Download: MIUI 12 stable update rolling out to several Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices

MIUI 12 is the newest big release for Xiaomi smartphones, perhaps even bigger than an Android version jump. Features on Xiaomi devices are dictated more by their MIUI versions than the underlying Android version, so a MIUI version upgrade is an exciting event. The first batch of devices to receive the MIUI 12 stable update included the Xiaomi Mi 9, Redmi K20/Mi 9T, and Redmi K20 Pro/Mi 9T Pro. As we reach the end of June 2020, Xiaomi’s first phase of MIUI 12 rollout is complete, as many more devices have been added since the initial rollout. This article will serve as the central repository of download links for all Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices that have received their official MIUI 12 stable updates. We’ll update it regularly with fresh builds!

MIUI 12: Features

MIUI 12 was announced in April 2020, following the footsteps of MIUI 11 that gained massive popularity thanks to Xiaomi’s hardware push as well as the feature abundance within the UX.

MIUI 12 Hands-on: 12 interesting new features added in Xiaomi’s Android OS

MIUI 12 brings along a cleaner UI, new animations, changes to navigation gestures, new live wallpapers, and AOD designs, privacy indicators for the microphone, camera, and location usage, improvements to multi-window, and Picture-in-Picture, an in-built sleep tracker, and many more changes throughout the UX!

Generic flashing instructions are available at the bottom of this article. However, we advise users to refer to the device forums for specific flashing instructions for their device, in case there are any variations or special instructions that need to be followed.

Another important point to note: Xiaomi follows only a thin distinction between “beta stable” update and “stable” updates. Beta stable updates are only intended for users enrolled within the Mi Pilot beta testing program, meaning that builds assigned for this group will not install on devices with Mi Accounts that do not have the requisite permission. Once the Mi Pilot beta testers give positive feedback, the same build then gets opened up as stable release, creating a lot of confusion — for instance, the same builds linked below might first fail to install, but then they will make an appearance through the official OTA. If you get the error message that the update is for closed beta testers only, you can sideload the update through TWRP.

Flashing Instructions for MIUI 12

Note that these are generic flashing instructions that should generally be applicable across Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices. However, there is a possibility that there is a variation that is unique to your device, so we strongly advise visiting your device forums for device-specific instructions.

Recovery ROM Installation for MIUI 12

Recovery ROMs come with a .zip file extension and can be installed either through the Local Update method from within MIUI, or through the Xiaomi stock recovery. You can also use a custom recovery like TWRP for installing these ROMs, though do note that device-specific instructions may differ in that case.

  1. Local Update method:
    1. Transfer the download .zip file to your phone, and ensure you place the file in the “downloaded_rom” folder in the internal storage of your device. If no such folder exists, create one in your internal storage base directory.
    2. Within your phone, navigate to Settings > About Phone > System Update, and then press the three-dot icon in the top-right corner, and select “Choose Update Package”.
    3. If the “Choose Update Package” option is missing, tap on the MIUI logo 10 times to activate the option.
    4. Choose the downloaded .zip file.
    5. Wait for the update to install.
  2. Recovery method:
    1. Rename the downloaded .zip file to update.zip and transfer it to the base directory of your phone’s internal storage.
    2. Reboot your phone into recovery mode by powering it off and then pressing both the Power and the Volume Up buttons together.
    3. Scroll to the “Install update.zip” option using the volume keys, and select the option using the power button.
    4. Wait for the update to install.
    5. Choose the “Reboot” option if your phone does not reboot by itself after installation is completed.

Fastboot ROM Installation for MIUI 12

Fastboot ROMs come with a .tgz file extension and require a Windows computer for the installation, as well as a phone with an unlocked bootloader. However, despite being comparatively more complicated to install than Recovery ROMs, Fastboot ROMs are sometimes the only way to boot into a working system. For instructions on unlocking the bootloader of your phone, check your device’s subforums on XDA.

  1. Download MiFlash Tool on your Windows computer. The latest version can be found in Step 1 of this link. Once downloaded, extract the tool and install it. It is also advisable to have ADB and Fastboot installed, just in case you need it.
  2. Reboot your phone into Download mode by powering it off and then pressing both the Power and Volume Down buttons together.
  3. Connect your phone to the computer using the appropriate USB cable.
  4. Download the Fastboot ROM .tgz file and extract it. Remember the extract location, as you will need to paste the address into MiFlash Tool.
  5. Run MiFlash Tool on your Windows Computer and in the address bar within the tool, paste the extract location from Step 4.
  6. Click “Refresh” within MiFlash and the app should automatically recognize your device.
  7. Click “Run” within MiFlash to flash the ROM file to the device.
  8. The progress bar within MiFlash will turn green, which indicates that the ROM was successfully installed. Your device should boot automatically to the new version.

