Download: MIUI 12 stable update rolling out to several Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices

MIUI 12 is the newest big release for Xiaomi smartphones, perhaps even bigger than an Android version jump. Features on Xiaomi devices are dictated more by their MIUI versions than the underlying Android version, so a MIUI version upgrade is an exciting event. The first batch of devices to receive the MIUI 12 stable update included the Xiaomi Mi 9, Redmi K20/Mi 9T, and Redmi K20 Pro/Mi 9T Pro. As we reach the end of June 2020, Xiaomi’s first phase of MIUI 12 rollout is complete, as many more devices have been added since the initial rollout. This article will serve as the central repository of download links for all Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices that have received their official MIUI 12 stable updates. We’ll update it regularly with fresh builds!

MIUI 12: Features

MIUI 12 was announced in April 2020, following the footsteps of MIUI 11 that gained massive popularity thanks to Xiaomi’s hardware push as well as the feature abundance within the UX.

MIUI 12 Hands-on: 12 interesting new features added in Xiaomi’s Android OS

MIUI 12 brings along a cleaner UI, new animations, changes to navigation gestures, new live wallpapers, and AOD designs, privacy indicators for the microphone, camera, and location usage, improvements to multi-window, and Picture-in-Picture, an in-built sleep tracker, and many more changes throughout the UX!

Generic flashing instructions are available at the bottom of this article. However, we advise users to refer to the device forums for specific flashing instructions for their device, in case there are any variations or special instructions that need to be followed.

Another important point to note: Xiaomi follows only a thin distinction between “beta stable” update and “stable” updates. Beta stable updates are only intended for users enrolled within the Mi Pilot beta testing program, meaning that builds assigned for this group will not install on devices with Mi Accounts that do not have the requisite permission. Once the Mi Pilot beta testers give positive feedback, the same build then gets opened up as a stable release, creating a lot of confusion — for instance, the same builds linked below might first fail to install, but then they will make an appearance through the official OTA. If you get the error message that the update is for closed beta testers only, you can sideload the update through TWRP.

Flashing Instructions for MIUI 12

Note that these are generic flashing instructions that should generally be applicable across Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices. However, there is a possibility that there is a variation that is unique to your device, so we strongly advise visiting your device forums for device-specific instructions.

Recovery ROM Installation for MIUI 12

Recovery ROMs come with a .zip file extension and can be installed either through the Local Update method from within MIUI, or through the Xiaomi stock recovery. You can also use a custom recovery like TWRP for installing these ROMs, though do note that device-specific instructions may differ in that case.

  1. Local Update method:
    1. Transfer the download .zip file to your phone, and ensure you place the file in the “downloaded_rom” folder in the internal storage of your device. If no such folder exists, create one in your internal storage base directory.
    2. Within your phone, navigate to Settings > About Phone > System Update, and then press the three-dot icon in the top-right corner, and select “Choose Update Package”.
    3. If the “Choose Update Package” option is missing, tap on the MIUI logo 10 times to activate the option.
    4. Choose the downloaded .zip file.
    5. Wait for the update to install.
  2. Recovery method:
    1. Rename the downloaded .zip file to update.zip and transfer it to the base directory of your phone’s internal storage.
    2. Reboot your phone into recovery mode by powering it off and then pressing both the Power and the Volume Up buttons together.
    3. Scroll to the “Install update.zip” option using the volume keys, and select the option using the power button.
    4. Wait for the update to install.
    5. Choose the “Reboot” option if your phone does not reboot by itself after installation is completed.

Fastboot ROM Installation for MIUI 12

Fastboot ROMs come with a .tgz file extension and require a Windows computer for the installation, as well as a phone with an unlocked bootloader. However, despite being comparatively more complicated to install than Recovery ROMs, Fastboot ROMs are sometimes the only way to boot into a working system. For instructions on unlocking the bootloader of your phone, check your device’s subforums on XDA.

  1. Download MiFlash Tool on your Windows computer. The latest version can be found in Step 1 of this link. Once downloaded, extract the tool and install it. It is also advisable to have ADB and Fastboot installed, just in case you need it.
  2. Reboot your phone into Download mode by powering it off and then pressing both the Power and Volume Down buttons together.
  3. Connect your phone to the computer using the appropriate USB cable.
  4. Download the Fastboot ROM .tgz file and extract it. Remember the extract location, as you will need to paste the address into MiFlash Tool.
  5. Run MiFlash Tool on your Windows Computer and in the address bar within the tool, paste the extract location from Step 4.
  6. Click “Refresh” within MiFlash and the app should automatically recognize your device.
  7. Click “Run” within MiFlash to flash the ROM file to the device.
  8. The progress bar within MiFlash will turn green, which indicates that the ROM was successfully installed. Your device should boot automatically to the new version.

