Tasker 5.9.2 beta lets you run ADB shell commands without being tethered to a PC

When it comes to automation apps on Android, Tasker is undoubtedly the preferred choice of a majority of users. Despite the fact that the app doesn’t have a beginner-friendly UI, Tasker is the go-to choice for many power users due to the vast variety of plugins it offers. For instance, the developers released Tasker v5.9 early last month which introduced a new feature called Logcat events, which opened up a whole new realm of automation possibilities. Now, the app is getting another significant update in the beta channel which brings even more to the table.

As per a recent post on Reddit, Tasker v5.9.2 beta is now rolling out to users and it brings a new feature that will let you run shell commands without being tethered to a PC. For the unaware, this new feature essentially lets you run all actions that you can run in ADB shell when connected to the PC, allowing you to do a lot of things that most regular apps can’t do otherwise. However, the feature still doesn’t let you do a lot of things that require root-like modification of system files. Here are a couple of things that you can do with the new feature:

  • Manage permissions of other apps (cmd appops)
  • Control overlays (cmd overlay)
  • Toggle airplane mode, mobile data, etc. (svc commands)

While this new feature raised privacy concerns in the original Reddit thread, we can assure you that it’s safe to use, provided you just authorize the RSA key for Tasker and don’t blindly authorize it for every PC/app that requests to access ADB on your device. If you’re interested in learning how exactly this feature works, you can follow this link for a great explanation submitted by a Redditor. The TL;DR version is that when a user runs “adb tcpip 5555”, it causes the device to listen for a TCP/IP connection on port 5555, which allows Tasker to send commands “remotely” to the ADB client. Normally this process is used to let you send ADB commands from a PC to your phone while it’s untethered, but in this case, Tasker is using it to keep the adb client alive so it can send shell commands to it.

If you’re interested in trying out the new feature for yourself, you can sign up for the beta by following this link. In case you’re already enrolled in the beta and don’t wish to wait for the Google Play update, you can download the updated app here.

Google Chrome may soon let you copy images directly to Android’s clipboard

When it comes to web browsers on Android, Google Chrome is arguably one of the most used browser apps out there and for good reason. The browser packs in a ton of useful features and Google keeps introducing new features with each successive update. Towards the end of last year, Google rolled out a couple of new changes to Chrome, including a few features that are currently a work in progress. These include a new UI for Chrome’s new tab page, a screenshot editor, a custom share sheet, a duet-friendly UI for tab groups, and some minor changes to the notifications prompt. Last week, we discovered two new commits in the Chromium Gerrit which suggested that Google is working to replace the old voice search in Chrome with the Google Assistant. And now, we’ve discovered another commit in the Chromium Gerrit which reveals that Chrome might soon get a new feature to help users easily copy images to the Android clipboard.

Google Chrome image context menu

While the UI review link in the commit isn’t accessible to non-Googlers, the commit description and code reveals that Chrome will soon get a new item in the context menu to facilitate the feature. Once the feature is enabled, users will be able to long-press on any image in Chrome and copy the image to Android’s clipboard for easier sharing. When compared to the current implementation, which requires users to use the share menu to send images to friends, this new method will be much easier to use and will help users share images with just a couple of taps. Since we can’t access the UI review link, we can’t see exactly what the new feature will look like, but we speculate that the context menu (seen above) will have a new “copy image” action for this feature. It’s worth noting that once the commit is merged, the flag can be toggled at chrome://flags#context-menu-copy-image.

TomTom will supply its mapping service to Huawei

Late last year in September, Huawei launched its latest Mate series of flagship smartphones. However, owing to the political situation between the company and the USA, it was forced to release the Mate 30 series without the most crucial part of Android — Google Play Services. At the time, Huawei had no alternative to the proprietary Google Mobile Services (GMS). But soon thereafter, the company revealed its own Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) and HMS Core. To provide location and mapping services, HMS Core included Location Kit and Map Kit — which are alternatives to Google’s Fused Location Provider and Maps SDK. However, the company still didn’t have access to Google’s mapping data. Now, according to a recent report from Reuters, the company has partnered up with TomTom for its mapping services.

