Unofficial builds of TWRP and OmniROM are now available for the Motorola Moto G8 Power

Back in February, Motorola refreshed its Moto G lineup by launching a pair of Qualcomm Snapdragon 665-powered smartphones. The Lenovo-owned brand dropped the numeric identifier from the names of these two phones in some regions, e.g. the “Moto G8 Power” launched as the “Moto G Power” in the U.S. To make things further complicated, Motorola maintains two different sets of firmware packages for the Moto G Power (code-name “sofia”) and the Moto G8 Power (code-name “sofiar”). The whole situation is certainly a bit chaotic for aftermarket development on these phones, but XDA’s brilliant developer community has managed to kickstart the journey anyway. Here is our first custom development roundup for the Moto G(8)Power.

Unofficial OmniROM 10

XDA Recognized Developer vache has come up with a source-built version of OmniROM for the Moto G8 Power. Despite being in an early stage of development, the custom ROM is surprisingly stable and most of the basic features work flawlessly. You don’t need to flash Google Apps separately, however, the ROM package must be flashed via Fastboot interface. Head over to the forum thread linked below and follow the instructions in the first post to get the ROM up and running on your device.

The current version of the ROM may not work properly on the Moto G Power, due to the fact that the developer has yet to offer a unified build.

Unofficial TWRP

An unofficial build of TWRP is also available for download, courtesy of the same developer. Unlike the aforementioned OmniROM build, the custom recovery image is compatible with both the Moto G8 Power and the Moto G Power. You should be able to boot it on the Moto G Stylus (code-name “sofiap”) and the Moto G Pro (code-name “sofiap_ao”) as well.

NVIDIA brings GeForce NOW game streaming to Chromebooks

Chromebooks are usually seen as cheap cloud-centric productivity devices, and that is true for the most part. One of the main draws on a Chromebook is the fact that most activities rely on an active internet connection, letting users do more through the cloud rather than their own hardware. Cloud gaming just makes sense on a Chromebook, though services have been surprisingly slow in bringing over adoption. NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW game streaming left beta in February 2020, with a promise to come to Chromebooks “later this year”. NVIDIA is now following up on this promise by adding Chromebook support to GeForce NOW.

GeForce NOW is arriving on Chromebooks in beta, joining users on other platforms like PC, Mac, SHIELD, and Android. Users interested in gaming on a Chromebook need to head on over to the website and log in with their account. They can either choose from a paid Founders membership or a free account. And that’s about it, as game streaming from that point onwards is just a few clicks to select the game that you want to play. You can select from games present on the digital stores like Steam, Epic Games Store, and Ubisoft Uplay. NVIDIA also supports Steam Sync, so you can sync your Steam library onto GeForce NOW, and NVIDIA states that this feature will be coming to Chromebook too, soon, alongside the Highlights feature.

The combination of Chromebooks and cloud gaming is perfect. Chromebooks by very nature are cloud-centric devices, and usually come with low-powered hardware. This hardware humility helps keep the cost down and does not impede productivity by a large margin as most tasks are offloaded to the cloud. The addition of a game streaming service, GeForce NOW in this case, massively helps improve the arguments towards a Chromebook versus a traditional laptop. For the best gaming experience though, we’d recommend at least using a mouse.

Redmi K30 Ultra and Motorola Moto G8 kernel sources are now available

General Public License v2 gives end users the freedom to ask the Android OEMs to provide the source code of any Linux kernel binaries they have shipped on devices they sell. To comply with the legal obligation, most companies nowadays publish kernel sources sometime after their devices hit the market. Xiaomi, for example, used to be one of the worst offenders of GPLv2, but the situation has been greatly improved over the past few years. The Chinese OEM has now released kernel sources for the recently launched Redmi K30 Ultra.

