[Update 2: On Sale February 6th] Motorola reboots the Razr with a vertically folding display

Update 2 (1/22/20 @ 9:50 AM ET): The Motorola Razr foldable phone will officially go on sale on February 6th.

Update 1 (12/20/19 @ 1:15 PM ET): Motorola is pushing back the Razr pre-order and launch dates slightly due to high demand.

After months of anticipation, Motorola has officially rebooted its iconic Razr brand. The new Motorola Razr is a flip phone just like its predecessors were back before Android and iOS smartphones started to dominate the landscape. However, the new 2019 Razr uses cutting-edge display technology to achieve this iconic design. When you flip the phone open, you’re greeted with a front that’s made entirely of screen with no room for a keyboard at the bottom. Unlike the Samsung Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate X which unfold horizontally into what are essentially tablets, the new Motorola Razr unfolds vertically into a…regular smartphone.

Because there’s only one display on the inside of the device, Motorola has added a second display on the outside so you won’t have to constantly flip the phone open just to read your notifications or do basic tasks. The outer display is very small and low resolution, so you won’t be able to use it for most of the tasks you associate with a modern smartphone. Still, that doesn’t make it useless, as Motorola has designed the software to let the outer display handle tasks like showing notifications, take selfies, play music, or use Google Assistant. Content seamlessly transitions between the closed display and the main display, according to Motorola.

What’s most impressive about the Motorola razr design is the fact that, when closed, there’s barely a gap between the two folded halves of the display. The crease is also barely visible, which isn’t the case on the Galaxy Fold or Mate X. That’s based on early photos we’ve seen of the device, though, so we’re hoping to get our hands on this device so we can compare it to the Galaxy Fold.

The 2019 Motorola razr retails at $1499 and will be available in the U.S. exclusively on Verizon Wireless. The phone will go on preorder starting December 26, 2019, and will go on sale in Verizon and Walmart stores and online on January 9, 2020. The phone comes with razr earbuds, a set of USB-C headsets tuned by Denon Audio. Cases will be available from Otterbox, Kate Spade, and more. The phone will only be sold in a Noir Black color.

Motorola has confirmed the device is coming to India, and TechRadar is reporting the device will launch in Australia as well as other countries in Latin America and Asia. We’ll update this post as we learn more.


Update 1: Delayed

There was a ton of excitement around the announcement of the Motorola Razr last month. It turns out the hype surpassed Motorola’s expectations as they are now delaying the launch due to high demand. Pre-orders were planned for December 26th with a January launch. The company is now delaying those dates, but they aren’t giving new ones. Motorola does say it doesn’t “anticipate a significant shift from our original availability timeline,” which leads us to believe it won’t be a long wait.

Since its announcement in November, the new Motorola razr has received unparalleled excitement and interest from consumers. Demand has been high, and as a result, has quickly outgrown supply predictions.

Motorola has decided to adjust razr’s presale and launch timing to better meet consumer demand. We are working to determine the appropriate quantity and schedule to ensure that more consumers have access to razr at launch.

We do not anticipate a significant shift from our original availability timeline.

Update 2: On Sale February 6th

After a brief delay, Motorola and Verizon are now moving forward with the launch of the Razr reboot. The nostalgic foldable phone is available for pre-order starting on January 26th and will be in stores on February 6th. The phone is $62.49 a month for 24 months on Verizon Device Payment or $1,499.99 straight up. Verizon is offering a number of deals to go along with the launch.

During preorder, switch to Verizon and get up to $700 off the Motorola razr on device payment. Here’s how: Save up to $500 when you trade-in an eligible smartphone and sign up for Verizon Unlimited, plus switchers get an additional $200 prepaid MasterCard. Existing customers can save up to $300 with eligible trade-ins when you upgrade your phone.

NFCScreenOff mod enables scanning NFC tags when your Android phone is locked

Have you ever wanted to be able to scan NFC tags when your phone screen is off? That’s not a possibility as there are security risks in doing so – imagine if someone could trigger a mobile payment from your smartphone while the screen is off? There are other security risks as well, but the bottom line is that it’s not possible to activate and read NFC tags while your smartphone screen is off anyway. That is, without root access. NFCScreenOff by XDA Member lapwat is a Magisk Module that you can enable on your phone to always read NFC tags even when your screen is locked.

While this may be useful for those who use NFC tags in their home for automation, you can’t use it for in-store contactless payments as it breaks SafetyNet. It is not a systemless modification, as it directly patches and modifies the system NfcNci.apk in order to always return true when it polls whether the screen is unlocked or not. It should work on most Android 9 and Android 10 devices, though there is a chance that it may not work on specific smartphones. The developer hopes that in the future, the mod can be done systemless to allow for mobile payments.

