Samsung app confirms Galaxy Watch 3 hand gestures, fall detection, and more

Earlier today, Samsung released the Galaxy Buds Live Plugin app to the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, confirming a few new features about the Galaxy Buds Live. Just a few hours later, Samsung released the Galaxy Watch 3 Plugin app. On the surface, the release of this plugin doesn’t reveal much information, but I decoded the APK’s resources to unearth a few new and exciting features coming to the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3.

The first and most interesting new feature is support for hand gestures. In particular, clenching and unclenching your fist can answer a phone call. If you get a phone call, just clench your fist and then unclench, and the watch will answer the call. Because the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 has a speaker, you’ll be able to take the call on the watch itself as well. If you are getting a phone call you don’t want to answer, you can just shake your hand to ignore the call.

Another new gesture is related to screen capture. Taking screenshots isn’t new functionality on the Galaxy Watch smartwatches, but the way to take them will be changing on the Galaxy Watch 3. Previously, you would have to hold the bottom button while swiping left at the same time to take a screen capture. Now, Samsung is just letting you press both side buttons at the same time to take a screenshot.

A great health and safety feature that Samsung is adding is fall detection. Fall detection on the Galaxy Watch 3 will work in a similar manner as the current SOS mode. When you fall, the smartwatch will ring for 60 seconds. If you don’t respond, it will text your location and a 5-second sound recording to your emergency contacts. There is also an option for placing an SOS call when you fall. For this, you will need to enter your own emergency contacts.

Along with these new features, I was also able to find all the default watch face options that will come with the new Samsung Galaxy Watch 3. A few of these actually include the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 20 wallpapers. A gallery with all the new watch faces is shown below.

All of these new features are great additions to Samsung’s smartwatch lineup, and we can expect a bunch more to be unveiled with the release of the new watch next month. The Galaxy Watch 3 is expected to be announced at Samsung Unpacked on August 5th, and we should expect it to be available for sale shortly thereafter. I’m personally very excited about the new Galaxy Watch 3 and everything else rumored to be announced at Samsung Unpacked on August 5th. You’ll be able to watch the unveiling on Samsung’s YouTube channel, but we will, of course, cover the launch here at XDA.

[Update 2: Live in US] Samsung is planning to offer a debit card this summer

Update 2 (7/24/20 @ 1:00 PM ET): The Samsung Money debit card is now live in the U.S. for Samsung Pay users.

Update (5/27/20 @ 9:55 AM ET): The Samsung Money debit card is now official and the company has shared more information about it.

Samsung is the latest tech company looking to get into the personal finance game. According to Samsung, the company is planning to introduce a debit card for Samsung Pay this summer. The card will be backed by SoFi, an online personal finance company that has gained traction in the last five years.

Tech companies getting into personal finance is becoming a trend. The Apple Card is a credit card that was launched in 2019, whereas Google’s rumored to be working on a debit card of its own. Samsung’s plan is more in line with what we’re hearing about Google’s plan. The Samsung debit card will be tied into Samsung Pay and offer users more ways to manage money.

Samsung Pay was launched in 2015 and it allows select Galaxy devices to pay at virtually any terminal thanks to Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST). In contrast, platforms such as Google Pay and Apple Pay only use NFC for payments. To date, Samsung Pay has been about mobile payments and rewards, but the introduction of the debit card will bring new money management tools to the service as well.

This announcement comes as Samsung celebrates 5 years of Samsung Pay. The company says they will have more information to share in the coming weeks. What do you think of the idea of a Samsung debit card? Is this something you’re interested in?

Update: Official

Earlier this month, Samsung revealed it would be releasing a debit card in the coming weeks. The time has come for the full unveiling and that debit card is officially called “Samsung Money by Sofi.” It’s a Mastercard issued by The Bancorp Bank and it ties into Samsung Pay, as expected.

The Samsung Money debit card comes with a cash management account and no account fees and higher interest than the national average. The key here is the Samsung Pay integration, though. Users can apply for the card directly in the Samsung Pay app and they can use it digitally before the physical card arrives. Samsung Pay is where users can check their balance, see a timeline of purchases, freeze the card, and flag charges.

