Samsung Galaxy S20 5G series leak gives us full rundown of specifications

Thanks to our own Max Weinbach, this week has been chock full of Samsung Galaxy S20 leaks. We shared the first look at the Samsung Galaxy S20+ in real-life photos, posted the stock wallpapers for download, revealed the new camera features, and made some discoveries with a hands-on video. There was also news this week about the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, and now we can see the full specifications of the series.

As with most Samsung devices, there have been many rumors about the Galaxy S20 series. Going back to the beginning of November, we’ve been hearing rumored specifications and features, but we haven’t seen them all in one place. Today, Ishan Agarwal shared the full spec sheets for the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, Galaxy S20+ 5G, and Galaxy S20 5G. Let’s take a look.

The first thing to point out is that these are the European and Asian Galaxy S20 models, as they have the Exynos 990 processor. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 is expected to be in other regions. The other specifications should be the same across all markets. The AMOLED 120Hz displays are present, all coming in at 3200×1440. They also all have Dolby Atmos Stereo Speaker by AKG, microSD card slots, IP68 water resistance, and Android 10 with One UI 2.

The differences start with the screen sizes. The Galaxy S20 5G has a 6.2-inch display, the Galaxy S20+ 5G is 6.7-inches, and the S20 Ultra is a whopping 6.9-inches. The Galaxy S20 and S20+ have 128GB of storage, while the S20 Ultra has 512GB. Battery size goes from 4,000mAh to 4500mAh to 5,000mAh.

Samsung Galaxy S20+ Samsung Galaxy S20+

Cameras are a big part of the Samsung Galaxy S20 series (both in size and importance). The Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G and S20+ 5G have four rear cameras, while the Galaxy S20 5G has three. The main camera on the S20 and S20+ is 12MP, while the main camera on the Ultra is 108MP. The telephoto camera on the S20+ and S20 is 64MP, while it’s 48MP on the Ultra. All three have a 12MP ultra-wide camera. The S20+ and Ultra have ToF cameras on the back. On the front, the S20+ and S20 feature 10MP selfie cameras, while the Ultra has a beastly 40MP camera.

One thing that we’re not seeing yet is pricing information. It will be interesting to see how big of a price gap there is between the 4G-only Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G. Thankfully, we have less than a month to wait before Samsung Unpacked on February 11th.

Google is working to bring Steam support to Chrome OS

There are a lot of benefits to owning a Chromebook. They are typically affordable, lightweight, have good battery life, and Chrome OS has just enough functionality for most people. However, one reason you might not want a Chromebook is if you intend to do a lot of gaming on the go. According to a new report, Google is working with Valve to bring official Steam support to Chrome OS.

This report comes from Android Police’s David Ruddock, who cites a meeting with Kan Liu, director of product management for Chrome OS, at CES 2020. Ruddock says Steam for Chrome OS would be enabled by Chrome OS’ Linux compatibility. Though Liu would not directly confirm it, Ruddock says he implied Google was working in direct cooperation with Valve on this project.

It’s possible right now to run the Steam Linux client on Chrome OS using Crostini, but official support would have much-improved performance and reliability. Getting games to play on the current setup is not super easy. Which brings up the question of what games would be possible with official Steam support. Most Chromebooks on the market have low-end CPUs and limited 3D acceleration. Liu said we could expect that to change with AMD Chromebooks coming in the future.

“Premium” Chromebooks with high-end specifications are rare, but we’ve been seeing more of them in recent years. Last week at CES, for example, Samsung announced the Galaxy Chromebook with Intel’s 10th Gen Core processors and Intel UHD Graphics. Official Steam support may not be enough for people to consider Chromebooks as “gaming laptops,” but it would certainly open up many more gaming opportunities. Unfortunately, Ruddock says it could be years before this project becomes a reality.

Xiaomi will launch a lot more flagship Mi smartphones in India this year

Xiaomi has found great success in the Indian market throughout 2019. This has been largely thanks to Redmi smartphones: Redmi was spun off into a sub-brand starting last year in order to allow the company to focus better on the mid-range market. Under this Redmi umbrella, they have managed to sell tons of mid-range and upper mid-range phones such as the Redmi Note 7/8 (and even some flagship-level ones, too, such as the Redmi K20 Pro). What has been notably absent from the Indian market, though, has been Xiaomi’s higher-end offerings: devices such as the Xiaomi Mi 9 and Mi 9 Pro 5G last year didn’t see a proper Indian launch.

This could be attributed to the fact that mid-range devices are wildly more popular in India for several reasons and it makes sense for Xiaomi to focus more on this market. There is still a market for high-end smartphones in India, as Apple’s iPhone XR was one of the best-selling smartphones in India during 2019. According to Raghu Reddy, Head of Categories at Xiaomi India, the company wants to offer in India the same lineup they currently have over in China and has noted that both Redmi and Mi smartphones are going to be markedly different. To this effect, Mr. Reddy declared that “2020 is the year where we’re looking to change that in a big way. You will see a lot more of Mi premium flagship devices that will make their way into India.”

