LG G9 renders show off the U-shaped notch and quad rear cameras

With a new year, we always get new phones. But while we’re about to see CES 2020 unfold with a number of announcements, we also have our eyes set on MWC 2020 in February, where we will see a number of smartphone announcements from different brands such as Samsung, LG, and more. One of the expected announcements is LG’s new line of flagship smartphones, which correspond to the LG G9 and the LG V60. Now, we’re getting a first-hand look at the upcoming LG G9 thanks to CAD renders.

The most notable thing here is the phone’s sleek profile. LG is no stranger to using weird gimmicks that no one will probably ever use realistically on their consumer phones, as was the case of modules in the LG G5 and Hand ID (which allowed you to unlock your phone using the veins of your hands) on the LG G8. The LG G8X, a revision of the LG G8, got rid of this Hand ID feature for a slimmer profile, which is the one the LG G9 will be carrying forward this year, for better or worse. A teardrop notch is present here which holds a single front-facing camera sensor, and the front bezels are further reduced. The screen measures around 6.7-6.9-inches with the same 19.5:9 aspect ratio.

The phone will also feature a quad rear camera setup, centered and horizontally mounted, in a very similar fashion to the Galaxy S10 5G from last year. There is also no back fingerprint scanner to be seen and we can’t spy one in the sides either, which tells us that this phone will be carrying an in-display fingerprint sensor–no surprises there given how its predecessors also had one.

As we said before, the LG G9 is expected to be announced alongside a 5G-touting LG V60 during MWC 2020, so keep an eye out for an announcement in the short run.

Samsung officially announces the Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite

We’ve been tracking the Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite for a while now. The first rumors of Samsung working on “Lite” versions of the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 popped up back in October. Since then, information and leaked renders have slowly trickled in, but today Samsung made both devices official ahead of CES.

OS Android 10.0

The Galaxy S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite are actually very similar, which is a little weird. The regular Galaxy S10 and Note 10 are quite different, but the Lite versions have a lot in common. Both devices feature triple rear cameras, 32MP front cameras (in hole punch), 6/8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, 6.7-inch AMOLED Full HD+ displays, in-display fingerprint scanners, and 4,500mAh batteries.

Galaxy Note 10 Lite

That’s a lot of the key specifications, but there are a few things that differentiate these two phones. The most obvious difference is the Galaxy Note 10 Lite has the S Pen. Samsung barely mentions it in its announcement, but the fact that you can get the S Pen in a more affordable device is pretty cool. Another big difference is the processor. The Note 10 Lite features Samsung’s Exynos 8895 chipset, while the Galaxy S10 Lite has the newer Snapdragon 855 SoC.

As mentioned, both devices feature triple rear cameras, but the specifications are different. The Galaxy Note 10 Lite has a 12MP main, 12MP Ultra-Wide, and 12MP telephoto. The Galaxy S10 Lite features a 48MP main, 5MP macro, and 12MP Ultra-Wide. The cameras are also positioned slightly different with the Note 10 Lite having a square bump and the S10 Lite is more of a rectangle.

Galaxy S10 Lite

One small difference is the display panel. The Galaxy Note 10 Lite’s display is Super AMOLED, while the Galaxy S10 Lite’s display is Super AMOLED Plus. The color options are different as well, with the Note 10 Lite being available in Aura Glow, Aura Black, and Aura Red, and the S10 Lite being available in Prism White, Prism Black, and Prism Blue.

Samsung did not share the exact release date of either phone just yet, but the Galaxy Note 10 Lite will cost €599 and the Galaxy S10 Lite will be €649. The S10 Lite has slightly better specifications, but it doesn’t have the S Pen. That’s really what the choice comes down to. What do you think of Samsung’s Lite phones?

Samsung shipped 6.7 million 5G phones in 2019 and plans to launch a 5G Tab S6 soon

Samsung is one of the largest phone manufacturers in the world. Annually, they sell millions of phones throughout the world. They kept up this tradition in 2019 with not only LTE phones but also a growing number of 5G phones. But just how many did it ship? Samsung says it shipped 6.7 million 5G phones throughout 2019.

Samsung actually had a total of five 5G phones which accounted for 53.9% of global 5G phone shipments. These phones are the Galaxy S10 5G, Galaxy Note 10 5G, Galaxy Note 10+ 5G, Galaxy Fold 5G, and the Galaxy A90 5G. These phones ranged in price from around $700 to $2300. It’s pretty crazy to think Samsung was able to sell this many 5G phones worldwide when you consider the scant coverage right now. With the launch of the Snapdragon 765, we can expect even more 5G phones with lower prices.

To boost 5G sales in 2020, Samsung will be releasing more 5G phones, starting with the Galaxy S20 and a 5G tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 5G. We don’t know much about this tablet, besides its Q1 2020 launch date in South Korea, but it should basically be the same as its LTE counterpart. The Galaxy S20 will be available in 5 different variants, the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20 5G, Galaxy S20+, Galaxy S20+ 5G, and Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G. Three of these 5 phones will have 5G support, really pushing Samsung’s 5G phones forward. In a lot of major regions, like the United States, there won’t even be an LTE-only option with the 5G variant being the only option available.