Featuring the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 Plus SoC, the 5G capable Redmi K30 Ultra packs in some impressive specifications, such as a 120Hz AMOLED display, a 20MP pop-up camera, and a 4,500 mAh battery that is 33W fast charge ready. On the software side, the phone comes running Android 10 with MIUI 12 on top. While the Redmi K30 Ultra (codename “cezanne”) may not be launched outside China, it is good to see that Xiaomi has managed to minimize the delay posting kernel source codes for newer devices.

Motorola, meanwhile, has also published the kernel source codes for the Moto G8 (codename “rav”). The Qualcomm Snapdragon 665-powered phone comes with a triple rear camera setup, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. As a matter of fact, Motorola decided to rebrand the Moto G8 as Moto G Fast for the U.S., thus the Android 10-based source code linked below should be compatible with both of them.

A kernel source release with a proper commit history is quite helpful for the aftermarket development community. The modders can fiddle with the code and improve the overall performance of the respective device by tuning the stock kernel. Moreover, such source codes also serve as the foundation of building custom recoveries and ROMs for the device.

Moto E7 Plus and OPPO A53 leaked specs reveal the first phones with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 460

Leaked specifications of the upcoming Moto E7 Plus and OPPO A53 reveal that the devices will be the first to feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 460 chipset, which was announced earlier this year in January. The Snapdragon 460 chipset was unveiled alongside two mid-range chips — the Snapdragon 720G and Snapdragon 662. While we’ve already seen the Snapdragon 720G make an appearance on the POCO M2 Pro, OEMs are yet to launch a device featuring the other two chipsets.

However, a recent tweet from renowned leakster Evan Blass (@evleaks) reveals that Motorola is gearing up to launch the Moto E7 Plus, which will feature the Snapdragon 460 chip. The tweet in question includes an image that highlights some of the other specifications that we will see in Motorola’s next budget device. Unlike the recently launched Moto E 2020, the Moto E7 Plus will include a 5,000mAh battery, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of onboard storage, and a 48MP dual camera setup with night vision.

Along with the Moto E7 Plus, the Snapdragon 460 chipset will make an appearance on the upcoming OPPO A53. According to a recent report from MySmartPrice, the OPPO A53 recently made an appearance on several certification websites, giving us the first look at its specifications. As mentioned earlier, the device will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 460 chip, coupled with up to 6GB of RAM and up to 128GB of onboard storage.

The certification listings further reveal that the OPPO A53 will feature a 6.5-inch 90Hz LCD display, a 5,000mAh battery, a 16MP selfie camera, a 13MP primary camera on the back, a 2MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth sensor. The device will also include a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and it will support 18W fast wired charging. As of now, we have no information from Motorola or OPPO regarding the launch timeline for these devices.

Realme C12 and Realme C15 with MediaTek’s Helio G35 SoC, 6000mAh battery launched in India

Following the launch of the Realme C11 earlier this year in June, Chinese OEM Realme has now launched two new budget devices in India — the Realme C12 and Realme C15. The latest devices in Realme’s C series feature MediaTek’s Helio G35 chipset, coupled with up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage. The devices follow the same design language that Realme introduced with the C11, featuring a square camera module on the back and a textured geometric finish.

The latest budget devices from Realme feature 6.5-inch HD+ mini-drop displays, with an aspect ratio of  20:9 and 88.7% screen-to-body ratio. Both the devices pack in a massive 6,000mAh battery, with support for 18W fast charging and reverse wired charging. While the new C series devices don’t look to be a massive upgrade over their predecessor, Realme has made some major improvements in the camera department.

The Realme C12 features a triple camera setup, with a 13MP primary camera, a 2MP monochrome sensor, and a 2MP macro camera on the back. Over on the front, the device features a single 5MP selfie shooter. On the other hand, the Realme C15 is the first device in the budget C series that features a quad-camera setup. It includes a 13MP primary camera, an 8MP ultra-wide camera, a 2MP monochrome sensor, and a 2MP retro lens. The device also features an 8MP selfie camera over on the front.

Both the devices run Realme UI based on Android 10, which includes a couple of new battery life optimizations to help the 6,000mAh battery on the devices last even longer.