All of that, however, is pretty standard stuff. There are a few Samsung-centric features as well. The Samsung Money debit card earns Samsung Rewards points, which can be redeemed on purchases of Samsung products. The company is also promising that accounts will be FDIC insured for up to $1.5 million, which is 6 times higher than most debit cards. The SoFi partnership also allows Samsung Money users to access 5,000 ATMs in the Allpoint ATM network without any charges.

The card is launching later this summer and people can sign up here for the waitlist.

Update 2: Live in US

Starting today (June 24), customers in the US can sign up for Samsung’s debit card. The Samsung Money card works in partnership through SoFi and it’s a Mastercard. Samsung will be offering discounts on its upcoming products for Samsung Money card users. Samsung Pay users can sign up for the card right now in the “Money” tab of the app. Visit the link right here to learn more about signing up.

YouTube Music is now available on Android TV through the YouTube app

Google is slowly but surely getting ready to shut down Play Music and YouTube Music is the replacement for better or worse. The company has been adding features to bring YTM up to speed with GPM, but there are still plenty of ways in which it lags behind. Android TV support is one of those, and Google has solved this in a strange way.

Rather than launch a dedicated YouTube Music app for Android TV, Google is baking it into the existing YouTube app. A server-side update has added a new “Music” tab to the sidebar of the YouTube app on Android TV. This tab includes the typical YouTube recommendations along with content from your Music account. It’s not an ideal implementation.

The tab shows your likes and playlists from other users, your mixes, genre and mood stations, your own personal playlists, artist stations, and recommended playlists. However, there’s a lot that is lacking due to the YouTube app not being a music player. Background playback is not available, meaning you can’t leave the app. There’s no shuffle or repeat options or toggle to switch between audio and video. You can’t do any managing of your playlists. No access to your full library or uploaded music.

Unsurprisingly, a video app isn’t great at being a music player. Honestly, you’re better off simply casting YouTube Music from your phone to your Android TV. Hopefully, this implementation is just a hold-over until a full standalone app is released.

NVIDIA GeForce NOW adds 9 games including FTL, Subnautica: Below Zero, and SUPERHOT: MIND CONTROL DELETE

NVIDIA opened up its GeForce NOW game-streaming service for all users earlier this year in February. Since then, the company has been adding new titles to the list of games available for subscribers each week. NVIDIA has already added new games to the list thrice this month, with the previous update bringing titles like Hyper Scape beta, Death Stranding, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint, Far Cry Primal, and more. This week, NVIDIA is adding nine new titles to the streaming service, including FTL: Faster Than Light, Subnautica: Below Zero, SUPERHOT: MIND CONTROL DELETE, and more.

There are the nine titles that have made their way to NVIDIA GeForce NOW this week:

  • Steam:
    • Rock of Ages 3: Make & Break
    • SUPERHOT: MIND CONTROL DELETE
    • Supreme Commander 2
    • The Wind Road
  • Epic Game Store:
    • Rogue Company
    • Tacoma
    • FTL: Faster Than Light
    • Steep (also available on Uplay)
    • Subnautica: Below Zero

Out of the aforementioned titles, Rock of Ages 3: Make & Break and Rogue Company are new titles that have just been released on Steam and the Epic Games Store, respectively. It’s also worth noting that Tacoma, an adventure title from 2017, is available for free on the Epic Games Store until July 30th. Along with the addition of new titles, NVIDIA has also added highlights support for popular MOBA Dota 2, which will let users easily capture highlights from the game. Follow this link for a full list of titles that support NVIDIA Highlights.

Here are all the previous title additions to NVIDIA GeForce NOW:

NVIDIA GeForce NOW incorporates technology that utilizes AI and RTX GPUs to enable “the next generation of performance and visuals.” It’s NVIDIA’s improved deep learning neural network that “boosts frame rates while generating beautiful, sharp images for games”. Since the base technology is game streaming, games begin playing instantly when you fire them up. They also include an experience that has been optimized for cloud gaming and includes Game Ready Driver performance improvements, managed directly by NVIDIA.