With Samsung’s unexpectedly high 5G sales this year, we can only hope for even better sales next year and wider 5G rollout. 5G is going to be a huge part of the future, and I, for one, can not wait for all the possibilities 5G opens up for us. The higher speeds and lower latency could be great for game streaming, drones, and more.

Vivo S1Pro with 48MP Samsung GM1, Snapdragon 665, and Super AMOLED display launches in India

Vivo S1 was launched in India in August 2019 as part of the company’s new series of “S”tylish smartphones. It came with a triple rear camera setup at a time when smartphone brands were at the early stages of experimenting with more than two rear cameras on mid-range smartphones. Along with snazzy colors, the Vivo S1 came with a Super AMOLED display, fast 18W charging, and up to 128GB storage. But despite these features and a pretty hefty price-tag, Vivo compromised in a few areas. The Vivo S1 was limited to a 16MP camera and had a micro-USB port. To rectify these shortcomings, the company has now launched its successor – the Vivo S1Pro – with 48MP quad cameras and other new features.

vivo s1 pro

The Vivo S1Pro has been available in Southeast Asian regions including the Philipines since November as the “S1 Pro.” Although the Indian variant comes without spacing in the name, it is identical in terms of specifications. It is powered by a Snapdragon 665 SoC and comes with 8GB of RAM. There’s 128GB of storage onboard which can be expanded by up to 256GB with a microSD card. The Vivo S1Pro features the same 6.38-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED panel with a U-shaped notch as its predecessor.

When it comes to diamond-shaped quad cameras on the back of the Vivo S1, the setup now includes a 48MP Samsung ISOCELL Bright GM1 sensor. While the 8MP wide-angle camera with a 108º wide field of view and the 2MP depth sensor from the S1 have been retained, there’s a new 2MP macro camera in the camera setup. On the front, the 32MP selfie camera remains unchanged.

The 4,500mAh battery and the 18W fast charging support remain the same but Vivo has updated the USB port to Type-C. Besides the black and the white colors of the Vivo S1Pro present in the Philipines, Vivo has also introduced a new blue color with the launch in India. The back panel, however, is still made of plastic when Vivo’s sister brand Realme is offering glass back panels for a much lower price.

In terms of software, the Vivo S1Pro runs the company’s custom Android skin – FuntouchOS v9.2 – based on Android 9 Pie. We can expect an Android 10 update to be available sometime in 2020.

Late last year, Samsung started rolling out One UI 2.0 based on Android 10 for a couple of its devices. Among these were devices in the Galaxy S and Note series, along with a couple of devices in the budget-friendly Galaxy M series. The Galaxy Note 10 also received the One UI 2.0 update featuring all the new features introduced in Android 10, along with some One UI specific changes. As part of the update, the Galaxy Note 10 also received Android security patches for December 2019. As reported by Sammobile, the update package with the software version N970FXXS1BSLD is now rolling out to devices in the Galaxy Note 10 series in Germany. The update doesn’t include any new features aside from the latest Android security patches. Samsung has been doing a great job of keeping a majority of its devices up to date with the latest monthly security patches and the company began rolling out the January 2020 security patch before its official changelog was even published. Other than the Galaxy Note 10 series, the Samsung Galaxy A10, A10s, A20, A30, A50, and Galaxy Tab S5e have all received the January 2020 security patches.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ users in Germany should receive the update notification any time soon. Dell XPS 13 gets a 2020 refresh with 10th Gen Intel Ice Lake chips and Ubuntu-based Developer Edition

Just a week ahead of CES 2020, Dell has lifted the covers off the updated Dell XPS 13 — a thin and light 13.4-inch notebook featuring 10th-Gen Intel Core Ice Lake processors. Along with the new processors, the device features a new display with a 16:10 aspect ratio and minimal bezels on the bottom, Iris Plus Graphics, up to 32GB of LPDDR4X-3733 RAM (soldered) and up to 2TB PCIe solid-state storage.

Dell XPS 13

As per a recent report from AnandTech, the new XPS 13 makes use of an updated cooling system with two fans, two heat pipes, and multiple air inlets to compensate for the extra heat generated by the more powerful processors. For connectivity, the device features a 2×2 Killer Wi-Fi 6 + Bluetooth 5.0 adapter, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, a microSD card reader, and a 3.5mm headphone/microphone combo jack.

Dell XPS 13

The 16:10 display on the Dell XPS 13 2020 comes in two variants, including a 1920×1200 panel with full sRGB coverage and a 3840×2400 UHD+ panel with support for 90 percent of the DCI-P3 space and HDR 400 certification. Both variants are also Dolby Vision certified ensuring good visual quality for content consumption. The notebook comes in a black or white CNC-machined aluminum chassis, it measures in at just 14.8mm thick and weighs between 1.2 and 1.27 kg depending on the touch support. Speaking of touch support, the trackpad on the updated XPS 13 is also slightly larger for better usability.

Powering the new XPS 13 is a 52 watt-hour battery rated for up to 19 hours of use on a single charge for the FHD+ variant. The notebook will be made available in the US and select European countries starting January 7 with prices starting at $999.99 for the Core i5 variant with 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and the FHD+ display. Along with the Windows 10-based models, Dell will also be shipping a Developer Edition featuring Ubuntu 18.04LTS which is expected to be slightly cheaper than the other models. It’s also worth noting that the older XPS 13 powered by Intel’s Comet Lake CPUs will co-exist in the market with the new model.