Thanks to XDA Recognized Developer yshalsager for providing the download links!

Here’s our best look at Samsung’s Galaxy M12, a budget smartphone with a 7000mAh battery

Samsung launched the Galaxy M series in India last year to compete with Chinese OEMs like Xiaomi and Realme in the budget and lower mid-range segments. The Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 were the first phones in the series, and they were followed by the Galaxy M30, Galaxy M30s, and Galaxy M40 over the course of the year. Since all of these devices target different price brackets, Samsung has been busy launching refreshed models for each device this year. Up until now, the company has launched the Galaxy M11, Galaxy M21, Galaxy M31 to succeed the Galaxy M10, Galaxy M20, and Galaxy M30s, respectively. It seems like the company is ready for another generational refresh, as renders of the upcoming Galaxy M12 have now surfaced online.

Noted leaker OnLeaks has shared the following renders of the Galaxy M12, which give us a good look at its design and highlight some of its features. As you can see in the images attached below, the upcoming Galaxy M12 is a far cry from its predecessor. It offers a more modern design with a square camera module and a two-tone finish on the back panel. Over on the front, however, it features a similar Infinity-V display with an angular waterdrop-style notch for the selfie camera.

Unlike the Galaxy M11, which featured a rear-mounted capacitive fingerprint scanner, the Galaxy M12 features a side-mounted scanner integrated into the power button. The renders further reveal that the device will include a 3.5mm headphone jack and a USB Type-C port. Although the renders reveal no hardware specifications, OnLeaks claims that the device will pack a 6.5-inch flat display and measure 163.9 x 75.9 x 8.9mm (10mm with the camera bump).

It’s worth noting that another Galaxy M21 leak was recently shared by 91mobiles, which showcased live images of the device’s back panel. However, the previously leaked images don’t match these new renders, as they don’t include the same two-tone finish. And the display specifications shared by the publication don’t line up with the information shared by OnLeaks either. According to 91mobiles, the Galaxy M21 will feature a 6.7-inch hole-punch display and a massive 7,000mAh battery.

The report further claims that the Galaxy M12 is currently in development at Samsung’s facility in India, and it will go by the model number SM-M127F. One of the images showcases the model number etched onto the back panel along with the model number SM-F127G. This suggests that the device could be launched as the Galaxy F12 in some regions. As of now, Samsung hasn’t released any official information about the device.

This is the OPPO X 2021, a concept smartphone with a rollable display

Towards the end of last month, we learned that LG was working on a unique smartphone with a rollable display as part of its Explorer Project. The device, codenamed Project B, was teased during the LG Wing launch, and it’s expected to hit the market in March next year. While Project B is still in the works, OPPO has beaten LG to the punch with the new OPPO X 2021 concept smartphone, showcased at the recent INNO Day 2020 event, alongside the OPPO AR Glass 2021 & OPPO CybeReal.

OPPO X 2021 Concept Smartphone

The OPPO X 2021 concept smartphone features a continuously variable rollable OLED display. The device uses OPPO’s proprietary Roll Motor powertrain to expand the display from 6.7-inches to a maximum of 7.4-inches, converting it from a regular smartphone to a bigger phablet of sorts.

The powertrain consists of two motors that generate a constant force to unfold the device uniformly, ensuring that the display isn’t damaged during the process. And it even gives you the freedom to unroll the display as much as you want, unlike foldable smartphones which usually have just two states (folded and unfolded) to switch between.

OPPO X 2021rollable concept handset-Roll Motor powertrain

Despite this rolling mechanism, the display on the device has no kinks or visible folds. To ensure this, OPPO’s engineers have designed a bearing with a slider on the display side with a 6.8 mm arc. This arc allows the display to roll back without any visible folds.

OPPO X 2021 rollable concept handset-Bearing

Since the rollable display on the OPPO X 2021 isn’t as rigid as conventional displays, OPPO has also designed an innovative 2-in-1 Plate display support technology that supports the display on either side from the inside.

OPPO X 2021 rollable concept handset-2-in-1 Plate

As you can see in the attached image, this plate has a comb-like structure that effectively supports the display, no matter its shape. When the device is rolled shut, the plates form a single surface to support the display. And when it’s rolled out, one of the plates slides out to support the display without leaving any gaps. This mechanism ensures that the display remains smooth even when it’s rolled out.

OPPP X 2021 rollable concept smartphone

To protect the sliding mechanism from the back, OPPO has adopted a dynamic frame, consisting of an outer fixed frame and a sliding frame within. As the display rolls out, the sliding frame and the rear battery cover move off the back panel to better protect the internals.

