BlackBerry CEO Announces Google Partnership

John Chen, executive chairman and CEO of BlackBerry has taken to the internet to announce an official partnership with Google and the impending release of the Android-based Priv smartphone. Apparently the Priv (née Venice) will satisfy the needs of existing users of both platforms, by bringing “the best of BlackBerry security and productivity to the Android ecosystem”, whilst the company also assured continuing focus on its proprietary BB10 operating system.

BlackBerry Officially Confirms its Upcoming Android Smartphone

BlackBerry Confirms the Android Priv

We’ve been hearing a lot about the upcoming Android smartphone from BlackBerry (which was originally known as Venice), the Priv. BlackBerry CEO spoke during their Q2 Fiscal 2016 report and officially confirmed the rumored device. Customers will get a choice whether they want Android or BlackBerry 10 OS installed on it but John Chen says they will not be giving up on their own operating system for now.

Google Antitrust Probe Over Android in the US

Google Antitrust Probe

Bloomberg is reporting that FTC officials have been meeting with various technology companies in the United States. These companies say that Google gives priority to their own applications and services on the Android platform. This seems awfully reminiscent of the antitrust issues that Microsoft went through between 1998 and 2001. The investigation is in its early states and we’ll hear more about this as it develops.

Google Play Services 8.1 SDK is Available for Download

Google Play Services 8.1 SDK

The SDK for Google Play Services 8.1 has been released and developers can start playing with the new APIs now. New features in this release include Marshmallow’s granular permissions, application invites, ambient mode maps, Player Stats API for Play Games and a Nearby Status Listener. Developers will need to test out their code because there are some changes to GoogleApiClient and PendingResult that can break their creations.