As per the report, Dutch navigation and digital mapping company TomTom revealed that it has closed a deal with Huawei Technology for the use of its maps and services in apps. The deal will give Huawei access to TomTom’s maps, traffic information, and navigation software, which will allow the company to develop apps for its smartphones. TomTom’s spokesperson Remco Meerstra revealed that the deal had been closed some time ago, but had not been made public by the company. However, Meerstra refused to provide any additional details regarding the agreement. Huawei is expected to launch its next flagship range of smartphones — the Huawei P40 series — later this year in March. The upcoming devices will utilize TomTom’s mapping data and any default Maps application that Huawei offers on its future devices will likely use TomTom’s maps.

Realme is treading with a fast pace, especially when it comes to launching new devices. At the same event in Madrid, Spain, the company also launched the Realme X2, which is the Realme XT but with faster 30W charging and a Snapdragon 730G for better performance, and the Realme Q (Realme 5 Pro in India). But one aspect of Realme phones that has left user expectations sore is the software and the company is now working to bring the experience closer to stock Android with ColorOS 7.

In the meantime, Realme is also working on making Android 10 available to the users and had earlier announced its timeline for the update for several older devices. They have now announced the Android 10 roll-out schedule for newer devices including the Realme X2 Pro and the Realme X2. Huawei P40 Pro “Premium Edition” leaks with five rear cameras and ceramic back

Huawei is expected to launch its P40 lineup of flagship smartphones in the first quarter of this year. However, late last week leaked press renders of the upcoming Huawei P40 Pro surfaced online, giving us our first look at the device. The renders revealed that the device will feature a quad-camera setup, a curved display, and a pill-shaped punch-hole cutout to house the dual selfie cameras. Now, renowned leakster @evleaks has revealed that Huawei will be offering another variant of the P40 Pro with a slightly more premium design and features.

Huawei P40 Pro Premium Edition

As per the latest leaked renders shared on Twitter, Huawei will be launching a P40 Pro “Premium Edition” alongside the regular P40 Pro and the P40. Unlike the regular P40, the Huawei P40 Pro “Premium Edition” will feature a ceramic back with a penta-camera setup. The penta-camera setup on the premium edition device is expected to feature a periscope zoom lens, a regular wide-angle lens, an ultra-wide-angle lens, and a ToF sensor like the regular P40 Pro.

However, we currently have no clue about the fifth sensor on the device. All of these cameras are enclosed within a rectangular camera module which fits the general aesthetic of other late 2019/2020 smartphones, much like the Galaxy S20 lineup. It’s also worth noting that the P40 Pro “Premium Edition” isn’t the first device to feature a ceramic backplate. We’ve previously seen a similar aesthetic on several devices, including the Xiaomi Mi MIX series, the Galaxy S10+, and Huawei’s own Ascend P7.

Xbox Console Streaming for Android now available as a global preview

After a soft launch in the US and the UK late last year, Microsoft is now expanding the Xbox Console Streaming preview to more markets. The feature is still under beta as it’s only available to Xbox Insiders, but now those living outside the US‌ and UK can also try out the feature and provide their feedback to help the company weed out bugs and odd behaviors. To be clear, Xbox Console Streaming is not to be confused with Project xCloud – Microsoft’s cloud game streaming service. Instead, Console Streaming lets you play your locally installed Xbox One games on your Android phone or tablet — just like PlayStation Remote Play.

To participate, you’ll need to be an Xbox Insider and enroll your Xbox One console in one of the Update Preview Rings. You’ll also need to install the Xbox Game Streaming preview app from the Google Play Store. The app will walk you through the setup process on your Xbox One and will also run a set of tests to ensure that your network connection, console, and controller meet the minimum speed and performance requirements for a smooth experience. Here’s what you’ll need to get Xbox Console Streaming running:

  • A phone or tablet running Android 6.0 or higher, with Bluetooth 4.0
  • A Bluetooth-enabled Xbox One Wireless Controller
  • A Microsoft Account with Xbox profile, and high-speed Internet
  • Upstream bandwidth: At least 4.75 Mbps required, 9 Mbps preferred
  • Network latency: 125 ms or less required, 60 ms or less preferred
  • Console settings: Power setting must be Instant-on

Once set up, you should be able to stream any of your installed Xbox One games, including Xbox Play Game Pass titles, to your Android phone. Expanding the Xbox Console Streaming preview to more markets will allow Microsoft to gather more feedback from a broader userbase with their unique challenges and different playing environments and help further improve the service ahead of its public release.

Microsoft hasn’t given any timeframe as to when they plan to make the Xbox Console Streaming service available to all users.
