Stadia’s free tier will be available first to Pro subscribers, 5 new games incoming

With the launch of Google Stadia, the company promised that there would be a free tier within “the next few months.” The idea of a free tier is that potential-buyers can test the service before going all-in on a kit and a subscription, in order to avoid unnecessary spending in case your internet connection can’t keep up. Currently, the Founder’s edition of Google Stadia costs $129, with a $10 monthly subscription required after a three-month trial. That monthly subscription nets you access to a handful of complimentary games, and you’ll need to purchase any others. Stadia’s free tier is finally coming, though it’ll be first available to Pro subscribers, and there are 5 new complimentary games set to arrive as well.

Those who purchased Founder’s editions will have received, at the earliest, a beta code on the 19th of November 2019. That means the three-month subscriptions are set to end in less than a week’s time, and those who may have purchased games were worried that they would not be able to access them anymore if they canceled their subscription. The idea of the free tier is that you can still play your own purchased games on the service, but any free games redeemed through the Pro subscription will be removed from your account. Games will also be limited to 1080p streams. Google confirmed all of that in a statement to Android Police.

While we know that the free tier of Stadia is widely anticipated, we aren’t announcing specific timing just yet, beyond Phil’s interview in Protocol. If a gamer opts not to renew their Stadia Pro membership, they will lose access to the games and discounts offered exclusively to Pro subscribers, but they will be able keep playing the games they purchased, and they will have access to the Stadia store to purchase additional games.

Google has also announced that five new games are going to be available for purchase on Stadia, ahead of more games like DOOM Eternal and Orcs Must Die.

Those games are available for purchase now on Google Stadia. Stadia is still undergoing a lot of development, and for example, should be available on Android TV in the future.

Broadcom’s new BCM4389 chip brings Wi-Fi 6E support to smartphones

Wi-Fi 6E is an extension to the Wi-Fi 6 standard and it lets devices operate in the 6 GHz spectrum. An additional 1200MHz can be split into fourteen 80MHz or seven wider 160MHz channels, thus offering higher throughputs. It was announced just over a month ago by the Wi-Fi Alliance, but the FCC still hasn’t approved the use of the 6 GHz spectrum. Though, it looks like Broadcom is placing its bets to become among one of the first to adopt it. The company’s new BCM4389 is a WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.0 compatible chip with a couple of welcoming features.

BCM4389 uses a 16nm manufacturing process in comparison to 28nm found on its predecessor, BCM4375. If you need a refresher of the brain, the smaller the nanometer manufacturing process of the chipset, the smaller the distance between transistors. This results in faster and more power-efficient operating of the device. BCM4389 also supports Tri-band Simultaneous (TBS) radio which uses the third radio for background scans and checks which doesn’t require much power.

Broadcom also promised Bluetooth improvements, such as two times faster pairing time and the support of BT MIMO. The latter will theoretically eliminate audio chopping on Bluetooth connected devices. BCM4389 also doubles the maximum bandwidth capability to 2 Gbps in smartphones.

Broadcom chipsets are used by companies such as Apple and Samsung in their mainstream smartphone series. I would expect the arrival of Wi-Fi 6E supported devices by next year. FCC approval should also be in place by that time.

Ambient Mode will bring enhanced lockscreen functionality to Chrome OS

Over the last couple of months, we’ve learned about several features from Android making their way over to Chrome OS. Back in December last year, Chrome OS 79 introduced media controls on the lock screen, something that we’ve had on Android for quite a while. Then, early in January, Chrome OS 80 introduced Android 10-like gestures to the platform. Following that, Google released a new Quick Answers feature on the Chrome OS Canary channel, which works quite a lot like the contextual shortcuts on Android and provides information/relevant suggestions for highlighted texts. Now, we have reason to believe that Chrome OS could be getting Android’s new Ambient Mode soon.

Google announced the new Ambient Mode at the IFA trade show last year. The mode essentially allows you to turn any Android smartphone or tablet into a smart display. You can then use it to show information from your calendar, the current weather, notifications, reminders, music controls, and even smart home controls. Initially, the feature was only made available for a couple of devices. Just this month, however, OnePlus announced that it was also releasing the feature on all its phones starting from the OnePlus 3. Now, we’ve spotted a new commit in the Chromium Gerrit that adds a new feature flag. The flag description states “enable Ambient Mode to show an enhanced lock screen with more functions”, thus making it clear that this Ambient Mode in Chrome OS will be for more than just showing images.

Information about this new Ambient Mode was first spotted by ChromeStory on the Chromium Gerrit back in July last year. At the time, the only information that was known was that the feature would let you view your wallpapers as a slideshow on the lock screen. Following this new revelation, we can now be sure that this feature is related to the Ambient Mode on Android and might allow users to view information from their calendar, the weather app, notifications, reminders, and more right on the lock screen. Once the recently spotted commit is merged, a flag for the feature will be accessible at chrome://flags#enable-ambient-mode.

FCC certifies a follow-up to the ZTE Quartz smartwatch with Verizon LTE support

Back in 2017, Chinese OEM ZTE launched a T-Mobile exclusive smartwatch called the ZTE Quartz. The Android Wear 2.0 smartwatch was the company’s first foray into the wearables segment and it featured a 1.4-inch 400×400 display. The smartwatch was powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 2100 SoC, coupled with 768MB of RAM and 4GB of onboard storage. With a 500 mAh battery, IP67 certification, and 3G connectivity the smartwatch was a compelling buy at just $192. Now, it seems like ZTE is planning on launching a follow-up smartwatch soon.

