Google is working on replacing the Chrome address bar’s old voice search with Google Assistant

Towards the end of last year, Google rolled out a couple of new changes to Chrome on Android, including a couple of features that are currently a work in progress. These include a new UI for Chrome’s new tab page, a screenshot editor, a custom share sheet, a duet-friendly UI for tab groups, and some minor changes to the notification prompts. Now, we have reason to believe that Google is working on replacing the old voice search UI in Chrome’s address bar with the Google Assistant.

We’ve spotted two new commits in the Chromium Gerrit with the topic “Assistant Voice Search.” Although the bug tracker for these commits is private, we can glean a bit of information from the comments and the code change. The comments and code change reveals that once the commits are merged, a new flag called “Omnibox Assistant Voice Search” will appear in chrome://flags#omnibox-assistant-voice-search for Android devices. According to its description, the new flag will “Use Assistant for omnibox voice queries”. The idea behind this change is to send an intent to the Google App to launch the Google Assistant whenever a user taps on the voice search button in Chrome’s address bar/URL bar/omnibox. Currently, when a user taps on the voice search button in Chrome, it brings up the old Android Voice Search UI as seen in the screenshot below.

Google is currently developing this feature to send an intent to the Google App using what’s called a Deep Link, though the Googler responsible for this code change says that the plan is for the deeplink to “go away for V1” of the feature. Another Googler chimed in on the code change, saying that there’s a lot of work that needs to be done before this change can be merged, since the current implementation doesn’t tell Google Web Server (GWS) which device is sending the search query, breaks default search engine functionality, and doesn’t work with search query extraction. Google plans on releasing the feature in Chrome version 85, which is currently scheduled to move to stable during the week of September 15, 2020.

OPPO F15 with 8GB RAM, MediaTek Helio P70, 48MP quad cameras launches in India

For most of 2019, OPPO focussed on introducing and strengthening its Reno lineup while the remaining share of their energy was spent on innovating technologies like the 65W SUPER VOOC 2.0 fast charging. India has been a key market for OPPO because it is currently the only positively growing market for smartphones worldwide and also the biggest after China. For its vision for 2020, the company vowed to assemble 100 million smartphone units in India. As part of this vision, OPPO has launched the OPPO F15 in India as the newest addition to the fashion-friendly F-Series.

The OPPO F15 is the successor to the last year’s OPPO F11, although the two phones are quite similar in terms of specifications. The new additions include an improved Super AMOLED display instead of a TFT previously along with a larger RAM and supplementary cameras, helping OPPO F15 join the club of quad-camera phones. Along with these hardware changes is the new holographic back design in two new white and black colors.

Under the hood, the OPPO F15 comes with a MediaTek Helio P70 SoC, which also powered the F11 and the F11 Pro. Now, 8GB RAM comes as the standard option and with it, there’s 128GB of onboard storage with support for expansion via a dedicated microSD card slot.

In terms of cameras, the OPPO F15 comes with a 48MP primary camera along with an 8MP wide-angle camera, a 2MP bokeh camera, and a 2MP macro camera. While we’re unsure of the exact make of the 48MP sensor, the setup is identical to what we see on the Realme 5 Pro. Considering Realme had spun out of OPPO and still uses the latter’s assembly line, they’re likely to share SKUs. In terms of design too, we see a lot of similarity with the Realme XT and the Realme X2. On the front, the OPPO F15 comes with a 16MP camera along with AI Beautification features including a video mode for the same.

OPPO’s proprietary Super VOOC 3.0 technology enables charging at 20W via the USB-C port. This isn’t exactly new and was also present via the micro USB port on the OPPO F11.

In terms of software, the phone currently runs ColorOS 6.1.2 based on Android 9 Pie. Since the F11 and the F11 Pro users have already had a taste of ColorOS 7 beta with Android 10, so we can expect the update hopefully within 2020 itself.

ZTE rolls out Android 10 for the Axon 10 Pro in Europe

Google rolled out Android 10 in September last year and since then most manufacturers have released Android 10 based ROMs for their devices. OnePlus and Essential were among the first to roll out Android 10 based ROMs for their devices and they were soon joined by Samsung, Xiaomi, LG, and more. Some manufacturers like OPPO have just announced their Android 10-based skins with plans to roll them out to devices in the near future. Chinese OEM ZTE also showcased its MiFavor 10 skin based on Android 10 early last month and the company is now finally rolling it out to the Axon 10 Pro.

As per a recent post on our ZTE Axon 10 Pro forum, the Android 10 update (v. GEN_EU_EEA_A2020G_Pro_V2.3) is now rolling out to Axon 10 Pro users in Europe. The update includes all the new features introduced in Android 10, including the system-wide dark mode, new navigation gestures, and more. However, some users seem to be encountering some issues with the update. For instance, some users have reported that the device animations and face unlock feels a bit slower following the update, while others have mentioned not being able to use the navigation gestures properly. It’s also worth noting that some users weren’t able to install the update on their devices, but this issue is limited to users who’ve unlocked their Axon 10 Pro’s bootloader or installed a custom recovery like TWRP on their device.

The Google Play Store will no longer show notifications for updated apps

Late last month we came across an issue with the Google Play Store which prevented some newly published apps from showing up in search. The bug only brought up related search results when searching for new apps, even though they were definitely live on the platform. Google addressed this issue shortly thereafter and users were once again able to look up new apps in the store. At the time, some users also reported another bug on the Play Store which stopped showing app update notifications in the notification shade. The bug was noticed shortly after Play Store version 17.4 rolled out to users and since then, more and more users have come up to share the issues on Reddit and Google’s Support forums.