With Xiaomi’s market share in the mid-range segment dipping with the rise of BBK-backed smartphone brands such as OPPO, Realme and OnePlus, opting for launching premium smartphones in India under the Mi brand could potentially dent Apple and OnePlus’s dominance in the flagship segment. Xiaomi’s Mi Note 10 smartphone, which is part of this premium lineup, is currently about to launch in India, and given this new strategy, we’re likely to see devices such as the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro launch in this market as well.

Are you excited for Xiaomi flagships in India?

[Update: Rolling out] Google Chrome for PCs is getting a new media control tool with support for Chromecast

Update 1 (01/17/2020 @ 8:10 AM ET): The new media control tool has officially been announced for the Stable release branch for Google Chrome for PC. Scroll to the bottom for more information. The article as published on December 22, 2019, is preserved as below.

A lot of us listen to music through our web browsers these days – be it through the likes of YouTube Music, Soundcloud, Google Play Music, or any of the other countless cloud-based music services that are out there. It can be quite annoying to control the music playing in the background though, especially if, like me, you may have a lot of tabs open at any given time. A new feature that was announced on the official Chromium blog – though the post was quickly taken down – is a media controller that can be accessed from anywhere inside of Google Chrome.

As also spotted by Chrome Story, there’s even more to the feature than meets the eye. It appears to work with Chromecasts so that you can control casted content from just about anywhere in Google Chrome, according to the official description of a new flag called “Global Media Controls for Cast”. A similar functionality used to exist where you could go to chrome://cast in your URL bar and control currently casting devices on your home network, though it no longer works.

The original feature, simply dubbed “Global Media Controls”, is already possible to enable now. It actually launched as part of Chrome OS earlier this year but took some time to reach Google Chrome on other platforms such as Windows, MacOS, and Linux. The media controls look exactly as they would on Android – a pause/play button, the currently playing URL, and the title. Sites can also implement more advanced functionality such as skipping, fast forward, and album art. The notification even changes color to match the currently playing content, just like on Android. The feature is similar to what rolled out as part of Chrome OS 79, which saw media controls for websites accessible from the lock screen.

At the moment, YouTube fully supports it and Soundcloud works as well. You can enable the feature and try it out for yourself simply by navigating to chrome://flags/#global-media-controls in your address bar. Let us know what you think!

Update: Global Media Controls now rolling out to Google Chrome’s Stable release channel

In a blog post, Google has announced that the new media control hub is now rolling out to all users of Google Chrome on desktop. With Chrome’s latest update, users can just click the icon in the top right corner of Chrome on desktop, open the new media hub and manage what’s playing from there.

Xiaomi India spins-off POCO into an independent brand

Xiaomi started off POCO as a sub-brand back in August 2018, with Xiaomi’s then Lead Product Manager Mr. Jai Mani at the helm of the brand. POCO had a very successful start with the POCO F1, which was launched in the same month in India as well as internationally. POCO’s beginnings echoed that of OnePlus, and the POCO F1 brought on board some of the same qualities that people had loved on the OnePlus One. Now, as was done with the Redmi brand, Xiaomi has announced that POCO will now operate as its own independent brand.

Xiaomi’s Vice President and Xiaomi India’s Managing Director Mr. Manu Kumar Jain took to Twitter to announce the new company structure for POCO. In a separate press release, Xiaomi India expanded on the same and mentioned that the new standalone brand will now run independent of Xiaomi, and will have its own team and go-to-market strategy.

Reacting to the change, POCO India’s official social media handles changed their display pictures to a black color image, with an Easter Egg hidden within. If you download the image and change the brightness and contrast, you can spot “HELLO WORLD!” written in the image.

POCO’s revival as an independent brand comes long after Mr. Jai Mani’s departure from the sub-brand and Xiaomi. With his exit, questions were repeatedly asked on whether we would ever see a POCO F2, a testimony to the immense popularity and practical utility of the re-imagined flagship killer. This spinoff clearly shows that the brand is not done yet, and that there will be more to come in the near future.

Curiously, a device named POCO X2 was spotted in the Geekbench database. Now, we know Geekbench benchmark listings can be very easily faked (because we proved the same with the fake POCO F1 Lite listing), and hence, we don’t trust them as reliable sources of information. That still stands true, but this new announcement from Xiaomi ends up providing a small shred of corroboration to the Geekbench listing — mainly that the brand is not dead yet. The “POCO X2” showed up with the device codename as phoenixin. which is the Indian variant of phoenix, which in turn is the device codename for the Redmi K30 4G. This makes little sense — for one, the Redmi K-series already exists in India, so everyone naturally expects a successor to the Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro to be launched in India. Secondly, POCO is spun off into an independent brand, so the POCO X2 (which would essentially be a rebranded Redmi K30 4G) would essentially go against such independence. So our advice is to continue taking Geekbench listings with a pinch of salt, until further corroborations.
