interactive puzzle made up of ancient slates.
    • Boss fight- Players who make it to the sealed room on the second floor of the Ancient Secret can challenge the boss of the temple and win great rewards.
    • Small ruins- Small, randomly-appearing ruins with crates and puzzles.
  • Season Warm-up Event Gameplay- At the end of Season 13, a season warm-up event will be available for a limited time. After joining the event, players will battle in 4-player teams in Classic Mode (unranked) and can complete missions to earn a small amount of Season 14 ranking points, which will be converted into Season 14 rating points after the update of Season 14.
  • Adjustment of Mode Availability Times- After the version update, Payload and RageGear modes will only be available during the weekend, and Bluehole Mode will no longer be available.
  • Arena Gameplay: New Arena Gameplay- Team Gun Game (Available on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from July 31st)
    • 4v4 match- The starting weapons are the same, but can be upgraded by defeating opponents. The winner is the first team to use the final weapon, the Pan, to defeat the opponents (or the team with the highest score when time runs out).
    • New Map- Library. The first0-ever indoor map, with a symmetrical layout and three assault routes: left, right, and center. Take positions on platforms, in doorways, or behind bookshelves depending on your current weapon. This gives players with different styles a fighting chance.
    • New Arena Attachment- Now Loadout attachment: Barrel Extender. This is a muzzle attachment that can be used with the vast majority of Sniper Rifles, Rifles, and SMGs. It increases the firearm’s effective range and reduces the damage reduction of bullets due to distance.

Along with the aforementioned features, the update brings quite a few gameplay changes that can be found in the official patch notes linked below. Additionally, players who install the new update before July 13th will receive 2,88 BP, 100 AG, and a three-day Nightmare Helmet reward. In case you haven’t updated the game yet, you can follow the Play Store link below and download the latest PUBG Mobile update to receive these rewards.
