Samsung Galaxy S11 leaked renders reveal penta-camera setup, centered hole-punch display and no headphone jack

Over the last couple of days, we’ve seen leaked renders for a couple of upcoming Samsung devices. We initially saw renders of the Galaxy A51, which were followed by CAD renders of the Galaxy A71. It seems like Samsung is having a tough time keeping the leaksters in check, as we now have our first look at its upcoming flagship — the Galaxy S11.

The renders in question come from renowned leakster @OnLeaks and reveal pretty much everything about the Galaxy S11’s design. For starters, the renders suggest that Samsung’s next-gen flagship will feature a penta-camera setup housed within a rectangular camera module. We’ve previously seen a similar design in the Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 leaks. Other than the camera module, the back panel on the device maintains a clean look with just the Samsung logo in the center. The renders also reveal that Samsung has decided to reposition the hole-punch in the display to the center, much like what we saw on the Galaxy Note 10.

While those are the only noteworthy changes on the back and front of the device, the Galaxy S11 does seem to have some significant changes on the bottom and side edges. The volume rocker and power button can be found on the right edge of the device, with a slight bump in the curved edge to help users easily locate the buttons. The left edge is completely blank, which means that Samsung has finally dropped the Bixby button altogether.

At the bottom, the device has a USB Type-C port for charging and data syncing, along with a single speaker grille and, sadly, no headphone jack (RIP). Other than the renders, OnLeaks has also revealed that the device will measure in at 161.9 x 73.7 x 7.8mm, with the camera bump increasing its thickness to 8.9mm. We now also know that the device will feature a 6.7-inch curved display, however, the curvature on the sides is noticeable lesser than what we saw on the Galaxy S10.

While we don’t have any information on the internal specifications of the device yet, a CCC certification listing recently confirmed that the device will include support for 5G and 25-watt fast charging. Additionally, an APK teardown of the Samsung Camera app unearthed strings of code that hint at upcoming support for 108MP photos and 8K video capture. This leads us to believe that the Galaxy S11 series might feature Samsung’s 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX S5KHMX sensor that can be found on the recently released Xiaomi Mi Note 10.

Google Camera mod brings manual/forced Astrophotography mode to Pixels for Light Painting shots

Google Camera has practically been the highlight feature of the Google Pixel lineup, and often the saving grace for devices that otherwise would have been mediocre experiences. For the Google Pixel 4 and the Google Pixel 4 XL, Google Camera enables features like Astrophotography mode: a dedicated photo mode that takes very long exposure shots and employs Google’s new Night Sight sky segmentation and optimization algorithms to allow the smartphone to capture decent photos of the starry sky, a feat that has otherwise remained very difficult to achieve for other OEMs and their flagships. Long exposure shots are also employed to take creative Light Painting photos: photos where the light source moves during a long exposure shot to emulate a “drawing” effect with the light. As it turns out, Google Camera’s Astrophotography mode can also be leveraged to achieve great results with Light Painting photos, as made possible by this Google Camera mod for Pixel devices.

Camera PX is a GCam mod for Google Pixel devices and is a result of a collaborative effort between XDA Senior Member cstark27, XDA Senior Member back.rider555, and XDA Senior Member johngalt1. We have talked about this Google Camera mod before, as it enables Astrophotography, Super Res Zoom, and other features on older Pixel devices while enabling features such as 16x Zoom on current-generation Pixel devices. Camera PX has now been updated to a new version, and the highlighting change for this update is the introduction of manual/forced Astrophotography mode and the introduction of a Light Painting mode.

Astrophotography on the stock, unmodified Google Camera on the Google Pixel 4 only activates when you are pointing at the night sky, and are using a tripod to eliminate any possibility of hand movement. As such, Astrophotography mode has some strict parameters for activation. And while the results are amazing for a smartphone, some more flexibility would certainly be appreciated by users. In the example showcased above, the photographer had to be very creative to enable the mode, which would not always be a viable option.

Camera PX thus adds a button, allowing users to manually enter or force Astrophotography mode on Pixel devices. The mod also adds another button for a Light Painting mode, which is essentially a tweak applied to the Astrophotography mode to optimize it for light painting shots. You no longer have to fight the app to enable these modes, though it is still recommended that you use these while your phone is on a tripod.

Keep in mind that this Camera PX GCam mod is only available for the Pixel devices, so please do not trouble the developers enquiring whether it will be available for other non-Pixel devices. Astrophotography mode is only officially available with stock Google Camera v7 and above on the Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, and Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL, though this mod also enables it for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL and the original Pixel and Pixel XL.

For the complete list of features this mod enables across all Pixel devices, refer the chart below. “Default” means that the stock Google Camera app already had the feature for the device, “Y”/”OK” means that this mod added the feature to the device, and “N/A”/”Disabled” means that the feature could not be enabled for the listed device, either because of unsolved crashes, missing hardware, or messing up a fundamental function.