The upcoming ZTE smartwatch was recently certified by the FCC and the listing reveals a few details about the device. For starters, the smartwatch goes by the model name ZW20, which suggests that it will be a follow-up to the ZTE Quartz smartwatch that had the model number ZW10. Unlike its predecessor though, the upcoming smartwatch will include support for LTE on band 13 which, most likely, means that it will be a Verizon exclusive. The listing further mentions that the watch includes support for a “voice function”, which could mean that it has a microphone, and that it will be available in two watchband color options. Additionally, the listing also states that the watch will support VoIP and VoLTE.

Sadly though, the listing doesn’t mention the software running on the watch, so we can’t be sure if it’ll run Google’s Wear OS or not. But it does include an image of the smartwatch which gives us a few hints about its design. As you can see in the image above, the ZTE smartwatch will feature a square dial with rounded edges, two buttons on either side and what looks like a heart rate sensor on the back. It’s worth noting that the original ZTE Quartz smartwatch didn’t include a heart rate sensor, so it makes sense for ZTE to include one this time around.

LineageOS 16 adds support for the Realme 3 Pro, Sony Xperia Z3, and Nubia Z17

Over the last couple of months, several devices have received official support for LineageOS 16 — the popular Android 9 Pie-based custom ROM. These custom ROM builds offer old devices a new lease on life and allow users to experience Android 9 Pie on devices that otherwise wouldn’t have received an official update. Thanks to the LineageOS 16 support, devices like the Samsung Galaxy S4, S4 Active, Moto X (2014), LG G3, ZenFone 3, Yandex Phone, Galaxy S3 Neo, and Redmi Note 4X can enjoy all the features Google introduced in Android Pie. Now, the LineageOS team has extended support for a few more devices, including the Realme 3 Pro, Sony Xperia Z3, and Nubia Z17.

Realme has been doing a great job of keeping the Realme 3 Pro from last year up to date. The company recently released the official Android 10 update with Realme UI for the device, bringing all the new features introduced in the latest iteration of Android and a brand new user interface. However, the new UI still doesn’t offer a stock Android-like experience that the company had promised previously. Now, thanks to the LineageOS 16 support, Realme 3 Pro users will be able to enjoy a stock Android-like ROM on their devices, albeit with Android 9 Pie features.

The LineageOS team has also extended LineageOS 16 support for the Xperia Z3, which would prove to be quite beneficial for owners of the 2014 flagship. The device was initially released with Android 4.4 Kitkat and was updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow over the course of two years. Since then, the device has received no official updates and users have had to rely on unofficial custom ROMs to enjoy the latest features in Android. Thanks to the official LineageOS 16 support, users will now be able to enjoy Android 9 Pie on their devices.

Finally, the Nubia Z17 from 2017 has also received official LineageOS 16 support. The flagship device was initially released with Android 7.1.1 Nougat and the company didn’t provide any Android updates following its release. Nubia Z17 owners will now be able to breathe new life into their devices with the official LineageOS 16 support and make full use of its still-relevant hardware.

[Update: 2nd March] OPPO Reno3 Pro 4G variant with 44MP dual-front cameras will launch in India soon

OPPO is the fourth-largest smartphone vendor in India, ranking below Xiaomi, Vivo, and Samsung, and above Realme. The company’s Reno range of smartphones proved to be popular in the Indian smartphone market. The OPPO Reno 10x Zoom competed with the OnePlus 7 Pro and other flagships in the online smartphone market, while the regular OPPO Reno and its successor, the OPPO Reno2, were more heavily marketed in the offline market. According to IDC, the Reno2 was a great seller in India in Q4 2019. It was succeeded in China by the OPPO Reno3 and the OPPO Reno3 Pro 5G. Both of these phones haven’t been made available in other international markets yet. Now, Tasleem Arif, Vice President at OPPO India, has officially confirmed that a 4G variant of the Reno3 Pro will be arriving in India soon. He also states that there is a pipeline of OPPO products that will be released with 5G versions in India this year. The Reno3 Pro in India, therefore, won’t be a 5G phone, which is just as well when considering the fact there are no 5G networks in India yet, and they probably won’t arrive until 2022.

Separately, 91mobiles reports that the Reno3 Pro in India will come with a different set of specifications. The publication exclusively leaked a promotional banner for the phone. The major change will be that it will have a 44MP front camera in dual punch setup, joined by a depth sensor. This will be the first phone to have a 44MP front camera, but this isn’t the highest megapixel resolution for a front camera as the ASUS 6Z (ZenFone 6) uses a 48MP flip camera. The OPPO Reno3 Pro 5G in China, on the other hand, comes with a single 32MP front camera. The teaser also indicates that the Indian Reno3 Pro will have a flat display, instead of having a curved display of the China variant.

The banner confirms the presence of a 44MP dual punch-hole camera. The phone will be available in a Blue gradient color. Its rear cameras are expected to consist of a 48MP Sony IMX586 primary sensor, 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, 13MP telephoto camera, and a 2MP monochrome sensor. This is the same configuration as the China 5G variant.

The other major change will be the SoC. The 4G Indian variant of the Reno3 Pro won’t feature the 5G Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chip. 91mobiles doesn’t report the exact SoC, but our guesses include the 4G Qualcomm Snapdragon 730. The rest of the specifications could be different from the China variant as well, so we will have to wait for the announcement to learn more. We can expect Android 10-based ColorOS 7 out of the box.

OPPO has confirmed that the Reno3 Pro 4G variant is launching in India on 2nd March 2020. OPPO also confirms the presence of a 44MP front camera in dual punch-hole setup.
