Xiaomi launches Redmi Earbuds S TWS earphones in India for ₹1,799

Truly wireless (TWS) earbuds have seen a significant uptick in popularity over the last year or so. Thanks to the trend kickstarted by Apple’s AirPods, several Android manufacturers have released their own take on the hot new accessory. Following the launch of the Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 earlier this month, Xiaomi’s sub-brand Redmi has now also joined the TWS earbuds fray with its new Redmi Earbuds S launched in India today.

The Redmi Earbuds S comes in a pill-shaped case and has a low-profile compact design, unlike most other AirPods-clones out there. The earbuds ditch the stem-like design shape and instead opts for a more discrete look, one that doesn’t stick out of your ears that much.

The TWS earbuds are rated for 12 hours of music playback with the charging case and up to 4 hours with just the earbuds. The feature-packed earbuds offer IPX4 splash resistance, support for any voice assistant of your choice, a 122ms low-latency gaming mode, Bluetooth 5.0, and more.

Each earbud features a single tactile button that can be used to answer calls with a single click, reject calls with a long press, play/pause music with single clicks, and long press on both earbuds to launch the gaming mode. Much like the Mi True Wireless Earphones 2, the Earbuds S has been tuned to suit the Indian audience and offer a bass-heavy sound profile.

The Redmi Earbuds S will be available in a single matte black color variant, at a price of ₹1,799 (~$24) via mi.com, Amazon.in, Xiaomi’s Mi Home stores, and other offline retail partners starting from May 27th at 12PM.

[Update: Flag Working] Google Chrome tests showing Google Search results in a dark theme that syncs with Android 10’s dark mode

Update 1 (05/26/2020 @ 01:30 AM ET): The flag that lets Google Chrome darken Google Search results is now live and working. Scroll to the bottom for more information. The article as published on May 14, 2020, is preserved below.

The introduction of a system-wide dark mode toggle in Android 10 has had a massive effect on the UI designs of many Android apps. A lot of Android apps have built-in dark themes now, and many of these apps also sync their dark theme with Android 10’s toggle. Google Chrome already does this for its toolbar and settings pages, but soon it’ll also darken Google Search results in sync with Android 10’s dark mode toggle.

Google first introduced dark mode support as a feature flag in Chrome browser version 74. They later introduced a dedicated “Themes” section in Chrome’s settings, and they also added a feature flag to render all web content using a dark theme. While it’s currently possible to display Google search results in a dark theme by using the #enable-force-dark feature flag, doing so may break the experience of many websites that haven’t been designed with darker background colors in mind. With the new #enable-android-dark-search feature flag that was just merged in the Chromium Gerrit, though, you’ll be able to show darkened search page results so long as Chrome’s dark mode is enabled. And since Chrome’s dark mode can be set to sync with the “system default” theme, that means the darkened search results can sync with Android 10’s system-wide dark mode toggle.

This feature is still a work-in-progress, though, as Google search results weren’t being darkened when I enabled the feature flag on a freshly built Chromium APK running on a Pixel 4 on Android 10. As 9to5Google pointed out last week when the commit first emerged, Google could have accomplished this goal through the “prefers-color-scheme” media CSS feature. However, that doesn’t seem to be the approach that Google is taking here.

In a related commit, Google details how the Chrome browser will show darkened search results when the user has Android 10’s dark mode enabled. The description states that “when the user is in night mode and visits Google search (homepage or results),” Google Chrome will “append an extra URL parameter to indicate that this user should get the darkened version of the website.” It seems that Chrome will append ?cs=1 to any Google Search URL if the user has dark mode enabled. Here’s an example of how this URL parameter darkens the Google Search results page:

The #enable-android-dark-search feature flag is currently available in the latest Chromium build but will eventually make its way over to Dev, Beta, and Stable releases. We’ll be tracking this feature as its development progresses.

Update: Google Chrome flag to darken Search results is now live

When we first published our article on May 14, 2020, the feature flag which darkened Google Search results within Chrome was not working, and we had to make use of a URL workaround to showcase what the feature would look like. Now, the flag is working on the latest Canary release, allowing Chrome to change the results UX in-line with Android 10’s dark mode settings synced across the system. To enable the feature on a recent Chrome Canary release, load up chrome://flags and set the “Show darkened search pages on Android” option to “enabled”.

The OnePlus 5 and 5T are getting their stable Android 10 updates with OxygenOS 10

It looks like the OnePlus software team is having a productive lockdown, as they just released the stable version of Android 10-based OxygenOS 10 for OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T. Both of these devices are the ‘flagship killers’ from 2017. It was back in October of last year when OnePlus promised to bring Android 10 to these devices by Q2 of 2020. The first Open Beta was available just a month ago. Within the current month, we’ve seen the second and third Open Betas. Now, just under a week later since the last beta, OnePlus is releasing a stable version of OxygenOS 10.

