OPPO details its stable ColorOS 11 update schedule for January 2021

OPPO unveiled the latest version of its custom skin, ColorOS 11, four months ago. Although the beta version of ColorOS 11 is already available for several OPPO devices to try out, the stable version is only available for only a handful of devices such as the OPPO Find X2 series, F17 Pro, and Reno 4 series. But that should change soon as the company is planning to expand the stable rollout to more OPPO smartphones in the coming weeks.

If you have been wondering when your OPPO phone will receive the stable ColorOS 11 update, we have some good news. OPPO has just shared a timeframe for the next batch of smartphones that will be receiving the stable ColorOS 11 update in the coming days. The update will be based on Android 11 and will be rolling out to OPPO smartphones in India, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Australia.

These are the phones scheduled to receive the stable ColorOS 11 update this month.

Besides sharing a timeline for the stable rollout, OPPO has also shared the list of devices that will be receiving a ColorOS 11 beta in January. As per OPPO’s timeline, the following devices are scheduled to receive a beta update:

ColorOS 11 is a big upgrade over ColorOS 7 and brings along a host of new features and improvements to the table. One of the major highlights of the new version includes an improved dark mode, three-finger translation with Google Lens, new theming options, improvements to Always on Display, FlexDrop, Super Power Saving Mode, Ringtone Maker, and a whole lot more. HMD Global’s Nokia 6.2 successor will retain the headphone jack

After launching the Nokia 2.4, Nokia C1 Plus, and Nokia 5.4 late last year, HMD Global is now gearing up to launch a successor to the Nokia 6.2 from 2019. As per a recent leak, the upcoming device will feature a slightly updated design, a larger display, and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. Much like its predecessor, it will also feature a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The leak in question comes from renowned leaker @OnLeaks, who has also shared some high-res renders of the Nokia 6.2 successor. As you can see in the attached renders, the device will look largely the same, except for some minor changes on the back panel. It will feature a 6.45-inch flat display with a waterdrop-style notch, which is slightly larger than the 6.3-inch panel on the Nokia 6.2. Thanks to the bigger display, the device will have a larger footprint. It will measure 164.9 x 76.8 x 9.2mm.

As far as the changes on the back panel are concerned, the device won’t feature a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. However, it will retain the centered circular camera module. The device will feature a quad-camera setup and, as a result, the LED flash will be moved from inside the camera module to its own dedicated spot underneath it. The fingerprint scanner on the Nokia 6.2 successor will be integrated with the power button on the right edge of the device. The device will also feature a dedicated Google Assistant button on the left edge.

The leak further reveals that the Nokia 6.2 successor will feature a USB Type-C port at the bottom edge, sandwiched between the speaker grille and primary microphone. And it will feature a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top edge. While HMD Global hasn’t released any information about the device so far, the leaker claims that it should launch by April this year. We currently have no information about the device’s marketing name, but it will most likely be called either Nokia 6.3 or Nokia 6.4.

The Acer Nitro XV282K KV is the company’s first 4K UHD, 144Hz, HDR400 monitor with HDMI 2.1

Acer has announced a total of three new monitors under its gaming brands Nitro and Predator, with an impressive specification set that makes them latest-gen-console ready. As part of the company’s CES 2021 announcements, Acer has also announced the all-new AMD-powered Acer Spin 514 Chromebook.

Acer Nitro XV282K KV

Coming back to the monitors, the highlight of the new range is, of course, the Nitro XV282K KV. It is the first 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) monitor from the company that comes with HDMI 2.1. This makes the monitor capable of offering uncompressed 4K video at a refresh rate of up to 120Hz along with variable refresh rate (VRR). Essentially, this makes it great not only for PC users with the latest GPUs from NVIDIA or AMD but also for next-gen consoles owners of the Xbox Series X/S or Sony PlayStation 5, allowing you to game at 4K 120fps across the board as long as you use a compatible HDMI 2.1 cable.

Acer Nitro XV282K KV

The monitor comes with an IPS panel with HDR 400 and Acer claims that it covers 90% of the DCI-P3 wide color gamut to and whooping 100,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Other features include AMD FreeSync Premium, TÜV Rheinland Eyesafe certification, and Acer’s Agile-Splendor IPS technology to deliver clear images at wide viewing angles. Lastly, the monitor also comes with Acer VisionCare 3.0 that is said to incorporate several technologies including LightSense, ColorSense, ProxiSense, and BluelightShield Pro to help reduce eye strain.

The monitor also features a solid set of ports including two HDMI 2.1 ports (of course), a DisplayPort, a USB Type-C port with 65W PD charging, four USB Type-A 3.0 ports, and a USB Type-B port.

Pricing and Availability

The Nitro XV282K KV will be available in May starting at $899.99.

