Call of Duty: Mobile Season 8 update brings new Highrise map, Juggernaut multiplayer mode, and Katana operator skill

Call of Duty – the popular first-person shooter franchise by Activision – was made available on Android and iOS in 2019 featuring battle royale and fast-paced team deathmatch modes. Call of Duty: Mobile has received a couple of updates over the last several months following its release, adding a slew of new maps and modes to keep users engaged in the gameplay. Tencent’s TiMi Studios – the developer behind COD Mobile – has now released another major update to the game bringing a new Highrise map, Katana operator skill, and Juggernaut multiplayer mode along with Battle Pass Season 8 “The Forge,” that is filled with characters, events, and items with a post-apocalyptic theme.

Highrise Map

The first notable addition is the new Highrise map with several points of counterattack at a construction site on top of a skyscraper. Highrise a mid-sized map with a mix of office buildings, closed quarters, and open rooftops including a helipad. The multi-floor layout and intricate placement of objects make the Highrise map engaging. It is available for a variety of modes including Attack of the Undead, Kill Confirmed, Team Death Match, Search & Destroy, Domination, as well as the new Juggernaut mode.

Juggernaut mode

Taking about Juggernaut, this mode brings a 5 vs 1 gameplay in which five players combine forces to bring down one mighty Juggernaut. The player to annihilate the Juggernaut takes its place and becomes the Juggernaut itself while the remaining players try to take it down. The first player to reach the score limit wins the match. Katana operator skill

The third major feature that Call of Duty: Mobile gets with the update is the Katana operator skill that lets you wield the traditional Japanese sword in samurai style. The skill can be activated even through smoke and a single melee attack is enough to strike the enemy down. For the duration that the Katana operator is active, players will go into a third-person view but without any impact on the general vulnerability towards gunshots or any other form of ballistics.

New weapon, Battle Pass benefits, and more

In addition to these changes, the update brings a new short-to-mid range assault rifle, the DR-H, with high damage but high recoil. The update also brings a bunch of new skins, both – common and rare – with the new Season 8 Battle Pass. As usual, there is a variety of items that can be won in the free as well as the paid versions of the Battle pass in Call of Duty: Mobile.

Gboard prepares a Google Lens shortcut, dark/light themes that follow system, and Google Assistant dictation support

Google’s Gboard is among the most popular keyboard apps and is constantly updated with new features. Recently, Google added support for Android 11’s emojis on Gboard, just a week after activating Smart Compose predictions messaging apps. Now, Google is preparing to add a Google Lens shortcut, Google Assistant dictation, and support for automatic switching between light and dark themes on Gboard.

An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.

We spotted references to the features coming to Gboard version 9.6.3 beta that came in earlier this week adding with Android 11’s emoji. The following new strings were found part of the latest beta version of the Gboard app, hinting at new dictation feature possibly to replace the current voice typing feature:

In addition to the typing with Google Assistant, Google is also adding a new “Default Black” theme to complement the “Default White” theme. 9to5Google showcased this by reverse-engineering the newly added features in the latest build. The new black theme comes without the colored enter key and may receive a “System Auto” feature in the theme to switch between the Default Light and Dark themes automatically.

In addition, Google is adding Google Sans font to replace Roboto on the letter keys in Gboard.

9to5Google also highlighted the new shortcut for Google Lens and Google Assistant in the shortcuts row above the numbers row on Gboard. As per their report, the Google Lens shortcut only launches the app and there is no deeper integration for it. Meanwhile, the Assistant shortcut, which has been in works since Gboard 8.5 from last year, is still inactive. However, as the above set of strings spotted by us may suggest, the feature may finally start working soon.

[Update: Screenshots] Google Chrome’s media controls can soon be popped out into a floating overlay

Google has been working on revamped media controls for Chrome for a while now, and they recently went live in the Stable version earlier this year. The global media controls allow you to manage whatever media is playing right from the toolbar instead of navigating away from your current tab to the tab/window that’s playing the media. Soon, it looks like those media controls will get even handier.

Recently, a feature request for the global media controls was picked up and added to the Chromium code. The request simply states: “Add ability to drag a notification out of the dialog.” This would make it possible to detach the controls from the toolbar and put them anywhere on the screen. The request goes on to explain: “We want the user to be able to click and drag a notification out of the media dialog and into an always-on-top overlay.”

The second part of the description is key as it will allow the controls to stay on top. This is important because otherwise, you would have to keep opening the global media controls every time you wanted to control media playback since the controls lose focus when you click away right now. The code for this feature has already been added to Chrome, and there will be a flag that will soon be able to enable this feature on the Canary channel. The flag can be found at chrome://flags/#global-media-controls.

If you’re someone that keeps a lot of tabs open (which most of us probably are), Chrome’s media controls are a real time saver. Having the shortcut in the toolbar means you never have to worry about which tab is playing media. Putting the controls in a floating window saves you from that extra click. Is it a huge deal? Maybe not, but it’s a nice option. We look forward to seeing the feature rollout.

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S7 and Tab S7+ tablets leak online in new images

Despite the global decline in tablet sales, Samsung is still indulging in the flagship tablets market. We reviewed the Galaxy Tab S6 last year and hailed it the “the best tablet Android has to offer.” Samsung has been preparing to upgrade the tablet with the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 that comes in two sizes this time; the 11-inch model is likely to be called the Galaxy Tab S7 and the bigger 12.4-inch model the Tab S7+. We’ve also seen digital renders of the Galaxy Tab S7 duo and learned about the 120Hz display that the tablets will sport in response to the iPad Pro. Now, a series of recent leaks reveal marketing and live images of the tablets while another gives us an insight into their specifications.