If you haven’t been living under a rock, then you probably already know what’s new in Android 10. It’s almost a year old version after all. OnePlus’ commitment to staying close to stock Android is nothing new, either. OxygenOS 10 integrates one of Android 10’s biggest changes, the full-screen gestures. Some would argue that the dark theme is a bigger change, but OnePlus has had it for years.

The update has just been released, so there are no download links yet for manual flashing. We could not even find the thread on OnePlus Community forums. All you can do is go to your device settings and check for updates. The update is 1.8GB in size, according to a user’s screenshot on the forum.

YouTube for Android tests showing a recommended Google Search result when searching in YouTube

Following the recent rollout of the new Bedtime Reminders feature in YouTube for Android, Google has now started testing a new feature that will show search results from the web within the app. The feature was recently spotted by Reddit user u/TheMrIggs when he searched “open beer with knife” in the YouTube app. As you can see in the screenshots below, the results listed a couple of related videos, as usual, followed by a new “Results from the web” card featuring a recommended result from Google Search for the same query.

In case you don’t find any useful results on YouTube or even in the new Search card, you also get the option to search for the same keyword on Google just by tapping on the link at the bottom of the card. As far as the utility of this new feature is concerned, we believe that Google is adding it to the YouTube app in order to help users easily find useful results from the web in case they don’t find appropriate results on YouTube.

While Google hasn’t released any information about this new feature yet, it appears to be rolling out for some users via a server-side update. We tried updating the YouTube app to the latest release and using the same keywords to trigger the feature but we weren’t able to replicate it on any of our devices. As of now, we have no information from Google regarding a broader rollout.

Krita, a FOSS digital drawing app, is now available for Android tablets and Chromebooks

When it comes to digital drawing apps on Android, the Google Play Store offers a variety of different options to choose from. Sadly though, most of the professional-grade apps are either very expensive or offer only a few basic features for free. In order to give Android tablet and Chromebook users a feature-packed free and open-source alternative, the team behind Krita has now released its first beta on the platform.

For the unaware, Krita is a free to use, open-source digital drawing software for desktop developed by KDE —an international community of free software. The desktop version of the program maintains over 200 tools that can be installed on GNU/Linux distributions and other platforms, making it a great alternative to apps like Adobe Photoshop and Coral Painter. Thanks to the recent beta release, you can now utilize Krita’s vast library of tools on both Android tablets and Chromebooks.

According to a recent blog post on the matter, the Krita beta release for Android and ChromeOS is based on version 4.2.9 of the desktop app. The app features the same interface as the desktop version, which is why it currently isn’t compatible with Android smartphones due to their smaller UIs. If you’re interested in trying out the app on your tablet or Chromebook, you can click on the Play Store link below and download the app.

Unlike the Steam and Windows Store version, Krita for Android and ChromeOS is completely free to use, but you can buy a supporter badge from within the app to support development for the project. Do note that since this is an early access release, you might encounter some bugs while using the app on your device.

Realme launches Realme TV, Realme Watch smartwatch, and Realme Buds Air Neo in India

After selling smartphones are highly compelling prices for over 1.5 years, Realme last year announced its plan to expand its product portfolio and launch new products in the tech lifestyle category. Its first product was a pair of truly wireless earbuds – the Realme Buds Air (review) – followed by the Realme Band fitness tracker. Today, Realme is introducing three new products to further its line of “AIoT” devices in India. These new products include the new smartwatch called Realme Watch, an Android TV called Realme TV, and a new pair of earphones called Realme Buds Neo.

Realme Watch

Realme is the second wrist wearable from the company. The display on the Realme Watch is larger measuring 1.4-inch diagonally and has a higher brightness of about 380 nits. This is a touch-sensitive display with a resolution of 320×320 pixels, lending it a pixel density of 323ppi. The Watch comes with 12 inbuilt watch faces and Realme will add several more options with an OTA update soon.

The Realme Watch features a Goodix PPG optical heart rate sensor with automatic monitoring round the clock. The sensor also supports SpO2 measurement for oxygen saturation level. The Realme Watch also supports 14 inbuilt fitness tracking mode for running, walking, cycling, strength training, aerobics and freeletics, and a host of sports such as basketball, badminton, soccer, and cricket especially for India.

The Realme Watch also shows notifications previews and can also be used as a trigger button controlling the camera shutter on your phone. The Watch also features a physical button on the side that acts as a back button. The button can also be held for 3 seconds to turn the Watch on or off.

For protection against water damage, Realme Watch comes with an IP68 rating which means you can wear it in rain, while showering, or while freshwater swimming.

While the standard buckle strap will be available with the Realme Watch, the company will also launch a button strap in the future.

Realme TV

The Realme TV comes with Android TV Pie interface and will be available in two screen sizes – 32″ and 43″. Both of the models are identical and only differ in terms of the display resolution – the 32″ comes with an HD+ panel while the 43″ will come with a Full HD+ panel. Both of these TVs are equipped with LED-backlit Vertical Alignment (VA) LCD panels. Realme TV comes with Realme’s Chroma Boost Engine for a saturated and vivid color profile. The TV also uses the HDR10 and Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) formats for improved HDR content.