Unofficial LineageOS 17 is now available for the Samsung Galaxy S10 (Exynos)

Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S and Note lineup are offered in two different variants around the world. While devices in the US, China, Latin America, etc. receive the Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, most other regions receive devices with an Exynos chip. Due to this, custom ROM development for the devices is a bit inconsistent, to say the least. For instance, the Galaxy Note 10 with the Exynos chip just recently received its first unofficial build of LineageOS 16 based on Android 9 Pie. However, due to the popularity of the Galaxy S10 series, developers have managed to port LineageOS 17 based on Android 10 to the Exynos variants.

An unofficial build of LineageOS 17 is now available for the Galaxy S10 series on our forums and you can flash it on your device right away. The build brings all of the cool new features introduced in Android 10 while offering a clean stock Android-like experience. Before you go ahead and download the ROM though, you should carefully read the installation instructions mentioned in the thread linked below. Users who have already tried out the ROM have reported a few issues, including the lack of dual-SIM support. However, the thread does contain some instructions to enable dual-SIM support. It’s also worth noting that the current build doesn’t include support for VoLTE and VoWiFi.

Android-x86 project releases Android 9 Pie RC while Bliss OS releases Android 10 alpha build for PCs

Earlier this year in January, the Android-x86 project released the first stable version of Android 8.1 Oreo. For the unaware, Android-x86 is an open-source community project that aims to bring Android to PCs running on the x86 or x86-64 architectures. In the Oreo release, the team added plenty of new features, like the freeform window mode, to make Android run a little better on PCs. Since then, the team has been hard at work on the Android 9 Pie release and it has now rolled out the first Android 9 Pie release candidate (RC) build that you can run on a virtual machine or on your desktop.

As reported by Android Police, the build brings all the features Google introduced with Android 9 Pie, along with extended compatibility for desktop hardware. While the build offers an interface that’s close to stock Android, it does pack in additional features that are better suited for traditional input devices like a mouse and keyboard. These new features include an optional taskbar with a start menu and a recent apps tray that can be used as an alternative launcher. Here’s the full list of key features:

  • Support both 64-bit and 32-bit kernel and userspace with latest LTS kernel 4.19.80.
  • Support OpenGL ES 3.x hardware acceleration for Intel, AMD, Nvidia and QEMU(virgl) by Mesa 19.0.8.
  • Support OpenGL ES 3.0 via SwiftShader for software rendering on unsupported GPU devices.
  • Support hardware accelerated codecs on devices with Intel HD & G45 graphics family.
  • Support secure booting from UEFI and installing to UEFI disk.
  • A text based GUI installer.
  • Add theme support to GRUB-EFI.
  • Support Multi-touch, Audio, Wifi, Bluetooth, Sensors, Camera and Ethernet (DHCP only).
  • Auto-mount external usb drive and sdcard.
  • Add Taskbar as an alternative launcher which puts a start menu and recent apps tray on top of your screen and support freeform window mode.
  • Enable ForceDefaultOrientation on devices without known sensors. Portrait apps can run in a landscape device without rotating the screen.
  • Support arm arch apps via the native bridge mechanism. (Settings -> Android-x86 options)
  • Support to upgrade from non-official releases.
  • Add experimental Vulkan support for newer Intel and AMD GPUs. (Boot via Advanced options -> Vulkan support)
  • Simulate WiFi adapter by Ethernet to increase app compatibility.
  • Mouse integration support for VMs including VirtualBox, QEMU, VMware and Hyper-V.

If you want to test the latest Android-x86 Pie RC build for yourself, you can head over to the source linked below for instructions. You can also get prebuilt images from Fosshub or OSDN. Before you go ahead and install it on your system though, do check out the list of known issues below:

  • Google Play Service may crash sometimes on the 32-bit image.
  • Suspend and resume doesn’t work on some devices.
  • Nvidia GPU (nouveau) may hang sometimes.
  • 3D support of VMware is broken. (only non-accelerated mode works)
  • Taking photos doesn’t work if Vulkan is enabled.

If you’re not interested in running Android 9 on your PC though and you’d much rather prefer running Android 10, then you’d be glad to know that Bliss OS has released an Android 10 alpha build for PCs. Bliss OS is essentially a fork of Android-x86 that offers extra features like taskbar integration for a better user experience on PC. However, it’s worth noting that the latest builds from Bliss OS are experimental and are not intended to be used as daily drivers. Nonetheless, it’s an interesting project for those of you who wish to run Android 10 on your PC. Vivo targets India’s online buyers with U20’s Snadragon 675, 5000mAh battery, 18W charging at ₹10,990 (~$150)

Vivo is the third-largest smartphone brand in India by the number of shipments. Offline sales make up for the majority of Vivo’s sale in India and but lately, they have been trying to woo the consumers who prefer to buy online. In September, Vivo announced the U10, their first online-only smartphone in India and its primary virtue was the 5,000mAh battery. The company has today announced the second product in this series – the Vivo U20 – with a host of exciting features for attractive pricing and primarily targetted at the youth. The phone is already available in China as the Vivo U3.