Acer Predator XB273U NX and Acer Predator XB323QK NV

The Predator series from Acer is more premium when compared to the Nitro series, but for some reason, the company has chosen to bring HDMI 2.1 only to the more affordable lineup. Having said that, the Predator XB273U NX and the XB323QK NV are also quite impressive on paper.

Acer Predator XB323QK NV

The Predator XB323QK NV is a 31.5-inch option that features 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution with a 144Hz refresh rate. Acer claims that the panel is quite vivid with 90% DCI-P3 Wide Color Gamut with Acer’s Agile Splendor IPS and VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification. It is also G-Sync compatible and features a similar set of ports (excluding HDMI 2.1) as the Nitro XV282K KV. The company will be selling this monitor in May with a price tag of $1,199.99.

Acer Predator XB273U NX

Lastly, the Predator XB273U NX is catered for gamers who are looking for an ultra-fast refresh rate monitor. The 27-inch monitor comes with a WQHD (2560 x 1440) IPS panel along with a 240Hz refresh rate that can be overclocked to 275Hz, and a 0.5ms response time (G to G), for an immersive and smooth experience. It comes with standard HDR400 and is said to cover 95% of the DCI-P3 spectrum for vibrant colors and deeper blacks. Apart from being G-SYNC compatible, the monitor also supports NVIDIA’s newly announced Reflex Latency Analyzer, a system latency measurement tool that measures and optimizes the time taken from when you click a button on the mouse till the resulting pixels change on the screen. This model will also be available for purchase in May starting at $1,099.99.

Samsung

Back in August, Samsung opened up a developer beta initiative targeting the Galaxy S20 lineup for its Android 11-based One UI 3.0 update. Later on, the Galaxy Note 20 series and other models joined the roster. The Korean OEM has not yet disclosed its plans on Android 11 rollout for other models. We can speculate that the current generation flagship series will get before the end of the year, and others will get it later. We’ll update this article when Samsung officially releases a timeline.

As of January 6, 2021, Samsung has rolled out the One UI 3.0 stable release based on the latest Android version for the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20 FE, Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10 Lite, Galaxy Note 10, and the Galaxy Z Flip lineup. Moreover, the company has started pushing the public beta builds of One UI 3.0 for the Galaxy M31 and Galaxy A51 5G in some regions.

Sony

Sony has published a roadmap for when its devices would get Android 11. However, the company hasn’t provided exact dates for any of the devices, simply providing rough estimates.

Xiaomi

Xiaomi has also been preparing for the eventual rollout of Android 11. Like OPPO, the company recently launched a beta testing program for its Android 11-based MIUI 12 update, and the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro are the first in the line across both Global and China branches. The Chinese OEM is expected to eventually reveal a new version of MIUI — MIUI 13 — with new features in the near future.

Verizon delays its 3G shutdown again to give users even more time to upgrade

Verizon Wireless, one of the big three carriers in the U.S., has once again delayed the planned shutdown of its 3G network.

In late 2019, Verizon spokesperson Howie Waterman told LightReading that the carrier planned to shut down its 3G CDMA network by the end of 2020. Now the carrier has backtracked on those plans, with Verizon spokesperson Kevin King telling LightReading that the carrier no longer has a set date on when it will wind down its 3G service.

Verizon has been working to shut down its CDMA network for a couple of years now. In 2016, the carrier warned customers that 3G service would end on December 31, 2019, but the company decided to delay the shutdown to the end of 2020 to give customers more time to upgrade. Given the economic hardships millions are facing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s welcoming to hear that affected customers will have more time to keep their old devices and plans. However, LightReading reports that the carrier plans to shutter the network as soon as possible, so customers still stuck with older devices and plans will eventually be forced to upgrade.

Fortunately for customers, network speeds have increased dramatically since the days of 3G. Earlier this year, Verizon flipped the switch on its sub-6GHz 5G network, bringing 5G access to millions of customers. Meanwhile, the carrier’s even-faster millimeter-wave 5G network was expanded to cover parts of 61 cities by the end of 2020. In 2021, more and more customers will have access to 5G smartphones as silicon vendors design new, more affordable chipsets.

Unfortunately, the shuttering of 3G will also affect businesses that use Verizon’s network for their IoT services. For example, LightReading points out that Toyota’s “Safety Connect” service is set to shut down in North America by the end of 2022. It’s likely that other useful services will go offline when the carrier flips the switch on its CDMA network in the near future, but for now, we have no idea when that’ll be.