Find My Device 2.4 prepares to add support for finding your Bluetooth Fast Pair accessories

Back at Google I/O in May 2019, Google announced lots of new software, devices, and features. One such announcement that they made pertained to the Google Fast Pair Service (GFPS) integrating with Find My Device. GFPS is a part of Google Play Services. Fast Pair does, more or less, exactly what it says on the tin and allows a device owner to quickly pair their smartphone to a Bluetooth device. Fast Paired devices are synced to the user’s Google account, so that they can be connected to multiple phones via a shared Google account, rather than needing to go through the pairing process on each individual device. Find My Device v2.4 takes a step towards preparing to add support for finding your Fast Paired accessories, according to new strings added to the app.

An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.

Of course, it’s not going to be perfect and will ultimately still be reliant on having been paired to your smartphone at some point. Google had said in their announcement that you’ll be able to view the rough location on a map that they were last spotted, though that will have been reported by the phone that they were paired to. You’ll be able to see when you last had a connection to them, but that’s about it. One pretty cool feature that Google also mentioned will be available is the ability to set a Fast Paired device to ring once it’s in range of your smartphone.

There’s no real timeframe on when this feature will be implemented, but if Google is gearing up to add support for it after it was announced 6 months ago, it can’t be too far off. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this feature, as while it may be limited in some aspects, it’s certainly better than nothing.

1Controller Magisk Module adds PlayStation Dualshock and Xbox game controller support to rooted Android devices

Over the last couple of years, mobile gaming has evolved from casual games to a burgeoning industry chock full of a variety of eSports titles. We also saw the release of some amazing gaming smartphones and along with that came a slew of gaming accessories, including controllers, secondary displays, cooling fans, and more. However, Android still lacked support for popular accessories like the PlayStation DualShock controller and the Xbox game controller. Which is exactly where the 1Controller Magisk module comes in.

While Android devices can connect to any wired or wireless controllers, as long as the controller in question supports a standard port or wireless protocol, there’s no guarantee that button presses on the controller will do what you want them to do or even work on Android. This is due to the fact that the Android framework has keylayout files that define what actions are performed when certain buttons are pressed on a controller and all devices don’t include support for all keylayout files. For instance, there’s a keylayout file for the Xbox One S controller, one for the DualShock 4 controller, and there’s even a generic keylayout file that many Chinese game controllers build around. Even though Android has previously added support for a few popular controllers, like the DualShock 4, the Xbox Elite controller, and the Xbox One S wireless controller, there’s still a chance that they might not work with your device.

In case you have an Android device that doesn’t properly support one of the several popular game controllers, then the 1Controller Magisk module may fix that. The module introduces the keylayout files for several popular game controllers, including the PlayStation DualShock 4, DualShock 3, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Switch Pro controller. If you have any of these controllers lying around and you wish to use them with your phone, you can now do that by downloading the 1Controller Magisk module from the link below. But before you do that, do note that the module doesn’t work on devices running MIUI 10 and has a high delay when connected to a DualShock 4 controller over Bluetooth.

[Update: Mint Green Color] Huawei P40 Pro leaked render shows off quad cameras, curved display

Huawei keeps straddling along. The Chinese company is now preparing to launch its upcoming flagships, the Huawei P40 lineup, very soon. We’ve been seeing several rumors and leaks about the design these past few days, and we even got a glimpse at some press renders of the Huawei P40. Now, though, it’s time for the Huawei P40 Pro, usually the more interesting one out of the pair, to come out of the shadow with leaked press renders thanks to the folks at AndroidHeadlines.

These leaked renders show us a device not that different from the Huawei P40, and its most outstanding design feature is very clearly its rear cameras. Huawei is known for producing powerful, award-winning cameras, and while we can’t attest to the P40 Pro’s quality yet, we do know that it will carry a notable camera bump with quad rear cameras. The bottom camera has a square-ish look which could potentially indicate a periscope zoom lens. The device has been rumored to carry support for 10x optical zoom, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see.

As well as two standard-looking lenses, there is also what appears to be either a macro lens or a ToF sensor to the right of the camera bump. All of this is enclosed within a rectangular, black camera bump, fitting the general aesthetic of other 2020/2019 smartphones such as the Galaxy S20 lineup, the Pixel 4 and the iPhone 11 lineup.

There is also a pill-shaped hole-punch camera, similar to the one in the Galaxy S10+, carrying a dual-camera setup. The display itself is curved, although the curve doesn’t seem as extreme as the one in the Mate 30 Pro, which fits the term “waterfall display”, given how there is a volume rocker–something that was removed in the Mate 30 Pro to give space for the screen curve.

Both the Huawei P40 and P40 Pro are expected to be announced during the first quarter of the year, so expect to see the phones very soon.