In terms of audio, the Realme TV features 24W dual speakers with separate tweeters. Realme says that the speakers on the TV can reproduce audio in the range 148Hz-20kHz. Realme TV will also support Dolby Audio for supported apps and content. To complement the audio, Realme will also launch a 100W soundbar with a sub-woofer soon.

In terms of software, the Realme TV uses the stock Android TV launcher without any over the top modifications. It is certified for content platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video and comes pre-loaded with these apps. You can also download other apps like Hotstar, JioTV, Voot etc.

The Realme TV comes with a smart remote controller that connects to the TV over Bluetooth. It comes with hot launcher keys for YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and a yellow ring around the direction pad highlighting the company’s signature color. The remote also comes with an in-line microphone for interacting with the Google Assistant.

The Realme TV is powered by a MediaTek quad-core chipset with ARM Cortex A53 1.1GHz CPU and a Mali-470 MP3 GPU. It comes with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. For I/O, the TV comes with three HDMI ports, a TV input, AV input, 2 USB ports, a LAN port,  2.4GHz Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 5.0.

Realme Buds Air Neo

As a follow-up to the Realme Buds Aid, the company has launched a more affordable set of TWS earbuds – the Realme Buds Air Neo. These are identical to the previous generation but lack a few features as a trade-off for affordability. The Buds Air Neo carrying case lacks wireless charging.

The Buds Air new come with 13mm drivers with a bass-heavy profile optimized for Indian and Bollywood music. The earbuds are also available in two colors – Punk Green and Rock Red – besides the regular white color. Like the previous version, the Realme Buds Air Neo come with touch-sensitive triggers on the outer side of the earbuds and these controls can be customized from the Realme Link app.

Price & Availability

The Realme Watch with a black buckle strap will be available for ₹3,999 starting June 5th via Flipkart and realme.com. The “Fashion Straps” with button hooks can be bought separately for ₹499 in the future.

The 32″ Realme TV is priced at ₹12,999  while the 43″ variant will come for ₹21,999. These will be available on Flipkart and realme.com starting June 12th.

The Realme Buds Air Neo are priced at ₹2,999 and the white variant will be available on Flipkart and realme.com starting today i.e. May 25th. The other two color variants will be available for purchase later.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20+ leaked renders reveal massive 6.9″ display and S Pen slot

Samsung’s Note series of smartphones has been a staple of the Korean brand for years. The Note smartphones have always been Samsung’s biggest and best phones, and that’s why leaks of the Note series are always really exciting to see. Thanks to a new leak OnLeaks in collaboration with Pigtou, we have our best look yet at the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Plus model.

Based on these new renders, we can see that the actual design of the Galaxy Note 20+ is very familiar. It nearly matches the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ expect it has a new camera setup and power button location. The dimensions of the new Note 20+ are 165mm long x 77.2mm wide x 7.6mm thick excluding the camera bump, and 10.7mm thick including the camera bump. The front still has a centered hole-punch cutout with a small slit in the top bezel for the earpiece speaker. The Note 20+ still has a USB Type-C port at the bottom but there’s no 3.5mm headphone jack.

Samsung did make a few minor changes, though, like moving the S Pen slot and bottom-firing speaker grille to the bottom left side of the phone and removing the audio passthrough hole at the top of the phone. The curved screen edges on the Note 20+ don’t appear to be that dramatic, either.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20+ may have a 4,500 mAh battery, according to certification data from the China Quality Certification Center. This is to power the new 6.9-inch 120Hz display with the LTPO backplane for better efficiency. The display will have a resolution of 3040×1440 at a 19:9 aspect ratio with support for a 120Hz variable refresh rate. The Note 20 series is expected to feature top-tier internal hardware including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 or upcoming Samsung Exynos 992, up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM, large amounts of UFS 3.1 storage, and more.

The Galaxy Note 20+ is also rumored to keep the 108MP sensor but with a new hardware laser autofocus sensor since many people complained about the autofocus on the S20 Ultra. The Note 20+ is also rumored to remove the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra’s headlining marketing feature: 100X Space Zoom. According to Korean publication KiPost (via SamMobile), Samsung is also reportedly removing the Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor found in the Galaxy Note 10+ and Galaxy S20+/Ultra, which is a strange move since Samsung was reportedly investing in new ToF manufacturing capacity.

All around, the Galaxy Note 20+ is shaping up to be an interesting successor to the Galaxy Note 10+. When I reviewed the Note 10+, I concluded it was my favorite phone at the time. From the looks of it, the new Note 20+ will probably become my new favorite phone in just a few months. Samsung is rumored to do an online-only launch event in August for the Note 20 and Galaxy Fold 2, according to the Korean publication The Herald.