OxygenOS hints at a new “Gray Ash” color for the OnePlus Nord

Just in case you’ve been living under a rock these past few days, the OnePlus Nord is finally here. The Snapdragon 765G laden smartphone features a 90Hz AMOLED display panel with an in-display fingerprint scanner, 30W fast Warp Charge technology, 5G support – basically a bunch of good attributes under a very attractive price tag. At launch, the company decided to offer the Nord only in two color variants, namely “Blue Marble” and “Gray Onyx”. As it turns out, OnePlus may have another color in the works, although we are not sure whether they have any plan to release it soon or reserve it for a special occasion.

OnePlus Nord XDA Forums

XDA Senior Member and our trusted OnePlus tipster Some_Random_Username has discovered the hint about a third color variant of the OnePlus Nord while analyzing the Engineering Mode app. For those not familiar with this particular app, it’s pre-installed on every OnePlus phone running OxygenOS. The Qualcomm-made app got massive attention from the Android community back in 2017 due to a privilege escalation backdoor, albeit the sole purpose of it is to assist OEM engineers in hardware testing.

Hands-on with the OnePlus Nord: The true OnePlus X successor

Upon dissecting the latest version of the Engineering Mode app present in the newer OxygenOS builds, Some_Random_Username has spotted the following strings:

<string name="str_sm7250_color0_title">Gray Onyx</string>
<string name="str_sm7250_color1_title">Blue Marble</string>
<string name="str_sm7250_color2_title">Gray Ash</string>

The sm7250 portion corresponds to the model name for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765/765G/768 SoCs, but we are more interested in the color names. As we mentioned earlier, the first 2 colors in this list have been released, but the “Gray Ash” one has certainly not. What’s more interesting is that the existence of the third color does line up with details from a leaked slide that notable leaker Evan Blass published before the Nord’s launch.

Notice “Gray Ash” as one of the color options

Unlike the flagship OnePlus 8 series, the OnePlus Nord has no carrier-exclusive model as of now. It’s possible that “Gray Ash” may be the exclusive color for an upcoming carrier launch, but that’s just our speculation at this moment.

OnePlus Camera 5.4.23 hints at 64MP photo support, possibly for the OnePlus 8T

Now that OnePlus is done with the launch of the OnePlus Nord, the company seems to have started prepping up for the launch of its next-gen flagships — the OnePlus 8T and OnePlus 8T Pro. The upcoming devices are expected to launch sometime later this year and, according to new strings discovered in the latest update for the OnePlus Camera app, they might feature a 64MP primary sensor.

A teardown of the OnePlus Camera app (v5.4.23) has unearthed new strings of code that hint at 64MP photo support. Since both OnePlus flagships from earlier this year feature a 48MP primary sensor, we believe that the company might be prepping up OxygenOS‘s stock camera app for its next-gen flagships.

<string name="full_size_picutre_disabled_burst_shot_64mp">Burst is disabled while using 64MP</string>
<string name="full_size_picutre_disabled_hint_64mp">16MP offers better dynamic range (Recommend)</string>
<string name="full_size_picutre_enabled_hint_64mp">64MP offers higher resolution and captures details in well lit scenes</string>
<string name="action_item_picture_format_jpg_64MP">JPG 64MP</string>
<string name="content_description_64mp">64MP</string>

The strings reveal that the OnePlus Camera app has received support for a new 64MP camera mode, which “offers higher resolution and captured details in well lit scenes.” The code further reveals that burst capture will be disabled while using the 64MP mode and that the camera app will recommend using the lower resolution 16MP mode for better dynamic range. The 16MP default mode further confirms that the new feature has been added in preparation for an upcoming device, as the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro capture 12MP photos by default.

As of now, we’ve not seen any leaks or rumors about OnePlus’ next-gen flagship devices. The company typically launches its T-series devices towards the end of the third quarter or early in the fourth quarter each year, and we should start seeing more details about the OnePlus 8T and 8T Pro in the coming weeks.