Now, as per a recent report from Android Police, it seems like the missing notifications in the Google Play store is intended behavior. A Google spokesperson reached out to the publication to provide further clarification on the issue and revealed that the missing update notifications were a feature and not a bug. Even though the issue was fixed briefly early in December last year, it remerged earlier this month. As of now, there’s no further information from the company regarding its decision to remove Play Store notifications. Users who wish to check the app update status will now have to navigate to the My apps & games section in the Play Store and manually check for updates. Do note that Google won’t push notifications after app updates are successful.

MIUI 11 is the newest big release for Xiaomi smartphones, perhaps even bigger than an Android version jump. Features on Xiaomi devices are dictated more by their MIUI versions than the underlying Android version, so an MIUI version upgrade is an exciting event. MIUI 11 was announced in China in September 2019, bringing along new features such as animated AOD and Horizon Light for supported devices, new font, dynamic sound system, Mi Work and Mi Go app suites, and more changes. The first batch of MIUI 11 Betas was available for a bunch of devices, and over the next few weeks, devices like the Redmi K20 have begun receiving their stable MIUI 11 updates. Now, Xiaomi has officially confirmed that stable MIUI 11 update is rolling out to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro, Redmi 7, Redmi Note 5 Pro and the Poco F1.

The update for the Redmi Note 7 and Poco F1 is rolling out to all devices in a staged manner, while Xiaomi should be making the announcement soon for the Redmi Y3, Redmi 7 and Redmi Note 5 Pro. You can wait for the update to land on the device. Or as an alternative, you can also sideload the update onto your phone using the download links provided below. Even though these are official update files, it is always a good idea to back up the important data on your phone.

You should be able to install the updates on your device by yourself using the local update method. Download the Recovery ROM for your region, place it in your root directory. Then navigate to Settings > About Phone > System Update and then tap on the MIUI icon 7 times. This should reveal the “Choose update package” option in the three-dot menu. Select the option, and then select the file you download and hit “OK”.

Xiaomi’s MIUI 11 rollout has been difficult to track so far, mainly because of the confusing update naming convention and the different updates across multiple regions. Adding to this complexity is the fact there appears to be a very thin demarcation between builds that are only intended for the Mi Pilot beta testing program, meaning that builds assigned for this group will not install on devices with Mi Accounts that do not have the requisite permission. The same builds then get opened up as stable release, creating a lot of confusion — for instance, the same build linked above first failed to install on my Redmi Note 7 Pro, but then appeared through the OTA with the MIUI 11 Beta icon. If you get the error message that the update is for closed beta testers only, you can sideload the update through TWRP.

Huawei claims they sold more 5G smartphones in 2019 than Samsung

Earlier this year, Samsung revealed that it had shipped 6.7 million 5G phones in 2019, accounting for a total of 53.9% of global 5G phone shipments. The company offered a total of five 5G phones last year, including the Galaxy S10 5G, Galaxy Note 10 5G, Galaxy Note 10+ 5G, Galaxy Fold 5G, and the Galaxy A90 5G. This made Samsung the largest supplier of 5G smartphones in the world. However, Huawei begs to differ.

The Chinese smartphone manufacturer, despite facing trouble in the US, claims to have shipped 6.9 million 5G smartphones as of December 2019. The company offered a total of eight 5G smartphones last year, including the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G, Mate 30 5G, Porsche Design Mate 30 RS, Mate 20 X (5G), Nova 6 5G, Mate X, Honor V30 Pro, and the Honor V30. Even though the company offered more 5G smartphones than Samsung, managing to outsell the Korean giant is no small feat for Huawei especially when it struggled to launch new phone models with GMS. However, Huawei hasn’t disclosed a breakdown of which markets it sold the most 5G smartphones in, which leads us to believe that a majority of its sales come from China.

Along with the staggering number of smartphones sold by the company, Huawei also offered the full spectrum of 5G technologies, including 5G infrastructure technology, 5G network equipment, 5G chipsets, and 5G end-user devices.

Google announces when they’ll end support for Chrome Apps on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chrome OS

Towards the end of 2017, we learned that Google was planning to replace Chrome Apps with Progressive Web Apps (PWAs). The company planned on completely removing Chrome Apps support on Windows, Mac, and Linux by Q1 2018. However, Google didn’t follow through with the plan and chose to wait until more Desktop PWAs became available to install on the platforms. The timeline was pushed back several months from the initial plan, with no clear information regarding when Chrome Apps would be phased out. Now, the company has finally released a definite timeline for the process.

As per a recent post on the Chromium Blog, Google will begin phasing out support for Chrome Apps across all operating systems in the following manner:

• March 2020: Chrome Web Store will stop accepting new Chrome Apps. Developers will be able to update existing Chrome Apps through June 2022.
• June 2020: End support for Chrome Apps on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Customers who have Chrome Enterprise and Chrome Education Upgrade will have access to a policy to extend support through December 2020.
• December 2020: End support for Chrome Apps on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
• June 2021: End support for NaCl, PNaCl, and PPAPI APIs.
• June 2021: End support for Chrome Apps on Chrome OS. Customers who have Chrome Enterprise and Chrome Education Upgrade will have access to a policy to extend support through June 2022.
• June 2022: End support for Chrome Apps on Chrome OS for all customers.

Google claims that this change will not impact support for Chrome Extensions. The company plans to continue support and invest in Chrome Extensions on all existing platforms.
