September 2020 security update rolling out for the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy A50

Google has a tradition of rolling out Android security patches on the first Monday of each month, but that doesn’t mean other OEMs can’t beat the Mountain View giant at their own game. The latest Android Security Bulletin and Pixel Update Bulletin for September 2020 have yet to go live, but several Samsung phones have already started to get the new security update. Three more phones, the Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, and the Galaxy A50 are now receiving the same treatment from the Korean OEM across the globe.

Tagged with the version number N98xxXXS1ATH9, the new OTA for the Galaxy Note 20 series is intended for the Exynos-powered international models. Both the 4G (SM-N980F and SM-N985F) and the 5G (SM-N981B and SM-N986B) variants are now getting the update in Germany and the SEE region, which is Samsung’s code for South East Europe. The official changelog doesn’t mention anything other than the obvious bump in the Android security patch level.

Galaxy A50

The mid-ranger Samsung Galaxy A50 was well received by its target audience, and the swift update frequency now makes this device even more attractive. Two different variants of this popular phone – SM-A505F and SM-A505FN – are receiving the September 2020 Android security patches in the form of software version A505FDDU5BTH8 and A505FNXXU5BTH8, respectively. As reported by SamMobile, the new build also improves AR Emoji stability as well as compatibility with third party apps.

The bootloader version remains unchanged from the last stable build in both cases, thus owners of these phones are free to downgrade if required. The new security bulletin, as well as more regional OTAs, should be available in the near future, albeit people can use tools like Frija to bypass the waiting queue and download the new firmware packages right away.

U.S. considers sanctioning SMIC, China’s largest semiconductor manufacturer

The U.S. administration under President Donald Trump is hell-bent on closing all avenues for Chinese OEM Huawei to run a sustainable business. The administration recently tightened its restrictions against Huawei even further and announced a new license requirement for all parties who wish to conduct business with the company. While some companies, like MediaTek, have already applied for the license to sell chips to Huawei, the company’s woes are far from over. As per a recent report from Reuters, the U.S. administration is now mulling over blacklisting China’s Semiconductor Manufacturing Internal Corporation (SMIC), which is currently the only chip maker safe from U.S. restrictions that prevent other chip makers from supplying chips to Huawei.

For the unaware, the U.S. administration amended an export rule earlier this year in May to block the shipment of chips to Huawei. The amendment essentially prevented most major chipmakers, like Taiwan’s TSMC, from supplying chips to Huawei. Shanghai-based SMIC was the only chip make unaffected by the restrictions, and it supplied Huawei with the new HiSilicon Kirin 710A chipset earlier this year. If the new restrictions go into effect, however, Huawei will be left with no chipmakers to produce its HiSilicon lineup of chips. As a result, the Huawei Mate 40 series may be the last smartphone range to feature a HiSilicon Kirin chipset. Although Huawei is exploring MediaTek’s high-end Dimensity chipsets for its devices, the supply will depend on whether the U.S. administration gives MediaTek the necessary license to start shipping to Huawei.

In a statement regarding the matter, SMIC told Reuters that it was “in complete shock” over the news. However, the company is open to communication with the U.S. government agencies to resolve any misunderstandings. According to a report from The Washington Post, the U.S. Department of Defense is currently working with other agencies to determine whether the “actions” of SMIC warrant adding the company to the government’s Entity List. Pentagon spokeswoman Sue Gough was quoted saying, “Such an action would ensure that all exports to SMIC would undergo a more comprehensive review.” The U.S. government is considering sanctions against SMIC based on a statement from a defense contractor in Reston, VA. The defense contractor claims that SMIC has a variety of ties to China’s defense sector, including an ongoing relationship with CETC — a state-owned developer of military electronics. So far, SMIC has released no statement regarding the matter.

[Update: Stable] Motorola One Zoom and Moto G8 Plus get Android 10 soak test updates in Brazil

Update 1 (09/07/2020 @ 05:51 AM ET): Motorola has pushed the soak test builds as stable, for the Motorola One Zoom and Moto G8 Plus. Scroll to the bottom for more information. The article as published on July 31, 2020, is preserved below.

Different smartphone OEMs go by their own schedule when it comes to Android updates. Motorola, for example, prefers to conduct limited invitation-based public beta testing (commonly referred to as “soak testing”) before the actual release of a major Android version update through the stable channel. The final beta firmware is often mature enough to be considered as the stable build, which means the soak testing phase is a pretty good indicator of the arrival of the stable update. Now, the Motorola One Zoom (also known as the Motorola One Pro) and the Moto G8 Plus have started receiving such soak test builds of Android 10.