Since rollable displays are quite delicate, the OPPO X 2021 also uses a proprietary Warp Track high-strength screen laminate that adds some strength to the display. The laminate is made with high-strength steel, and it’s only 0.1mm thick at its thinnest. As the following image illustrates, the Warp Track laminate forms a caterpillar track behind the display, which adds strength without increasing resistance.

OPPO X 2021 rollable concept handset-Warp Track

The aforementioned technologies on the OPPO X 2021 just scratch the surface of what went into developing the concept smartphone. OPPO claims that it applied for 122 patents during its development, 12 of which are related to the rolling mechanism alone.

You can watch OPPO’s presentation on the smartphone over here:

OPPO AR Glass 2021 & OPPO CybeReal

Along with the OPPO X 2021, the company showcased two more innovative products during its INNO Day event — OPPO AR Glass 2021 and OPPO CybeReal. The second-gen AR smart glasses are 75% lighter than last year’s model and feature a new “split-design”. The OPPO AR Glass 2021 uses Birdbath optical technology for 98% increased brightness uniformity and provides the same viewing experience as watching a 90-inch screen at 3 meters. The glasses feature binocular fish-eye cameras that capture the environment around you and provide local mapping and 3D spatial localization with low latency.

OPPO AR Glass 2021

These cameras, coupled with a ToF sensor, also track hand movements for easier operation. The hand-tracking feature follows 21 unique markers on each hand, ensuring that the AR glasses capture even the most subtle movements. On top of that, the glasses come with OPPO’s voice assistant Breeno built-in for voice commands.

CybeReal

OPPO CybeReal, on the other hand, is an AR app powered by real-time spatial calculation technology. Microsoft starts selling the Surface Go 2 and Surface Book 3 in India

Microsoft has begun selling the Surface Go 2 and Surface Book 3 in India. Announced earlier this year, the Surface Go 2 is a refresh for the company’s smallest Surface tablet, while the Surface Book 3 is Microsoft’s most powerful convertible notebook. Notably, Microsoft had also announced the Surface Headphones 2 and the Surface Earbuds during the official unveiling in May. However, it seems that these accessories will not be available in India as of yet. Pricing for the new Surface Go 2 starts at ₹42,999 and ₹1,56,299 for the Surface Book 3. Microsoft also mentions in its press note that while the Surface Go 2 will be available to all consumers, the Surface Book 3 is only being offered to commercial customers in India. This sounds odd as the Surface Book series was never solely marketed at commercial users.

Surface Go 2

The Surface Go 2 features a similar design as its predecessor, the Surface Go, but with slimmer bezels. It is Microsoft’s smallest Surface offering with a display measuring 10.5-inch with a full-HD (1920×1280) resolution and a 3:2 aspect ratio. The notebook can be configured with an  Intel Pentium Gold 4425Y processor or the 8th-gen Intel Core m3 processor with either 4GB RAM and 64GB of eMMC storage or 8GB RAM with a 128GB SSD. There is a microSD card slot for storage expansion of up to 1TB. It is claimed to offer up to 10 hours of battery life and up to 64% improvement in performance on the top variant. The rest of the features include a USB Type-C port, Surface connector, a headphone jack, dual studio microphones, and a 5-megapixel webcam. The Surface Go 2 also supports its own Surface Type Cover, although there is no word on the official pricing in India. However, we can spot a listing on Amazon India for ₹9,999 for the Surface Type Cover for the Surface Go 2.

Pricing Details

Processor RAM Storage Price
Intel Pentium Gold 4425Y 4GB 64GB ₹42,999
Intel Core m3 4GB 64GB ₹47,599
Intel Pentium Gold 4425Y 8GB 128GB ₹42,999
Intel Core m3 8GB 128GB ₹63,499

As per Microsoft India’s website, the new Surface Go 2 will be available through authorized retailers and online partners including Flipkart, Amazon India, and Paytm Mall.

Surface Book 3

The Surface Book 3 also offers a detachable 2-in-1 form factor and is available in two size variants- 13.5-inch and 15-inch. Made for creative professionals and developers, the notebook is powered by the 10th-gen Intel Core mobile processors along with the option of discrete NVIDIA GeForce GTX or Quadro RTX graphics. The Surface Book 3 is claimed to offer 50-percent improved performance over its predecessor, the Surface Book 2. Both the 13.5-inch and 15-inch variants feature two USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-A ports, a USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C port, two Surface Connect ports, an SDXC card slot, a 5-megapixel front camera, an 8-megapixel rear camera, and far-field stereo microphones. The 15-inch model is said to offer up to 17.5 hours of battery life while the 13.5-inch model is claimed to offer 15.5 hours of battery life.