The Lenovo Tab P11 is the latest productivity tablet from the company

At CES 2021, Lenovo has announced a new productivity tablet called the Tab P11. The newest Android-based tablet seems like a humbler version of the Tab P11 Pro that was launched back in August and is already selling in the US at a starting price of $500. The Tab P11 comes with the same set of supported accessories as the Pro variant, including the Keyboard Pack and Lenovo Precision Pen 2, both of which will be sold separately. This new tablet has been launched alongside the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 series, the new Yoga 7 AIO PC, new monitors, and the Lavie Mini PC and Lavie Pro Mobile laptop.

The Tab P11 comes with an 11-inch display with a 2K (2000 x 1200 pixels) resolution, which is slightly smaller than the 11.5-inch on the Pro variant. It is an IPS panel and comes with 400-nits of brightness and an integrated Eye Care mode technology certified by TÜV Rheinland to lower harmful blue light to reduce eye strain. The tablet is Netflix certified, so you can expect HD content on it. Powering the device is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 SoC which includes LTE connectivity and there is 6GB of RAM to handle your multitasking needs.

The tablet runs on Android 10 and comes with Kids Space from Google, a new kids mode that features apps, books, and videos to help kids under nine years of age learn and have fun. As the COVID19 virus continues to force many to work from home, Lenovo is aiming to sell the Tab P11 to customers that want a portable office setup at home. To expand the productivity capabilities of the tablet, Lenovo is also offering some add on accessories that would be sold separately. First is the ultra-thin Keyboard Pack with a built-in trackpad that can snap into place using magnets and connects using the 4-point pogo-pin connector. There is also the Lenovo Precision Pen 2 which is capable of sensing tilt and subtle pressure adjustments for a more intuitive experience.

Lastly, there is the Lenovo Smart Charging Station 2 that allows for hands-free movie watching and stable charging while docked, and a new Folio Case for protection while you are carrying the tablet in your backpack.

Pricing and Availability

The Lenovo Tab P11 will start at $229.99 and will be available starting this month. Some of the add-on accessories are already available on the Lenovo Store as they were launched with the Tab P11 Pro back in August 2020.

Lenovo launches the Lavie Mini PC alongside the Lavie Pro Mobile laptop

Lenovo took over NEC Corporation’s computing business back in 2016, and ever since then, it has been selling some products under the LAVIE brand. This year at CES 2021, Lenovo has come up with two Lavie branded devices – the Lavie Mini and Lavie Pro Mobile. The former is an 8-inch ultra-mobile PC, while the Lavie Pro Mobile is a more traditional-sized notebook. These releases come alongside the new Lenovo IdeaPad 5 series, the new Yoga 7 AIO PC, new monitors, and the new Lenovo Tab P11 launch as part of the company’s CES announcements.

Lavie Mini PC

The Lavie Mini is technically a pocket-sized PC, but has a lot more of a 2-in-1 convertible concept PC vibe to it. The device features an 8-inch WUXGA (1920 x 1200) touch panel display, and can be configured with Intel’s 11th Gen Core-i7 mobile processor with Intel Iris Xe graphics. There is a 256GB SSD on the inside with 16GB of LPDDR4 memory. With an overall weight of 579-grams, the LAVIE MINI is fairly easy to carry around and comes with a backlit keyboard as well. The tiny device also features an IR camera with Windows Hello for seamless login, up to a 26WHr battery, and Wi-Fi 6 onboard.

The device comes with a special optional Gaming Controller that transforms the mini laptop into a Nintendo Switch-esque portable gaming console. As per Lenovo, the device can handle ‘high-quality PC games such as battle royale and car racing games.’ The controller comes with all the necessary buttons and keys one would need for gaming along with vibrations, left/right trigger buttons, and analog thumbsticks. And, just like the Nintendo Switch, you can use its optional HDMI-connected Dock to play games on a large display.

Pricing and Availability

The Lavie Mini is currently a prototype and Lenovo hasn’t shared any plans regarding a launch or a price. It does however remind us of the GDP Win 3 handheld gaming PC which somewhat offers the same functionality but with a unique sliding form factor.

Lavie Pro Mobile

The second product under the NEC portfolio is the Lavie Pro Mobile. It is pretty much an upgrade for last year’s model that came with the 8th-gen Intel Core processor option in a neat and lightweight package. This year, the company is introducing some welcoming upgrades including long-lasting battery life and an improved 1.5mm key travel for a better typing experience. The notebook also comes with a lift-up hinge function that tilts your keyboard to your personal preference. Weighing at about 889-grams with a thickness of 16.7mm, it is definitely one of the lightest notebooks on the market.

NEC LAVIE Pro Mobile

As for the rest of the specs, the Lavie Pro Mobile can be configured with up to an 11th Gen Intel Core-i7 processor with Intel Iris Xe graphics, a 13.3-inch full-HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) display, and a claimed battery life of up to 10 hours.

Pricing and Availability

Pricing for the notebook starts at $1699.99 in the USA, while availability details will be shared by Lenovo at a later stage.