Motorola One Zoom

Despite the “One” tag, the Motorola One Zoom (codename “parker”) is not a part of the Android One initiative. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 675-powered phone was announced at IFA 2019 with Android Pie onboard. The Android 10 soak test for this device is currently running in Brazil, where the company has pushed several beta builds so far. The version number of the latest soak test build is QPH30.29-Q3-28-13 and it comes with the July 2020 security patches.

Moto G8 Plus

The Moto G8 Plus (codename “doha”) packs in the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 SoC along with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The phone runs a close-to-stock version of Android Pie out of the box, while the soak testing of Android 10 is underway in Brazil. Those enrolled their device to Motorola’s Feedback Network (MFN) have received multiple beta builds as of yet, with the latest one featuring July 2020 security patches.

It is worth noting that the soak test beta builds sometimes contain critical bugs. Therefore, we would recommend you to stay away from sideloading these beta builds on your daily driver. Once all the known issues are being ironed out, Motorola will push the stable update to all users, including the beta testers.

Update: Official stable rollout of Android 10 for the Motorola One Zoom and Moto G8 Plus

Motorola has begun rolling out the official Android 10 stable update for the Motorola One Zoom and Moto G8 Plus. Users for both the devices report that they have received an update in the stable branch, which is the same build as was tested in the soak test. Build numbers are QPH30.29-Q3-28-13 for the One Zoom, and QPI30.28-Q3-28-26 for the G8 Plus. The builds are likely rolling out gradually, so it should reach out to more users as the days progress.

OnePlus Nord gets OxygenOS 10.5.7 with more camera, display, and connectivity improvements

OnePlus rolled out a software update to the OnePlus Nord, its newly launched affordable mid-range smartphone, just last week. Now the company is back again with a fresh build in the form of OxygenOS 10.5.7 that further improves OnePlus Nord’s camera, display, and connectivity. This appears to be a minor software update as it doesn’t seem to bring along a long list of features or improvements.

The main highlights of this update include improvements to 4K 60fps video stabilization on the front camera and enhanced image clarity of the macro camera. OnePlus also notes optimizations to display calibration, Bluetooth connection stability, and improved voice quality on calls.

The new Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition series brings two new smart TVs to the Indian market, starting at just ₹13,499 (~$184). The lineup includes a 32-inch HD ready TV, with a resolution of 1368 x 7268p and minimal bezels on all sides, and a 43-inch FHD variant, with a resolution of 1920 x 1080p and similarly styled bezels.

The new design helps the TVs achieve a 95% screen-to-body ratio. The smart TVs run Xiaomi’s custom TV OS PatchWall (based on Android TV 9), which offers features like universal search, kids mode, curated lists, and one click play.

With the new Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition, Xiaomi is also bringing a new software feature called Mi Quick Wake to PatchWall, which will allow users to turn their TVs off and back on in under 10 seconds. As with older Mi TVs, PatchWall also gives users access to a boatload of Play Store apps, Chromecast support, Google Assistant support, and a host of content from Xiaomi’s official content partners.

To ensure that the TVs offer the best picture quality in this price range, the Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition series makes use of Xiaomi’s proprietary Vivid Picture Engine technology. The technology consists of hardware and software optimizations to ensure accurate screen calibration, deeper contrast, and enhanced color reproduction.

Pricing and Availability

The Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition will be available in two size variants that have been priced as follows:

Unofficial LineageOS 17.1 is now available for the Motorola One Vision and Motorola One Action

Earlier this year in April, Motorola released Android 10 kernel sources for the Motorola One Vision and One Action. While we expected the kernel source code release to jump-start third-party development for the devices, so far, we haven’t seen much progress. Even though both the devices have received official TWRP support since the kernel source code release, we haven’t seen many custom ROMs on our Motorola One Vision and One Action forums. That changes today, as XDA Recognized Developer Stricted has now released an unofficial build of LineageOS 17.1 for the devices.

The unofficial LineageOS 17.1 release for the Motorola One Vision and One Action is based on Android 10, and it offers a near-stock Android experience for the devices. If you’re interested in trying out the ROM on your device, you’ll need to unlock its bootloader (check out this tutorial from Motorola to learn how) and install a custom recovery like TWRP (tutorial) on the device.

Once you’ve prepped your device, you can download the latest unofficial LineageOS 17.1 builds and gapps by following the links below. You’ll then need to save the .ZIP files on your device’s internal storage and boot into the custom recovery to flash the ROM. After LineageOS 17.1 is successfully flashed, you’ll need to boot into recovery again and flash the gapps package of your choice. Reboot, and you’re good to go.

Before you proceed with the flashing process, however, do take a backup of your data. It’s also worth noting that since these are initial LineageOS 17.1 builds, they might not be stable enough to run on your daily driver. But if you don’t mind the occasional bug or odd behavior, go ahead and give it a shot. To report any bugs, you can follow the instructions given in the respective forum threads.