Today only, save on Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements at Woot!

Adobe products can be really expensive. Whether you decide to subscribe to their Creative Cloud service or buy the applications outright, it can really take a chunk out of your wallet. There are definitely ways to save on the applications, but reseller sites can be a dice roll, and sometimes you end up with a bad code and no way to get a refund. But, today only at Woot!, you can save money stress-free on Adobe Photoshop Elements and Adobe Premiere Elements.

With this sale, you have three choices–Adobe Photoshop Elements 2020 by itself, Adobe Premiere Elements 2020 by itself, or a bundle of both of them together. Individual applications will cost $50 apiece, while the bundle is $75. That’s half off their MSRPs! Also, if you have Amazon Prime (which you still might if you signed up for the free 30 days for Prime Day), you’ll get free shipping for this item.

That’s the catch for this Woot! deal, though–these are discs, not just product codes. So, your computer needs a disc drive in order to run the installer. I know I run with a smaller PC build than most, so I decided against a DVD-ROM drive in order to save space. If you have a disc drive built-in or have an external DVD-ROM reader (which can be very helpful), then you’re good to go! In fact, you can buy the application of your choice and an external reader just for the disc and still save!

But, as is usually the case with Woot!, this deal only lasts until the end of the day, or until they sell out. Make sure to grab this quickly if you’re interested!

Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements 2020
Today only, save 50% on Adobe products! You can get Photoshop Elements 2020, Premiere Elements 2020, or both. Grab what you want before it's gone!

If you’re interested in an external DVD-ROM drive, there is one on Amazon that’s just a little over $20 with good reviews, too:

      Amicool External DVD Drive
Did you get rid of your DVD drive in your PC setup? Most people have, but sometimes you need a drive for applications and older installations. This DVD-ROM reader is reliable and cheap, so you can make sure to have a disc reader when you need it.

Here are the best Thunderbolt 3 laptops: Dell XPS 15, Apple MacBook Air and More

Data transfer speeds have grown exponentially in the past few years, be it mobile networks or your local storage media. Similarly, the good old USB has also become quite reliable when it comes to transferring large amounts of data over a wide bandwidth. Intel had announced Thunderbolt 4 earlier this year but it might take a while before we can see devices adopting the new connectivity protocol. So today, we are checking out some of the best Thunderbolt 3 equipped laptops.

Thunderbolt 3 makes use of the USB Type-C connector to offer up to 40Gbps data transfer speeds. This makes it twice as fast when compared to the latest USB 3.2 standard. Hence, Thunderbolt 3 is an excellent option for photographers, video editors, and other creative professionals, who need to frequently transfer large files. Additionally, Thunderbolt 3 can be used to connect DisplayPort-compatible devices including external 4K monitors.  The protocol can also be used to connect PCI Express (PCIe) peripherals including external graphics cards enabling you to play games or accomplish graphics-intensive tasks on even notebooks. Since it uses a standard USB port, one can also make use of various peripherals, hard drives, as well as power delivery. In case you missed it, here is also a list of the best laptops that you can buy in 2020.

    Apple MacBook Pro 16

    apple macbook pro 16

Apple has been one of the early adopters of the Thunderbolt standard. The MacBook Pro 16 offers a total of four Thunderbolt 3 ports. Apart from the 40Gbps bandwidth for Thunderbolt devices, each port brings support for charging, DisplayPort, and USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10 Gbps). Now, this is also the biggest and most powerful MacBook in years and an easy recommendation for power users, especially if you are a creative professional. The notebook can be configured with an 8-core Intel Core i9 processor, up to 16GB of 2666MHz DDR4 RAM which is further expandable, and up to 8TB of SSD storage. You also get a gorgeous 3072 x 1920 resolution Retina display and AMD Radeon Pro graphics. Do note that this might be one of the last MacBooks to support external graphics via the Thunderbolt ports as the next refresh might include the M1 chip that was introduced with the new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro 13, and Mac mini.

      Apple MacBook Pro 16
The MacBook Pro 16 is the most powerful notebook from Apple and offers a total of four Thunderbolt 3 ports.

    Dell XPS 15

    dell xps 15 laptop

The XPS 15 is an excellent Windows machine for someone who wants a premium, top of the line design as well as performance. This one comes with two Thunderbolt 3 ports with power delivery and DisplayPort support. There is a third USB Type-C port as well with the same power delivery and DisplayPort options. While the machine comes with 4GB discrete graphics, you can make use of the Thunderbolt port to plug in an external graphics card as well. Other than that you get this notebook with up to a 10th-gen Intel Core i9 processor with 32GB of RAM and 1TB NVMe SSD.

