I have been trying to figure out why my Nexus 6 can roam Verizon towers (via Sprint roaming agreement) on Project Fi, but my wife's Nexus 5X cannot. Unfortunately, the only tower near our home is a Verizon tower so it's pretty noticeable once you step outside the house.
After some digging and help from some others, we've figured out that this is because the Nexus 6 is configured for "Automatic" under Settings -> More -> Cellular Networks -> System Select, and the 5X is configured for "Home". Unfortunately the Project Fi app hides these settings, so the only way to access them is to disable the Project Fi app, and use adb to apply settings put global hide_carrier_network_settings 0, at this point you can access the settings, and make a call using the Verizon tower. As soon as you re-enable the Project Fi app, the setting is changed back to "Home" and the settings are locked up again.
So what I'm looking for is either a way to override Project Fi changing this setting, a way to launch this menu even while Project Fi is hiding it, or some other way to force the 5X to stay in Automatic. Ideally would be able to do this without root, but I'm currently rooted in an attempt to find some way to do this...
Any ideas?