The latest version of Xiaomi’s custom Android skin – MIUI 12 – is finally here. The company has dropped the curtain yesterday, alongside the Mi 10 Youth Edition launch event in China. Compared to MIUI 11, the stable version of which was released less than six months ago, MIUI 12 brings in a slew of improvements, visual overhauls, and many new features. We have already extracted the new wallpapers, and now we are presenting the downloading links of the first set of MIUI 12 beta firmware packages for a bunch of Xiaomi and Redmi devices.

It is worth mentioning that these closed beta builds are meant for the Chinese variants, as Xiaomi suspended the rollout of MIUI global beta since last year. As a consequence, you have to flash these recovery ROMs using TWRP to bypass the MIUI beta account whitelisting. Do not expect Google Play Services or any pre-installed Google apps in them. Language options are likely limited to English and Chinese only, too. Xiaomi did launch MIUI 12 globally, and we are waiting for builds to appear for that too. Meanwhile, you can try out the closed betas from China.

The beta MIUI 12 builds listed below are based on either Android 10 or Android 11, depending on the device. If you are looking for MIUI 12 stable releases, you can find those here.

You can download the latest beta of MIUI 12 for your device from the links below. You can also visit our linked forums in case you need further assistance. While all of these download links are directly from Xiaomi, users are advised to proceed at their own risk. We warn you once again, this is not intended for the average consumer and is recommended only for users comfortable with flashing ROMs.

OnePlus Nord 6GB + 64GB variant goes on sale in India for ₹24,999 on September 21

The OnePlus Nord was officially unveiled back in July as an affordable mid-range smartphone, marking a return of OnePlus to the mid-range space, which it had abandoned a long time ago. The Nord offers a lot of premium features at a fraction of the cost of its premium siblings, including a 90Hz AMOLED display, Snapdragon 765G SoC, a quad-camera setup, 5G connectivity, and clutter-free software experience.

OnePlus Nord XDA Forums

In most markets, the OnePlus Nord is available in two variants: a base model with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage and a top variant packing 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. But for India, OnePlus had promised a variant with even lower RAM, storage, and consequently, pricing. This variant was already confirmed at the time of launch, but it’s only now that the company has confirmed the exact sale date. The special variant will offer 6GB RAM and 64GB of storage and will go on its first sale on September 21st at ₹24,999 (~$340). It will be available only in the Gray Onyx color. For the uninitiated, this India-specific variant is ₹3,000 cheaper compared to the base model that’s currently available in India, which retails at ₹27,999 (~$380).

It’s not just the excellent hardware that makes the OnePlus Nord so great. OnePlus devices are known for receiving excellent software support, and the OnePlus Nord is no different. Since its launch, OnePlus has rolled out many software updates to the device, which have significantly improved the camera performance and fixed many bugs. On top of that, the Nord is also a great choice for those who like to tinker with their device and try out new custom ROMs and mods. In fact, unofficial builds of TWRP, LineageOS 17.1, and Pixel Experience are already out for the device. And now with the release of the kernel source code, we expect to see many more custom ROMs and kernels making their way to the OnePlus Nord.

The Android GPU Inspector is now in open beta with support for the Pixel 4 on Android 11

At the Google for Games Developer Summit earlier this year, Google first showcased a new Android Studio tool called Android GPU Inspector. The tool is designed to help graphics engineers optimize their games’ frame rates and power use for supported GPUs by giving them access to the render stages and GPU counters. Back then, the tool was only available in a limited developer preview to a few game studios, who had started testing it on the Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL, Galaxy Note 10, and Galaxy S10. Now, the Android GPU Inspector is available in open beta for all game developers.

In a recent post on the Android Developers Blog, Google announced the Android GPU Inspector Open Beta for its Pixel 4 devices running Android 11. Game developers interested in trying out the tool to optimize their games can download Android GPU Inspector here, and then follow the setup instructions provided in this post. Since Android GPU Inspector relies on updated firmware and video drivers to get the information it needs, it’s currently only available for the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL running Android 11. However, Google is working with device manufacturers and SoC vendors to enable support for more devices.

