Microsoft Delays Release of Project Astoria Tool for Developers

androidaapps

Back in April, we heard that Microsoft was working on what was dubbed as Project Astoria. This tool was planned to make it easy for developers to quickly port Android applications directly over to Windows 10. A Microsoft representative has told re/code that the “Astoria bridge is not ready yet”, but at this time, it remains unclear if Microsoft has dropped the project or just delayed it.

Install Custom ROMs on LG Optimus L9 With Locked Bootloader

2807b-2

XDA Member EdwinMoq found out that the LG Optimus L9 uses the same signature keys as the LG G3, making it now possible to install a custom rom without unlocking the bootloader. The phone does need to be rooted for this to work, but the procedure is otherwise quite straight forward.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Marshmallow System Dump Available!

20151115_210413_resized

A few hours ago, reports started emerging of a XDA user receiving Touchwiz based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow on his T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 5. Many media outlets reported on it with the information that the system dump was available at their moment of writing.

We refrained from doing so till we actually had the System Dump, and now we do!

XDA Senior Member danon.brown found himself on an unusual firmware after he accepted an OTA after an Odin flash of his device. Much to the member’s surprise, the firmware was actually from a Marshmallow build of Touchwiz, with the firmware name MRA58K.N920TUVU2DOK5. For the greater good of the community, danon.brown shared a lot of screenshots from the build, along with agreeing to work in coordination with XDA Recognized Developer arter97 to obtain a full partition dump of the device. You can find the system dump here, with the full partition dump available here.

Some screenshots from the newest version of TouchWiz are below:

The system dump coincides with previous reports of Samsung’s update roadmap which stated that the Samsung Galaxy Note 5’s Android 6.0 Marshmallow update was “approved”, with a stated ETA as December 2015. While Samsung has not officially mentioned of a rollout, this could be the beginning of a staged rollout.

This build was from a T-Mobile Note 5 (SM-N920T) and can likely work on some other variants with minimal modifications, but be sure to check for reports if you are unsure.

Thanks to danon.brown and arter97 for their contributions!

Asus Announces Marshmallow Update Plans

asus-zenfone-2

It’s been over a month since Marshmallow officially launched, and most major OEMs have announced a roadmap indicating which devices will get the update and when, bringing an end to many anxious waiting periods. However, Asus had refrained from any such indication until earlier today, which saw a staff member take to the ZenTalk forums to announce that the PadfoneS, Zenfone 2 – Regular, Deluxe and Laser editions, and the Zenfone Selfie would be receiving the update, with no designated timeline accompanying the post.

Gmail Parsing Bug Lets Users Spoof Email Address

Gmail Parsing Bug Lets You Spoof Your Email Address

A bug within the Gmail application for Android lets you change your email address to anything you want it to be. To trigger the bug, go into the Settings and change the ‘Display Name’ to something like “”security@google.com” with two quotation marks at the beginning. This will cause the real name to be hidden and the receiver won’t be able to reveal it.

OnePlus Announces Android 6.0 Marshmallow Roadmap

marshmallow_Forum

marshmallow_ForumOnePlus took to its forums to announce the roadmap for bringing over Android 6.0 Marshmallow to its growing portfolio of devices.

First up is the OnePlus One, which will continue on with Cyanogen OS as that is what the product officially shipped with. The Marshmallow update for the One (with Cyanogen OS) is expected in the first quarter of 2016. There will also be a community build of OxygenOS, but no timeline has been promised for it as the company will be “updating the community build when time allows”.

Next up is the OnePlus 2, which is also expecting an update in Q1 2016. This update will be for OxygenOS and will include the new standard API for fingerprint sensors that comes along with Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

For the OnePlus X, the company has refrained from giving a timeline for the Marshmallow upgrade. Considering that the roadmap is quite flexible for the other two devices, we have mixed feelings for this. On one hand, not providing a date or even a quarter gives them ample of time and plenty of wiggle room to push a polished update. On the other hand, not being able to specify a quarter in 2016 for the release of the OS makes one wonder if the company is actually committed to delivering Marshmallow while it is still relevant. Considering the fact that OxygenOS is decently close to stock Android, and that we still have one and a half month left for 2015 to end, the OnePlus X loses some of its sheen as a lower budget handset which benefits from being close to stock Android as it loses out on the quick upgradability aspect. Whatever be the case, we hope that the device will receive Marshmallow along the same time frame as the other OnePlus devices.

It’s not all bad news for OnePlus X owners, as the company has released the kernel sources for the device. This should help inject some more choice into the custom ROM scene for the device. You can find the kernel sources here.

OnePlus sure has their work cut out for them, as they should be aiming to beat manufacturers with heavy skins on delivering a pleasant Android 6.0 experience in a timely manner. The devices, along with their budget, make for some decent competition in the mid range. Timely update support would be a welcome cherry on the top.