Realme Buds Classic

Along with the new C series devices, Realme has also launched a new pair of wired earphones called the Realme Buds Classic, which has a half in-ear style design and large 14.2mm drivers. In keeping with its goal of becoming a tech lifestyle brand, the company has also launched a Realme-branded T-shirt for fans.

During the launch event, the company also announced its upcoming Realme Youth Days sale, which will start from August 28th and offer up to 60% discounts on smartphones and accessories from the company.

Pricing & Availability

The new Realme C12 will be available in a single 3GB+32GB configuration, which is priced at ₹8,999 (~$120). The device will go on sale starting from August 24th via the company’s website and Flipkart, and it will be available in offline retail stores starting from August 31st.

The Realme C15, on the other hand, will be available in two RAM+storage configurations — 3GB+32GB and 4GB+64GB. The two variants have been priced at ₹9,999 (~$134) and ₹10,999 (~$147), respectively. The device will go on sale starting from August 27th via the company’s website and Flipkart, and it will be available in offline retail stores from September 3rd. Both the devices will be available in two color variants — Power Blue and Power Silver.

The Realme Buds Classic has been priced at ₹399 (~$5) and will be available for purchase on the company’s website and Amazon.in, starting from August 24th. The earbuds will be available in two color variants — black and white. And finally, the Realme T-shirt has been priced at ₹999 (~$13) and it will be available for purchase exclusively on Realme.com starting September 4th.

Netflix adds multiple Samsung Galaxy and TCL phones to its list of HD and HDR capable devices

In order to stream videos in HD resolution from popular streaming apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, your smartphone needs to have Widewine L1 certification. However, despite Widewine L1 certification, some devices aren’t able to stream HD content on Netflix because the platform also has to manually whitelist devices to enable HD playback support. Over the last few months, Netflix has whitelisted several Samsung devices for HD and HDR10 support. Most recently, the company added the ASUS ZenFone 6, the ASUS ROG Phone II, and TCL 10 series to its HD/HDR supported list. Now, the company has added several more Samsung and TCL devices to the list.

[Update: LineageOS 17.1] Unofficial Pixel Experience and TWRP are already available for the new OnePlus Nord

Third-party development for the OnePlus Nord is on full-swing on our forums, even though it’s just been over a week since the device went on sale. XDA Senior Member Some_Random_Username has already released a guide to root the device using Magisk and now, developers have released unofficial builds of the Pixel Experience custom ROM and TWRP custom recovery for the device.

Unofficial TWRP recovery for the OnePlus Nord

XDA Recognized Developer mauronofrio has released an unofficial build of the TWRP custom recovery (v3.4.0-0) for the OnePlus Nord. You can download and flash the custom recovery on your device by following the instruction in the XDA forums thread linked below, after which you’ll be able to flash a custom ROM on the device. However, since this is an early build of the TWRP recovery, some features don’t work as expected. Here’s a list of all the things that you can and can’t do with the current version of TWRP:

  • TWRP boots
  • Decryption works
  • ROM flashing should work
  • Backups are broken
  • Flash partition is broken for system and vendor
  • Don’t wipe or format system and vendor partitions
  • Format/wipe data is broken

Unofficial Pixel Experience ROM

An unofficial build of the Android 10-based Pixel Experience ROM is now also available for the OnePlus Nord, thanks to XDA Member CryllicBuster273. To install the ROM, you’ll first need to root your OnePlus Nord by following the guide linked above and flash the unofficial TWRP recovery on the device. Then you can follow the instructions in the XDA forum thread linked below to download and flash the ROM. The custom ROM comes with Google apps built-in, so you don’t need to flash a separate GApps package after flashing the ROM.

Unofficial LineageOS 17.1

XDA Recognized Developer lakshay18 has also brought an unofficial build of LineageOS 17.1 to the OnePlus Nord. To install the ROM, you need to be on the latest OxygenOS and then follow the steps mentioned for a fastboot installation as opposed to an installation through TWRP or a different custom recovery.