      Dell XPS 15
The XPS 15 is the best 15-inch notebook for someone who is looking for a premium design as well as a promising performance package. Apart from a standard USB Type-C port, the notebook comes with two Thunderbolt 3 ports.

    Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon

    lenovo thinkpad x1 carbon

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon is regarded as one of the best business notebooks. The two Thunderbolt 3 ports on this machine ensure that users can easily attach external monitors or projectors for quick presentations. The ports also allow you to power other devices as well as the notebook itself. The X1 Carbon comes with the latest 10th-Gen Intel vPro CPUs, up to 16GB of RAM, and 2TB SSD. The notebook is also offered with a variety of display options including 4K IPS with Dolby Vision HDR400. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon is a wise choice if you are looking for a feature-packed, highly durable laptop along with a wide selection of ports.

    Dell XPS 13

    dell xps 13 9300

The XPS 13 is one of the best Windows notebooks out there. Since it is a fairly small notebook, having Thunderbolt 3 makes a lot of sense. You can hook up two 4K monitors using the two Thunderbolt 3 ports on this machine. Both of the ports also support power delivery. The current generation of the XPS 13 offers up to a 10th-gen Intel Core i7-1065G7 processor, 16GB of memory, and 512GB SSD. The notebook also offers an excellent-looking display with a 16:10 ratio available in 1080p or 2400p resolutions.

      Dell XPS 13
The Dell XPS 13 is a highly recommended premium notebook that offers a solid balance of style and performance. It offers a total of two Thunderbolt 3 ports, one on each side.

    Apple MacBook Air

    apple macbook air m1

Similar to the MacBook Pro 16, the latest-gen MacBook Air also features Thunderbolt 3 ports. However, you only get two of them, since the notebook is relatively more affordable.  The Thunderbol ports support external 4K displays, but no longer support external graphics cards due to the new M1 chip. The MacBook Air is also the thinnest and lightest apart from being the most affordable MacBook that you can buy today. You get a healthy set of internals including the new Apple Silicon M1 chip with up to 512GB of SSD storage and 8GB of RAM that can be further upgraded.

      Apple MacBook Air
The MacBook Air might be the most affordable laptop offering from Apple, but it continues to offer a pair of Thunderbolt 3 ports.

    Acer Swift 3

    acer swift 3 2020

This is the most affordable option if you are looking for a Thunderbolt 3 port equipped laptop. The Swift 3 is a slim ultrabook packing some really good specifications at its price. There is only one USB Type-C port that supports Thunderbolt 3, but at a starting price of just $678, you can’t really complain. It is also a very lightweight machine at just 1.2kg with a robust finish. You can get the notebook with either a 10th-gen Intel Core i5 or Core i7 CPU with 8GB of memory and a 512GB SSD.

      Acer Swift 3
The Acer Swift 3 is a lightweight notebook and also one of the most affordable ones out there if you are looking for a Thunderbolt port. Sadly, you only get one such port.

    HP Spectre x360 13

    hp spectre x360 13

The Spectre x360 makes for a great option if you are looking for a 2-in-1 laptop with Thunderbolt 3. According to the company, the notebook offers two USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C ports both of which offer Thunderbolt 3 functionality. This means that each port offers a 40Gbps signaling rate, Power Delivery 3.0, DisplayPort 1.4, and of course letting you charge the laptop itself. The notebook offers a unique design and the option of a vivid 13.3-inch 4K OLED touch display. This is a premium notebook so expect solid hardware on the inside including an option for the 10th-gen Intel Core i5 or Core i7 CPU, 16GB of DDR4 memory, 512GB of NVMe SSD, and speakers tuned by Bang & Olufsen.

      HP Spectre x360 13
One of the most premium 2-in-1 laptops, the HP Spectre x360 is for the ones who don't want to compromise on style and performance. It comes with a great 4K touchscreen display option along with two Thunderbolt 3 ports.

Back at CES 2020, Intel had announced that Thunderbolt 4 is in the works and we can expect manufacturers to start shipping products with the new port by next year. Thunderbolt 4 brings some new features including an increase in the minimum video and data requirements provided by host devices, access to the same speeds at Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps), power delivery (100W), various protocols (DisplayPort, PCIe, USB4) Intel VT-d based DMA protection to avoid unauthorized access while connected, support for connectivity accessories with up to four fully functional and highly flexible downstream and of course, backward compatibility with Thunderbolt 3. So if you care for any of the added benefits, hold on to your money till 2021.