Quantifying the performance benefits achieved as a result of optimizing games with the Android GPU Inspector, Google noted:

“Working with Blizzard Entertainment Inc. and NetEase, Inc., AGI helped pinpoint 45% vertex bandwidth savings for the upcoming Diablo Immortal, a dark gothic action RPG game…Working with King, AGI helped improve GPU frame time from 11-16ms to a stable 8ms for the upcoming Crash Bandicoot: On the Run!, allowing the game to reduce battery drain and run faster for a smoother experience…In collaboration with Jam City, AGI helped reduce GPU frametime by 45% on World War Doh: Real Time PvP.”

For the unaware, the Android GPU Inspector is designed by Google in collaboration with Qualcomm. The tool supports most GPUs found in Android devices today, including the Adreno GPUs in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SoCs. Thanks to the partnership, Android GPU Inspector allows developers to share feedback directly with Qualcomm and help the company optimize Adreno GPU software drivers. Qualcomm will also give some developers access to a beta driver so that they can quickly test their optimizations, after which the final driver will be released for select devices through the Google Play Store. Considering that ARM’s next Mali GPUs will also support updateable drivers via the Google Play Store, the tool could also benefit devices with MediaTek, HiSilicon Kirin, and Exynos chipsets.

Samsung Android 11 Tracker: Here are all the official One UI 3.0 beta and stable builds to download and install

Android 11 just launched, and many of us are looking forward to getting it on our phones. Eyes are on all popular OEMs, like Samsung, to see when they will begin rolling out updates. Matter of fact, the Korean OEM kicked off the Android 11-based One UI 3.0 developer beta program for the Galaxy S20 series over a month ago. While the limited beta rollout is just getting started, we’ve known that the company has been testing internal builds of the next iteration of One UI based on Android 11 for a few days now.

This is One UI 3.0 (Beta) on the Galaxy S20 – Samsung’s Android 11 update!

Samsung has yet to announce an official list of eligible Galaxy devices to get the Android 11 update, but it is expected that the current generation flagship series will receive their stable OTAs before the end of the year. A public beta phase before the actual stable rollout for some of these devices should be right around the corner. This article will serve as the central repository of download links for all Samsung devices that have received their official Android 11 updates in the form of One UI 3.0, including both the public beta and the stable builds.

When it comes to regional preference, Samsung has a history of testing new beta updates with customers in its home country of South Korea first. The public beta program (usually conducted through the Samsung Members app) eventually makes its way to other regions, so users are advised to check the schedule for their region by opening the app and heading to the ‘Notices’ section.

List of Samsung devices that have received stable Android 11

This article covers Samsung devices that have received a stable Android 11 update—be it (public) beta or stable—in any region. It is worth mentioning that you can’t cross-flash a firmware that is intended for a Snapdragon Samsung Galaxy phone on its Exynos variant (or vice-versa).

Here are the devices that currently have an Android 11 build based on the stable Android branch available. Note that the devices are sorted alphabetically for their retail name.

  1. Samsung Galaxy S20 (x1s/x1q) — Added on 09/15/2020
  2. Samsung Galaxy S20+ (y2s/y2q) — Added on 09/15/2020
  3. Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra (z3s/z3q) — Added on 09/15/2020

Generic flashing instructions are available at the bottom of this article. However, we advise users to refer to the device forums for specific flashing instructions for their device, in case there are any variations or special instructions that need to be followed.

One UI 3.0 based on stable Android 11: Download Links

You can find download links of One UI 3.0 public beta and stable releases below. These builds are first sorted with device names, and then according to their regions/SoC variants and release. Downgrade packages are also included, wherever present. Notably, the concept of a downgrade ROM isn’t applicable here. First, check the installed bootloader version on your model and then flash the appropriate stable Android 10-based firmware through Odin if you need to revert back.

Flashing Instructions for One UI 3.0

Note that these are generic flashing instructions that should generally be applicable to any Samsung Galaxy device out there. However, there is a possibility that there is a variation that is unique to your device (such as a carrier model), so we strongly advise visiting your device forums for device-specific instructions.

Recovery ROM Installation for One UI 3.0

Recovery ROMs come with a .zip file extension and can be installed through the stock Samsung recovery.

  1. Rename the downloaded .zip file to update.zip and transfer it to the base directory of your phone’s internal storage.
  2. Reboot your phone into recovery mode by powering it off and then pressing the Power, Bixby, and the Volume Up buttons together.
  3. Scroll to the “Update via SDcard” option using the volume keys, and select the option using the power button.
  4. Again using volume keys navigate to the file “update.zip” and press the Power button to select it.
  5. Wait for the update to install.
  6. The device should automatically not reboot by itself after installation is completed.