Starting with the images first, we have images from the certification of the Galaxy Tab S7+ (model number SM-T976N) by the Safety Korea certification body via Twitter user @_the_tech_guy. The image from the front of the tablet discloses bezels of the same size as the Galaxy Tab S6 and a camera placed along the longer edge of the device so that you can use the tablet for video calls while continuing to use the tablet in landscape mode.

The image from the back of the tablet shows dual cameras, a magnetic strip to hold the S Pen stylus, and an AKG branding, confirming that the speakers will be tuned by the sound engineering company that is now owned by Samsung.

Seasoned leaker Evan Blass (also known as @evleaks) also shared an image of the Galaxy Tab S7 that appears to be from the marketing collaterals for the tablet. The image, however, does not accompany any claim from the leaker about the specifications.

Meanwhile, SamMobile does report the specifications of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+ will include the recently announced Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus mobile platform. The chipset will be complemented by 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage along with a microSD card slot for expanding it further. The 5G variant of the Galaxy Tab S7+ will only support sub-6GHz 5G signals.

The 12.4-inch AMOLED display on the Galaxy Tab S7+ will bear a resolution of 2800 x 1752 pixels and also feature an in-display fingerprint scanner like the previous generation. Additionally, the S Pen will come with improved responsiveness and pointer functionality just like the upcoming Galaxy Note 20 series. Furthermore, there will be a huge 10,090mAh battery with support for fast charging at up to 45W.

The tablet will be equipped with the same 13MP+5MP camera setup on the back and 8MP on the front. It is expected to run Samsung’s One UI 2.5 on top of Android 10.

It is reasonable to expect that Samsung will launch the Galaxy Tab S7 and the S7+ at the Samsung Unpacked event in August where it reveals the Note 20 trio. However, Vietnamese tipster @Boby25846908 suggests that the Galaxy Tab S7+ and the Watch 3 will be launched at a separate event two weeks after the Unpacked gala. We’ll update you with more information once we learn about Samsung’s plans.

Samsung’s bean-shaped Galaxy Buds Live TWS earbuds leak in three colors

Samsung has been in the truly wireless (TWS) earbuds segment for a few years now. The Galaxy Buds+ was also one of Samsung’s better-received products in this segment, winning over as a product that can be easily recommended to most consumers and improving upon its predecessor in just the right ways. That makes us excited for what Samsung has in store for the successor, the bean-shaped Samsung Galaxy Buds Live. We already have a fairly good idea of what the Buds Live will look like thanks to early renders, and now we get to take a look at some more color options.

Samsung Galaxy Buds+ Review: The Meaningful Increment

The bean shape of the Samsung Galaxy Buds Live is no real secret by now. In the picture above, shared by Evan ‘evleaks’ Blass on his Patreon, we see the Buds Live’s outward-facing shell and the two microphone holes, along with another grilled opening that we are unable to properly explain yet. The earbuds are expected to come with Active Noise Cancellation, so these could be for enabling an Ambient Sound mode. Unlike the previous iterations, the compact design of the upcoming earbuds will sit more flush in the user’s ears and won’t protrude out as much. The earbuds are expected to measure in at just 2.8cm, making them a bit more comfortable and easier to use, especially for people will small ears. However, the new design might have some adverse effects on sound isolation as the earbuds don’t have any silicone components to ensure a proper seal.

Next, we get our first look at the earbuds inside their case. Unlike the pill-shaped case that Samsung used for the Buds and Buds+, the Samsung Galaxy Buds Live has a more squared case. The lid also gets a rubber strip. Other than the shape, there aren’t any major changes in the design.

The Samsung Galaxy Buds Live are expected to be unveiled at Samsung Unpacked on August 5, 2020, alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Z Fold 2, Galaxy Tab S7, and the Galaxy Watch 3.

The LG Velvet’s new UI is coming to 6 other LG smartphones

The LG Velvet is one of the company’s most exciting devices in a while, and that largely revolves around the brand new design. While the hardware shows the most drastic change, LG has also refreshed its software for the Velvet. The company has now announced that 6 older smartphones will be getting the updated UI as well.

Admittedly, the LG Velvet’s UI is not a super drastic change from LG UXs of the past. They’re now calling it “Velvet UI,” and what’s changed includes a few new things like notification bar color customization, volume adjustment settings, and a new pop-up window during a call. This new UI will be brought to 6 of LG’s latest premium devices in Korea:

Unfortunately, LG did not share any plans to bring Velvet UI to older LG phones outside of Korea. The list of devices does include some from as far back as 2018, which is a positive sign for LG’s commitment to older devices. The company hasn’t had the best track record when it comes to supporting old devices with software updates. OnePlus 7T series gets a new OxygenOS beta with new Clock and Game Space features

It’s time for another OxygenOS Open Beta update for the OnePlus 7T series. The last beta update rolled out in early June with some nice additions. This latest update has a pretty nice list of quality of life improvements. The headliners are an optimized adaptive brightness curve, new Clock features, and some Game Space additions.