The Vivo U20 is swanked with a radiant pattern on the back that is easily reminiscent of the Realme 3 Pro’s race-track inspired design. Vivo, however, goes a step further and uses golden accents around the triple rear camera and its logo on the back, which is laminated with a layer of plastic. On the front, there’s a 6.53-inch Full HD+ LCD display which comes with a Panda MN228 display protection, a Chinese alternative to Gorilla Glass.

In terms of its camera, the triple sensor setup includes a 16MP IMX499 primary sensor, an 8MP wide-angle sensor for 120º field of view, and a 2MP Super Macro sensor. On the front, there’s a 16MP camera for selfies. The rear camera can record 4K videos at 30fps or Full HD videos at 60fps.

Inside, there’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 SoC powering the Vivo U20. There’s an option between 4GB and 6GB of RAM. Meanwhile, 64GB comes are the standard option for the UFS 2.1 storage. The storage can be extended up to an additional 256GB with a micro SD card.

The Vivo U20 carries over the large 5,000mAh battery from the U10 and also gets support for 18W fast charging via a micro USB port at the bottom of the phone. Additionally, the phone supports dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0.

The Vivo U20 will be available in India starting November 28th, 2019 via Amazon India and Vivo’s online store. The 4GB RAM variant is priced at ₹10,990 whereas the 6GB variant will come for ₹11,990. For the first few weeks of the sale, the Vivo U20 will get a discount of ₹1,000 on prepaid orders over both the channels.

Interestingly, Vivo announced the Y19 a couple of days ago, which is the same phone as the U20 but with a MediaTek Helio P65 SoC in place of the Snapdragon 675. Since the Y19 is not an online-only device, it is priced much higher with its 4GB/128GB variant selling for ₹13,990.

Realme 5 Pro update brings front camera Nightscape while Realme X2 Pro update brings November 2019 patches

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Realme has been doing a great job of releasing software updates for its devices over the last couple of weeks. The company recently released updates for the Realme 3 Pro and the Realme X, featuring the new dark mode and Android security patches. It has also released updates for the Realme 5 and Realme 2 Pro, with the same features. Most recently, it rolled out updates for the Realme XT, Realme 3/3i, and Realme X2. Now, the company has started rolling out updates for the Realme 5 Pro and the recently launched Realme X2 Pro.

The latest OTA update for the Realme 5 Pro (vRMX1971EX_11_A.13) brings the nightscape feature to the front camera, which will allow users to click better selfies in low-light conditions. The update also includes the Android security patches for November 2019, along with a few minor improvements and bug fixes. Redmi K30 live images confirm 120Hz refresh rate display and Qualcomm Snapdragon 730/G

Xiaomi’s Redmi sub-brand attempted its first foray into the flagship market with the Redmi K20 Pro, a device that was widely praised for being an affordable flagship at a time when several other OEMs strayed further away from affordability. The K20 series was launched in May 2019 in China, but Redmi had revealed in October 2019 that it was already working on the successor to the series. The Redmi K30 was confirmed to be Redmi’s first 5G smartphone, and the official teaser accompanying this announcement confirmed that it will come with dual punch-hole front cameras. Now, we are finally seeing the first live images of the Redmi K30, which go on to confirm that the next Redmi flagship will indeed have a 120Hz high refresh rate display.

Just a few days ago, we had exclusively broken the news that an upcoming Xiaomi smartphone — likely the Redmi K30 –will come with a 120Hz high refresh rate display as well as Sony’s new IMX686 image sensor, and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. This news was based on code evidence found within MIUI 11 builds. Now, these new live images originating from Weibo corroborates some of our findings.

First up, we have an image of the About Phone section within MIUI 11, which mentions the device name to be Redmi K30. The device pictured lines up with the official teaser image of the Redmi K30.

The next image showcases the option to switch between 120Hz and 60Hz refresh rate options.

The next image shows off the landing page of AIDA64, which confirms the display’s 120Hz refresh rate capabilities, and goes on to mention the Adreno 618 GPU. The Adreno 618 is found on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 and Snapdragon 730G SoC, which essentially confirms that at least one variant in the Redmi K30 series will come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730/G, and that this variant will retain the 120Hz refresh rate display.

Extrapolating on the existence of the Redmi K20 and a “Pro” variant, we can expect to see the Redmi K30 accompanied with a Redmi K30 Pro. Xiaomi confirmed the existence of a 5G variant of the K30 series as well, which makes it a possibility that there might be more variants in the lineup.