Odin ROM Installation for One UI 3.0

Odin ROMs are available once the build hits the stable milestone. Users require a Windows computer for the installation, although unofficial ports of the flasher for other platforms are available as well. However, despite being comparatively more complicated to install than Recovery ROMs, Odin ROMs are sometimes the only way to boot into a working system. For instructions on unlocking the bootloader of your phone, check your device’s subforums on XDA.

  1. Download Odin on your Windows computer. It is also advisable to have official Samsung Android USB drivers installed.
  2. Reboot your phone into Download mode by powering it off and then pressing the Power, Bixby, and the Volume Down buttons together. The key-combo may vary across devices.
  3. Connect your phone to the computer using the appropriate USB cable.
  4. Download the Odin ROM package using SamFirm or Frija and extract it. Remember the extract location, as you will need to browse the address into Odin flasher.
  5. Run Odin on your Windows PC. and in the address bar within the tool, paste .
  6. Odin should detect your device and a blue box will show up with the COM port number.
  7. Select individual ROM components from the exact location from Step 4. Then click “Run” within Odin to flash the ROM file to the device.
  8. The progress bar within Odin will turn green, which indicates that the ROM was successfully installed. Your device should boot automatically to the new version.

The Fitbit Sense’s ECG app launches next month in the U.S., Europe, and India

Wearables manufacturer Fitbit recently unveiled the Fitbit Sense, one of the most advanced smartwatches from the company. The new smartwatch packs in a variety of health and fitness tracking sensors, including an electrocardiogram (ECG) monitor, an electrodermal activity (EDA) sensor for managing stress, an on-wrist skin temperature sensor, and more. However, at the time of launch, the ECG feature on the smartwatch hadn’t received regulatory approval, and therefore the ECG app had not been released for users. Fitbit has now finally received regulatory approval for the ECG feature, and the company will soon start rolling out the ECG app to users.

As per a press release shared by the company, Fitbit has successfully received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Conformité Européenne (CE) marking in the European Union for its ECG app. The ECG app will allow users to make use of the ECG monitor on the Fitbit Sense to assess their heart rhythm for arterial fibrillation (AFib). The Fitbit ECG app will be released for all Fitbit Sense users next month in the following countries: the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Poland, Belgium, Portugal, Romania, Ireland, Italy, Spain, France, Hong Kong, and India.

To receive proper certification for the app, Fitbit conducted a multi-site trial in regions across the U.S. The study evaluated the app’s ability to differentiate AFib from the normal sinus rhythm and to generate an ECG trace that is qualitatively similar to a Lead I ECG. The press release notes that Fitbit’s study “showed that the algorithm exceeded target performance, demonstrating the ability to detect 98.7% of AFit cases (sensitivity) and was 100% accurate in identifying study participants with normal sinus rhythm (specificity).”

Once the app rolls out next month, users will be able to hold their fingers on the stainless steel ring on the watch while being still for 30 seconds to get a reading. The app will also let users download and share the readings with doctors for a proper medical examination. It’s worth noting that Fitbit isn’t the only wearables manufacturer to have received regulatory approval for the ECG feature on its smartwatch. Samusung has also received similar certification for its Galaxy Watch Active 2 in South Korea and for the Galaxy Watch 3 in the U.S.

Redmi 9i launched in India, is a Redmi 9A with 4GB RAM and 64GB/128GB storage

When we say that Xiaomi is flooding the Indian market with Redmi 9 variant, we actually do mean that the company is releasing a whole bunch of smartphones in the Redmi 9 branding. Some of these phones are very similar to some other phones within the branding, while some have a lot more differences. The barrage started with the Redmi 9 Prime (rebranded global Redmi 9), followed by the Redmi 9 (rebranded Redmi 9C), and then the Redmi 9A (which is Redmi 9A globally as well). Today, Xiaomi added yet another smartphone in the mix. Meet the Redmi 9i, which is pretty much the already-released Redmi 9A but with 4GB of RAM and more storage options.

The Redmi 9A is a humble smartphone aimed at capturing some of the early segments of the market, and the Redmi 9i is a marginal upgrade over this. As such, most specifications and design elements remain the same. The biggest change, apart from the branding and online sales channel, is the fact that you now get a decent 4GB of RAM as well as options for 64GB and 128GB of storage. There is also a dedicated microSD card slot, so you can expand it further by another 512GB of storage. We can also confirm that the phones are the same as both come with the codename “dandelion“.
